WELCOME From Your Director!

How wonderful it is that you have chosen to spend your Tuesday nights here with us. Women come here for many different reasons…friendship, fun, competition, achievement, personal growth, to get out of the house or they

3

just love to sing. Whatever your reasons for being here, I hope you will leave here every week fulfilled. This is a place where we work together to achieve our goals and sometimes, we’re having so much fun we’re not even aware that the work has been done!

Please make yourself at home on our risers and start making friends right away. I’m sure you have expertise in some area that would greatly benefit Song of Atlanta. Share your talents with us and we will strive to help you become what you would like to be, whether it’s a better singer and performer or an awesome committee chair. I ask you to do 3 things as a chorus member:

Be here when we’re here – the unit is not complete without you. Get into a smaller group - find a committee where you can blossom. Help us carry the load – let your imagination run free and let’s reach

our goals together.

I’m glad you are a part of us and I hope we’ll be friends for a long time. Please feel free to ask questions of the music team or me whenever you need answers.

Sing-cerely,

Becki [email protected]

WELCOME from Membership Team

You’ve passed your audition; you’ve filled out your application to become a Sweet Adeline; you’ve written your first check to the organization. Now what?

Song of Atlanta is thrilled you have joined us and it is the job of your Membership Team to get you off to the best start possible! There is a team in place – YOUR support team – to answer questions and help you get organized and ready to

4

perform with your new chorus. Do you have a general question? Ask your Big Sister! Do you have a money question? Ask our Treasurer! Want to know about costumes or makeup? Ask our Costume and Makeup Chairs!

Our hope is that within a short time, you will be singing and dancing along with us on the risers and feeling like a complete star, because that’s how we do it at Song of Atlanta. You will find like-minded women who love to sing and perform, you will receive weekly performance education from our brilliant in-house coaches and the always-fabulous Becki Hine, and you will find friends who will last a lifetime.

This New Member Handbook will be your guide throughout your first year as a “Rookie.” All the contact information for people who can answer your questions is contained in this Handbook. Consult it often and never hesitate to check in with your New Member Coordinator, Robyn Matula, or with me. We want you to feel as comfortable as possible while you learn with us. This will be an experience like no other, and we are glad you’re here!

The Pitch Pipe

This magazine is mailed to you quarterly by Sweet Adelines International. Your International dues include your subscription to The Pitch Pipe. It contains information and pictures that will help you learn more about the organization and the music that we sing.

REHEARSALS

ARRIVE EARLY - It is helpful to arrive early each week to meet up with the people you need to see. Get that happy chatter out of the way as on the risers it’s annoying to others and does not display respect to Becki. When physical warm ups start, you need to be on the risers and ready to go!

8

CHECK IN - Check in on the attendance sheet for your voice part. The attendance sheets are in binders on a table in the hallway heading into the rehearsal hall.

CHOREO REVIEW – During contest season (or before our Annual Show), a member of the choreography team will usually arrive at rehearsals early to help with choreography. Choreography videos are available on-line through Groupanizer. To sing on stage with us you must know the choreography!

ATTENDANCE - Attendance at rehearsal and coaching sessions is vital to what we do. Every effort should be made to attend. If you are unable to attend, please email Becki, your Section Leader, your President and your Membership Chair. We frequently learn at a lively pace, and you don’t want to miss those valuable rehearsals or any of the changes we make to the music!

Board of DirectorsThe Board of Directors (BOD) consists of 8 members elected by the chorus for a two-year term to function as the administrative arm of SOA- work for the business side of the chorus. The BOD manages finances, budget, adherence to SAI and SOA by-laws and regulations, rehearsal venue, riser transportation, the web site and the overall solvency and growth of the organization. Members of the Board of Directors are listed on the Cast of Characters on page 6.

Music TeamAs our Director, Becki selects members of the Music Team and they work together to plan and execute the vocal and visual performance of SOA. Decisions on music,

9

costumes, and choreography and performance packages are formulated by this team. Members of the Music team are listed on the Cast of Characters on page 7.

NEW MEMBER PRIORITIES

One of the main concerns of every new member is…WHAT DO I LEARN FIRST? What songs are the priorities? Do I have to learn them all at one time? Well, we’re going to try and answer those questions and make it easy for you!

First of all, you can’t learn all the songs with choreography at one time. The best way to learn is to look at the “Priority List” below and learn songs in that order. Many of the songs have choreography and the Riser Choreography Team, Karen Baker and Kit Wolfe, are available to assist you.

BUT…learn the song first (words and notes). When that is solid, start adding choreography. (*Songs with choreography – (c)*)

1. Baby Won’t You Please (c) 13. Top of the World2. Next Time I Love 14. You Got A Friend3. You’re Nobody Til Somebody 15. Blue Skies4. You Make Me Feel So Young 16. Down to the River5. Born This Way 17. Somewhere Over The Rainbow6. Come What May 18. All That Jazz (c) 7. Wake Me Up 19. Diamonds Medley (c)8. Sweet Pea 20. The CanCan (c)9. Great Day 21. Because We Can CanCan (c)10. Rhythm of Life (c) 22. It is Well With My Soul11. Somebody To Love 23. Star Spangled Banner

Music Qualifying ProceduresYour section leader will assign a Section Mentor to you. When qualifying on older repertoire and contest music, you will record yourself singing your part into a digital recorder (or tape recorder) and then give the media to your Mentor. She will evaluate your singing and let you know if you passed, or if you still have some things to work on before qualifying. Remember, you must pass each song in order to perform it with the chorus. That includes the audition song!

The method of qualification described below will be used for catching up on repertoire songs.

1. Hand in your recording media with something on it!! Don’t laugh – many have turned in blank recordings or those where the batteries have run low so it is so slow you can’t be understood.

2. Say your name, date, and song into the recorder at the beginning.3. Turn in only the media that you really think has passed.4. Don’t try to qualify on too many songs at once. If you cram to learn too many at a

time, the retention is short term, especially on the songs we seldom sing. One or two songs a week is really sufficient and the most that is expected of you.

5. In order for Song of Atlanta to be “all we can be”, you need to be all you can be. That’s the reason for qualifying, in case you’re wondering. The media is listened to for 100% accuracy on words and notes, breaths in the right places, no breathing in the wrong places and for proper vowel production. You may get comments or compliments (hopefully, many of these) in your feedback. These are to help you and the chorus as a whole. If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to ask your Mentor or Section Leader.

As we learn new songs with the chorus, we will all try to qualify at approximately the same time. The Music Team will designate a particular rehearsal as Gold Medal Night, and if you qualify on that night, the Music Team presents you with something special such as a “gold” medal or candy. However, there are opportunities to qualify at other rehearsal nights as well. A word of caution: don’t wait until the last minute (week before or week of the deadline for qualifying for show, contest, performance, etc.). Try to hand in your media within a few weeks of Gold Medal Night. If you get down to the wire and have only one week to qualify and you don’t pass the first time, you may have a very stressful time becoming eligible to perform. The goal we all have in this organization is to achieve! (The Director may ask those singers who have not passed within 3 weeks of Gold Medal Taping Night to stand and sing to the side of the risers.)

11

Another method we will occasionally use for qualifying on new songs is called STAR Quartets. For this, you will sing for your Mentor one-on-one while the chorus (or small group) is singing. At least one singer from each part will be qualifying at the same time. This process allows for instant feedback from your Mentor and reduces the problems caused by technical difficulties, etc.

Suggestions – How to Learn Your Music

This is a program to assist you in learning music. It is only a suggestion until you develop a system of your own. The success of this program is contingent upon the effective listening skills of the learner, much more than with the musical background or ability to read music. Any of these steps may be repeated before continuing on to the next step. Remember, EACH step is important to the overall success of learning ALL the right notes, words and timing of your new song.

1. Listen to the music on the master learning media while closing your eyes. This will familiarize you with notes, timing and general “flavor” of the song.

2. Watch the notes on your music while you listen to the learning media. DO NOT SING YET!

3. REPEAT step #24. Watch the words while you listen to the learning media. DO NOT SING

YET!5. On a separate piece of paper (or on the back of your music), write down all

the lyrics to the new song. Watch your words while you listen to the learning media. (NO, YOU CAN’T SING YET!)

6. Watch the notes on your music again while you listen to the learning media. Remember – no singing!

7. Watch the words while you listen to the learning media. Be careful – not a sound!

8. Try to write down all the words again on a separate sheet of paper without looking at your printed music. If you have trouble, listen to the learning media again. Watch the words and then try writing again without looking. Stay on this step until you have all the right words written without looking back at the music.

9. Hooray! Finally, you can add YOUR voice! Now, watch the notes on your music while you hum along with the learning media. HUM…HUM…singing is next.

10.Watch the words on the music while you SING along with the learning media. If you have any difficulty, circle the spot on your music as you go all the way through. Then, go back and listen (don’t sing) those parts again.

11.Put your own practice learning media in your recorder. Now, on your own media, SING the new part all the way through without looking at your music.

12.YOU’RE ABOUT TO GRADUATE! WATCH your music and listen to your own media and see if you are correct. You should be wonderful! But, should you have any doubt, go back and check your part again on the master.

12

Concentrate on listening to the parts you circled earlier to be sure you have made corrections.

CONGRATULATIONS!!!

COMPETITIONS Regional Competition - Region 14 includes choruses and quartets from Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia. Regional competition is held each Spring within the Region. The first place chorus earns the opportunity to represent Region 14 at International Competition the next year. You will need to be there Friday afternoon through Sunday morning.

NEXT REGIONAL CONTEST: CONCORD, NC MARCH 2020

International Competition is held each year in the fall in venues all over the US and Canada! Choruses and quartets who have won their Regional Competitions are invited to compete 18 months later! International Competition is an exciting experience and you will want to be there early in the week to attend all of our rehearsals and do some sight-seeing!

NEXT INTERNATIONAL CONTEST: LOUSIVILLE OCTOBER 2020

REGIONAL EDUCATION

16

Fall Music School – are educational seminars held once a year by the Region. It is a weekend filled with fun, education, coaching by queens of harmony, performing and fellowship with “Sweet Ads” from all over Region 14.

Winter Quartet Workshop - is a wonderful opportunity for registered quartets to receive coaching from some our Region’s best coaches. It is also a great opportunity for individual members to come and observe. There are general session classes that are open to all workshop attendees. This workshop can be particularly helpful to the newer Sweet Adeline.

SHOWS

SOA’s annual show is usually in the Spring and is one of OUR largest fundraising events. All members are expected to perform at the show. It is a

17

fun event with a theme and creative dialogue by an emcee between SOA performances. We routinely invite guest quartets to perform.

Following our performances, we have an “Afterglow”. This is comparable to a cast party, and we sell tickets to family and friends.. This is a fun time to relax and be entertained by the world’s best quartets!

COACHINGSeveral times during the year we bring in experts to coach us. These coaching sessions are amazing skill development opportunities and crucial as we prepare for Regional and International competition! All our coaches

18

are a “not to miss”! These sessions are very IMPORTANT – Don’t miss out! We have two coaches we use on a regular basis: Sandy Marron, Master 700 Director of Lions Gate Chorus in Vancouver,BC

Sandy is a Sound Judge, a member of the International Faculty and she became a “Queen of Harmony” with the quartet Brava in 2004. She is the incredible director of the ROARING 2nd place chorus Lions Gate. Her husband, Tim Marron, also provides private vocal instruction when he is in town. Ryan Heller, Master 700 Director Alamo Metro Chorus in Houston, Tx

Ryan, formerly directed Pride of Portland Chorus to multiple top 5 International Chorus Medals (currently ranked 7th internationally) now lives in Texas and is the new director of Alamo Metro Chorus. His electric energy and creative spirit are contagious!!

RETREATPrior to International Competition, one weekend in August, SOA has a retreat.. We go away for the weekend and have high-powered coaching sessions. This is an extremely IMPORTANT weekend and your attendance is strongly recommended.

19

The retreat runs from Friday night until noon on Sunday. On, Saturday night The Rookies entertain us with a preplanned skit and then we have a party and let our hair down with a “No Talent Talent Show”. This is a weekend of hard work and lots of fun!

GUEST NIGHT!! Guest nights are a great time for you to show your enthusiasm and “practice” your best performance in front of a smaller group!

20

Remember how excited you were to first hear SOA? Just think how fun it’ll be to sing for prospective members! As always - YOU MUST PASS ALL PERFORMANCE REPETOIRE BEFORE YOU CAN SING ON THE SHOW! (See your section leader for further information or arrangements)

SING OUTS!! We’ve performed the National Anthem all over the city (Atlanta Braves, NASCAR races, Georgia Tech basketball, Gwinnett Braves) as well as performances at corporate parties and seasonal parties during the holidays. It was incredible to sing at The Fabulous Fox Theatre and The Dothan Opera House. SOA is proud to perform at charitable events and venues including Ronald McDonald House!. We also perform with Atlanta Vocal Project on their annual Christmas Concert. YOU MUST PASS YOUR SING OUT REPETOIRE

21

BEFORE YOU CAN SING IN PUBLIC. (see your section leader for information)
