Object of the game

In “Oedipus the King” choices were made to try to avoid Oedipus’s fate by defying the gods, but they actually made it happen. In this game you will make choices to not defy the gods and at the same time avoiding Oedipus’s fate.

Jocasta and Laius are told by a prophet that he will be fated to kill his father and marry his mother

Despite this, they have a baby and they have two options

Get rid of the baby by trying to have it killed

Lauis and Jocasta tell Oedipus of his fate when he is eighteen.

He kills himself

Oedipus has tried to defy the gods, and has died doing so.

On the way to Corinth, Oedipus is killed by a passing horse because he tried to defy the gods.

Oedipus becomes very careful around his father. One day during a heated argument, Oedipus accidently pushed his father down the stairs. Oedipus kills himself right away to escape his fate

He stays in Thebes

Oedipus gets arrested for killing Laius and is sentenced to life in prison.

A messenger is sent to kill the baby but can’t do it, and gives the baby to a shepherd

The shepherd knows the baby’s fate and keeps it to protect it

The shepherd does not know the baby’s fate and gives him to the king and queen of Corinth

Oedipus grows up with the shepherd, living a very secluded life

Oedipus does not try to avoid his fate and he doesn’t defy the gods.

Explanation

Fate vs. Free will plays a large part in the outcome of this play. Choices were made to try to prevent Oedipus’s fate from happening, but when he doesn’t know his fate or accepts it, he has no motivation to try to defy the gods. His free will became his fate through his choices.

Oedipus grew up thinking the king and queen were his real parents. Eventually he feels he doesn’t belong and sees a prophet. The prophet tell him of his fate.

Oedipus runs away to avoid killing his father and marrying his mother

Oedipus stays in the Thebes to face his fate.

While on the way to Thebes, Oedipus comes to a crossroads and is told to yield so he must decide to yield on not yield.

Oedipus arrives in Thebes without killing Laius and goes to see a prophet and finds his fate has not changed

Oedipus goes hunting to vent his frustrations. Unfortunatly Laius was hunting the same day and he accidently killed him

Oedipus could turn himself in

Oedipus could return to Thebes leaving Laius dead.

The sphinx is terrorizing Thebes. Oedipus could try and solve the riddle, or not try.

After killing Laius, the people of Thebes force Oedipus to try and solve the riddle because they are desperate

As a result of answering the riddle correctly, Oedipus marries Jocasta and they have children. The people of Thebes are suffering and beg Oedipus to do something He has Creon ask Apollo’s prophet what needs to be done

He prays for the gods’ mercy on his people.

Thebes is destroyed because the corruption was never removed and Oedipus remains blind to what he has done.

Oedipus finds the truth about what he is and has done.

He blinds himself so that he doesn’t have to see what he has done, still avoiding his fate

He exiles himself, understanding what he has done and getting rid of the corruption

Oedipus is still avoiding his fate and killed his father and married his mother.

Oedipus has too much hubris and the Sphinx eats him

The kind of Corinth dies of natural causes, leaving Oedipus next in line for the throne.

Oedipus feels somewhat responsible for the king’s death and runs away in attempt to avoid the rest of his fate.

Oedipus stays in Corinth and become King.

Oedipus has successfully avoided his fate without defying the gods.
