Bulletin Due Dates! If you have an event(s) you would like to publicize in an April bulletin please summit your information by the due dates listed below. This earlier deadline is due to the printer's holiday schedule. Please submit all articles by 8:00 am on the due date.

• April 28th Bulletin information is due Friday, April 19th

Cutout and keep in your bible for reference!

Readings for the Week of April 14thSee bulletin pages 5-7 for the daily readings!

Spend 15 minutes every day in prayer with Scripture!

• We say the Creed during Mass, at least every Sunday. But what is my witness to this creed? If someone were to ask me what I believe, how would I sum it up, like St. Paul? What would the Holy Spirit speak through me?

• Place yourself in this gospel scene with Mary Magdalene, St. Peter and the beloved disciple. What do you feel when Mary says that Jesus’ body is missing? We take for granted the fact of the resurrection, but we ought to be looking this fervently for Jesus even today. How do I run after the Lord? Am I timid and afraid, or am I reckless?

Bring Your Bells! Please bring your bells from home on the night of Holy Thursday to accompany the Choir and congregation during the singing of the Gloria. The Gloria (for the most part) is eliminated from our Masses during Lent and we welcome it back with joy and excitement - and bells - during the Gloria on Holy Thursday. Our bells are then immediately silenced and brought back the night of Easter Vigil.

Gospel Meditation

Palm Sunday is a strange day in our liturgical calendar. We begin by waving palms, but somewhere in the middle, we call for Jesus to be crucified. We celebrate today an equally paradoxical God, one who comes to save through suffering.

"I tell you, if they keep silent, the stones will cry out!" Jesus, who so often in the Gospels tries to hide his true identity, speaks thunderously to the Pharisees who would still the rejoicing crowd. At the Last Supper, Jesus confirms the Messianic promise to his disciples, saying "I confer a kingdom on you, just as my Father has conferred one on me." Yet, before the night is over, Jesus has been betrayed.

We hear the tragedy unfold in Luke's Passion narrative. Jesus is abused by the council of elders, denied by Peter, whipped by Roman soldiers, and condemned to death by Pilate. But what else do we see? Jesus heals someone who came to arrest him, forgives his torturers, promises a repentant man paradise, and - by his loving endurance - converts a centurion at the foot of the cross. Jesus is both Redeemer of the World and Suffering Servant. In taking on the mantle of Messiah, Jesus does not only receive our praise and our accolades, but he bears our burdens and sins and does so with the deepest love. He may go about our salvation in a paradoxical way, but he is dearer to our own suffering hearts for it. This week, we remember that no sorrow of our own is beyond the reach of the compassion of God.

Reflection

Hosanna to the Messiah!

While Jesus would not be crowned an earthly king, Jesus' entrance into Jerusalem has many parallels to the Messianic expectations of the Hebrew people. Before entering, Jesus requisitions a donkey from its owner. In the ancient world, kings had this right. Yet the animal that Jesus requests is rare – a colt upon which no one else has sat yet. Yet, it's a donkey. This is no great war-charger, no magnificent animal. Jesus acts with all the authority of an earthly king, yet his kingdom is one of simplicity and peace. As the disciples throw cloaks over the donkey, the crowd spreads theirs on the road. This ancient gesture dates back to the line of kings descended from David. Not only are these physical kingly gestures, but the crowd of followers cries out in jubilation and praise. The Messiah has come to Jerusalem!

HOLY WEEK 2019

Palm Sunday of the Lord’s PassionApril 14th

What meaning, what sense, does this Sunday have? The meaning, the sense, lies in its very name: Palm/Passion Sunday. In this context, Passion and palms are not a contradiction: sorrow along with joy, thorns versus palms, tragedy in conflict with triumph. Passion and palms are not enemies; they make a single mystery. ~ Palm Sunday suggests what Good Friday will trumpet to the far ends of the earth: Our King triumphs not simply on Easter, He triumphs on Calvary. The tragedy is triumph; the sadness is gladness (Walter Burghardt.)

Monday of Holy Week April 15th

Lent is no more a preparation for the resurrection of Jesus than Advent was a preparation for the birth of Jesus. Jesus has risen, once and for all, and we dare not pretend that He has not. ~ Just as Lent is not 40 days of mourning while we wait for Christ to burst the linen bands of His burial, so our life on earth is not a vale of tears while we wait for the final resurrection to wipe them away. In your dying is your living; in your dying is your rising (Walter Burghardt.)

PARISH NEWS & EVENTS

Wednesday of Holy Week April 17th

Six weeks ago, on Ash Wednesday, the season of Lent began. We were signed with ashes as a sign of our willingness to open ourselves to Christ’s redemptive power in our lives. Although today is the last full day of Lent, Lent does not end until start of Holy Thursday Mass. Like Jesus, we prepare to surrender our lives to the Father. (This is the last day for the 6:30 am Mass).

Tuesday of Holy WeekApril 16th

All are invited to attend the Chrism Mass at 7:30 pm at the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist, 812 North Jackson Street, Milwaukee. It is at this Mass that the holy oils we use throughout the year are blessed or consecrated.

Holy ThursdayApril 18th

Rice bowls /other Lenten alms will be collected as part of our liturgy this evening. There will be Adoration following the Holy Thursday service in the chapel until midnight.

For Christians, every year has its origins and climax at a time determined by the earth and the sun and the moon and the human-made cycle of a seven-day week. The marvelous plan of earth’s placement and the sun’s placement, of axis and of orbit make a cycle within human cycles so that days can be named and remembered and rhythms established. First, we wait for the angle of the earth’s axis to make day and night equal (spring equinox). Then we wait for the moon to be full.

When these cosmic movements occur, then the Church gathers for the Passover of the Lord. Only then do we dare to wash one another’s feet and reverence the tree of life. We immerse ourselves in the darkness, in the stories, and in the death-defying waters of baptism. In the midst of our busy lives, we are reminded of our origins and our destiny. Such confrontations can be most inconvenient – but birth and death are rarely convenient. Keenly aware of our dependence upon God, we humbly surrender to the mystery.

PARISH NEWS & EVENTS

Good FridayApril 19th

Behold, the wood of the cross on which is hung our salvation. O come, let us adore. We gather quietly on Friday and listen to scripture, including the passion from the gospel of John. We pray at length for all the world’s needs. Then the holy cross is held up in our midst, and we come forward one by one to do reverence with a kiss or a bow or a genuflection. All the while we sing, not only of sorrow, but of the glory of the cross. We continue in fasting, prayer and vigil, in rest and quiet through Saturday (Liturgy Training Publications). ~ Friday is a day of fasting for those between the ages of 18 and 59 and abstinence from meat for ages of 14 through 59. ~ The annual collection for the shrines and the people of the Holy Land is taken up at the afternoon service.

Holy Saturday April 20th

Rejoice, let Mother Church also rejoice, arrayed with the lightning of his glory, let this holy building shake with joy, filled with the mighty voices of the peoples. The liturgy this evening is “the heart that pumps lifeblood” into the Church. Even when there are no new members to baptize, the Church needs to be together on this holiest of nights. In the midst of war, illness, broken relationships and death, we need to remind ourselves – and the world – that Christ, the Light in our darkness, has triumphed. Because of Christ, we dare to sing “Alleluia!” Participation in the Easter Vigil liturgy fulfills your Sunday Mass obligation.

Easter Sunday April 21st

Alleluia! Alleluia! A Lamb the sheep redeems; Christ, who only is sinless, reconciles sinners to the Father. Death and life have contended in that combat stupendous. The Prince of life, who died, reigns immortal. Alleluia! Alleluia!

Daily reflection books will again be available to encourage and support your daily prayer during the 50 days of Easter.

Antiphons Highlighting the

Lenten and Easter SeasonsThroughout the Lenten season we have

been singing the Antiphons and will continue through the Easter season

which ends in June. The Antiphons (of The Roman Missal) are short, memorable scripture texts for singing during the processions of Mass (e.g. Entrance and

Communion). They reflect the Sunday readings, the feast being celebrated,

a truth of salvation or an aspect of God's love. Repeating them in accessible,

memorable melodies can help us recall the truths of God's Word throughout the day and week. The use of Entrance and Communion antiphons is being encouraged, but not strictly prescribed. Our hope is the antiphons used during Mass will help to enrich your worship time with the Lord.

ST. VINCENT de PAUL SOCIETY

FOOD PANTRY NEEDS: powdered sugar, mustard, Saltines, instant rice and egg noodles.

As we reflect on our Lord's passion this Palm Sunday, let us consider those among us who live with less and cry out to not be forsaken. Do you have the means to lift a brother or sister from their suffering? Do you have the heart to pray for those who need help? Please join the members of the St. Vincent de Paul Society in providing aid and prayers for the needy in our community. Envelopes for your financial donations are located at the SVdP collection boxes in the narthex and next to the hall sign-up shelf. If your donation is intended for the food pantry, please indicate that on the envelope or memo portion of your check. Donations for the K of C 40 Non-Perishables for Lent food drive may be placed in the SE corner of the narthex any time the church is open. Your kindness will help us provide items needed for our patrons' Easter meals.

The SVdP Collection Truck will be at St. Charles the weekend of May 4th and 5th. This is the weekend to gather items you no longer want or need, or give up sacrificially, to be sold in the SVdP retail stores to fund the many outreach programs SVdP offers to the poor and needy in Waukesha County. The Spring collection will be our only truck collection for 2019.

If you are in need of food, the pantry is located at 229 Lawn Street, Hartland, and is open Tuesdays between 10 am and noon. It is also open on the second and fourth Tuesday evening of each month between 5:30 pm and 7 pm. If you require other assistance, please contact SVdP at 262-367-0800. We may also be reached at that number if you would like information about joining our ministry.

You are cordially invited to
