Maimonides' 13 Principles of faith

1. I believe with perfect faith that the Creator, Blessed be His Name, is the Creator and Guide of everything that has been created; He alone has made, does make, and will make all things.

2. I believe with perfect faith that the Creator, Blessed be His Name, is One, and that there is no unity in any manner like His, and that He alone is our God, who was, and is, and will be.

3. I believe with perfect faith that the Creator, Blessed be His Name, has no body, and that He is free from all the properties of matter, and that there can be no (physical) comparison to Him whatsoever.

4. I believe with perfect faith that the Creator, Blessed be His Name, is the first and the last.

In answer, our Sages comment): “He who cleaves unto a [Torah] scholar is deemed by the Torah as if he had actually become attached to the Shechinah (the Divine Presence).” This seems difficult to comprehend: How can one equate cleaving to a Torah scholar with cleaving to the Shechinah? However, in light of the above, this is readily understood. For, through attachment to the scholars, the Nefesh, Ruach and Neshamah of the ignorant are bound up and united with their original essence and their root in Supernal Wisdom, (and thereby with G-d Himself, since) He and His wisdom are one, and “He is the Knowledge...” (As for those who willfully sin and rebel against the Torah sages: How do they receive their spiritual nurture and life? Spiritual life and nurture flow only where there is a desire to nurture and give life. In answer to this, the text continues: the nurture of their Nefesh, Ruach and Neshamah comes from the hind-part, as it were, of the Nefesh, Ruach and Neshamah of the scholars.) Nurture from “the hind-part” can be understood by way of comparison to one who gives an object to his enemy — obviously, not out of a true desire to give, but rather due to some external factor. The grudging reluctance with which he gives will be reflected in his manner; he will turn away from him, tossing the object to his enemy over his shoulder. The same is true in the spiritual sphere. When spiritual nurture is given unwillingly, it is described as coming from “the hind-part” of the giver — an external level of nurture. Nevertheless, even those who rebel against the sages receive some measure of spiritual nourishment from them. For every soul, without exception, must be bound up with its root and source, as explained earlier. The level of nurture they receive, is however from the “hind-part” of the souls of the sages. Having concluded that every Jew has a holy soul which emanates “from above” (from Supernal Wisdom), the Alter Rebbe now states that even the quality (the “rank” or “level”) of each individual soul is determined only by factors “from above” — spiritual factors, such as the soul’s above-mentioned descent throughHishtalshelut. No actions of this physical world can determine its quality and rank. The Alter Rebbe makes this statement indirectly by clarifying a quotation from theZohar which seems to indicate the contrary.

1. So that you remember the day you came out of the land of Egypt all the days of your life.

2. But beware and guard your soul scrupulously, lest you forget the things which your eyes have seen, and lest they be removed from your heart all the days of your life; make known to your children and to your children's children [what you saw] on the day when you stood before the Lord your God at Chorev [Sinai].

3. Remember what Amalek did to you on the way as you came out of Egypt: how he met you on the way, and cut down all the weak who straggled behind you, when you were weary and exhausted; and he did not fear God. Therefore, when the Lord your God will relive you of all your enemies around you, in the land which the Lord your God gives you a hereditary portion, you shall blot out the memory of Amalek from under heaven. Do not forget!

4. Remember, do not forget, how you provoked the Lord your God to wrath in the desert.

5. Remember what the Lord your God did to Miriam on the way, as you came out of Egypt.

6. Remember the Shabbat day to sanctify it.

Greetings and Blessings!

In response to your letter of 28 Sivan, where you write an outline of your life and current situation in the military, etc.

It is certainly not necessary to remind you, that just as in a regular army which operates under the discipline of obedience and that despite the fact that at first, one may not understand the need for this system, nevertheless it doesn’t take long for someone with a healthy mind to comprehend the necessity of following orders of his superior (even a commander of flesh and blood, superior only in relative terms,) how much more so, does this apply to every Jew, soldiers in Almighty G-d’s army, with regards to the orders of the Commander in Chief, the King of Kings, the Holy One, Blessed be His Name.

Just as in the analogy, the commander in chief does not come to each individual soldier to convey the order directly without intermediaries, rather there is a chain of command whereby soldiers closer to him in rank will convey the instructions and since they are appointed to this position by the commander in chief, they essentially represent him, as an emissary who stands in place of the one who sends him.

So too in the analogue, the instructions of the King of Kings, the Holy One Blessed be His Name, are transmitted through those who received the Torah as it was transmitted throughout the generations, through the Tannaim, Amoraim and rabbinic instructors and teachers who followed the guidelines of our Torah, G-d’s Torah.

Similarly, just as in the analogy, the discipline and obedience is not to cause harm, to crush and break the soldier, but on the contrary, the stronger he is committed to this system of discipline, the higher he will rise in rank and it will benefit him, so too but in a far greater way, does this apply to one’s obedience when it comes to accepting the obligations of Torah and Mitzvot in one’s daily life, and further elaboration of this would be superfluous.

May G-d Almighty, who supervises each one with divine personal providence, lead you on the positive path before Him, with both material and spiritual good.

Shemá Israel - Traducción

Antes de ablar cosas santas de Tora se debe bendecir la bendicion a la Tora. Esta bendicion se dice solo una ves por dia. Y la bendicion del "Shema Israel" se dice dos veces en el

dia: una ves de mañana y la segunda de noche.

Benedito eres Tú, Adonai nuestro Dios, Rey del universo, que nos ha elegido de entre todas las naciones y nos ha dado Su Torá. Bendito eres Tú

Adonai que da la Torá.

Oye, israel, Adonai es nuestro Dios, Adonai es Uno.

Bendito sea el nombre de la gloria de Su reino por siempre jamás.

Amarás a Adonai tu Dios con todo tu corazón, con toda tu alma, y con toda tu fuerza. Y estas palabras que Yo te ordeno hoy estarán sobre tu corazón. Las enseñarás a fondo a tus hijos, y hablarás de ellas al estar sentado en tu casa y al andar por el camino, al acostarte y al levantarte. doorposts of your house and upon your gates.

May it be Your will, G-d, our G-d and the G-d of our fa-thers, that You should lead us in peace and direct our steps in peace, and guide us in peace, and support us in peace, and cause us to reach our destination in life, joy, and peace (If one intends to return immediately, one adds: and return us in peace). Save us from every enemy and ambush, from robbers and wild beasts on the trip, and from all kinds of punishments that rage and come to the world. May You confer blessing upon the work of our hands and grant me grace, kindness, and mercy in Your eyes and in the eyes of all who see us, and bestow upon us abundant kindness and hearken to the voice of our prayer, for You hear the prayers of all. Blessed are You G-d, who hearkens to prayer.
