To TIE SENATE5 01 THE TJYITED STATES.
WASHINGTON, 6th December, 1827.
In compliance with a resolution of the Senate of the 19th of Feb-ruary last, requesting a statement of all the expenses annually incur-red in carrying into effect the act of March 2,1819, for prohibiting theSlave Trade, including the cost of keeping the ships of war on thecoast of Africa, and all the incidental expenses growing out of the ope-ration of that act, I transmit a report from the Secretary of the Navy, with the statement, so far as it call be made, required by the resolution,
J. Q. ADAMS.

NAvy DEPARTMENT,4th.Decenzber, 1827.
The Secretary of the Navy has the honor to transmit to the Presidentof the United States, copies of three accounts, being statements of theexpenditure of the appropriations for the support of the Agency on thecoast of Africa, and the Prohibition of the Slave Trade, since April,1823, when that fund came under the control of this Department, tathe 26th November, 1827, prepared in compliance with a resolution ofthe Senate, passed 19th February, 1827.As no vessel of war of the United States has been excluYsively at-
tached to that station, one of those belonging to the West India squad-ron having been occasionally sent to afford protection to the Agency, and for uncertain periods, an accurate statement of what has heretoforebeen " the cost of keeping ships of war on the coast of Africa," cannotbe furnished. The annual expense would probably be about the ave-rage cost of keeping vessels of the same class in commission on otherstations. An estimate is annexed of the expense of the several classes ofour ships, for one year. The original resolution, and paper accompanying it, are herewith
returned.Respectfully submitted.
SAMI'L. L. SOUTHARD.
