Sherry Salant ExhibitThrough October 17

Medium: Mixed media prints

Sherry Salant, who taught English and journalism at Francis Howell High School for 24 years, creates vividly-colored mixed-media images with an alcohol ink process. Rather than draw or paint with a brush, she uses what she calls an organic process, pouring or dropping brilliantly-colored alcohol inks onto a nonporous surface or paper, and then tilting the image back and forth to allow the ink to flow. Based on the results, she may add fine lines with a blending pen to create the final image, usually fantastically-colored landscapes and florals.

“I never know what the end product will look like until it is finished,” she says. “There is little pre-planning in organic art. You just have to go with the flow with little or no brush work.” She adds, “I am a true tree hugger, and nature is my primary subject in each unique piece.”

Opportunities for Instructors and TrainersThe Fitness Program welcomes qualified, dependable people willing to share their knowledge with others. If you are certified and have experience in any fitness programs, plus an interest in working with others, please contact Ty Joyce, Recreation Fitness Specialist, at 636-474-8122 or [email protected].

Ask the DoctorOn the first Monday of every month from 6–7 p.m., meet Dr. Scott Grogan, a board-certified Chiropractic Physician, by the desk in the fitness center for answers to your health and fitness-related questions. Dr. Grogan completed his full body certification in Active Release Technique in 2011, giving him a unique approach to the treatment of patients by addressing not only the joints but the surrounding soft-tissue as well.

Dr. Grogan utilizes the “joint-by-joint” approach to patient care, which emphasizes the impact that the kinetic chain (ankles, knees, hips, shoulders etc.) can have on the entire body. Through functional analysis Dr. Grogan will locate the true dysfunction and source of the problem to arrive at an accurate diagnosis and treatment plan. Through mobilization of the joints and by placing a heavy emphasis on soft-tissue treatment and rehabilitation, his goal is to provide fast, effective care and empower patients to take control of their own health.

Fitness Tip from RSC Personal Trainer, Tina Nelson

In order to stay fit, you need to exercise within your target heart rate zone for at least 30 minutes each day. How do

you find your target heart rate zone? You can calculate it with a formula, 220 minus your age to give your maximum heart rate; the result is then multiplied by 65% and 85% to give you your target zone. Here’s an example, assuming your age is 40:

220 - 40 = 180

180 is your maximum heart rate; multiply 180 by 65% and 85%, below:

180 x 65% = 117

180 x 85% = 153

Your target heart rate zone is 117–153 b.p.m. (beats per minute).

Let’s Move, O’Fallon!Let’s Move!, a comprehensive initiative that was launched in 2010 by First Lady Michelle Obama, is dedicated to ending obesity within a generation so that children born today will grow up healthier and able to pursue their dreams.

To make that happen, the Let’s Move program provides five goals for improving residents’ health. The program also encourages communities and their elected officials to meet these goals by awarding gold, silver and bronze medals for program achievements. In 2014, O'Fallon’s Parks and Recreation Department received medals for meeting the Let’s Move goals. For more information about O'Fallon’s continuing participation in implementing the Let’s Move program, visit www.ofallon.mo.us/parks&rec/lets-move.

Goal I: Start Early, Start Smart

Provide kids with a healthy start by helping early care providers and educators incorporate best practices for good nutrition, physical activity and screen time limits into their programs.

To meet this goal, the Renaud Spirit Center contacted local childcare facilities to encourage them to adopt healthy MyPlate guidelines, provide educational materials that encourage healthy eating and incorporate nutritional activities for the classroom. Furthermore, the Renaud Spirit Center Preschool now incorporates My Plate lessons in its curriculum.

Goal II: MyPlate, Your Place

To empower parents and caregivers by prominently displaying MyPlate in local venues where food is served.

To meet this goal and help customers make healthy choices, MyPlate posters are displayed at all City-owned concession stands and nutritional information for non-packaged items is posted for customers to read. The stands also provide healthy options, including apple slices, carrots and applesauce.

Goal III: Smart Servings for Students

To provide healthy food in schools by increasing participation in the School Breakfast Program (SBP) and the National School Lunch Program (NSLP).

To meet this goal, many local schools now display the MyPlate logo on their menus, and they are committed to offering healthier options and to increasing participation in their breakfast and lunch programs.

Goal IV: Model Food Service

To improve access to healthy, affordable foods by implementing nourishing, sustainable food service guidelines aligned with the Dietary Guidelines for Americans in all local food service venues.

In meeting this goal, food service guidelines and contracts for City-owned venues have been reviewed and healthier options will be considered as we move forward.

Goal V: Kids on the Move

To encourage good health through physical activity by mapping local play spaces, completing a needs assessment, developing an action plan and launching a minimum of three proven policies, programs or initiatives aimed at increasing access to play.

Currently, all City of O’Fallon parks and play spaces are mapped on www.ofallon.mo.us/parks&rec and on KaBOOM, a national non-profit whose mission is to foster children’s play and let parents know where to find great play spaces. Visit kaboom.org for more information.

O ’Fallon’s Learn to Swim program is built on teaching aquatic and safety skills in a logical progression. Our goal

is to teach children and adults how to swim and be safe in and around the water.

The program is composed of 11 course levels:

Aqua Learning:Preschool:

Preschool Plus:Level 1: Level 2: Level 3: Level 4:Level 5:Level 6:

Level:

Shrimp I and II, PollywogTurtleSeahorseExplorerSubmarineClipperSailorAdventurerBarracudaAdult

Aqua Learning: Parent and child participation is required. Class size is limited to eight parent-child couples.

Pollywog: Class ratio is four to one instructor. Parents are required to be in the water the first four classes.

Preschool – Level 3: Class ratio is six children to one instructor.

Levels 4 – 6: Class ratio is eight children to one instructor.

Adult: Class ratio is eight adults to one instructor.

Participants will move to the next class or skill level when all skills from the previous level are mastered. Some classes may seem repetitive, but we want swimmers to perfect their skills in order to advance safely. Please keep in mind that children learn at different paces and it’s common to repeat a class.

Weekday classes at the RSC meet twice weekly for four weeks and last 35 minutes. Saturday morning sessions last 40 minutes and meet for seven weeks.

Which class is right for my child? To ensure your child’s success in the Learn to Swim program, it’s important to register children for the appropriate level. Children who have participated in the swimming program should register according to the last class successfully completed. Each child must pass a particular level before proceeding to the next.

Aqua LearningThis program helps children ages 6 months to 3 years become comfortable in and around water and prepares them to learn how to swim. The class is divided into two sections: Shrimp I and Shrimp II. Please note: Classes may seem repetitive because they are introductions to water.

Shrimp I • Ages 6 – 18 monthsParent-child or guardian participation in the water is required. The instructor will demonstrate techniques as parents learn how to safely guide children and help them advance at their own pace.
