Nearly 160 summer interns from 14 oil and gas companies, servicecompanies and offshore drilling contractors attended the debut ofOEC’s Industry Salute to Interns held at Minute Maid Park July 25. The entertaining and educational day began with a luncheon at noonand concluded with a baseball game at the ballpark that evening.Between those events, interns were treated to a non-stop program ofguest speakers, a “technology comedian”, door prizes and a reception.Interns viewed exhibits from industry organizations and companies andmet with representatives of sponsoring companies before moving to theballpark for a game between the 2005 National League ChampionHouston Astros and the Cincinnati Reds. (Unfortunately, the GoodGuys lost.)

The Salute to Interns began with welcoming remarks by MCs SteveNance, President of Peoples Energy Production, and Dave Dunlap,President, International Division of BJ Services. Following a buffetlunch, the program moved to Union Station adjacent to Minute MaidPark where Nance and Dunlap discussed the fundamentals of energysupply and demand and the technology aspects of the oil and gas industry. They then introduced Dr. Wade Adams, who presented an overview of nanotechnology and the oil and gas industry.Following this presentation Helge Haldorsen, President of HydroGulf of Mexico, shared some entertaining statistics and then introducedthe “Traveler” video produced by Hydro Corporation.

Nance and Dunlap opened the next segment of the program withinformation about the demographics of the industry’s workforce and the

need for new talent. Marilyn Kennedy, a nationally recognized management consultant and author, tackled the very serious subject of“Understanding the Demographics of the Evolving Workforce” in a veryentertaining presentation.

The MCs then detailed the all important perception of the global oil and gas industry as well as the personnel side of the business,

The Gulf of Mexico has so far been spared a hurricane this season, however, the Gulf Coast’s and the nation’s experience withHurricanes Katrina and Rita in 2005 illustrate that people shouldn’tbecome complacent.

Dr. Joseph A. Pratt, Cullen Professor of History and Business at theUniversity of Houston, discussed How Hurricanes Affect the Gulf asSeptember’s Guest Speaker on the Ocean Star. Dr. Pratt is the author ofnumerous articles and books about the history of the offshore energyindustry and is one of the nation’s foremost scholars on the dynamics and history of the petroleum industry. His presentation featured insight-ful information about how hurricanes affect the industry and life in theGulf Coast region.

Dr. Pratt has a Bachelor degree in History-Economics from RiceUniversity and Masters and Doctorate in History from Johns HopkinsUniversity. He participated in the Public Broadcasting Corp’s (PBS)series The Prize, the PBS show Brother Can You Spare a Billion, and theHistory Channel’s Modern Marvels: Offshore Oil.

Offshore industry career exhibit expands OEC’s educational outreach

Energy at Work, the new offshore industry career exhibit, is complete and ready for visitors to find out which careers in the offshoreindustry complement their individual personality traits. The exhibit isfunded by Halliburton Foundation, Albert and Ethel HerzsteinCharitable Foundation, and the New York Mercantile Exchange(NYMEX) Charitable Foundation.

This new career exhibit provides educational material about thenumerous and varied careers in the offshore energy industry with thegoal of generating interest among children and youth to pursue careerswithin the industry. With current data about the lack of young peoplepursuing careers in the energy industry causing widespread concernabout the future talent pool, this new career exhibit greatly expands theCenter’s educational outreach by making much-needed career information available to every visitor touring the Ocean Star.

The exhibit features six colorful panels outlining distinctivepersonality traits with examples of offshore jobs that correlate toeach of these types of personalities. To determine their personalitytype, visitors can complete the simple questionnaire at the exhibit.Their answers will direct them to the exhibit panel showing variousoffshore jobs performed by persons with their same personalitytraits.

In addition to finding out about offshore career possibilities, visitors can also view additional exhibit panels detailing what it takesto work offshore, the types of businesses working offshore plus thebusinesses that provide support services, and the types of engineersworking in the offshore industry.

Energy at work! emphasizes that there are thousands of talentedand committed people with various skills making up today's offshoreenergy industry. The exhibit also challenges the visitor to consider a career path in the offshore industry to fill the pressing need for additional talented personnel to meet the world's future demand forenergy.

Visitors to the Ocean Star can complete the career assessment questionnaire at the exhibitto determine which offshore industry jobs suit their personality traits.

Ocean Star needs volunteer industry guides

Do you have a first hand knowledge of the dynamic offshore industry?

Do you feel it’s important that others understand how thiscomplex industry works to provide this unequalled resource?
