The Apollo list continues to give new life to great forgotten works of fiction. Eileen Battersby, chief literary critic of the Irish Times, described Charles Neider’s The Authentic Death of Hendry Jones – out of print in Europe for more than fifty

years – as ‘earthy and chilling... a powerful ballet of menace’.

This season we add eight more titles to the list, including Frank Tuohy’s devastating portrait of life in cold war Poland and

Umberto Saba’s Ernesto, a tender evocation of forbidden love by

one of Italy’s greatest poets.

And Apollo will now be our imprint for new and compelling works of international fiction. We are proud to announce that Min Jin Lee’s Pachinko, an epic of family life set against the

terrible 20th century history of Korea and Japan, will be our first Apollo original.

Busan, Korea 1911: A club-footed, cleft-lipped man marries a fifteen-year-old beauty. The couple have one child, their beloved daughter Sunja. When Sunja

falls pregnant by a married yakuza, the family face ruin. But then Isak, a Chris-tian minister, offers her a chance of salvation: a new life in Japan as his wife.

Following a man she barely knows to a hostile country in which she has no friends, no home, and whose language she cannot speak, Sunja’s salvation is just the beginning of her story. Through eight decades and four generations,

Pachinko is an epic tale of family, identity, love, death and survival.

MIN JIN LEE is an author and journalist. Born in Seoul, her family emigrated to the USA when she was seven. Pachinko is her second novel.

MIN JIN LEE is a Korean-American author and journalist. Her debut novel, Free Food for Millionaires, was one of the Top 10 Novels of the Year for The Times, NPR’s Fresh Air and USA Today. She has written for the New York Times, The Times, Vogue and the Wall Street Journal, among others. Her essays and literary criticism have been anthologized widely. She served as a columnist for the Chosun Ilbo, the leading paper of South Korea. Min Jin Lee wrote Pachinko whilst living in Tokyo, and now lives in New York with her family.

‘South Wind is a fascinating book, in the original sense of the adjective – spell-binding, mesmeric, and sometimes

disturbingly prophetic...’

jan morris

An Anglican bishop, on recuperative leave from his African diocese, alights at the Italian island of Nepthene for a short stay on his passage to England. Soon

he is caught up in a wild and exuberant cast of visitors and residents.

Norman Douglas’s infamous novel about Capri is a hedonistic and unforgettable classic.

NORMAN DOUGLAS was a British author who spent most of his life abroad. South Wind, his most highly regarded work, is a thinly disguised portrait of

his beloved island of Capri.

‘A Jest of God holds a special place for me... I found it an almost perfect book... holding within it the essentials of life.’

margaret atwood

Rachel Cameron, thirty-four and unmarried, is trapped. A shy, retiring school-mistress and dependable helpmeet to her overbearing mother, Rachel is

desperate for love and companionship. When she risks all in a passionate affair, Rachel’s life is changed in unforseen ways.

A Jest of God is a powerful exploration of loneliness, desire and the heavy weight of expectation on a life.

MARGARET LAURENCE is widely recognised as one of the greatest Canadian writers. Her masterwork is the Manawaka sequence: five novels of which

A Jest of God is the second.

‘The leading character is a magnificent piece of portraiture and round him revolves a number of brilliantly observed characters.

Not for a long time have I enjoyed a book so much.’

daily telegraph

Hamer Shawcross is born into a poor but aspirational working-class family in Manchester. Studious and hard-working, he becomes a socialist activist, goes into politics and rises to become part of the privileged upper classes

he started out by opposing.

This wonderfully perceptive study of a career politician is a telling elegy for the Labour Party.

HOWARD SPRING was born in Cardiff, and had a successful career as a journalist. He is also the author of My Son, My Son, another Apollo classic.

‘Ernesto was Saba’s secret book... [a] loving celebration of freedom, poetry and “the marvellous world”.’

mark thompson

Ernesto is sixteen years old and ready for life to begin. His curiosity leads him into an affair with an older man – the first step on his journey to adulthood.

Full of tenderness, humour and warmth, Ernesto is a beautifully and empathe-tically rendered coming-of-age story set in fin de siècle Trieste. Written in

1953, when the author turned 70, but not published until 1975, Ernesto is the great Italian poet’s most personal and confessional work.

UMBERTO SABA was an Italian poet. Raised by his Jewish mother in the ghetto of Trieste, he became best-known for his great autobiographical

poems, collected in Il Canzoniere.

‘The whole novel is a picture of a complete dehumanization of human beings, of an absolute victory of matter over spirit. And as

such it is strikingly powerful, convincing, and impressive.’

new york t imes

Anna Petrovna rules the ancestral estate of the Golovlev family with an iron hand. Around her swarm her family; her alcoholic sons, dissipated grand-

children and degenerate husband. But, in his darkened study, her son Porfiry – ‘Judas the Bloodsucker’ – schemes for his turn in power.

In this novel, the great Russian satirist presents a stark portrait of the Russian gentry sapped by generations of idleness and social irrelevance.

MIKHAIL SALTYKOV-SHCHEDRIN spent most of his life working as a civil servant in various capacities. The Golovlevs appeared in 1876. His satirical

classic, The History of a Town, is also published by Apollo.

‘This dystopian odyssey, darkened by Darwin and the new science of the age, is the most compelling satire of its kind since Gulliver

travelled. Butler’s quiet tone is luminous, now thrilling, now hilarious, and the satire still cuts to the quick.’

michael schmidt

When the traveller Higgs discovers the remote land of Erewhon, he finds himself amongst a strange race who have forbidden the use of machines, who

suppress originality and uphold the study of unreason and hypothetics.

As fresh and original today as when it was first published in 1872, Erewhon, inspired by Darwin’s The Origin of Species, is Samuel Butler’s brilliant satirical

response to religious and social orthodoxy.

SAMUEL BUTLER first published Erewhon anonymously in 1872. Following its success, he went on to publish several more works attacking social ideas.

‘A masterly novel, at once ferociously funny and compassionately sad in its depiction of the subterfuges and small betrayals by which

people struggle to survive in a Communist state.’

independent

A young English woman arrives in the Polish People’s Republic to visit her older sister, who married a Polish soldier after the war and disappeared

into a life behind the Iron Curtain.

Tuohy’s award-winning novel of the harsh cruelties and day-to-day depriva-tions of life in Communist Poland is a work of truth, wit and understanding.

FRANK TUOHY worked for the British Council in a number of academic posts abroad, including Krakow, Poland. The Ice Saints, his third novel, won the Geoffrey Faber Memorial Prize and James Tait Black Memorial Prize,

but has been out of print for many years.

‘To open a book, any book, by Christina Stead and read a few pages is to be at once aware that one is in the presence of greatness... Letty Fox is a fully-achieved comic novel of a most original kind.’

angela carter

Letty Fox, with brio and relish, describes her picaresque adventures in the New York and London of the 1930s and 1940s. Surrounded by a family notable for its size, eccentricity and marital irregularities, Letty herself has many casual

affairs, but is on the hunt for a husband.

Bizarre, satirical and imaginative, this powerful portrayal of a woman in full flight is one of Christina Stead’s most impressive works.

CHRISTINA STEAD wrote fifteen novels and many volumes of short stories. The Man Who Loved Children is also published by Apollo.

‘Hugely enjoyable... winds up tension into an explosion of fast-paced events.’

Conn Iggulden

‘Thoroughly exhilarating and utterly thrilling… A fascinating period in Roman history, which Ian Ross dramatizes very well indeed, not least because of the enormously likeable tour de force caught slap bang

in the middle of it – Aurelius Castus.’ For Winter Nights

‘A thumping good read… set in a little-known era of the Roman Empire, it throws us head first into a

chaotic world in which emperors rise and fall, fortunes change and a man does not know who to trust.’

Ben Kane

‘Aurelius Castus burst onto the historical fiction scene with a series panache rarely seen this early… Ross should train other authors in how to seamlessly combine research

with momentum; he makes a fine art of it.’ The Bookbag

‘Ian Ross blazes into the world of empire and legions. This is up there with Harry Sidebottom and Ben Kane.’

M.C. Scott

‘Hugely exciting, the first in a gripping sequence of books about a period often overlooked by novelists.’

C.J. BOX is the winner of the Anthony Award, Prix Calibre .38 (France), the Macavity Award, the Gumshoe Award, the Barry Award, and is an Edgar Award and L.A. Times Book Prize finalist. He lives in Wyoming.

‘The plane circled in the dark. Down below, Joe Pickett could just make out a figure in the snow and timber, and then three other figures closing in. There was nothing he could do about it. Joe knew that he might be their next target.’

The Cates clan’s history with the Picketts is about to come full circle. Viciously. Game warden Joe Pickett struck a fierce blow against them when the life of his daughter April was endangered. But it wasn’t a killing blow, and he’d always wondered if there’d be a day of reckoning.

The past comes back to haunt game warden Joe Pickett in this

thrilling new novel from the No. 1 New York Times bestselling author.

VICIOUS CIRCLE / C.J. BOX

‘With each book, Box just gets better.’ Library Journal

CHARLES JAMES BOX was born in Wyoming in 1958 and still lives there, just outside Cheyenne, with his wife and three daughters. Before he turned to writing full time, he worked as a ranch hand, surveyor and fishing guide,

as well as a small town newspaper reporter.

While working on ranches and exploration survey crews, Box learned first-hand about the beauty, cruelty, and balance of the natural world.

These qualities are reflected in his writing – the land itself plays a major role in all the Joe Pickett novels, dominating his characters’ day-to-day existence

and sparking the conflicts that animate each instalment. The peaks of the Mountain West are a landscape that is every bit as iconically American

as the Manhattan skyline or the Hollywood sign.

It took him five years to complete his debut novel, Open Season. When it was published in 2001, it won four of the five major debut crime novel literary prizes in the US. Writing one Pickett novel a year, Box has steadily worked his way up the New York Times bestseller list, won the

respect of his peers, sold over 4 million of his books in the United States, and been translated in 27 other languages.

A breath of fresh air in the otherwise largely urban world of crime writing, Box is a writer no crime reader can afford to miss.

When he was allowed to yank his face clear of the mud and scrape it out of his eyes, Robbie saw, about twenty yards away, something that at first seemed to him to be like a star fallen to earth, dazzling and indistinct. Then his eyes focussed. ‘What’s that?’ he asked, eventually. ‘I’ve never seen anything like it.’ ‘A hare. She’s a hare.’ The hare turned her head, and she seemed even closer than before. Her big dark eyes were set high up below her sloping forehead and she seemed to be looking straight at him, straight into him even.

FAY WELDON’S work includes more than twenty novels, five collections of short stories, several children’s books, nonfiction books, magazine articles, and a number of plays. She was awarded a CBE in 2001.

But these days, it’s women who have the power. They seem to enjoy an easier life than men. So what would the She Devil be up to now? The answer lies in this brilliant sequel. Tyler Patchett is a new kind of ‘heroine’. He’s an ultra-confident, twenty-something, fit and gorgeous guy. Beijing, 1322. Sixteen-year-old Wu Johanna is the granddaughter of the legendary trader Marco Polo. In the wake of her father’s death, Johanna finds that lineage counts for little amid the disintegrating court of the Khan. Johanna’s destiny – if she has one – lies with her grandfather, in Venice.

So, with a small band of companions, she takes to the road – the Silk Road – that storied collection of routes that link the silks of Cathay, the spices of the Indies and the jewels of the Indus to the markets of the west. But first she must survive treachery and betrayal on a road beset by thieves, fanatics and warlords...

The gripping historical adventure of a young woman who flees China, crossing the known world in search of her

grandfather, Marco Polo.

SILK AND SONG / DANA STABENOW

In 1993 I read The Travels of Marco Polo. By his own admission he loved the ladies and he was in China

for twenty years so he had to have scattered some seed around. I wondered what would have happened to

those children. Silk and Song is the story of one of his grandchildren, Johanna.

The Middle Ages have fascinated me ever since I found out that people didn’t stay home quite as much as I had been led to believe in World History I in high school. People were constantly on pilgrimage or crusade, and of course there were the traders who crisscrossed Asia pretty much nonstop, bringing the goods to market.

Before it’s a romance, before it’s an historical novel, above all else Silk and Song is a road trip, using Johanna and her friends to give the reader a coast-to-coast AAA TripTik of Eurasia. I admit, too, that researching the book gave me an excuse to visit many of the places

I wrote about, including China.

AD 98: The bustling army base at Vindolanda lies on the northern frontier of Britannia and the entire Roman world. In twenty years’ time, the Emperor Hadrian will build his famous wall, but for now defences are weak, as tribes rebel against Roman rule, and local druids preach the fiery destruction of the invaders.

Flavius Ferox is a Briton and a Roman centurion, given the task of keeping the peace on this wild frontier. But it will take more than just courage to survive life in Roman Britain...

Hugely authentic historical fiction series set near Hadrian’s

Wall, from leading British historian Adrian Goldsworthy.

This text excavated at the fort of Vindolanda – a glimpse of something as routine as a birthday party in a frontier zone on the edge of the Roman Empire – was the

spark that first inspired my story.

It was written around the turn of the first to second centuries AD, and this makes it the first surviving piece of writing by a woman in the history of Britain. The original text,

written in ink on a thin wooden writing tablet, can be seen today in the British Museum.

Vindolanda is one of the most remarkable Roman sites in Britain. Unusual conditions there have allowed the preservation of wood, leather, textiles and other material usually

lost. Over five and half thousand shoes have already been found at Vindolanda, more than from anywhere else in the Roman empire.

DANIEL HANNAN has been Conservative MEP for South East England since 1999. He is the author of How We Invented Freedom and his previous book Why Vote Leave was a Sunday Times bestseller. Visit hannan.co.uk.

On 23 June 2016, against all forecasts, Britain voted to leave the EU. Drawing on his experiences at the heart of the campaign, Daniel Hannan dissects the result and our reaction. He outlines why Vote Leave won, exploring what people were voting for and what they weren’t.

Hannan then asks what the options are now and proposes the ideal architecture for a new relationship with the EU. What Next is a constructive antidote to Project Fear and shows that a successful Brexit will be mutually beneficial for Britain and for Europe.

Daniel Hannan’s Sunday Times bestseller Why Vote Leave made a considered, up-beat case for

leaving the EU. Here, he outlines the plan for a successful Brexit.

WHAT NEXT / DANIEL HANNAN

The Remain campaign could not have wished for more propitious circumstances in which to launch a referendum and, yet, when polling day came, Britons voted to leave the EU in greater numbers than they had ever voted for anything.

The result was a very close one: a 52-48 result is a mandate to recover jurisdiction, not to cut all ties with the EU. We must now try to find a status that both sides can at least live with. Quite apart from the narrowness of the overall vote, we Leavers can’t forget that the UK works as a partnership of four nations, two of which preferred the status quo.

We need to find a new relationship with the EU, which may go too far for some and not far enough for others, but around which we can build a consensus. Is it possible to accommodate the chief aims of both sides? I think so. The top concern for Leavers was very clearly sovereignty. We promised to take back control of our money, our laws, our borders, our democracy. Whatever else happens when we leave, Britain must repeal the 1972 European Communities Act – the legal instrument which gives EU laws precedence over British statutes.

What of the other side? As far as I could tell, the top concerns of those who wanted to stay were, first, the maintenance of our economic and commercial ties to the EU; and, second, the maintenance of various joint programmes in education and research. It is surely not beyond the wit of man to form a negotiating position that incorporates the chief aims of both sides.

The first UK edition of the bestselling life of Alexander Hamilton, the inspiration for

the hugely successful Broadway show Hamilton, opening in

London and Sydney in 2017.

RON CHERNOW is the Pulitzer prize-winning author of Washington: A Life, Titan: The Life of John D. Rockefeller Sr. and The Warburgs: A Family Saga. He lives in New York.

An illegitimate orphan from the Caribbean, Alexander Hamilton seemed to come from nowhere to take America by storm. Rising to become George Washington’s aide-de-camp in the Continental Army, Hamilton co-authored The Federalist Papers, founded the Bank of New York and became the first Treasury Secretary of the United States.

His vision of a united nation with a strong central government, a formidable army and a vigorous capitalist economy, pitted him against many of his fellow revolutionaries. He was also an ardent abolitionist, while most other Founding Fathers owned slaves. Hamilton was years ahead of his time in so many ways and lived a life of inconceivable achievement, upward mobility and scandal.

ALEXANDER HAMILTON / RON CHERNOW

A New York Times bestseller – although originally published in 2004, it has been on the bestseller

list for over 40 weeks in 2016.

Winner of the inaugural George Washington Book Prize for early American history and nominated

for a National Book Critics Circle Award.

The book was the inspiration for the musical Hamilton by Lin-Manuel Miranda, winner of 11 Tony Awards and the Grammy Award for

Best Musical Theatre in 2016. It is projected to make over $100 million at the box office

in its first year and will premiere in London’s West End in September 2017.

‘Moving and masterly... by far the best biography ever written about the man.’ New York Times

‘A timely reminder that the era of the Founding Fathers was full of venomous vituperation.’

Financial Times

‘A vivid and compelling portrait of a remarkable man.’ Robert Caro, author of The Power Broker

‘This is grand-scale biography at its best – thorough, insightful, superbly written.’

David McCullough

‘Impressively thorough, superbly written and carefully researched.’ Wall Street Journal

‘As Ron Chernow points out in this magnificent biography, Hamilton was the boy wonder of

American politics.’ The Economist

MICHAEL HESELTINE was Deputy Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1995 to 1997. ANNE HESELTINE has served as a trustee of four of Britain’s major museums, including the National Gallery.

This book is the story of one garden, and one family, over forty years. When Michael and Anne Heseltine bought Thenford House in 1977 they took on a large estate and a wild, overgrown woodland. They set about transforming it into the garden of their dreams.

Beautifully illustrated with both professional photographs and private family images, this personal story of the creation of an extraordinary garden will delight horticultural experts and novices alike.

One of the country’s most beautiful private gardens is revealed for the first time.

THENFFORD / MICHAEL AND ANNE HESELTINE

‘This is the story of a big adventure, a search, and an arrival. A story of experimentation, disaster and – after mistake upon mistake – success!’

MICHAEL AND ANNE HESELTINE

Michael and Anne Heseltine have been married since 1962 and their joint passion has been

creating the garden at Thenford.

Along the way, they have received advice and guidance from some of the country’s most distinguished horticulturalists and garden

designers, such as Roy Hillier OBE, Lanning Roper and George Carter.

Today, their arboretum holds more than 3,000 different varieties of trees and shrubs, including rare plants collected from the wild by such well-known plantsmen as Roy Lancaster OBE, Allen Coombes,

Keith Rushforth and Chris Chadwell.

The garden also now includes an ambitious and scenic series of water features, including medieval fish ponds and a rill. They have lovingly restored

the walled garden and borders, and have created a unique sculpture garden, which displays work by

Elisabeth Frink, Michael Ayrton, Ronald Rae and, more unusually, an enormous statue of Lenin.

MATTIAS BOSTRÖM is a Swedish writer and Sherlock Holmes expert. He was elected into the exclusive Sherlock Holmes association Baker Street Irregulars in 2007.

Everybody knows about Sherlock Holmes, the unique literary character created by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. But what made this fictional character, dreamed up by a small-town English doctor back in the 1880s, such a great success?

This is the fascinating tale of the man and people who created the Holmes legend, charting the unexpected fortune of the actors, writers and readers who have recreated and renewed the idea of this most-famous of all detectives: from the gentleman amateur of the 1890s to the odd genius of Sherlock today.

THE LIFE AND DEATH OF SHERLOCK HOLMES / M

ATTIAS BOSTRÖM

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle wrote four novels and fifty-six short stories about Sherlock Holmes. More than 60 million copies have been

sold of the collected short stories, The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, alone, and they have been

translated into more than 60 languages.

Holmes has been on screen for over a century and been played by more than 100 actors, including John Gielgud, Basil Rathbone, Christopher Plummer, Peter O’Toole, Michael Caine, Christopher Lee, Rupert

Everett, Ian McKellen and Benedict Cumberbatch.

This book describes the people who have made Sherlock Holmes a success, and the tragic story of

how Conan Doyle tried to escape his own creation and the legacy that destroyed the lives of an entire family.

AIMÉE CROCKER was an American heiress, Bohemian, world traveller and author, best known for her adventures in the Far East, her extravagant parties and her collections of husbands and lovers, adopted children, Buddhas, tattoos and snakes.

With the world at her feet, and Californian railroad fortunes in her purse, Aimée Crocker had a tale or two to tell. Here, she boldly delivers her hilarious memoirs of escaping head-hunters in Borneo, avoiding poisoning in Hong Kong and outwitting murder in Shanghai.

Aimée was a woman of means, not always a lady and never what you might call ‘proper’. She was married five times, including to a Russian prince almost forty years her junior and Kin Kalakaua of Hawaii. In this laugh-out-loud story of her life, she recounts her adventures with flair, invincibility and unapologetic gusto.

Moonlit seances in Honolulu. Exotic cobra dances. Drinking games with Oscar Wilde. The

most sought after out-of-print biography in America.

AND I’D DO IT AGAIN / AIMÉE CROCKER

Let the Mrs Grundys arch their eyebrows and reach for their smelling salts.

If I have lived fully and richly I thank God for it. My only regrets are for the things that I have not done and for the experiences I have not had. Also for the people I have

not known.

I believe absolutely that living, in the completest sense of the word… discovering the full beauty of living and plunging one’s

self utterly into the human beings that swarm through this life… is a pure art. It is, I honestly think, the highest artistic

accomplishment we can hope for…

I have been accused of living adventurously. Let us admit that word. But I have never been an ‘adventuress’… I

was not immoral, but un-moral. If I have often loved, I have at least loved well and fully. I have nothing

to be ashamed of, in spite of the scandalous press reports that hopeful reporters managed to use to amuse a scandal-loving

public. And if I have dared to stick my nose into trouble just because the game was fun, does this make me a brazen hussy?

No, this is not an apology.

It is the recollections of a woman who is no longer young and who has crowded a great deal of movement and fun and

action and adventure into a lifetime now drawing to its close.

And if I could live it again, this very long life of mine, I would love to do so. And the only difference would be that I would try to crowd in still more… more places, more things, more women, more men, more love, more excitement.

Aimée Crocker

A book about the joys of the allotment shed,

illustrated with charming hand-drawn images.

EMILY CHAPPELL is an illustrator and graduate of the Glasgow School of Art. She has been a plotholder of an allotment in Glasgow for over eight years. Visit emilychappell.com

Allotments are places to grow food – but they are so much more than that. They are also places that encourage spontaneity, exploration, learning, sharing, restful activity and camaraderie.

This book is a celebration of the allotment hut and the wonderful invention and resourcefulness that makes each one unique. The original illustrations offer inspiration for how to create your own, very special shed. This is the ideal gift book for allotment folk, gardeners or those curious about the quirkier side of life.

A HUT OF ONE’S OWN / EM

ILY CHAPPELL

I have a confession to make. I am a magpie, a scavenger, a cheapskate. Whatever you want to call it, I love

skip-diving, salvaging and getting stuff for free. I like to claim other people’s junk and make something either

useful or beautiful out of it. And I’m not alone.

It’s some sort of unwritten code for allotment gardeners – you must get materials for free, and if not for free, then dirt

cheap. People new to allotmenting soon adopt the code. No piece of junk can be underestimated.

So here’s to the self-build – the inventions, the recycling, the follies... Let’s champion the individual, their ingenuity,

and the community spirit that greases the wheel.

DAVID MANNERS is the 11th Duke of Rutland. He lives at Belvoir Castle, ancestral home of the dukes of Rutland in Leicestershire.

John Manners, Marquis of Granby and hero of the Seven Years War, predeceased his father, the 3rd Duke of Rutland, and never inherited his title. But he left two sons whose short but remarkable lives are the subject of this richly illustrated family history. Charles, who would inherit his grandfather’s title, allied himself with those Whigs who sought reconciliation with the American colonies and eventually became Viceroy of Ireland; his younger brother Robert embarked on a naval career, became flag captain of the Resolution but died of injuries sustained at the Battle of the Saintes in the Caribbean.

Based upon the detailed archives held at Belvoir Castle, Resolution is an enthralling saga of of two generations of the Manners family.

RESOLUTION / DAVID MANNERS

At Christmas 1764, Charles and Robert Manners travelled with their father to the family seat of Belvoir Castle. It was the six-year-old Robert’s first visit to the splendid estate and the impact on him must have been considerable. Charles, too, must have been impressed, for he

had not been there for some time and he was now aware that he would one day inherit it.

The castle stood high above the surrounding countryside, the site of a fortification since 1066 when the boys’ Norman ancestor Robert de Todeni, a standard-bearer to William the Conqueror, had been granted vast tracts of land across seven counties. The views from the

window were magnificent, hence the name Belvoir, meaning ‘beautiful view’.

VICTORIA WHITWORTH is a historian and best-selling author of The Bone Thief, The Traitor’s Pit and Daughter of the Wolf. Having worked as a lecturer, tour guide, artist’s model and teacher, she now lives on a smallholding in Orkney, where she writes full time.

Victoria Whitworth began swimming in the cold waters of Orkney as a means of temporary escape from a failing marriage, motherhood, a stifling religious environment and a series of health problems. Over four years, her encounters with the sea and all its weathers, the friendships she made, the wild creatures she encountered, combined to transform her life.

This book is a love letter, to the beach where she swims regularly and its micro-cosmic world, to the ever-changing cold waters where the North Sea and the Atlantic Ocean meet, and to the seals, her constant companions.

A memoir of intense physical and personal experience,

in the vein of Amy Liptrot’s The Outrun.

ORTH

This sea and these islands, the wind pimpling my skin, the spray on my right cheek, these are palpable presences in the here and now, transforming me physically. They also reach far back in human and pre-human time. But more than that, they extend sideways into parallel universes, counterfactuals: making me ask how things might have been different… They make me question everything I have known, in the face of time, danger, loss and death. The quest to find the right words to encapsulate this place is taking me on a long and winding journey.

A radical manifesto calling for a fundamental change in politics and capitalism

from outspoken MP Douglas Carswell.

DOUGLAS CARSWELL grew up in Uganda. He worked in television and the City before standing against Tony Blair in the 2001 elections. Elected to parliament in 2005, he is currently the MP for Clacton in Essex.

Everyone is sick of the oligarchy being locked into our political system. They see a connivance of cartels – the media, big business, politics – as holding the real power. As a result anti-establishment figures such as Jeremy Corbyn and Donald Trump are experiencing a surge in popularity.

Douglas Carswell is just such a man. This is his proposal for how we can change the status quo. Rebel is an incendiary book about what’s gone wrong, and how we can put it right.

CHRISTOPHER POTTER worked for 17 years at Fourth Estate, where he became publisher and managing director. He is the author of You Are Here, A Portable History of the Universe and How to Make a Human Being.

The images of the planet earth seen from space are the most beautiful photographs ever made. The astronauts who took them were profoundly affected by what they saw. They inspired a generation of scientists and environmentalists, including Stewart Brand and James Lovelock, to think seriously about our responsibility for this tiny oasis, the ‘blue marble’ falling through empty darkness.

This is an extraordinary book about the dreams of imperfect visionaries like Robert Goddard, Charles Lindbergh and Wernher von Braun who made it possible to put humans into space, and about the men who made those first dangerous escapes from earth’s orbit in tiny capsules driven by huge rockets.

The fascinating story of how we came to see the whole

earth from space.

PAUL LAY is the editor of History Today. He sits on the advisory boards of the Institute of Historical Research and the History and Policy unit at King’s College London.

Dismissed as a puritanical aberration in England’s history, the Interregnum isoften ignored in favour of the conflicts of the Civil War and the turmoil and flamboyance of the Restoration. However, in this vividly evoked narrative of the events of the year 1657, Paul Lay reveals the Protectorate to be an era of remark-able intellectual and political ferment, a time when new religious and political ideas were tested and the foundations of modern British democracy were laid.

A Kingdom Without a King traces the happenings of a remarkable year, from the Levellers’ Plot to assassinate the Lord Protector to Cromwell’s rejection ofthe offer of the crown, offering a compelling account of a governmental experiment on the brink of collapse.

A fascinating portrait of life in Britain in 1657, as Cromwell’s

Protectorate stutters towards its inevitable end.

JAMES HAMILTON-PATERSON is the author of many books, including Gerontius, winner of the Whitbread Prize; Empire of the Clouds, his book about British aviation, was a major bestseller. Head of Zeus publishes his acclaimed history of the first war in the air, Marked For Death.

The SR-71 ‘Blackbird’ was conceived in the late 1950s by Lockheed Martin’s highly secret Skunk Works, led by Clarence ‘Kelly’ Johnson. It was the apogee of jet-powered flight: the fastest, highest-flying aircraft ever built, invulnerable to other aircraft or the missiles of its time.

The Blackbird was America’s great spy plane for over 30 years. Flying over the Soviet Union, China and the battlefields of Vietnam and the Middle East, none was ever shot down. It is also the most beautiful aircraft in the history of avia-tion. James Hamilton-Paterson brings excitement, incandescent literary skill and narrative drive to the experience of flying and the making of flying machines.

‘Hamilton-Paterson’s superb book, not only meticulously researched but also supremely readable, tells the tales of many heroes. He

unearths fascinating information, but the book is just as good on the nuts and bolts of flying, and what it was like to engage in a dog fight.’

DAILY MAIL

‘For its mix of clear-eyed history, myth-busting and gobsmacking derring-do it’s hard to beat James Hamilton-Paterson’s Marked for Death

which charts the way nascent flying technology was pressed into military usage in the First World War.’ EVENING STANDARD

ADRIAN HARDIMAN was a judge of the Irish Supreme Court. He died suddenly in 2016, a few months after completing this book.

James Joyce was obsessed with the legal system, and there are myriad references to notorious trials in Ulysses and Finnegans Wake. He felt passionately about miscarriages of justice, and brooded over the potential for cruel verdicts when agents of the state are granted too much power or credibility.

Adrian Hardiman recreates the extraordinary trials in Dublin and London that captured Joyce’s imagination, and the atmosphere of the Victorian and Edward-ian courtrooms in which the death penalty often loomed terrifyingly large.

An accessible and original book about James Joyce and the law,

by the most brilliant lawyer of his generation.

JOYCE IN COURT / ADRIAN HARDIMAN

Justice Adrian Hardiman was a judge of the Irish Supreme Court, and generally

acknowledged as the most brilliant lawyer of his generation. He was an iconoclast, and lived life to the full. Promoted straight from the Irish

Bar to the country’s highest court, he was a fierce advocate of citizens’ rights against the overweening power of the state, attempts to

legislate new collective rights and a consistent critic of police behaviour. A controversial,

brilliant and opinionated man, he was hugely respected in Ireland. When he died suddenly in March 2016, his early and sudden death

provoked a widespread sense of loss and he was mourned by thousands of people

from across the political spectrum.

Books about the work of James Joyce are a forbidding academic

industry, a slew of the unreadable and the esoteric. Adrian Hardiman’s

book is both highly readable and strikingly original. It is a remarkable

evocation of a not-quite vanished world by a great lawyer, who was himself haunted by the dangers

of unjust legal procedures.

BIJAN OMRANI is an Oxford-educated classicist who specializes in narrating ancient history through travel. He is the author of Afghanistan: A Companion and Guide, and Asia Overland: Tales of Travel on the Trans-Siberian and Silk Road.

Julius Caesar’s conquests in Gaul in the 50s BC were bloody, but the cultural revolution they brought in their wake transformed forever the ancient Celtic culture of that country. After Caesar, the Gauls exchanged their tribal quarrels for togas and acquired the paraphernalia of civilized Roman life. The Romans also left a legacy of language, literature, law, government, religion and industry.

From the amphitheatres of Arles and Nîmes to the battlefield of Châlons, where Flavius Aetius defeated Attila the Hun, Bijan Omrani uses archaeological sites, artefacts and landscapes to reveal how the imprint of Rome has shaped France – and thereby helped to create modern Europe.

A journey across France in the footsteps of Julius Caesar by

an exciting new voice in Roman history.

CAESAR’S FOOTPRINTS / BIJAN OMRANI

The Romans changed the face of Europe forever.

They introduced the notions of cities and civic

life. Triumphal arches, forums, amphitheatres,

temples, stadiums, and later cathedrals sprang up in the new

great urban centres. Roads and inns made long-distance travel a simple

matter. Across the countryside, elegant villas with columns and fine mosaics

replaced the simple Gallic huts and farmsteads. The vine and the olive spread across the land…

HYWEL WILLIAMS is a historian, commentator and broadcaster and a senior adviser at the Legatum Institute. His books include Cassell’s Chronology of World History, Fifty Days that Changed the World and Britain’s Power Elites.

Hywel Williams tells the story of Great Britain in its chronological, political and geographical entirety: from the Roman invasion of Britannia in the first century AD to the fast-changing, multi-ethnic and possibly fragmenting Britain of the second decade of the third millennium.

Narrated in lucid and informative prose and amplified by ‘capsule biographies’ of Great Britons from Bede to Brunel and from Dickens to Darwin, The Seven Ages of Britain is an enthralling journey across two millennia of British history. It is the perfect introduction to the key events of our nation’s past. As such it belongs on the bookshelf of any reader with a curiosity about our island’s story.

A magisterial narrative history of Britain from the

Roman conquest to the twenty-first century.

THE SEVEN AGES OF BRITAIN / HYWEL W

ILLIAMS

It can be argued that empire came at a cost and that Britain itself was the loser. The administrators, soldiers, clergy and educators who went to serve, teach, govern and to maintain a civil peace in the colonies were possessed of energies and talents that could have ministered to Britain’s domestic needs. On good days, as well as many that were not so good, they displayed at their best gifts of wit, resilience, patience, self-deprecation, compromise, pragmatism, charity, tolerance, optimism, subtlety and humour that are dear to the British self-definition. These are also the qualities that will be needed as Britain, that society which is so persistently ancient and yet so bouncingly modern, navigates its way along the high seas of the twenty-first century.
