NOTES FROM THE LONDON COMPANIES.-" A parade was held at Millbank Barracks on December 15, to present medals for Long Service and Good Conduct to No. 10,385, Serjeant F. Howe, and to No. 10,235, Private C. R. Collar. LieutenantColonel Maher, Commanding No. 35 Company, R.A.M.C., on presenting the medals, remarked that this duty afforded him an equally great pleasure as it did the recipients, and in addressing the parade gave some very encouraging words to the young soldiers. He expressed a wish that it would be their ambition to endeavour to gain this very distinctive decoration, which not only marks the career of a good soldier, but is also of great advantage to him on leaving the Service.

"Christmas was celebrated in the usu",l time-honoured fashion. The Company Dinner was a great success and was served in the dining hall, which had been beautifully decorated by the corporals and men for the occasion. About seventy of the Company were present, a sumptuous meal of seasonable fare being provided. During the dinner they were honoured by a visit from the Commanding Officer, LieutenantColonel Maher, the Company Officer, Captain MacDowall, Major Brake, Quartermaster, the Matron, Miss Martin, and Sisters of the Q.A.I.M.N.S. Season's greetings were heartily tendered and duly responded to. After dinner a convivial gathering assem bled and an impromptu concert took place, which the Company talent enabled to run well on into the evening.

" The married families of 18 and 35 Companies were entertained by the officers and their wives on December 27, at a tea, which was held in the dining hall. After tea the company adjourned to. the .recreation room, where a Christmas tree, beautifully decorated and arranged by Mrs. Skinner, Mrs. Maher, Mrs. Gibbard, and other ladies, was stripped and the presents distributed to the great delight of the children. A Punch and Judy Show followed, and judging by the roars of laughter, was greatly enjoyed by all. On leaving, each child received sweets and oranges, and a happy evening was brought to a close.

"The patients in the Queen Alexandra Military Hospital enjoyed good Christmas fare, everything being thoughtfully provided for their comfort and welfare by the matron and nursing staff. The master cook and kitchen staff spared no pains to make the d<ty a great success, and the wards were beautifully decorated in honour of the occasion, to enable the sick as far as possible, to have as good a time as their comrades, both in barracks and outside.

" An excellent concert was arranged for them by Major Gregson, Grenadier Guards

Both concerts were a great success, and left nothing to be desired, being thoroughly enjoyed by both patients and visitors.

"On January 6, 1913, a Social Evening was given by the Serjeants at the Serjeants' Mess, Millbank. An excellent programme was arranged by Serjeant E. Gray and the Committee, and afforded an audience of over one hundred a most amusing and en· joyable !evening, the function being honoured by the presence of Colonel and Mrs. B. IM. Skinner, Lieutenant·Colonel J. Maher, Major F. S. Irvine, Major Horton, Captain O'Carroll, the Matron, and the Nursing Sisters.

' The Last Watch' was admirably rendered by Mr. Hewett in his fine tenor voice, and , Take a Pair of Sparkling Eyes' left nothing to be desired. Mr. Harrison's imitations of well-known artistes were exceptionally good, and the 'cello solo of Serjeant Heggie, R.A.M.C., was received with hearty applause. Mr. Victor King and Mr. Bob Combie caused roars of laughter, numerous encores being demanded before either was allowed to leave the stage. Mr. Oberst sang his songs with great refinement, and his rich baritone voice was much admired by the audience. Miss Nella Ray, a charming young artiste of 12 years, deserves the highest praise for the effective manner in which she rendered her catchy songs and dances, and the violin solos of the Brothers Bousher and Mr. Taylor were beautifully executed and greatly appreciated.

"Captain O'Carroll, R.A.M.C., who is always a great success, was especially good at the piano, while his song, • Are you coming out? ' was rendered in excellent style, and it was much regretted by all that he was compelled to leave so early in the evening. A vote of thanks was accorded to the artistes, the committee, and to Serjeant.Major R. Cox, and a most brilliant and enjoyable evening was brought to a close."

NOTES FROM CONNAUGHT HOSPITAL, ALDERSHOT.-Serjeant Sharp writes (January 19, 1913) :-

.. Ohristmas Festivities.-Th,e members of No. 2 Company, R.A.M.C., who had to remain in camp during the Christmas holidays, decorated their barrack rooms in 'E ' Block, Tournay Barracks. "At 7.30 p.m., the Company assembled in a tastefully decorated room in barracks set aside for the purpose. The chair was taken by Serjeant.Major Hughes. Oaptain Wallace, Our genial Company Officer, honoured the Company with his presence. Serjeant·Major Filmer and the majority of the senior N.O.O.'s were also present.

Some excellent songs were rendered by the members of the Oompany during the .ev:ening, and a most convivial and enjoyable evening was spent. Captain Wallace in replyirigto a toast for the officers, in a few well.chosen words gave some excellent advice·to the' young soldiers. Serjeant-Major Filmer later in the evening in reply to a toast to our warrant officers and senior N.C.O.'s also gave some very good advice .to those. present on the subject of educational certificates and promotion. Serjeant Morman and 'his committee were thanked during the evening for the well· arranged programme and the catering, which was all that could be desired. The coucert t.erminated about midnight, and the Company retired to rest after a .most eujoyable day." .

"It could have been no hardship to be a patient in the Connaught Hospital on Ohristmas Day, and if any of the inmates regretted their absence from the ba·rrack room festivities, then most certainly it was no fault of the officers, matron, sisters and staff nurses, or of Serjeant-Major Filmer, of the R.A.M.O. All worked with a will for the enjoyment of their charges, which began on the 24th, when a Ohristmas party, a Christmas tree,'and Punch and Judy show furnished fun and pleasure for the married families. Practically all the patients in hospital were convalescent, only one was ill enough to call for anxiety on the part of the nursing' staff. Most of the inmates dined in a ward set aside for the purpose, which wasornamented for the occasion; but in order that those who could not lea,ve their beds should not lose the seasonable aspect, each ward was'nicely decorated by the sisters, staff nurses, and orderlies. In only one ward was the decoration carried out by others than the nursing staff; and that was No. 2, which had been handed over to the Oompany for ·their annual' At Home "on the 27th inst. Nothing was left undone' for bhe enjoyment of everyone present, and I am ,sure that all who were present spent a most enjoyable evening.

" On December 26, the members of the Serjeants' Mess held an ' At Home' for the children of No. 2 Oompany; each child being entitled to invite one l'riend. Tea was .provided, and after everyone had done ample justice to the good things, the room was cleared, and the programme commenced. Suitable toys were provided for the children, and Serjeant Robertson, who again came to the front as 'Santa Claus' was the hit of the evening. One of the most interesting events was a game by the 'grownups' of 'puff ball,' which consisted of a sheet and a penny balloon, causing much merriment; also the game of 'chairs' keep moving. The matron, sisters and staff nurses took part in the whole of the games. Songs Were sung and pianoforte accompaniments were rendered by the different children present. Arrangements for this were carried out by Quartermaster-Serjeant Merchant, who acted as President, assisted by an able committee in Serjeants Fish and Azeal.

" On the last day of the old year the whole of the members of the Serjeants' Mess were the guests of the Depot Mess to an ' At Home,' which was held in the Training School. Nothing had been forgotten for the comfort of tbose attending the' At Home.' Our thanks are due to the Depot Mess for a most enjoyable and well-spent evening.

"January 2, 1913, brought to a close our Christmas festivities, when the members of the Serjeants' Mess, No. 2 Company, RA.M.C.; were' At Home' to the members of the Serjeants' Mess, R.A.M.C., Stanhope Lines. This was held in No. 2 Ward of the Oonnaught Hospital. This spacious ward was decorated with flags, greenery, &c., which was arranged in loops across the ceiling and around the walls, interspersed with good wishes to. the officers and visitors. At the end of the room was arranged·a buffet which was set as a refreshment bar for all who cared to partake of the members' hospitality. At the other end of the room was arranged a ladies' buffet, where tea, coffee, ices, and refreshments were served throughout the evening. Every detail.had been gone into and arranged for the comfort of a very large number of guests. Among those present were the officers and their ladies, matron, and nursing staff, Connallght. Hospital. A special feature of the evening was the rendering of some delightful Scotch melodies on the bagpipes by Captain Ootterill, R.A.M.C., commanding' 0' Oompany, Depot RA.M.O., who was accompanied by a drummer of the 1st Battalion, L. N. Lancashire Regiment. The evening terminated by the whole company joining hl1nds and singing' Auld Lang Syne' to the accompaniment of the pipes by Oaptain Ootterill. It was regretted that owing to a previous engagement our Oommanding Officer (Lieutenant-Oolonel W. Turner), together with Mrs. Turner, could not be present. .

I The toys were presented by Mr. Turner.

" NOTES FROM DOYER.-Oaptain W. Wiley writes ;-,," Christmas Festivities at Dover.-Ohristmas at the Military Hospital, Dover, has

be!3h kept up this year in right royal style, everything passing off with a swing. The wards were decorated in a most tasteful manner by the nursing sisters, whose friendly rivalry produced some surprising results. The Detachment put all previous efforts in the shade in the beautifying of their somewhat ugly barrack hut, notwithstanding the fact that no flags were obtainable this year. Serjeants Kilyon and Hopwoodand their .r)J.erry mehturned the place into a veritable fairy palace, the stage (Serjeant Hopwood's' speciality). being a work of art. The Oommanding Officer and officers "i'isited ,the wards at, dinner·time on Ohristmas Day and assisted the matron and her 8t~ff, in carVing for the patients, afterwards extending to all a kindly greeting; proceeding to the barrack hilt, Colonel Wilson drank the health and future prosperity of the :Qetachment, regretting the nearness of his approaching departure on his! " The large barrack hut was packed to overcrowding (notwithstanding the stormy night), representatives of all regiments and corps in the garrison attending, also Colonel Wilson and the officers R.A.M.C. doing duty at Dover, the matron and sisters Q.A.I.M.N.S., the wives and children of the detachment were all present. The concert, under the chairmanship of Serjt?ant-Major Smith, was started at 8 p.m. sharp, and the programme, which was arranged by Staff-Serjeant Way, was got through without a hitch, every item being exceedingly well rendered and thoroughly appreciated. Refreshments to suit all tastes were liberally provided, and at half-time, coffee, sandwiches, &c., were passed round and done full justice to, a most enjoyable evening concluding with' God Save the King! ' shortly after 11 p.m.

"On Saturday, December 28, the barrack room was again utilized for> a patients' concert, arranged by the Rev. O. F. Wetherall, and contributed to by a large number of ladies and gentlemen. This was also attended by most of the staff and their wives. An excellent programme had heen provided and was most successfully carried through. Colonel Mercer, Mr. H. Mercer, Mrs. Wiley and others contributing successful items. The band of the Royal Berkshire Regiment supplied the music and Mrs. Wetherall accompanied the songs in a masterly manner. Monday, the 30th, was the children's turn, the attractions of the barrack-room having been added to by the addition of a huge Christmas Tree, which had been beautifully decorated by the Matron and Sisters and Miss Woolley. Tea was served to the married folk and their families at 4.30 p.m., and after this had been done full justice to, games were resorted to and entered into by both big and little, and the big ones seemed to enjoy them, if anything, more than the little ones. Soon after 6 p.m. the tree coverings were drawn aside, disclosing a most benevolent Father Ohristmas (Serjeant Hopwood), who, after ex~ending the compliments of the season to everybody, invited all and sundry to gather round. The distribution of the large number of books, games, toys, &c., took some considerable time, the delighted children each being presented with three articles, besides bags of sweets, oranges, &c. There was also a surprise draw for the wives of the married men for prizes presented by Colonel Wilson; these> were won by Mrs. Haynes, Mrs. Monk, Mrs. Moore, and Mrs. Smith, the> proceedings closing shortly afterwards with three hearty cheers for the Colonel andt4reemore for the matron and other ladies, who, by their kindly help, had done so much to m,ake the

annual gathering such a conspicuous success. The Christmas of 1912 will, I am sure, be long remembered amongst the Detachment as the most enjoyable ever spent in Dover.

NOTES FROM DUBLIN.-Serjeant.Major Packard writes: "The Royal Military Infirmary, which has been for so long a time the chief military hospital in the Dublin Garrison, is now a dying institution, orders being received early in December for the transfer of the patients and staff to King George V. Hospital at Arbour Hill.

"The West block remains equipped with forty beds for tbe treatment of surgical cases and is under the charge of Major A. E. Smithson, R.A.M.C.

"The single N.C.O.'s and men of the corps are quartered in the Royal Barracks as no barrack rooms have yet been provided at the new hospital.

"On Ohristmas day, an excellent dinner was provided for the patients. Dinner was served at 1 p.m. ·and Lientenant-Oolonel W. O. Beevor, accompanied by the Officers and Miss G. E. Larner, Matron Q.A.I.M.N.S., visited the patients in the various wards at their dinner.

" On December 30, the married families were invited to tea and a Christmas tree which was provided by all the officers of the corps in the Garrison. The tree was prettily decorated and loaded with presents, as 130 children ~ad been invited. A feature of the presents was the lovely dolls which had been dressed by the matron and the nursing sisters. Mrs. Julian presented the toys to the children.

"A dance was given on Boxing Night and another on New Yellr's Eve; both were well attended by the married families and friends of the Company. LieutenantColonel W. C. Beevor and other Officers of the Corps attended, and dancing was kept up on each occasion until 3 a.m., and a, very enjoyable time was spent by all present."

NOTES FROM GIBRALTAR.-Serjeant-Major J.Wickersham writes: January 4, , 1913 :-- '

"Ohristmas Festivities.-No doubt it will, be interesting to give a short account of the Christmas festivities at Gibraltar, and I cannot do better than take the hospital first. Christmas Day was ushered in with glorious weather, breakfast, consisting of boiled ham, &c_, being served to the patients at the usual hour. A Church Service was held during the morning at which the old favourite Carols were sung. At 12.45 p.m. a substantial dinner, consisting of roast turkey, an assortment of vegetables, plum puddings, &c., &c., was served in the tastefully decorated dining hall. The patients were entertained to tea by the ladies of Q.A.I.M.N.B., IInd an ,imprompu concert was held in the evening.

"Our D.D.M.S., Colonel,H. H. Johnston, our Officer commanding, LieutenantColonel S. G. AlIen, accompanied by their ladies and the other Officers of the' Corps stationed at Gibraltar, visited the patients at dinner, and after a short speech by Colonel H. H. Johnston, who complimented the patients on their happy appearance, and remarked on the low number of sick, the patients resmned their repast and settled down to enjoy the good things. A tour of the hospital was then made by the officers and ladies, when the tastefully decorated wards were commented upon.

"Christmas festivities were again resumed on the 28th instant, when a tea and concert was provided for the patients which was thoroughly enjoyed by all present. The items in the programme were extremely good from beginning to end; where all is good it is hard to ,discriminate. The programme was arranged by Serjeant and Mrs. Wells, to whom great credit is due. Mention ,should be made of Bombadier HeRderson, R.G.A., for his splendid'Shakespearean, recitation, also his musical monologue; 'The Single Hair;' Our comic turn" Captain Bonner, 1st South Staffordshite Regiment was excellent, and was deservedly encored. "The concert was brought to a close at 7 p.m. after a very enjoyable two hours had been spent, thus bringing our patients' Ohristmas festivities to a close, and I think it will be long remembered by those who were unfortunately laid by the heels at the festive season. as one of the happiest they had spent.

"After the patients' dinner on Christmas Day was served, the N.O.O.'s and men of 28 Oompany sat down in their own well appointed dining hall to dinner at 1.30 p.m., where justice was done to the good things provided by the dining committee.

"Oolonel H. H. Johnston, Lieutenant-Oolonel S. O. Alien, the Officer Oommanding and the remainder of the Officers and ladies visited the Oompany at dinner, whenOolonel H. H. Johnstonmade a short speech complimenting the Oompany on their. efficiency and general behaviour during the past year. Oheers were heartily given for Oolonel H. H. Johnston, Lieutenant-Oolonel Alien, our Oompany Officer, and the ladies. The Officers having drank the health of the Company and departed, an attack was made on the turkeys, &c., one might almost say a combined attack, by the allies. At 7p.m. the Oompany again assembled with the married families for 'a Ooncert, Serjeant-Major Wickersham being in the chair. Unfortunately our Officers could not be present in any numbers having their own Ohristmas festivities, but Lieutenant-Oolonel Allen and Major Lewis looked in for a few minutes during the early part of the evening. The evening's amusement was opened by PrivateOwen, who sang 'Mary' in a very pleasant style. Serjeant Emery's song 'That must last you the rest of the week' caused great amusement. Miss Orew very ably rendered 'The Song that rea.ched my Heart." Then came our 'Hungry-Airy-an Band' under the conductorship of Private Oooper. Favourite selections were given, finishing with the Regimental March. (I might say that this Band is open to receive engagements.) The hit of the evening was Serjeant Emery in his .monologue 'A Lecture on Love.' Roars of laughter were caus.ed by Private Paddisou in his song . Woolloomoolo,' and also in ".Mother's Baby Boy.'

" Unfortunately, it is impossible to comment on all the singers, but all deserve a share of the praise, especially Lance-Oorporal Simmons for the programme. I believe 28 Oompany has always been noted for its talent; at any rate there is a very fair amount here, atpresent.

Gramophone Selections during the evening-Mr. ALLEN. Stage Properties, Costumes, &c., by T. Giles, R.A.M.C.

, " At 11 p.m. the festivities were drawn to a close after a very pleasant evening by the singing of ' God Save The King.'

" On the 27th instant, our Christmas Tea for the children of the Company was held, the fathers and mothers being also invited. Tea was served at 4 p.m., and about sixty sat down, including the officers and their ladies. The youngsters soon made an attack on all the good things provided. Gramophone selections were given during tea by our gate porter, Mr. AlIen.

"After tea was over our funny men appeared on the scene, Private Slough as policeman, Private Cooper as bookmaker, Private Giles as the man with a swelled head, and Lance-Corporal Simmons as a cat, and a very excellent cat he made .

. , This was followed by a magic lantern, some excellent pictures being shown, i.e., , Jack the Giant Killer,' 'Alice in Wonderland,' 'Peter Pan,' &c., &c. Our C.O's. wife, Mrs. AlIen, very kindly explained the pictures to the children, and they were enjoyed thoroughly by old as well as young. An adjournment was made to the ward set apart for the Christmas tree, and great delight was expressed by the' kiddies' at the beautifully lighted tree whose branches were loaded with presents. Father Christmas (Private Knight) then appeared, and a most excellent Father Christmas he made, who, after welcoming all the guests, assisted Mrs. AlIen in distributing the presents to the lucky recipients. As each child received its present, expressions of delight were heard, the articles being useful, and great judgment exercised by our C.O's. wife in the selection. The presents given by His Excellency The Governor and Lady Hunter were also distributed.

" The tree having been stripped, three cheers for His Excellency The Governor and Lady Hunter was proposed by Lieutenant-Colonel S. G. AlIen, and were heartily given. Serjeant-Major Wickersham then proposed a hearty vote of thanks to Colonel H. H. Johnston, Lieutenant-Colonel S. G. AlIen and the other Officers and ladies of the Corps, the youngsters cheering lustily. '

"The proceedings were brought to a close about 7 p.m., and the little ones trotted off to bed to dream of Father Ohristmas, Fairy Tales, Christmas trees, &0., &0.

"In conclusion, I cannot do more than thank the ladies of the Corps for their excellent presents and their hard work in connection with the entertainment, and wish them all prosperity in the New Year."

NOTES FROM CAIRO.-Quarter-Master Serjeant Conolly writes: "The Small Units Football League in Cairo has now well advanced and the Company hold a very good position, and it will be hard to say who will win the League. All the teams are very evenly matched, which can be seen by the table appended below. I am sure all those who have been in 33 Company will thoroughly uuderstand the enthusiasm that prevails over the present football talent. It is a pleasure to see the nice feeling that exists amongst the players, and our Commanding and other Officers give us every encouragement to go in for all sport, and the Royal Army Medical Corps make themselves very much felt when the time comes to take the field. In addition to the League we have played several friendly matches, being successful in the majority. There is !I- rumour in the air that. the Detachment 33 Oompany at Alexandria wish to play the Headquarters of the Company at football. Rather bold, but still we shall be only too pleased to play and entertain them. There will be no donbt as to the result. I suppose Khartoum will be our next challengers???

" The annual five-a-side tournament Championship was held on the ground of the Egyptian State Railway Institute on November 21 and 22. Gold medals were awarded to the winners, and silver medals to the losers. We entered two teams A. and B. Our first team (a) met the Egyptian State Railway second team, and won by 5 points to nil. The second team (b) met a very strong side of the 1st Scots Guards and lost by 16 points to 1. Our successful side were drawn against the State Ra,ilways first team on the second day, the result being 5 points each. After two replays we were eventually defeated by 13 points to 9. I think I can add a few words of praise without hurting the dignity of other players, to Private Sims, who played splendidly throughout, scoring the majority of points .

. " Prior to his departure for England, Major lV!:. H. G. Fell, R.A.M.O., kindly left a sum of money to be competed for in outdoor sport by the members of the Oompany. After, several suggestions it was decided to allot a portion of the money to a six-a-side tournament, to be played on the right square of the hospital. Incidentally, first aid to the wounded was necessary on occasions, play being of a very free' and easy nature. Our sympathy went out to Corporal Dewhurst, who was referee during the mi!lee, but the result was satisfactory to all. The winning team was composed of Privates Sawers, Dixon, Ooney, Sims, Wilby aud Burr. The remaining portion of the money will be competed for at a future date.

"For the first time the Company entered a team in the. Rink Hockey Civilian and Military League, and finished with a fairly good record. This year we have a much improved team, the result of our matches being as follows :-

" Played 4, won 2, lost 2. Goals: For 21 against 14. . "Team.-Serjeant Gale (goal), Privates Beck, Ashcroft and Coles, 'Oaptain'

(half backs), Privates Godden, Sims and WaIters (forwards). " On December 7, Lieutenant N. Lieth-Hay-Clark, 1st Suffolk Regiment, arranged

l'l.splendid boxing tournament in aid of Lady Lowther's War Fund in Ezbekieh Gardens, which was attended by a very large and mixed audience of soldiers and eivilians of Cairo. The principal item on the programme was the 15 round contest between Private Keddie, 1st Suffolk Regiment (light weight champion of the Medi terranean, Egypt and the Sudan), and Private Sims, of the Royal Army Medical Corps. The whole of the 15 .rounds were fought, our man losing on a small margin of points. It was the general opinion in Cairo that it was one of the finest fights witnessed fOr some time. The best man undoubtedly won.

"Christmas in No. 33 Company, R.A.M.O., was kept up in the usual happy spirit

of Yuletide .. On Christmas Eye, carols were heard in the military stations at Kasr-elNil, Abbassia, and the Citadel, the headquarters of the Company being most conspicuous by their vocal powers in 'Hark, the Herald Angels Sing,' and' 0 Come, all ye Faithful,' the principal soloists being Serjeants Moore and Wilkin. The right basement of the hospital was splendidly decorated by Privates Barnard and Ferdinando, and the cat.ering arrangements were in the able hands of Corporal Bevan, and Privates Sims, Dedow,. Ball, Sprinks, and Hake. At dinner-time the Commanding and other Officers of the Corps paid a visit to the dining hall to wish all ranks a Merry Christmas anda. Happy New Year, which was heartily responded to by all, ending with the refr!1tn 'For He'sa Jolly Good Fellow.'

"In the evening a splendid smoking concert was held under the chairmanship of Sergeant-Major C. F. Houston, R.A.M.C. All the artists were heartily applauded for the songs, &c., and a most enjoyable evening was spent. NOTES FROM SIERRA LEONE.-Major B. B. Burke writes: "News from the West Coast of Africa so seldom appears in the Corps Journal that I will offer no apologies for the length of these notes.

"A number of changes amongst the Royal Army Medical Corps Officers serving in Sierra Leone took place in October last. Our genial and popular Senior Medical Officer, Lieut.enant-Oolonel A. A. Sutton, D.S.O., was relieved' by Lieutenant-Oolonel J. J. Gerrard; Major A. L. A. Webb, Specialist Sanitary Officer, by Major J. O. B. Statham;. while Major J. W. Leake was replaced by Captain J. T. , Coast' and was most zealous in protecting and furthering the interests of the Corps. I venture to say he will be almost as much missed by other Corps and Departments as by his own officers. Majors Webb and Leake (winners of the' Gilman' Lawn Tennis Cup), will also be much missed, especially in the Tennis Tournameut, where Major Leake's 'lobs' have demoralized many opponents.

"A hearty welcome was ,extended to our new Senior Medical Officer, LieutenantColonel J. J. Gerrard and also to Major Statham. It is to be hoped they may, be as fortunate as their predecessors in escaping the many perils and pitfalls of the West Coast climate.

" I am sorry to say that we lately had to invalid for malaria one of our number, viz., Captain T. F. Ritchie; we all wish him a speedy recovery.

"Early in December we had a visit from Lieutenant-General Sir H. S. Miles, K.C.B., C.V.O. I believe that Sir Herbert's ideas of the West Coast climate altered very considerably when he encountered the reality. It has lately become the fashion amongst certain novelists and others to hoom the' Coast' and be-little the. terrors of its climate. A more pernicious and harmful doctrine could not be preached and one sees the deluded victims of it on many a homeward-bound mail-boat.

" A pleasanter ,topic to write about is the Annual Royal Army Medical Corps gymkana. This popular event came off on December 9, when Lieutenant-Colonel J. J. Gerrard and the Officers Royal Army Medical Corps were' At Home' on the Recreation Ground. About 150 invitatiohs were issued, and included His Excellency the Governor and Lady Merewether, His Lordship the Bishop of Sierra Leone, Major-General Ferrier, C.B., D.S.O., and Mrs. Ferrier, all the officers of the garrison and colonial officials, together with their wives. ;Mrs. Burke, our only Corps lady in the Colony, very kindly acted as hostess and received the guests.

" The entries for the various events were more numerous than ever and the keenest competition prevailed. The' Hammock' Race, Menagerie Race, and Whistling Race attracted most competitors and provided much amusement.

"By kind permission of Brevet-Colonel Graham, D.S.O., and the Officers, the excellent band of the Wegt African Regimeut performed a pleasing and varied programme of music dnring the afternoon.

" Everything went' with a swing' from start to finish and after the prizes had been distributed by Mrs. Burke, the hearty nature of the cheers for the hostess and the Officers Royal Ar;my Medical Corps left no doubt as to the popularity and success of the gymkana .

.. Our thanks are due to Mrs. Webb and Lieutenant-Colonel Sutton for their kindness in selecting and sending out from England the prizes for the various events, and the cakes, &c., for tea. Onr N.C.O's. gave us much willing help and contributed largely to the success of the meeting." ,

Medicine.-Case for commentll.ry. Wednesday, January 22, 1913. Commencing 10 a.m. (Time allowed, 1iJ hours.) Read your instructions.

J. H., a porter, married, aged 34, wl,1s admitted to hospital on March 17, suffering from a great deal of dorsal pain. There had been no hereditary disease to account for the pain in the back, nor had he had any injury to it. the only previous affections from which he suffered having been an attack of rheumatism two years before, and an attack of syphilis ten years ago. Five months previous to admission he first complained of the pain, and he attributed it to lifting heavy packages and weights. Two months later he was unable to sleep from the pain, which became more severe, and shifted at times to his left side. Still he continued working until he was admitted into the hospital. At the time of his admission he referred the pain to the lower dorsal region, and the anterior superior spinous process of the left ilium, the pain in the latter place shooting down along the course of the genito-crural nerve, and cutaneous nerves of the thighs. There was no fever, his pulse was quiet, and his general health remarkably good. With rest, chloral draughts, and the application of a small blister outside the crest of the ilium, he remained in tolerable health and much the same condition for a month. The bowels were a little constipated. The urine normal quantity, and free from albumen and sugar. As the symptoms of the pain shooting into the testicle suggested the possibility of renal colic, or the existence of renal and vesical calculi, he was sounded for stone, but with negative results. Physical examination failed to detect anything abnormal in the abdomen ; all the organs were sound, and there was an absence of any growth or tumour. The vertebral column was apparently free from disease and deformity. The next note in the case, a month later, was to the effect that the pain was very severe, being felt at the sacro-iliac synchoildrosis, and that it became worse towards evening and night, and was of a paroxysmal character. the lymphatics in the groin were enlarged, and as there were cicatrices on the penis, it was thought well to put him under a course of mercury, on the possibility of a syphilitic tumour pressing on the origin of the nerves. This treatment, however, gave no relief. Some weeks later there was a marked fulness in the left inguinal region, and he complained of tenderness on pressure. The pain was worse at night and whenever he rose to go to stool he was unable to stand erect, but stooped towards the left. It seemed to have left his back, for he no longer complained of it there, and referred it entirely to his groin. So sensitive was his thigh along the course of the cutaneous nerves that it was impossible to use much manipUlative investigation. All this time the tempera. ture was within normal limits, and the pulse did not go above 90, though it had lost body. Three weeks later, in August, I examined him as he stood, and found a pulsat. ing tumour between the twelfth rib and the last dorsal spine. This was distinctly distensile in character. On investigating it further round towards the region to which the pain was so much referred, the pulsation could still be felt, but very indistinctly, the point of maximum pulsation being at the back. Percussion dulness extended as high as the level of the tenth rib forward to the anterior superior spinous process, and back to, the vertebral column. No murmur could be detected on the most careful investigation over the spine, nor could any epigastric tumour be found. For a week this state of things went on without change, except he looked paler and thinner, and his pulse became shabby and quick. The hypodermic use of morphia was constantly called for, and two or three grains, in divided doses of half a grain each, during the twenty-four hours, were required to give him any relief. Four days before his death, a.bout 2 o'clock, he was seized with an intense pain in the left groin, shooting down into the leg. His bowels failed to move, and he complained of "awful cramps" in his stomach, which were so bad that in the paroxysms of pain he ground his teeth. He became extremely blanched in the face, lips, tongue, hands and feet, and complained of dulness of vision and a feeling as if he were about to faint. A slight epileptic fit, with .transient unconsciousness, affecting chiefly the face and eyes, occurred at the same time. His pulse at the wrist, when I saw him at 4.30 that day, was almost uncountable, polycrotous, and compressible, the rate being 140. On examining the heart I found only one sound over the whole area, which was abrupt and short, and accompanied with a pumping action of the heart. He vomited a little grumous matter once or twice, but there was neither hoomatemesis nor meloona. I thought him dying then; but when I visited him again, four hours afterwards. I found him quieter and complaining of no pain except when his leg was moved. Next day his pulse was 130, and the two sounds of the heart were audible. Tactile sensation was, however. lost along the anterior part of the thigh; but the inner and posterior parts were sensi· tive to the touch, while at the middle part hairs could be pulled out without his noticing it. His temperature was 99'2° ; his pulse fell to 120; and the sounds of the heart became more audible. He was too ill to be examined fully, but the area of percussion dulness in the left side of the abdomen was found to be increased and a sense of fulness and hardness was conveyed to the hand on palpation from the hypochondrium to the pubes, while the right side was hyper-resonant. After this rally he had another fit of faintness, and an epileptiform seizure, similar to, but less pronounced, than the first, and he sank in four hours.

What is your opinion as to the nature of the disease? What explanation of the prominent symptoms and physical signs can you suggest? And what pathological conditions were found at the autopsy? .

Surgery.-.Case for commentary. Wednesday. January 22, 1913. Commencing 1l.40'a.m. (Time allowed, 1~ hours). Read your instructions.

A woman, aged 50, who had formerly enjoyed good health was admitted to hospital with the following history :-

Two months ago she was annoyed with" rumbling noises" in the lower part of the abdomen, and observed that she was rather swollen. After a month severe pain was felt in the right iliac fossa. Her medical adviser found a lump in this region, noted that she was becoming thinner, and recommended removal to hospital. She, however, continued her household duties till three days before admission, when Idcal pain became severe.

On admission the pulse was 110, temperature 99°, respiration 32, leucocytosis 22,000.

There was fulness in the right iliac fossa, and no movement on respiration. On palpation the area was found to be rigid and extremely tender and the lower part dull on percussion. The skin was unaltered. Rectal examination, family history, and general functions were negative.

Discuss the diagnosis and the operative treatment you would adopt.

It was resolved that the Fire Insurance Policy shOUld be sent to the Secretary for transmission to the Bankers for safe keeping, and that the Bankers be instructed to pay the premium thereon annually.

(7) The accounts for 1912 were considered and passed and are attached to these Minutes. It was decided on the proposal of Colonel Skinner, seconded by SurgeonGeneral Babtie, that as the Fund is only receiving 2~ per cent. on its deposit account, a sum of £2,000 should be invested in Trust Fund Securities in the ex·officio names of the Director·General A.M.S., the Commandant of the Royal Army Medical College and the Deputy Director Medical Services, London district.

(8) A letter was read from Major Browne Mason referring to a private Memorial Fund for the late-Major L. Parker, asking if the Royal Army Medical Corps Fund would take it over. It was resolved that as not only was there no precedent for such action, but that similar applications have been previously refused and that the Royal Army Medical Corps Fund only undertook Memorials of distinguished officers; this application therefore could not be entertained.

(9) The Committee hope that any officer discovering a print or sketch portraying any worthies of the Medical Service of the Army, such as Robert Jackson, Donald Muuro, Brocklesby, or Marshall, will communicate with the Secretary of the Fund with a view to the Committee purchasing the same.

(10) It was sanctioned that the sum of £3 13s. 6d. be paid to Lieutenant·Colonel Wilson for his office expenses.in connection with obtaining employment for N.C.Os. and men of the Corps during 1912.
