COURSE AIMS

To enhance existing knowledge of Chinese in order that students can express themselves effectively ina wide variety of situations

• To enable students to communicate writing using complex sentence structures• To apply and extend grammatical structures to communicate effectively both orally and in

writing• To understand and respond effectively to authentic spoken discourse

• Present information orally in Modern Standard Chinese• Engage in spontaneous conversation in colloquial Chinese with peers and native speakers

SYLLABUS

Grammar: adjectives, adverbs, co-verbs, comparative, conjunctions of reason and cause, and emphaticstructures

Topics: advanced descriptions of events in the past and in the future, basic argumentation, expression of opinions, application forms for practical purposes (such as library cards and bus tickets), television, Chinese history and literature, calligraphy and architecture, geography, economy

Character recognition: learning to read characters without the assistance of pinyin (English spelling)

Text required for use in class and self-study is: New Practical Chinese Reader Textbook 2 published byBeijing Language and Culture University Press. Students would also find a good-quality Chinese-English dictionary useful, e.g. Collins Dictionary and Chinese in Action. The lecturer will provide additional written and listening materials in class as well as making use of televised and web material. Listening practice is available on Vision.
