Uniting in Heart “It takes a Village”- Vocations as a shared ministry, an excerpt from The Catholic Moment, Nov. 1, 2020 In order to foster a culture of vocations in our pastorates, we must recognize that the promotion of vocations to the priesthood, the permanent diaconate, the religious life, the dedicated single life, and marriage lies beyond merely implementing programs. Build-ing a culture of vocations involves building a mindset in which the pursuit of the universal call to holiness is translated into a pur-suit of the particular way that God is calling each person to live that holiness in her/his life. This starts in the family but must also be reinforced and supported in the greater faith community. Pastorates can develop this culture among the faithful through promot-ing prayer, inspiring activities, education, and encouraging support. History has proven that young people are inspired through the witness of the vocations that they encounter. It is evident that priests who faithfully and joyfully live their priesthood are integral in inspiring young men to pursue the priesthood. This is evident for the other vocations, as well. The authentic witness of men and women who know and love their vocation is inevitability attractive and desirable for young people. Through regular encounters with those who are faithfully striving to live their vocation, a young person is moved to ask her/himself, “Could that be me?” This is why pastorates must foster a relational approach to vocations min-istry, promoting opportunities (formal and informal) for young people to encounter and interact with men and women of any voca-tion (priests and religious especially) to assist them in discerning God’s call. The phase of discernment in which a young person seeks to know the vocation that God has for her/him is unique for each discern-er. Therefore, this requires individual attention in order to apply effective resources for spiritual nourishment. This attention is what we mean when we say, “pastoral accompaniment”. Discerners often get stuck asking the question, “Am I really being called to this?” Having experienced mentors who can help name the signs of a true calling is indispensable and can give that discerner the courage to take the first step to pursue that call. Each of us can take part in this accompaniment by discerning the signs in our own lives and by fostering intentional efforts to “leave no young person behind” as they discover God’s call in their lives. There’s an old saying that “it takes a village to raise a child”. By seeing vocations as a shared ministry and by working together to apply these three basic tenets, each of us can do our part to raise up holy vocations in our pastorates. In doing so, our pastorates will begin to vibrate with new life. “Many hands make light work.” Let us each lend our hands, therefore, to the ministry of voca-tions as we make Uniting in Heart a reality. Father Dominic Petan was ordained a priest of the diocese in 2012 and currently serves as the Vicar for Clergy, Director of Voca-tions and Director of the Permanent Diaconate.

Toma todo el pueblo” - Las vocaciones como ministerio compartido, extracto de un artículo publicado en The Catholic Moment, 1 de noviembre de 2020 Para fomentar una cultura de vocaciones en nuestros pastorados, debemos reconocer que la promoción de las vocaciones al sacer-docio, el diaconado permanente, la vida religiosa, la vida soltera dedicada y el matrimonio va más allá de la mera implementación de programas. Construir una cultura de vocaciones implica construir una mentalidad en la que la búsqueda de la llamada universal a la santidad se traduzca en una búsqueda de la forma particular en que Dios está llamando a cada persona a vivir esa santidad en su vida. Esto comienza en la familia, pero también debe reforzarse y apoyarse en la comunidad de fe en general. Los pastores pueden desarrollar esta cultura entre los fieles mediante la promoción de la oración, actividades inspiradoras, educación y fomentando el apoyo. La historia ha demostrado que los jóvenes se inspiran a través del testimonio de las vocaciones que encuentran. Es evidente que los sacerdotes que viven su sacerdocio con fidelidad y alegría son fundamentales para inspirar a los jóvenes a seguir el sacerdocio. Esto es evidente también para las otras vocaciones. El testimonio auténtico de hombres y mujeres que conocen y aman su vocación es inevitablemente atractivo y deseable para los jóvenes. A través de encuentros regulares con aquellos que se esfuerzan fielmente por vivir su vocación, un joven se siente impulsado a preguntarse: “¿Podría ser yo ése?”. Es por eso que los pastorados deben fo-mentar un enfoque relacional de la pastoral vocacional, promoviendo oportunidades (formales e informales) para que los jóvenes se encuentren e interactúen con hombres y mujeres de cualquier vocación (sacerdotes y religiosos especialmente) para ayudarlos a discernir la llamada de Dios. La fase de discernimiento en la que un joven busca conocer la vocación que Dios tiene para él es única para cada discernidor. Por lo tanto, esto requiere atención individual a fin de aplicar recursos efectivos para la nutrición espiritual. Esta atención es a lo que nos referimos cuando decimos “acompañamiento pastoral”. Los discernidores a menudo se quedan atascados haciendo la pregunta: “¿De verdad me están llamando para esto?”. Tener mentores experimentados que puedan ayudar a darle nombre a las señales de un verdadero llamado es indispensable y puede darle a ese discernidor el valor para dar el primer paso para seguir ese llamado. Hay un viejo refrán que dice que “toma todo el pueblo para criar a un niño”. Al ver las vocaciones como un ministerio compartido y al trabajar juntos para aplicar estos tres principios básicos, cada uno de nosotros puede hacer su parte para suscitar vocaciones santas en nuestros pastorados. Al hacerlo, nuestros pastorados comenzarán a vibrar con nueva vida. “Muchas manos hacen el traba-jo liviano.” Prestemos, entonces, cada uno de nosotros nuestras manos al ministerio de las vocaciones mientras hacemos Unidos de Corazón una realidad.
