Welcome!
On behalf of the entire FSU Greek community, we are excited about your interest in joining the Multicultural Greek Council and Florida State University community. The Florida State University’s Greek community is currently comprised of 57 organizations with a growing population of more than 5,100 students. Within the community, there are four governing councils, the Interfraternity Council (IFC), the National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC), the Panhellenic Association, and the Multicultural Greek Council (MGC). All four councils have a significant impact within our Greek community, as well as, the campus community. The Multicultural Greek Council was recognized at FSU as a council in January 2000. Since its inception, the council has grown to 11 nationally recognized, culturally-based organizations that are an integral part of the university. As the council grows they remain true to the original purpose to unify and organize groups that seek to promote diversity and cohesion on campus and in the community. As a staff, we work closely with chapter leaders, advisors, alumni as well as governing council officers, University faculty and staff, and community partners to ensure that members of the Greek community have a meaningful learning experience at Florida State. Membership in any fraternity or sorority should compliment a student’s academic experience and better prepare them to be a campus leader and a global citizen. We hope this guide will provide you with an insight into our community. If you have any questions please feel free to contact the Office of Greek Life staff, and we would be happy to assist in your inquiry. Once you have taken a glimpse into the Greek community at Florida State University, we welcome your organization to continue through the guide to begin the application process. The step-by-step guide will provide you and your organization explicit guidelines and procedures to follow. All materials must be completed and mailed to the Office of Greek Life prior to October 1st, 2012 at 5:00pm. The extension committee will not accept any late applications. Again, if there are any questions please do not hesitate to contact us. Thank you again for your interest in joining the Greek community at Florida State University! Go Noles! Office of Greek Life
Our Mission The mission of the Office of Greek Life is to enhance the quality of student life at The Florida State University by empowering members of the Greek community through advising with a developmental approach, educating with purpose, communicating with stakeholders, and promoting values-based decision making. We advocate for the shared values of leadership, scholarship, friendship, and service within the Greek community.
Our Vision We strive to develop a community that enables individuals to make values based decisions, learn tangible skills and contribute to the betterment of the global community.
A Community Unconquered by Hazing As we strive to create a community unconquered by hazing, we hope that you will have the courage to stand against any inappropriate intake activities that you may experience or witness. Though membership in a Greek organization is a tremendous honor, it is not one that should be earned at the expense of your personal respect and safety.

MGC Extension Procedures The Process The decision to open extension is based upon the current membership of the Multicultural Greek Council. If the council has two associate member organizations at the beginning of each fall semester, the council will not be open for extension. However, all information and documents may continue to be kept on file by the Office of Greek Life and the Multicultural Greek Council for future use. Once the council has officially opened for extension, a formal invitation will be sent through national governing organizations including: NALFO, APIA, NMGC, and NAPA. While each national organization gathers its materials, the MGC Extension committee will convene to initiate the process. Once the application deadline has passed, the committee will begin to review all applications and will continue to stay in communication with all candidate organizations about their status in the process.* After the Extension Committee has reviewed all the completed applications, they will determine which petitioning organizations will be invited to campus to make a presentation. The campus presentations will include a chance to meet the Office of Greek Life staff, the MGC council, the Extension Committee, and members of the MGC community. Following the presentations, the Extension committee will reconvene with all feedback and make a final decision. All petitioning organizations and their representatives will be notified of their status prior to the conclusion of the Fall 2012 semester. Note; Interest Groups (IGs) affiliated with a national organization are NOT permitted at Florida State University. If found, the organization will no longer be eligible for membership in the Multicultural Greek Council. *All application materials can be found beginning on page 7.
7
The Extension Committee The Extension committee shall deal with all matters pertaining to extension of the Multicultural Greek Council at Florida State University. The committee shall initiate, approve, and sanction any action in the area of extension of the MGC community. Each MGC member organization will have one vote, with the remaining Extension committee members serving in an ex-officio capacity. The duties of the Extension Committee members shall be to:
1. Review all completed, eligible application materials. 2. Evaluate and determine which petitioning organizations will be invited to Florida State
University’s campus to make a presentation to the Multicultural Greek Council. 3. Determine if a petitioning organization will be invited to become a member of the
Multicultural Greek Council and the Florida State University Greek Community and forward the final recommendation to the Director of Greek Life.
4. Serve on the committee for a one-year, renewable term. The Extension committee shall consist of: One Office of Greek Life professional staff member (preferably the MGC advisor), the MGC Membership Director, three current chapter advisors, and one representative from each member organization.
