Hi, I’m Sandra Aston, head of the
ODP Central Team – welcome toyour first ODP newsletter
I’ve worked in operational delivery all my
life, starting as a casual AA when I left
school and now I lead the team that helps
to develop the Operational Delivery
profession across government. I am proud
to be part of the largest Profession in the
civil service and one of nearly 240,000
people that supports the delivery of quality
services to customers each and every day.
Welcome to your
newsletter…
My team supports Ruth Owen as the Head of Profession and the
other Heads in each civil service department. I also work with Civil
Service Learning, Cabinet Office and others to deliver the activities
in the Profession’s Business Plan. You can read about some of
those activities in this month’s edition.
I really hope you enjoy this newsletter and find it informative.
Further details on all the articles, and much more, can be found at

News from your
department… DWP
DWP colleagues can find more about Operational
Delivery Profession by checking out the DWP intranet
site: DWP Intranet - ODP homepage
We’ve done a great deal in DWP to grow recognition of the
Operational Delivery Profession amongst colleagues, with over
57,000 now recognising themselves as Operational Delivery
Professionals on Civil Service Learning.
Awareness of the profession is intrinsic to our DWP
Operations Capability Standards that were launched at the
start of the year.
Growing our professionalism in the areas of customer
service, leadership, and digital and commercial skills has
also been high on our agenda with a number of supporting
initiatives underway.
In DWP we have exceeded our target to recruit 1,800
Apprentices with initial skills conversion or a commitment to
complete Level 2/3 ODP qualifications!
Our hugely popular ODP Leadership Programme to develop
talented individuals aspiring to become future leaders was
heavily subscribed last year with 176 applicants for 24
places - the ambition and talent is phenomenal! Those on
the Programme are expected to work towards a Chartered
Management Institute Level 6 Diploma in Leadership &
Management.

HMRC ODP Advocates will be promoting the profession by
running market stalls at a series of Region Live events starting
on the 1 March 2017 in Birmingham & Nottingham and finishing
on 25 April 2017 in Stoke. The events have been developed by
HMRC’s Building our Future Programme (HMRC intranet). The
HMRC ODP Advocate network is a fantastic resource for the
profession with around 500 colleagues working actively across
the department to support and promote the profession in HMRC.
Also to raise awareness about the profession and to showcase
the products and benefits of being part of ODP, the HMRC ODP
Team has been invited to run regular sessions as part of the
Customer Service Group Building High Performing Teams
programme. The programme aims to provide structured
development for HO and SO line managers in building high
performing teams, to improve performance, engagement and
customer experience… Look out for more info coming soon!
During the last four months HMRC HR ODP team have held
another successful Knowledge Based Qualification campaign
(HMRC intranet). We have added another 600 new learners to
our qualifications and upgraded 30 existing learners.

News from your

Our Debt Management ODP Team based in Livingston made the
final of the Chartered Institute of Credit Management (CICM)
British Credit Awards 2017 with representatives from the team
attending a glittering event in London on 7 February. The team
was nominated due to the success of engaging with the site and
developing our professionals by supporting them with
qualifications, learning opportunities and career advancement.
Whilst the team didn’t achieve first place, they were given a
Highly Commended Award which was very well deserved!
And finally, one of our ODP Advocates Roz Fleming (based in
Livingston) will be appearing as a Professions Case Study in
March’s Talking Points (HMRC intranet). Roz won’t mind telling
you that she is 50+, and having achieved a Level 2 and Level 3
qualification has used her new found confidence to join our
highly engaged ODP team on site. Roz has further developed
herself by successfully applying for the DM Accelerated
Development Programme (HMRC intranet) and she’s a great
example of how being active in the Operational Delivery
Profession can build skills, confidence and knowledge. Well
done Roz!

Through collaboration with departments we’ve developed
innovative approaches to support candidates, enabling them to
complete their qualifications within the deadlines and thus improve
qualification completion rates. We recently launched new tools to
support candidates on their learning journey including the cross
government Buddy Scheme and Qualification Journey Packs. We
are currently developing an ODP Learning Plan to help candidates
map their journey more effectively. Further information coming
soon, but in the meantime, why not join our ODP Qualifications
Group on Facebook?!
