Welcome to the HAMILTON AGRICULTURAL SHOW The Hamilton Show offers an entertaining day with something for everyone.

Take time to watch the Working Yard Dogs competition, see how they draft sheep, always listening for their owner’s commands. At the southern end of the main arena you will be entertained by the Campdrafting Riders as they compete and show patrons how to muster cattle on horseback. Your next stop should definitely be to see the Miniature Goats, if they can’t make you smile, nothing can.

Why not test your skills with Clay Target Shooting, run by the New Norfolk Field and Game Club. This will be held down toward the river at the back of the showground. To participate you need to be over 18 with a photo ID and register at the gate.

If you have little ones in tow, you’ll find plenty of children’s entertainment with the Children’s Novelty Races, The Face Painting Lady, Southern Bee Keepers Hive Display the Animal Nursery run by St Brigid’s Catholic School P&F, plus Australia Day Award winners Gretna Junior Fire Brigade.

Walking through Sideshow Alley there are rides, games, stalls, food vans and a chocolate wheel - buy a ticket or two, you may be lucky and win a prize, otherwise you will be supporting Bothwell Lions Club, who do a magnificent job fundraising and offering Community support whenever needed.

Tas Reptilia are available to give a live demonstration every hour between 10.30 –2.30 and to answer all your questions about snakes! As well, the Southern Tasmanian Canary Society’s magnificent display of canaries shouldn’t be missed under the northern end of the Grandstand.

Behind the Grandstand the Hamilton Shearing and Woolhandling Championships are held, with some of Australia’s fastest and best Shearers competing from 9.00 am.

By now you need a break...head over to the Food Pavilion BBQ & Bar and enjoy a tasty steak sandwich, a sausage or hamburger, with coleslaw and onion, hot and sour chicken wrap or a local lamb platter. Wash it down with a local brew from The Two Metre Tall Company or a glass of something from Meadowbank or Inverquharity Wines. While you eat, sit and watch the Equestrian Events or Brian Fish with his Bullock Display whilst taking in the smooth sounds of local Singer/Songwriter Bridget Pross. If you would prefer something lighter, make your way upstairs to the Grandstand where you can enjoy a plate of delicious sandwiches or choose from a selection of cakes, slices or scones and a well deserved cuppa.

The Central Highlands Rural Youth are running a beaut Ute Competition, along with the Dog High Jump , which should not be missed, it makes for great entertainment.

Stop by and marvel as Eddie Freeman creates a unique chainsaw sculpture right before your eyes. Wander through the Pavilion of Home Industry Exhibits - perhaps you or your children have entered some preserves, flowers, art, craft or photography.

The Wool Pavilion is always of interest with local high quality fleeces on display, and there is usually a farmer kicking about to answer any questions you may have on growing a good fleece.

Now you will need to walk back through the ground and look at the machinery, vintage cars, beaut utes and much more. Make sure you take your places around the main arena or up in the grandstand to watch the Grand Parade.

We hope you enjoy the Show!

HISTORY Hamilton is a small historic town with lots of personality, situated about an hours drive from Hobart, through the Derwent Valley.

The Hamilton District Agricultural Show was formed following a meeting of Soldier Settler Farmers in 1953. It was originally held in the Spring months but due to work commitments of the committee members, it was changed to an Autumn event.

The Show is now in its 64th year and has been successfully run for all of but two of these years, due to natural disaster.

In 1960 flooding greatly effected the area, and saw the concrete bridge across the Clyde River washed away, ending up on the grassed area in front of the Grandstand at the Hamilton Show Grounds.

Again in 1967, the Show was cancelled this time due to the bush fires. Consequently the Show Committee arranged to join forces with some Hayes Jail Farm prisoners - and their supervising wardens, to help split fence posts to be used for the rebuilding of fences destroyed by the fires.

The main objective of the show is to promote agriculture in the Central Highlands and Upper Derwent Valley, this show also aims to bridge the gap between folk in the city, food festivals and primary producers.

While the format of the Show has changed slightly over the years, it still places an emphasis on wool, sheep, cattle and more recently the ‘Temptations of the Valley’, offering tasting plates featuring local produce, beers and wines.
