Mount Dora Mini Tour and Car Show

By Karen Krawchuk

On Sunday, August 10th,some members of the TinLizzie Club decided tospend a few hours inscenic Mount Dora.Although the originalplans to meet up with theModel T documentaryfolks were postponed, wedecided to go on with ourplans.

For some members, theday began EARLY. Chuckand Gloria Ufkes, Harrieand Suzi Burdan, JimmieLoux, and Patty andSteve Ellis arrived at ourhouse in Clermont by

7:30 AM. With trailersparked and carsunloaded, we had time tohave coffee, muffins, bagels and a bit ofconversation. From

there, it was off tobreakfast (I'm notkidding)!

Believe it or not, wetook the most directroute (a bit odd forModel T-ing) to theHighland Street Cafe inMount Dora, arrivingaround 8:50 am. Our 17mile drive over wasbeautiful, taking theback roads throughAstatula and Lake Jem.My parents, Martha andJim joined us for theday, and at the cafe wemet up with John Farrand Bob Molinary.

Our second breakfastwas delightful. Althoughthe cafe was small, theladies there did awonderful job, we hadquick service and thefood was great. Outsidethe cafe, we took theopportunity to get a fewpictures of the cars. Thepictures are in front ofNapa, since we parkedin their parking lot, next

to the diner. Too bad theyweren't open on Sunday.I'm sure at least one ofus would have gone in tobuy something. Wenever have enough oil orshop towelsJ

On to our destination,The Lakeside Inn. Wearrived at this historichotel around 10 AM. Thecars parked in a semicircle in the grassy area, with the lake as abackdrop. The sceneattracted peopleimmediately, who love tolook and ask questionsabout the cars.

With a date

Page 5: of North Central Florida - Tin Lizzie Club of North ... · of North Central Florida September, 2014 TLC Logo August Cruise in at The Villages b Summer rain clouds definitely kept

At the Lakeside inn, wewere joined by HowardHolmes and PhyllisNovack, Bill and PeggyHayes and Ben and AnnWasman. It was so niceto see so many memberstogether outside ofPerkins! While somemembers set up chairsto hang out by the cars, others decided to walkoff a breakfast or two,and take in the sights ofMount Dora. We walked,we talked, shopped, andsomeone even had icecreamJ

At noon time we hadreservations for lunch. The Lakeside Inn had atable set up for us in aquaint room with a wallof windows, which madethe room bright andinviting.

While enjoying lunchand conversation, a bitof rain and wind blewin. After lunch, weprepared the cars fordeparture, wiping offthe seats and grabbingour rain gear, we wereon our way. Luckily, therain did not last, and onthe way back toClermont, we were ableto get some nicepictures on the top ofSugarloaf Mountain, with Lake Apopka as abackdrop.

Once back to ourhouse, the cars weresecured on the trailers, and our day togetherwas about over. Wetook a few shortminutes to introducesome of our pets toeveryone, a chameleonand two sulcatatortoises. Ourchameleon enjoyseating grasshoppers, and it is amazing to

watch eat. With thatbeing said, it was fun tosee some of the clubmembers trying to catchgrasshoppers in theyard. That would havebeen a great picture(even better video), butwe were all too busysearching the grass forbugs. Everyone enjoyedlearning a bit about ourreptiles before they wereon their way back toOcala. Now that I thinkabout it, our pets wouldfit right into our group, they love to eat tooJ

What a great time wehad! Hopefully we canget together again soonto "ride around and eatstuff!”

The best darn bait

Getting Some Heads Together:

Original Ford, “Z” and Prus

This is meant as a visual compari-son of T heads: original Ford Iron,"Z" and Prus.

As you know, some cars were hav-ing trouble with the grades at the2014 MTFCI Annual Tour in Boone,NC.  Kevin Prus thoughtfullybrought some of his high compres-sion heads along, just in case.  Anice guy (first time tourer) with ayoung family was experiencing thehill climbing problem withtheir rather heavy Depot Hack andimmediately tried the Prus head. With a lots of offers of help, it wasdone quickly in the parking lot ofthe motel!   Thereafter he was allsmiles, and able to get up thegrades. With this example set, we installedone on a local member's '26Coupe that was also struggling onthe hills.  After installation, wedrove it to the top grade on RT321, leaving the motel headingsouth, in high gear!

I thought others might appreciatea visual comparison.  I am notendorsing one head over the oth-er.  There are pros and cons ofeach.  I appreciate that they areoffered for our use and we haveoptions!  We are very fortunate tohave all the vendors that supportus!

I pulled into the crowded parking lot atthe local shopping center and rolleddown the car windows to make suremy Labrador Retriever pup had freshair.

She was stretched full-out on the backseatand I wanted to impress upon her thatshe must remain there.I walked to the curb backward, pointing my finger at the car andsaying emphatically,

"Now you stay. Do you hear me?"

"Stay! Stay!"

The driver of a nearby car, a prettyyoung blonde, gave me a strange lookand said, (this is going to hurt readon)

"Why don't you just put it in 'Park'?"

YOU DON'T HAVE TO BE A "DOG PERSON" TOTRULY APPRECIATE THIS STORY

On Saturday, August 2, a newMarathon gas station on Route 466acelebrated its grand opening. Therewere 18 car clubs represented, plus aminiature tank. I’d estimate at least100 cars were there.

John Clark, from Ashland Kentucky,is owner of the new Clark’s Pump-n-Shop. He already has opened 53service stations and may beopening more in the area.

This is the first Service stationSouth of Route 466a to service thegrowing population in this area ofThe Villages. It is golf cartaccessible.

John andKathyTelesca,HowardHolmes andPhyllisNovack, DonDeWolfe,JackPetermanand I joinedin thefestivities.John and

Howard set up chairs by the gaspumps so we had a nice shady spotto enjoy.

There was a ribbon cuttingceremony, free hot dogs and

hamburgers, grilled on a specialgrille made from the grille, fendersand hood of an old car.
