The Arc of Anchorage has just opened a new art studio and gallery, situated in downtown Anchorage, at 425 D Street. Artists experience a professional studio space with dedicated facilities for ceramics, stained glass, painting, beading, and printmaking, plus many more options. Our new location increases exposure for our artists and the work they create. Sparc will continue to celebrate self-expression and individuality while encouraging social enterprise. We look forward to more involvement within the art community, plus collaborations with other galleries, artists and retail spaces. Sparc’s phone number is (907) 646-4664.

Foster Family Success Story Friday, July 11, was a proud day for one of our foster families! This is the day that Geny and Juhn Antonio were granted guardianship of Charles Tangman! Charlie was born prematurely on February 17, 2008 and at that time he was diagnosed with Septo Optic Dysplasia and Chronic Lung Disease. Due to Charlie’s complex medical needs he lived in the NICU at Providence Hospital for the first nine months of his life. On December 26, 2009, Geny and Juhn Antonio opened their hearts to Charlie and he has thrived ever since. Charlie is beyond happy and the Antonio’s are beside themselves with joy to be granted the opportunity to be Charlie’s legal guardians.

With the goal of bringing the public into The Arc of Anchorage, we have spruced up our interior and filled our downstairs walls with beautiful portraits of the individuals that receive our services. The title of the collection is “Here’s Looking at You”, which was photographed for The Arc of Anchorage by AffinityFilms. If you haven’t stopped by The Arc for a tour lately, you are invited to join us anytime. The Arc will host a First Friday event very soon.

Supported Employment Services

Creating good in the community . . .

Patrick is on staff at Safeway in Anchorage and has had amazing success at his job.

The Arc of Anchorage’s Supported Employment Services (SES) assists adults who experience developmental disabilities and/or mental health or substance abuse issues obtain and maintain jobs in the Anchorage community. SES is designed to assist each individual gain the daily living skills and on-the-job skills necessary for successful employment. SES also works with employers to increase understanding of ways to help people with disabilities learn and grow in a work environment. SES provides consumers with long-term training and support before they move into community employment. Through the effective management of funds, SES has the capacity to provide services to more people transitioning to their post educational lives.

New Programs at The Arc of AnchorageAfter School Fast Facts Location: The Arc of Anchorage After School Program Room 2211 Arca Drive, Anchorage, AK 99508 Contact Number: After School Program Team Leader, 907-277-6677 Age: 12-16 yrs old Hours: 2:00 pm-6:00 pm Monday through Friday Fees: Medicaid Waiver and DD Grant; small daily fee to cover food and activities ($5/day). Transportation: Transportation can be arranged and/or provided by the school, family and The Arc. Food: A snack is provided every day. Medications: Can be given with a doctor’s order, after any necessary training is provided.

After School Program The Arc After School Program opens its doors for the first time on August 20, 2014. The Arc has been developing this program for over a year after overwhelming requests from the community to offer this unmet need. This program is for youth from ages 12-16 who experience a developmental or intellectual disability. The program is designed to provide fun, skill-building activities in a safe peer group setting that will accommodate individual needs. The youth who are enrolled in the program will have the opportunity to participate in peer socialization, arts and crafts, food preparation, sensory activities, outdoor physical activities, assistance with homework and a fun variety of regular community outings.

Kids on the Block The Kids on the Block puppets are a national puppet troupe that was founded in 1977 in direct response to US Public Law 94-142, which required children experiencing disabilities to be educated in the least restricted environment possible. The puppets will travel to schools around the Anchorage area and teach children about many different social issues including bullying, divorce, as well as children experiencing disabilities such as Autism, Cerebral Palsy, Down Syndrome and d/Deafness. It is all about teaching kids that everyone is different and that’s OK!
