Mr. T. P. CorothersAn interesting account of an incident in the early history ofCincinnati. There lived in Campbell county, Ky., for manyyears a rather remarkable man named John Cline. He was aman of wealth and had been born and reared in Cincinnati. He was of Hessian ancestry, and his grandfather was a Hessiansoldier who had deserted and then joined the Revolutionaryarmy, so Mr. Cline stated. When he was a child LaFayettecame to Cincinnati. There was a market woman whom heknew that took him up in her wagon to view the procession.Just as the carriage of LaFayette came abreast of her wagon, she called something, and LaFayette stopped the carriage, sprang from it and ran to her, kissed her, and spoke inexcited tones words that the boy was told later were inFrench.

Mr.Cline stated that this woman was the daughter of thewoman who had contributed so much to saving LaFayette'slife when he was imprisoned at Olmutz. The market womanwas that night the principal guest of interest at the receptionto LaFayette.

The Western Monthly Review, Vol. 3, pp. 440-447, ed.by Timothy Flint, has an article upon the painting byOguest Jean J. Hervieu of General Lafayette's Landing andReception at Cincinnati, 1825. In this article the incidentabove is referred to with slight variation as it states that itwas the mother—not the daughter—who was present in themultitude, and was recognized by La Fayette. Furtherstates that the German woman's eagerness was made con-spicuous in the painting by the artist, who presented her inher German costume. See also, Greve's Cent. Hist, ofCincinnati, Vol. 1, p. 580.

As one of the Board of Judges in the Departmentof Manufacture, she had an excellent opportunity to collectthe contents of this volume.
