Office Safety Series 1 Slips, Trips and Falls Prevention Training Intended For: All Calumet County Office Personnel. Back/spine Head/brain Muscle strains Sprains Broken bones Death Types of Injuries Fall Statistics (2013) - BLS More than 300,000 workers injured (resulting in one or more days away from work) 681 Deaths Causes of Slips Slippery or Wet Surfaces Poor Visibility Inattention In a hurry/running Wearing wrong kind of shoes (shoes with little or no tread) Preventing Slips General Best Practices Remember: most slips accidents can be prevented. Potential solutions: Clean up spills immediately or contact the maintenance department immediately to clean up a spill. Keep a watch over the affected area to warn others of the spill. Wear the appropriate footwear for the hazards (e.g. snow- covered sidewalks, parking lots, steps, etc.) that might be present. Pay attention to the surface that you are walking on; dont be distracted by things such as looking at your cell phone while you walk. Preventing Slips Wintertime Salt/sand icy spots. Use only designated walkways. Wear the proper footwear. Walk safely (short steps or shuffle your feet). Pay attention; dont be distracted. Remove snow from footwear when entering building by stomping feet on provided floor mats. What to Do If Youre Falling Bend elbows/knees to absorb the shock of the fall; Roll with the fall; Protect head by tucking your collarbone Yell or exhale as you fall (relaxed body) Causes of Trips Cluttered work areas Poor lighting Walking surface that have loose or missing flooring Being inattentive. Preventing Trips Walk carefully and slowly when you transition from one type of walking surface to another (such as from a tile floor to a carpeted floor); adjust your walking pace and stride. Keep work areas free of clutter/litter. Ensure there is adequate lighting. Keep electrical cords and data cables out of walkways. Report any defective flooring / torn carpeting. Avoid any distractions (e.g. looking at cell phone while walking). Causes of Falls Person moves too far away from center of balance Caused by: Misuse of ladders Poor climbing habits Makeshift ladders (includes chairs, boxes, etc.) Preventing Falls Dont use stairs/aisles as storage areas. Wear appropriate footwear (soles with adequate traction). Dont use makeshift ladders; instead use an appropriate ladder or step stool. Preventing Falls on Stairs Use handrails whenever possible Walk up and down stairs; dont run Ensure you can see over the load you are carrying Ladder / Step Stool Safety Inspect ladder / step stool before use. Do not use if there is: Missing or broken rungs Damaged side rails Any other damage to ladder / step stool Keep your center of balance on the ladder / step stool (do not overreach) This person is over-reaching while on a ladder. Instead of over-reaching while on a ladder; get off the ladder and move the ladder. Ladder / Step Stool Safety Falls from ladders and step stools can be prevented by: Making sure the ladder/step stool is on a firm foundation before getting onto it Facing the ladder/step stool when climbing up or down Use both hands when climbing ladders Dont stand on top step or rung of a ladder/step stool Hoist materials up to you or have co-worker hand them to you.
