Mr. Adler tells his narrative beginning with the history of Antisemitism from King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella of Spain, popularly known as the Spanish Inquisition. As his timeline progresses, he brazenly tells of his experience as a child in the Lodz Ghetto where he would lose his mother and brother beginning at age 10. Though far from the end of his journey, Jack would survive the infamous Auschwitz/Birkenau camps, though the rest of his family would perish. At 16 years of age and 65 pounds, Jack would be liberated by the American troops and eventually make his way to Chicago as a war orphan. Through dedication and fortitude he would earn his education, lost from his grasp by the Nazi atrocities. In his closing, his message against hate is well- established. He reiterated that we don't have to love each other, simply respect one another as human beings. The students displayed their utmost respect and very much engaged in a lengthy Q & A session after his lecture. The library has been selling copies of his book, Y: A Holocaust Narrative, and students and staff were able to shake his hand and have their books personalized. As survivors of this momentous period in history, Jack is one of the youngest at 88 years old. The value of hearing his story will be one the next generation will be unable to appreciate. Our students, both the youngest of the middle school and the seniors of the school were able to pay homage to not only his story, but the tragedy that occurred in which so many innocent lives were lost. The educational experience is undoubtedly one that will be long remembered by the student body and we are so grateful to be fortunate for his visit.

Jack Adler, Holocaust Survivor, Visits Clear

Creek High School On October 25th, Clear Creek High School and Clear Creek Middle School

welcomed Holocaust Survivor, Jack Adler. Mr. Adler has been sharing his story

for twenty-five years and with it comes the harsh realities of the Nazi aggression

during World War II. Mr. Adler tells his narrative beginning with the history of

Antisemitism from King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella of Spain, popularly known

as the Spanish Inquisition. As his timeline progresses, he brazenly tells of his

experience as a child in the Lodz Ghetto where he would lose his mother and

brother beginning at age 10. Though far from the end of his journey, Jack would

survive the infamous Auschwitz/Birkenau camps, though the rest of his family

would perish. At 16 years of age and 65 pounds, Jack would be liberated by the

American troops and eventually make his way to Chicago as a war

orphan. Through dedication and fortitude he would earn his education, lost from

his grasp by the Nazi atrocities. In his closing, his message against hate is well-

established. He reiterated that we don't have to love each other, simply respect one

another as human beings.

The students displayed their utmost respect and very much engaged in a lengthy

Q & A session after his lecture. The library has been selling copies of his

book, Y: A Holocaust Narrative, and students and staff were able to shake his

hand and have their books personalized. As survivors of this momentous period in

history, Jack is one of the youngest at 88 years old. The value of hearing his story

will be one the next generation will be unable to appreciate. Our students, both the

youngest of the middle school and the seniors of the school were able to pay

homage to not only his story, but the tragedy that occurred in which so many

innocent lives were lost. The educational experience is undoubtedly one that will

be long remembered by the student body and we are so grateful to be fortunate for

his visit.

Gold Digger Athletics Be ready to see some changes with Gold Digger athletics for the 2018-2019 school year. Next fall CCHS will begin competing in the Mile High League. The Mile High League is composed of 14 teams, 13 of which are 2A schools like CCHS. While the Frontier League was a good match in terms of competition and camaraderie, CCHS has to compete with 2A schools for the District Tournaments in volleyball, cross country, basketball, and baseball. These sports are the main ones impacted by the league change; however, track and girls’ soccer will compete in this new league. This new league does not sponsor wrestling and poms, so we may decide to keep them part of the current league, Frontier. There will likely still be competition against Frontier league schools as we have a great relationship with these schools. Football will not be impacted by this change as the CHSAA football committee established the conferences for all football programs.

Principal Appreciation Month During the month of October, the high school staff and students celebrated Principal Appreciation Month. All month long Mrs. Gardner and Mr. Miller, our middle school principal, were showered with notes of appreciation and encouragement. Thank you to all for helping us show our gratitude for the impeccable work and dedication our principals give!

Honor Band Ensemble Four of our band students were selected to perform in the Jeff 10 Honor Band Ensemble on Friday, November 10th. Emma Rich, Chloe Riser, Keith Brent, and Steven Gould performed with students from five other area schools. Students were chosen based on their performance ability and ability to positively represent their school. Students rehearsed with guest conductor and retired band directed, Doug Dalton, for roughly 8 hours before putting on an exceptional performance or five challenging pieces. Fantastic job Emma, Chloe, Keith, and Steven!

Winter Weather

Winter driving is upon us and our students have even greater responsibility while driving with ice and snow

conditions. Please be sure to encourage them to SLOW DOWN, PUT THEIR PHONE DOWN, and Drive

Smart!

Statistics kept by the Federal Highway Administration help illustrate the prevalence and danger of snowy, icy

roads:

Over 70 percent of the nation’s roads are located in snowy regions, those which receive more than

five inches average snowfall annually.

Nearly 70 percent of the U.S. population lives in these snowy regions.

Over 1,300 people are killed and more than 116,800 people are injured in vehicle crashes on snowy,

slushy or icy pavement annually.

Every year, nearly 900 people are killed and nearly 76,000 people are injured in vehicle crashes

during snowfall or sleet.

Each year, 24 percent of weather-related vehicle crashes occur on snowy, slushy or icy pavement and

15 percent happen during snowfall or sleet.

Freeway speeds are reduced by 3 to 13 percent in light snow and by 5 to 40 percent in heavy snow.

Average speeds on arterial roads decline by 30 to 40 percent on snowy or slushy pavement.

Winter road maintenance accounts for roughly 20 percent of state Department of Transportation

maintenance budgets.

Downtown Aquarium

Ms. Onago's Marine Biology class visited the

Downtown Aquarium on Nov. 8 to learn about

the large scale operations necessary to maintain

more than 500 species of animals. As a

landlocked state, Colorado offers few

opportunities to observe ocean life besides the

aquarium. The Downtown Aquarium recreates

habitats such as coral reefs, coral lagoons and

wharf habitats to give a glimpse of life at sea.

The Downtown Aquarium has (3) of the (12)

captive saw fish in the world.

Students had an opportunity to work directly

with the Aquarium's staff behind the scenes.

Several of the students are planning for and

applying at coastal universities in California

and Oregon.

Clear Creek Outdoor Seminar Class

The Clear Creek Outdoor Seminar class went to its annual

Ropes Course for a challenging and fun day on Wednesday,

November 15th. The course is located on the campus of

Goddard Middle School and once again was administered

through West Pines Training Center. Students were able to

perform various activities on the high ropes course following

the challenge by choice philosophy. Many of the students

were able to get outside of their comfort zone and some even

performed the activities while blindfolded.

Congratulations

Congratulations to this quarter’s “A” money winners! Every quarter students who have received straight A’s on their

report card are entered into a drawing. One name is pulled for every grade level to win $300. This quarter’s $300

winners are Akira Smith, Breyda Spinner, Joxan Renteria, Bejamin Griffin, Skylar Bower, and Lillie Abrahamson.

Ed & Shirley Smith

Clear Creek school district is incredibly lucky to have in our community. They believe that by giving a reward to

students for earning an “A” in their core classes that they can influence each student’s desire to excel in life. Ed and

Shirley went to school in Rifle and New Castle. Raised on cattle and pig ranches, both were active in 4-H and FFA.

Both attended CSU where they met on a blind date arranged by their roommates from Montana. After graduation, Ed

and Shirley moved to Beaver Brook Canyon where they built their house and raised their four children; Ray, Sherell,

Tim, and Shane, and all four attended school in Idaho Springs. The Smith’s have been so kind to donate all monies that

are included in the “A” money program.

“A” Money Assembly

Clear Creek High School and Middle School hosted an assembly on 11/16/17 to hand out and honor all of those students

who received “A” money. Also at the assembly we were lucky to learn from and ask questions of guest speaker Joel

Dreessen, former Denver Broncos Tight End.
