The International Union of Microbiological Societies, the American Society for Microbiology, andthe Organizing Committee of the Congress extend to microbiologists and other interested scientistsaround the world a cordial invitation to attend and participate in the upcoming XIII InternationalCongress of Microbiology, 8-13 August 1982. The center of Congress activities will be the John B.Hynes Veterans Auditorium in the Prudential Center, Boston. You are urged to act immediately toobtain further information. Either call the Secretary General of the Congress, at (202) 833-9680, torequest additional information, or write to the address below.

Plenary Lecture:Tumor viruses as amalgams of viral and cellular information. David Baltimore

Scientific Programs:Over 700 contributed papers, 98 formal symposia and round tables, among four distinct programs:Interdivisional, Bacteriology, Mycology, VirologySelected symposia include:* Expression of plasmid genes* Membrane transport of bacterial toxins* Mycological research as we approach the

year 2000* Genetic control of DNA replication of phage

and their hosts* The lysogenic decision* Beta-lactamases and the development of

beta-lactam antibiotics* Membrane energetics and transport in

eucaryotic microorganisms* Molecular basis of dimorphism* Envelope phages as membrane models* Current status of studies on C, compound

metabolism* Opportunistic infections in the compromised

host

* New strategies in the control of Neisseriainfections

* Enzyme regulation in fungi* DNA packaging in vitro and in vivo* Changing patterns of nosocomial infections* Microbial fossils and traces of evolutionary

changes* Computers and microcomputers in

microbiology* Fundamental and applied aspects of ethanol

production by yeasts and other microorganisms* Cell wall macromolecules and host responses* Structure-bound enzymes* Fungal viruses and plasmids* Molecular evidence of phylogenetic relation-

ships and procaryotic evolution* Electroimmunochemical approaches to

antigenic analyses of microorganisms

Social Program:Enjoy events such as the opening reception, symphony concert, and ballet in one of America's mosthistoric cities; meet old friends and make new ones at this most international of meetings.
