Twisting ribbons and cross-side columns create the structural support and leave the entire floor space column-less and flexible

Skin
The twisting ribbons reduces the use of glass in the facade at 40%, and use both as constructive material and as a shading and filtering element from sun and dust.
Shading systems:
Light skin with a Chinese traditional ice cracks texture, that allow to adjust the amount of light according to the light conditions, because of its hollow characteristics. Ice cracks, or opening film, is the ancient Longquan celadon in a species, its pattern piece broken ice lobes layered, three-dimen-sional and call it. In china, its in use in furniture as well, both to achieve the specific needs such as partial transparency, but also to enriche the decorative effect of the furniture

Sustainability
Natural Ventilation:The ribbons forms air-tunnels that collect the wind from the ground level, and because of the pressure diffrences between the altitudes, the air move up fast around the tower and help it breath: fresh air enter to the floors through the double-skin facade, and exhausted air goes out and up to the atmosphere.
Improved isolationWhile natural ventilation is not effective, the double-skin glass facade helps to keep the temprature inside the building stable.
Wind Resistence:Aerodynamic shape helps to decrease wind loads and prevent turbulence on ground level floor
Natural ventilation can supplement air conditioning for up to 40% of the year, reducing energy consumption up to 50% and carbon dioxide emissions.
The Gherkin - inner shaftsmore than 30% of gross floor area
Outside shaftsless than 10% of gross floor area
Plan
The typical floor plan houses an enclosed core and flexible functions around it. The core radius gets smaller as the building rise and the need of elevators and services is changing according to the function.
Outside wind-tunnels takes less than 10% of groos floor area, compare to 30% in Fosters Gherkin inner light-wells.

- Compared to glass, its 1% the weight, transmits more light and costs 24% to 70% less to install
- ETFE film is self-cleaning (due to its nonstick surface) and recyclable
- In sheet form as commonly employed for architecture, it is able to stretch to three times its length without loss of elasticity
- ETFE has an approximate tensile strength of 42 N/mm (6100 psi), with a working temperature range of -185 C to 150 C
- Able to stretch to three times its length without losing its elasticity
- When exposed to fire, it softens and shrinks away from the heat, naturally venting smoke out of a building
- Originally designed -around the 1970s
