Forgiveness. Forgiveness is much on my mind for some reason. Probably it began a few months ago when I received an email from an old, old friend—inviting me to her high school reunion. She graduated a year after me, but she and her class-mates were inviting those one year ahead and one year be-hind to join in. That probably stirred up all sorts of memories, good mostly, a few not so good. Then the annual notification of my college homecoming date with all its attendant (nostalgic) activities. Embedded in all that somewhere, among the detritus of growing up, must have been some unfinished business. Then, in one of those mysterious manifestations of the unconscious mind, a connection was made with a book I fin-ished only last night. A current best seller, it is the story of an Olympic runner who was swept up in the turmoil of the Second World War, spent most of the war as a prisoner of war in Japan, survived, and then had to come to terms with all he had experi-enced. Extraordinarily well written, as well as meticulously re-searched, Unbroken: A World War II Story of Survival, Resil-ience, and Redemption is a study of forgiveness—forgiveness of self as well as others.

Louis Zamperini was a hard case, bullied himself for a time, he became a real bully and delinquent in his childhood and adolescence, a person who later carried much guilt, and with good reason. A loving family, good people placed in his life, and competitive running saw him through. Until the War. This young Air Corps officer saw and suffered unimaginable sav-agery. That he survived at all was a real miracle. Too many of his friends, the great majority of them, did not. Because he was a world famous athlete he was singled out for especially brutal treatment by a beast of a man. One so infamous that he later was listed as one of the top forty most wanted war criminals in post-war Japan. Understandably, Zamperini was obsessed with revenge. After his liberation it nearly killed him.

It was his dramatic conversion experience, one that has

Page 2 THE VOICE, July 2011

Given him a new life. A significant part of that new life, in fact the focus of it to this day

(he is well and active in his nineties) is Christian forgiveness. His life is a fine example of

how the teaching and life of Jesus Christ can be translated into specific action in hu-

man interaction. Christ taught us to forgive as he forgave us—without precondition,

without waiting for apologies or amends. Zamperini sought out his tormentor in order to

tell him all was forgiven, but the man would not meet him, would not admit he had

wronged anyone. But he was forgiven nonetheless. Forgiven as Christ taught us, as

Christ forgave his murderers from the cross.

Revenge, even resentment, is too heavy a load for us to bear without dire conse-

quences. If we are indeed victims of another’s wrongdoing, and who isn’t at some

time in their life, clinging to the desire for vengeance makes us twice a victim. It is too

much for us, and as an older liturgy said so well, “….health is not in us.”

This long teaching season of Pentecost we are now entering will be one in which

the theme of forgiveness will be featured throughout. Forgiveness is after all why God

became incarnate in Jesus his Son in the first place. In the Heavenly realm there is no

human scale of justice; misdeed on one and punishment on the other, there is only the

scale of love; forgiveness on the one side, and spiritual freedom on the other. Set your-

self free: pray always for charity toward others, for forgiveness for all, for yourself and for

those you have hurt.

is Thursday, August 18th from 9 a.m. until noon, The second day, for all

you young working people and anyone else, is Saturday, August 20th

Care Ministry

Spotlights

Care Ministry Visitors On the Job!

For the last several months, Care Ministry volunteers have been visiting shut-ins. Singly or in pairs, these folks visit those among our parish family who are lonely, unable to get to church, or for any other reason need a special parish friend. Many of these pairings were strangers when this program started; now rich and supportive friendships have developed.

What happens during a visit? Some visits are quiet

conversations, where listening is more important than

talking. In other cases visitors and parish members share

crafts or go to lunch. In between personal visits,

volunteers sometimes keep in touch by phone.

In May Tom Deyerle and Jim Vint traveled up – Up - UP

the mountain to visit Joanne and Keg Wheeler to help

Keg celebrate his 90th birthday. They brought the party

with them, providing cupcakes and a birthday present –

a book about the Marines.

Paula Campbell visits Denise Parks. Paula is usually accompanied by a much-loved and experienced visitor, her tiny Yorkie, Sophia. Sophia has been blind since birth, but that doesn’t slow her down. Denise chats with the Yorkie in

French and feeds her kibble.

A dozen more parish members are visitors. If you know of someone who would like to be visited OR someone who would like to be a visitor, let the clergy or me know.

Important reminder for all visitors! Mark your calendars for our visitor

check-in meeting in the Parish Hall between services at 10:00 am on Sunday, July 10th. Deacon Joyce and I will be there to hear your insights, suggestions, and needs. Please don’t miss this important meeting.

A huge Care Ministry thank you goes to Judy Petersen for sewing tarnish-resistant bags for reception serving silver. Judy’s most recent project was an extra-large bag for our new tiered server. These bags make our job easier and extend the useful lives of our sterling

and plate.

THANK YOU for your wonderful support and help.

Annual Family Swim and Cookout

Mark your calendars! July 24th at the Gordon’s beach on Lake Summit, from 3:30 to 6:30pm,

weather permitting, we will have our swim and cookout party. Please RSVP by July 17th.

Bring a life jacket for little ones swimming and a lazy pontoon cruise. We would welcome

two or three watermelons and some brownies or cookies. The rest will be provided: Beverages,

hotdogs with the trimmings and the promise of a good time.

It takes some planning, time and energy to put this together so do let us know if you plan to

attend and if so, how many will be in your party. If your child would like to bring a friend, that

would be fine. You can email us or use the sign up sheet in the Sunday school building to let us

know. We look forward to a fun afternoon.

Vacation’s Over

Sunday, July 17th, we will resume our Sunday school classes. The pre-school will be with Jennifer Shelton and the older group will be with Big R. Let us know what grade your child will be going into in the fall as we hope to be able to divide the middle group into two groups. This has been a long time goal and with your help it will take place. We will need vol-

unteers to help make this happen.

A Big Weekend in August

You will be hearing more and more about it, but begin planning now to bring the entire fam-ily to the 175th Birthday Party for St. John in the Wilderness. What a nice memory for our youngsters to share with their children in the future generation by saying, “I was at the 175th anniversary celebration of my parish church at St. John in the Wilderness!” Some might be able to say this at the 200th celebration of the life of St. John in the Wilderness. Who knows they might be saying that to their children and grandchildren. The 175th Celebration is

planned for the weekend of August 27th and 28th.

In the Meantime…….

We are busily planning a new year for our Christian Education Program. Upcoming events are our Ice Cream Social and Registration, Halloween, Thanksgiving, and most important Advent and Christmas. Meanwhile, Father Alex and Miss Sandy are in the early stages of planning the Christmas Pageant! Not a day too soon since we call on many to volunteer time

and talent during this busy time of year. We look forward to all these special events.

Due to the 175th Celebration we will not have our registration in August as in years past. The

tentative date for registration is September 11th. There will be more about that later.

Please be thinking about improvements for our program as it grows and how you can share

your time and talents with us. It really takes all of us working together to make it all happen.

Welcome!

Please stop by the nursery and welcome our new Nursery Worker, Sufia Ikbal. She and TaSheena Vinson are new on the scene for a most important ministry of welcoming and caring for the youngest members of our program in the Nursery. We are so pleased to

have them with us!

Blessings! Father Alex and Miss Sandy

THE PHOTOGRAPHERS ARE COMING!

Who are the photographers? Fellow members of St. John and the Pictorial Directory Committee will

be the photographers for the 2011 Pictorial Directory. Photographs will be taken outside, between

services, somewhere in the vicinity of the church, depending on weather and sunlight conditions.

So, put these dates on your calendar, gather the children and join us in this adventure of producing a

directory for the parish. You don’t have to worry about scheduling appointment time, dressing just

so, or spending time deciding on portraits to purchase.

In preparation for the address portion of the directory, forms will be available at the church entrance

to update the parish records. We do need volunteers to assist the photographer with information

needed.

The directory, when completed, will be published locally. There will be a charge of $12-$15 for the

printed color directory, which is spiral bound.

Plans are being made to have photography dates of July 10, 17 and 24. If you are un-available on

one of these dates, please contact Marti Smith (606-0117) or email her at: [email protected]
