The following students showed great
character in the month of September!
We are proud of you!
Passport to Peace was a big success, with more than 20 speakers repre-senting many coun-tries. Students got to see money, sing songs, and sample food from the coun-tries they visited, and also got stamps in their replica passports.
Thank you to all of our
presenters for making this
learning opportunity fun for
all of our students!
The Kindergartners had a
wonderful visit to Holiday
Farms Pumpkin Patch on Hal-
loween. The students played,
had duck races, and even got
to go on a hay ride and pick
out a pumpkin.
Third graders recently spent a day at the Coastal Dis-covery Museum at Honey Horn Plantation. Students were able to partake in a nature walk and learn about native species, some of which used to be used for me-dicinal purposes. Afterward, students created leaf print shirts using fallen leaves from those very spe-cies! Students were also able to dissect owl pellets, discovering the bones of animals that had fallen prey to the owls. During a tour of the salt marshes, stu-dents saw crabs, marsh snails, and even an egret or two!
On Thursday, Oct. 26th, students and
parents in 1st and 2
nd grade enjoyed a
trailer ride on the beautiful Pinckney Island Wildlife Refuge. During the
tour, students learned about the birds that nest in the trees, the relationships of animals that cohabitate there, and
the rich history of the island.
First grade had an awesome time at MADRAC Farms. We played on a tire playground, slid down a huge hay slide, and jumped in a bounce house. We also fed hungry goats
and went on a fun hay ride. We had a blast finding our way through the corn maze. Lastly, we picked the perfect pumpkin to bring home.
Mrs. Meissen volunteered in the GT Art class this month
where they discussed recycled plastic art with the students.
They created art with plastic and other recycled products.
Thank you Mrs. Goodwin for inviting Mrs. Meissen to Okatie
Elementary GT after school art program. Mrs. Meissen wants
to ensure that all endangered species survive at least one
more generation. Her objective is to educate students about
the impacts of plastic, plastic pollution, and recycling.
She is dedicated to the preservation of endangered species
and our environment.
Our annual Boo, Scoot, and Boogie was a huge success! Ms. Underhill won the "Kiss the Pig" Con-
test, and she couldn’t wait to kiss that piggie! There were over 350 in attendance, with PTO raising
over $3000.00! The fourth grade bake sale made over $550.00 to support their Young Astronauts
club, and the fifth grade concession stand made $275.00 to support their trip to Camp Driftwood.
Thank you everyone who came out to support our annual event. Many thanks to all of the parents
and volunteers who helped decorate, work in the booths, clean-up, shop or make baked goods. A
special thank you to Mrs. Dubose, Mrs. Parrott, Mrs. Ernst, Mrs. Davidson, and Mrs. Andreoletti for
their work making booths, setting up, cleaning up, etc. Thank you! Also many thanks to all of the
Okatie Staff who attended and helped out and our owlsome custodians! Fun memories were made
tonight.
The 4th grade and 5
th grade classes were visited by
4 professional musicians from the Hilton Head Or-chestra as part of the Music Bridges Pro-
gram. These musicians gave a 30 minute presen-tation where the students listened to famous musi-cal works and were able to discuss various things with the musicians, from what it’s like being a pro-fessional musician to how sound is produced on
the different instruments.
Benjamin McCullough was chosen as the school nominee for courage. Ben shows
courage every day by trying things that are not easy for him to do.
Congratulations to Mrs. Lane on receiving a grant from the Foundation for Educational Excellence. She received a grant for $750 to purchase bicy-cles for her students to read and ride. Be sure to stop her class to see the students in action.
A musical presentation by 4th grade, 5th grade, and OES Chorus
The 4th and 5th graders, as well as the chorus members, did an outstanding job with
their grade level show, Space Explorers. They sang confidently and proudly, and we
are very proud of them! Thank you to Ms. Underhill (our music teacher) for putting
together another wonderful show and always finding a way to connect it to the stu-
dents learning. Also, thank you to Ms. Goodwin for the amazing planets that were
hung on the stage! They are beautifully done!!
