A length of top is fed into oneend of the instrument. This ismoved and drawn until theend-aligned fibers are pulledout by a clamp from the needlefield. The fiber beard is thenscanned by a microscope andvideo camera. Fiber length hau-teur and barbe distribution andfiber diameter distribution arethen calculated by computer.

Measuring principle

OFDA 4000 is user-friendly and mill-oriented

OFDA 4000, the new genera-tion of the OFDA 100 instru-ment takes wool measurementa major step forward.

Digital processing technologyfor determining fiber length andfiber fineness as well as thedistribution of both.

Raw material control is the firststep of quality managementrequired for a modern spinningmill to survive in today’s compe-titive market.

The new OFDA4000 includes afully automatic fibre alignmentapparatus (for the long-staplesector) and provides an abun-dance of precise test informa-tion within a matter of minutes. The OFDA 4000 unit uses pro-ven OFDA 100 optical technolo-gy to determine the fiber lengthas well as the fiber diameter ofend-aligned fiber samples.

OFDA 100 serves as a referencefor the determination of thefiber fineness and its distribu-tion according to IWTO TM47 +

IWTO TM57.Its measurementresults provide information onall relevant wool fiber characte-ristics. Raw materials are the lar-gest single cost item in spinningmill, so gentle, non-destructiveprocessing of the valuable fibersis mandatory. Precise fiber cha-racteristics are required to opti-mise and monitor processes inthe modern high-performancespinning mill. For textile mills, research institu-tes and arbitrators, the OFDA4000 opens a world of possibili-

ties never before available.Thebuyer will not be able to judgehis activities safely and withconfidence until a feedback isprovided on fiber characteristicsfrom yarn quality and proces-sing performance; but what ismore, the spinning mill mana-ger can systematically introduceremedial action instead of pro-ceeding by trial and error.

Benefits of the new OFDA 4000

➼ The major wool fiber characteristics in one measurement, with minimal operator involvement➼ Length measurement and short fibre content can now be measured autmatically for the first time, as

well as hauteur (cross section biased length) ➼ For the first time, diameter vs length can be automatically obtained ➼ The size and weight of the system is much lower than the 3 instruments

(Fibroliner, Almeter, OFDA100 or Laserscan) that it replaces➼ Objective results are compared when trading internationally➼ Objective comparison of specifications mentioned in the contract upon receipt of goods➼ Systematic selection of raw material➼ Better spinnability resulting in higher efficiency➼ Determination of the blend to optimize the combing process➼ Determination of fineness and length distribution for fiber procurement full automatic➼ Determination of the content of coarse fibers, which cause the prickly feeling found in

certain woolen garments➼ Machine settings can be determined more accurately; processing variation

and its impact on yarn quality are better understood➼ A formula based on a combination of diameter and curvature can give good

prediction of wool bulk (resistance to compression)
