HS&E ACTIVITIES P LAN 2 0 0 5 Our target is to zero accidents / incidents. As individuals and teams, we must believe that this is possible and strive continuously to eliminate the causes of harm to people, property and environment. This year’s activities plan addresses four main factors. The focus areas will cover three-month periods, allowing greater emphasis to be given to each.

ITEM 1. ENSURE THAT YOU KEEP SAFETY AT THE TOP OF YOUR LIST AT ALL

TIMES, NOT JUST AT WORK BUT IN THE HOME ENVIRONMENT AS WELL

MAYBE TAKE 5 MINS IN YOUR OWN HOUSE TO ASSESS YOUR SAFEST AND QUICKEST EXIT IN THE EVENT OF A FIRE

DK TO ASSIST SAFETY DEPARTMENT ON NEXT SAFETY TOUR OF OFFICE

As it is fast approaching the Festive Season please be careful when driving the next morning after a night out if you have been drinking

alcohol. If possible take alternative travel to get to work.

COSHH AT HOMETAKE STOCK What chemicals do you have in

the cupboard under the sink/garage/shed etc?

Do you need them all?Can you reduce the list?

ASSESS Check manufacturers instructions (or data sheets)

Identify the hazards.Assess to the methods of use.

EDUCATE From manufacturer's instructions and your assessment, decide who needs to be instructed in safe use, disposal and emergency procedures.

CONTROL If you have identified any hazards, can you reduce the risk:

1. substitute with a safer product

2. keep others away from the task

3. enclose the source of risk4. wear personal protective

equipment

Prevention - Set a good example of fire safe behaviour:Be careful in the kitchen, particularly w ith hotfat/oil.Don’t leave matches and lighters aboutTake care w ith lit cigarettes and fag ends

Detection - Ensure smoke detectors are properly sited,tested regularly and kept dust free – rememberto replace the batteries.

Escape - Draw up a plan of escape in the event of fire:

Raise the alarmGet out – closing doors as you goCall the fire brigadeStay out until told otherwise

Give an extra bit of thought:

allow more journey time

think about pedestrians and other road users

don’t take chances

Prepare for the cold and ice:

Check antifreeze level in the radiator

Additive to screen wash (carry a spare bottle)

Check all lights are clean and working

Get car serviced if due

Check tyre condition and pressures

Pop a shovel and a blanket in your boot

Deal with snow and ice:

Clear all windows and sweep snow off the car

before setting off

Cut your speed

Avoid sharp turns and fierce use of the brakes
