1. Tho Greonlund Salmon Fishery

Until a few yours ugo the salnon fishcry hUG bcen cf vory little inpormnco totho Greenl~d fisherios.

Kupisigdlit in tho inner part of the Godthdb Fjord is the only rivor wheresalmon i5 lmown to spawn. The Groenlundora huvo in mo.ny yea.rs fishod for salmon instono trups built ueross tho rivor. In tho fjords Amerdloq und Ikertoq (Division 1 B)(soo Churt) the Greonlandors earry out gill-net fisheries for salmon in the autumnmonths in tho open fjord. Theso fisherios havc beon very modest, und tho eateh husmainly boon used for 10eo.l eonsu~ption. In tho thirties sulmon cccurred in tho uutunnalong the ccust und wus cuught oceo.sior~lly in different pluces particulo.rly nearNapassoq in Sukkertoppen district (Division 1 C) but no ccnmercio.l fishory ~o.s carriedout. The Royal Groonland Trading Company which ho.d monopoly of 0.11 trading in Greonlundwas not interested in buying aalmon bocuuse the on1y possibi1ity of curing the fishwus sulting, and salted salmon is u ro.ther poor preduct. Furthermore, the occurrcnceof salmen ulong the coust f1uctuated much frcm yoar to year.

According to reports from French, Spanish und Furoesc trawlers sa1Qon wereoften caught in cod trawl in tho autumn in the Duvis Struit, 0speciully on StoreHellcfisko Bank.

More detai1ed information ubout tho occurrenco of sa1non in Groenlund watershave been givon by J~rgen Nie1sen (1961).

In recont years modern freozing plants havo been built in tho biggerGreenland towns which provide tho possibility for production of frozen salnon whichis u vu1uable product. Some few Greonlundors started u gill-net fishery for su1monin 1959 near Napassoq (Divisicn 1 C). The output was medest, cnly 13 tons. In 1960the production wus 55 tons frozon salmen preduced in the sume freezing p1unt us in1959. In 1961 the sulmon fishery Was u1so carried cut in Ho1stoinsborg, Godthab a.ndFrcderikaMb dis tricts. Tho tomI catch wan 115 tons. The following year tho outputdoubled to 220 tons. The bes t catch wus obtuin3d in Div~.s ion 1 C with 162 tons. In1963 the output increused to 420 tons. Tho distribution on districts diffored frcm1962. Holsteinsborg (Division 1 B) had the b3nt rosult, 134 tons.

The cod fishory which rcachod its peuk in 1962 decreascd ubruptly in 1963bocause tho cod occurrod in only vcry smull n~ounts in tho coastal rogion. Also in1964 the occurrence of cod was poor, and tho total catch of cod showed u heuviordecrouGo thnn in tllO yca.r beforo. The ncurcity of cod tcgether with the high pricesfor salmon givo rise to u more intensified sulmon fishery. Tho total cutch of sulmonwus 1386.2 tons. The biggest total catch wus tuken in 1 C.

In Tublo 2 are given tho eutches per division in tons of salmon of differentweights.

Figura 1 shows the sizo-distribution of 343 sulmon frcm Groenlandeatchos off Fisko~set (1 D) 3rd Qetober, 1964, mainly bo~~eon 60 and 77em andwith muximu ut 68 and 73 em. Sumplas of seules huve bean tukan of tho salmonfor age-detoroination but the materiul hus not yet beon troatod.

Without doubt the oeeurroneo of snlmon hns been unusun11y 1arge in 1964.In mnny plueos snlmon hnve beon seen in 1nrgo shculs in the surfaee.

It is impossible to givo u truo pieturo of how lurgo the fishinguetivity hus boon in the Greenlnnd salmon fishory in 1964. All persons who hud amotor-bont or 0. rowing-bout purtieiputod in tho snlmen fishery. An impression oftho dovolopment in this fishery may be given by tho n~~bers of gil1-nets sold in.the lust three yeurs. In 1962 loss thun a thousund nots were sold. In 19631635 und in 1964 2560 nots wore sold. In 1965 the n~ber of nets sold by theRoyal Greenlnnd Trnding Compnny will possibly bo 6000. It is obvious thnt thenumbor of nots sold in 0. yenr is not the snme ns tho number of neto used. If wosuggest that nbout half of the nots sold in the previous yenrs eould bo usod, thenthe numbor of nets used in 1964 has been nbout 3400.

2. Roenptures in Sub-nren 1 of Snlmon To.gf!;ed in Foreign Rivers

Jprgon Nie1sen found that senles from snlmon caught off Napassoq,Sukkertoppen distriot (1 C) genorully show 0. much shorter river-lifu o.s purr thanfound for the Kupisigdlit sn1mon. Thero wa.s reasnn to nssumo thut at uny rutomost of the Nnpassoq salmon were not of Grecnlo.nd origin but bclonged to salmonstocks from foreign rivers (Jprgon Nielsen, 1955 and 1956). A single rec~pturc

off Sukkertoppen in 1958 of u salmon taggod as purr in Kupisigdli t riv'er two ycursearlior showcd thnt Kupisigdlit sulmon probably mix with the shonls ef snlmenfound o.long the const in tha autu:m.

In 1956 the first recapturo of a snlmon tugged in 0. foreign river was madein Greenlo.nd ~uters. It was a snlmon tagged in 0. Scottish rivcr in 1955. In 1960nnother tugged salmon wo.s roco.ptured. It was tugged in lliramichi River in NewBrunswiek, Canada, 1959. Beth rocuptures were caught in Sukkcrtoppen district (1 C).In 0.11, 64 salmon tagged in foroign rivers huve beon caught off West Greonlnnd frcm1956 to 1964. 25 wero taggod in rivers in U.S.A. and Cunndu and 39 in rivors inEuropo. This confiros Menzies f (1949) suggestion that snlmen from A~orica nndEurope meot in the SaI:J.e fecding area in tho IJorth Atlnntic.

Tnble 3 shows the distribution of rccupturcs of tngged salmon bydivisions, yonrs und countries where thoy WGre tD.ggod und rcleused.

Tho largost n~ber of rccapturcs TIere takGn in 1964, which is notsurprising, as the output of tho sa.lmon fishery in tha t year ,~'a.s much higher thnnin the other years.

Tho division where most recaptures TIore ~ade ~us I C which hnd the bestcntches of salmon (seo Tublc 1) •

Tho lurgost numbor of rocoptures has boon of salmon tugged in Cnnadu,England, and Scotland with 23, 17, and 16 reCo.pture3, rospoctively. It ~ust,

howovor, bo mcntioncd thnt the nu~bars of rccapturos carJlot givo nny iden nbouthow mnny sulmon migrnted from euch cOlmtry to tho VTest Groonland area bccauso thonumbor of salmon tagged by all the different nations is not knov.n.

It is nlso possiblo thnt dnto. on tuggings nnd rocaptures nro not completo, bocause some tugs are possibly sent directly frcm the fishories officers in thopluecs whore tho recapture was mado to tho Institute, uhich has carried out th3tagging Viithout giving information nbout the recupturo to the Grecnlnnd FishoricsInves tigo. tions •

3. Staf!;cs of Salmon whcn To.~ge~

In Tublo 4 is shown tho distribction of the different stages (parr, smolt, kelt. grilso, nnd big snlmon) according to countries where to.gged. Qne singlosnlmon was tugged ns a 13,5 Cm 10ng parr in 1961 in un Eng1ish rivor 35 monthsbeforo it Wo.s recnptured off ChristianshRb (1964) in West Greenlo.nd.

Tho sulmon tagged o.s smolts hnve been in majority among the recuptures. It seems probable to prosu~o thnt this stago nlso predcminD.tes the whole commercinlcutch owing to tho fact that the weight of tho recapturod snlmon tugged as smoltswere between 2,4 und 4,1 kg (menn woight 3,2 ~g), (gutted, haad-on), which is

nearly the same weight-limits found for 87,~ of all salmon in the Greenlandcatches in 1964 (seo Table 2). Another evidence is tbat the lengths of salmonbelonging to this grcup at recapture were between 60 and 77 cm with an averageof 67-68 cm, which is in accordance with the lengths of 343 salmon caught byGreenland fishermen off Fiskenocsset in 1964 (see Figure 1).

4. Time in Sea

Time frcm tagging until reoapture off Greenland bas been nearly tho sumefor salmon tagged as smolts in Cannda, Scotland, and England, nnmely from 16-17months.

The foUr salmon taggod as grilse in Canada have been beu~eon 11 and 17months in sea (average 14 months). The five salmon which were tagged as kelts inScotland and England bavo been 6 to 11 months in sea. Four big salmon tagged inIrish rivers wero recaptured in Greenland waters 6, 7, 11 and 13 months aftertagging.

Tho longest time in sea, i.o. 35 months, bad the salmon which Was taggedas parr in an English river in 1961.

5. Minimum Distunces of Migration

As we do not know by '~hich route the salmon migrate fram i ts horao riverto its feeding places in Greenland waters, wo cannot give the exaot distancemigrated.

The averago minim~ distances raigrated (nnutioal miles) Were thefollowing: Cannda 1600, U.S.A. 1900, Scotland 1850, England 2000, Iteland 1950and SWedön 2300.

6. The Growth of Reoaptured fagged Salmon

The smolts tagged bad total lengths from 10-20 cm. Vlhen reoaptured17-19 months after tagging thcir longths ranged beu~een 66 and 73 cm (2,50-3,75 kg).

Throe salmon tagged as kelts wero 64, 72, and 78 cm whon tagged and 74,82, and 95 cm when recaptured. This mOans that tho two first bad grown 10 c:n eachin 6 and 8 months respcctivolyand tho third 17 cm in 8 months.

Four big salmon taggod in Iroland had the following growth:-

Length tag. Length roc. Uonths in s ca Growthcm Cr:l. cm

58.5 70 7 11.562.5 78 6 15.574.0 89 11 15.079.5 90 13 10.5

7. Food of the Salmon

The storaach content of salmon consisted mainly of euphausians andcapolin (Mallotus) and in seme cases also of sandeeI.

SUIIL."llary

An important gill-net fishery for salmon has developed from September toDcoembor in the last three ycars in coastal waters off West Greenland (Sub-area 1).Shoals of salmen much largor than known before appeared especial1y in 1964, when thetotal catch was about 1400 tons. The majority of the salmon ware of medium sizewith mean lengths from about 62-78 an and weights betwoen 1.0 and 4.5 kg. The1argest total catch Was obtained in Division 1 C.

The two rccapturcs of Swcdish salmon are of special intcrest owing to

the fact that thc Baltic stock of salmon always has bean considered as a

loeal stock and very few recaptures of salmon tagged in thc Baltie have bcen

caught outside tho area.

No. 3 is the first taggcd salmon recaptured off East Greenland. It was

caught by jig in thc surface 600 m from tho coast.
