365 days sure does go by fast. It's already been a year since our last annual meeting for the United Way of the Kearney Area. It has been a busy and productive year for our partner agencies and board members. The board and staff at the United Way work very hard to support and promote the 21 agencies we work with in our six-county area.
-chairs Kent Barney and Michael Schnieders for their commitment to the United Way. They've gathered duck adoptions, shot free throws, and served a great meal or two for the betterment of the communities we serve. Also, a big thank you to our board members, campaign volunteers, and agencies for all of your hard work this past year. Whether you donated as an individual, small
business, corporate gifts, or one of 476 first time givers, you all took the challenge of BEING THE ONE!!
The United Way can look back on 50 successful years with raising over $14 million dollars for those in need. I look forward to the United Way of the Kearney Area to continue their support in the areas of Education, Income, and Health. With the collaboration of our board members, campaign
chairs, and our community, the organization can continue to improve the lives of those we serve.
I appreciate all the time, effort, and talent that Lisa, Dawn, and Ashley give to the United Way. With all of their hard work, they
keep the United Way running smoothly.
It is with heartfelt gratitude that I have had the opportunity to serve as your Board President. My term as President may be over, but my family and I will continue to Give, Advocate, and Volunteer.
Thank you,
Mark R. McBride 2013-2014 President of Board United Way of the Kearney Area

United Way of the Kearney Area
Early in 1964 a group of Kearney businessmen including Plant
Shoes Owner Ron Cope, Spelts Lumber Company Owner Carl
Spelts, Bob Anthes, and Real Estate Agent Rod Johnson.
On July 22, 1964 a group of Kearney citizens charged with
organizing a community fund drive gathered to discuss the
formation of an organization they referred to as the Community
Chest. Bob Anthes acted as chairperson for the organizational
meeting where the Executive Director the Grand Island United
structure. Members of the group included Al Mathis, Rod
Johnson, Orba Brink, Dick Kizzier and Pat Nefzger.
By September of the same year, the Kearney United Fund had its first Board of
Directors meeting on September 16 where they ratified Articles of Incorporation and
Agency Agreements for what was officially named the
Kearney United Fund.
The first Campaign Kickoff was held at the Fort Kearny Ho-
tel on October 14. Mike Yanney returned to Kearney to
speak at the event. The greatest challenge was gaining
acceptance of the concept of payroll deduction. Almost 20
businesses stepped up to encourage employee giving.
Kearney was also linked to Interstate 80 in 1964.
Over the first decade the campaign results went from
$33,013 to $64,276.
By 1974 the United Fund provided funds to 9 agencies including the Red Cross, Salvation Army, Buffalo Count Association for Retarded Citizens, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, Camp Fire Girls, Arthritis Foundation, Little League Baseball and the Crisis Line. Each agency was required to provide volunteers for the annual campaign based on the dollars requested. At the annual meeting in January 1976, a
motion was passed to join United Way of
America under the name Kearney United Way. Membership in
the United Way system allowed a brand identity with the
logo. The campaign exceeded $100,000 for the first time in
1979. That same year United Way hired Pat Munro as its first
full-time Executive Director.
By 1984 volunteers and the media were
referring to the organization as United
Way of the Kearney Area although a
formal name change was not filed with
the State of Nebraska until 2000.
In 1989, United Way shattered their
campaign goal of $288,571 with a
grand total of $321,174. This
milestone marked the first time
United Way had broken the $300,000
mark.
1996 at the direction of United Way of America, United
Ways begin measuring
outcomes and funding individual
programs instead of total agency
operations. That same year,
hosted the Olympic Torch Run,
including a route through
Kearney.
In 2001 the Tri-City Storm hosted the first Jersey Auction to Benefit
United Way raising $7,500.

Stopping to look back at the last 50 years has been good on many levels.
I am reminded that there have always been challenges.
In 1964, the country was mourning President Kennedy, investigating President Johnson, worrying about our troops in Vietnam, and frustrated that the Soviets appeared to be winning the race to space. Today I hear disagreements about the economy, accusations about our President, concerns over our involvement in other countries, and other day-to-day worries.
None of the worries of the day stopped our founding board members from starting
After 50 years of support, we need to renew our commitment to the community and our donors to seek the best possible solutions to the issues our people face.
Not only have thousands of people been helped by the United Way Partner Agencies, but thousands have supported and joined in the work of the United Way.
memorabilia, it strikes me that this United Way is much more than a non-profit; it is a family of caring people in our community. Dedicated beyond belief, the Kearney Area is blessed to have every single supporter of the United Way. There are no better people to do this work than the ones sitting beside you right now.
Together we give hope to so many people. Together we LIVE UNITED.
It is a privilege to serve with you all.

Message from the Co-Chairs
Greetings Friends, Wow! What a ride! The 2013-2014 United Way campaign was an exciting and humbling time for both of us. It has been an honor to head up this most important task for the last 12 months. We are so grateful for the outstanding job that Lisa, Ashley and Dawn do for the United Way of the Kearney Area. They put in countless hours, and work with dozens or more volunteers
but they always have a smile on their faces for us.
men and women who are dedicated to this cause and give so freely of their time and talent. From the individuals who deliver campaign packets, make calls, and helped with presentations, to the businesses who allowed us to have breakfasts, jersey auctions, duck races, and dining outs, we salute you.
their employees and give them the opportunity to contribute to this important campaign. We are amazed that many people who have benefited from United Way in the past, are leaders in the area of giving or volunteering. They truly know from first-hand experience how vital these agencies are in improving the quality of life in our communities. We can only hope that the number of these selfless individuals and businesses continues to increase, as their support is critical to our success.
And what binds us all together are the 23 partner agencies supported by our local United Way. They continue to provide services for individuals in need, and the need for those services keep growing. They provide this help in
spite of the fact that allocations are trimmed, and the competition for grants and new dollars is fierce. We are so proud of the work these agencies do, and we are confident that the needs in our building blocks of Education, Income and Health will continue to be met. We are pleased to know that the agencies supported by UWKA continue to fulfill the critical needs of those persons who struggle to meet basic human needs. We see those people improving their lives and
the lives of their family by learning new skills from those agencies. In conclusion, we have received far more blessings than the time we gave during this campaign. We have met so many wonderful people who truly and simply care for the cause, and only want everyone in our
communities to have the same opportunity to better themselves. We feel strongly that UWKA is crucial to the well-being of the communities it serves and it is our commitment to assist them in this work. Thank you for giving us this opportunity and we wish continued success for
