Lecturer Report: Ron BourqueThis may sound political to start, but it isn't; I'm not advocating a political solution at all.

When President Donald Trump addressed the United Nations, one of his statements bothered me tremendously. "We may be left with no alternative but to completely destroy North Korea!" No doubtthat's one of the last countries on earth that should ever be allowed to possess nukes. Why couldn'twe just take out their nuclear capabilities and perhaps their leadership and offer the poor, starving, and innocent North Korean civilians a chance to join South Korea and real prosperity?

So, I did some research. It’s not that easy. Like the Palestinians, the North Koreans deviously scatter their military weapons amid and throughout their population centers. When the Israelis take out a Palestinian rocket launcher that's been bombarding them, it's often mounted on a hospital,

school, or some such facility. It's nearly impossible to destroy it without collateral damage to innocent civilians, which makes compelling propaganda. So to have the North Koreans.

There is a Demilitarized Zone at the 38th Parallel between North and South Korea. Both sides have tens of thousands of troops amassed along this "border;” we also have missile defense systems deployed as well. Seoul, the capital of South Korea, is only 30 miles away. No missile defense system is perfect. All Kim Jong Un has to do is get one atomic or hydrogen bomb into Seoul, and we have millions of civilian casualties. I've been to Seoul. It's a large, beautiful, modern, high tech city of 9.9 million people; this would be his initial target.

Kim Jong Un will also be trying to hit the U.S. in Guam, Hawaii or even California. Let’s say he got one into LA or San Francisco. Again, millions of civilian casualties.

Diplomacy and sanctions are unlikely to work. After the collapse of the Soviet Union, the Ukraine found itself a4

Page 5: Officers 2017-2018 Council 4442 Knightly News · 2017. 12. 16. · Texas Hold-em – Gene Byrant reporting for Larry Belair: The first Texas Holdem was held, and we were the beneficiary

sovereign nation with some Russian nukes from the Soviet era. We talked them into letting us destroy the nukes and promised to protect them if Russia ever became a problem. Remember when Vladimir Putin annexed Crimea? We did nothing. Our promises are no longer considered dependable. Both North Korea and Iran know they won’t be taken seriously without nukes and are very unlikely to give them up. There are no good options. The longer we wait, the stronger and more dangerous he becomes.

As the old saying goes, if we don’t study history, we’re doomed to repeat it. In 1933, Adolph Hitler became Chancellor of Germany. In 1935, he publicly announced Germany would ignore the requirements of the Treaty of Versailles, which ended World War I. Europe was sick of fighting, as they should have been, and they did nothing.

In 1936, he reoccupied the Rhineland, which was expressly forbidden by the Versailles treaty. The Allies decided he was moving troops around his own back yard and left him alone.

In 1938, he annexed Austria. Later that year, he gobbled up Czechoslovakia. Again, the Allies failed to respond.

In 1939, he invaded Poland, and the Allies finally realized he was gobbling up Europe one country at a time. They declared war, but they couldn’t stop his momentum. In 1940, the Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg and even France fell. Norway and Denmark wouldn’t be far behind.

Can you imagine how many millions of lives would have been spared if we had stopped Hitler in 1935 instead of 1945?

North Korea is a similar situation. Once Kim Jong Un gets South Korea, its skilled workforce and its technology, Japan is likely his next target. And of course, there are plenty of other countries in the Pacific Rim that would tempt him. Like with Hitler, the longer we wait, the stronger and more dangerous he becomes and the more difficult it will be. There are no good options, except for maybe one.

In 1571, the Muslims were attacking Europe once again. They amassed a considerable fleet. Pope Pius V saw the threatand got a number of countries to join his Holy League to counter the threat. This was no small feat, as these countries really didn’t want to respond until their interests were threatened directly, and then it would be too late.

The Holy Father asked for Our Lady’s help. He asked Christians to pray the Rosary requesting Our Lady’s intercession. He ordered all the churches in Rome to be open 24 hours a day, so people could congregate and pray the Rosary together. The Holy League became a reality.

The Christian fleet met the larger Muslim fleet off the Greek coast near Lepanto. As the fleets approached each other, thewind gave the Muslims a tremendous advantage, but just before the battle started, the wind shifted, favoring the Christians.

I’m a sailor, and I tell people that Our Lord is a much better sailor than I am. I can only adjust the sails; He can adjust the wind, as we see in the Gospels. Well, He did it again. The Christians won, defeating a larger fleet and halting the Muslimadvance keeping Europe Christian.

Pope Pius V proclaimed October 7th, the day of this Battle of Lepanto, the feast of Our Lady of Victory. His successor renamed the feast to Our Lady of The Rosary, and we still celebrate it today!

I can’t understand why the Holy Father, the Bishops and priests aren’t asking Catholics around the world to pray the Rosary for Our Lady’s help with North Korea. There’s a precedent; we already know she can do it. In fact, she may well be the only one that can solve this problem without massive loss of innocent lives.

As Knights of Columbus, we are given rosaries at our First Degree and asked to pray the Rosary daily. Hopefully, we’re all doing this, and if so, let’s add the intention for Our Lady’s help with North Korea. She will, of course, speak to her Son,and I’m told He always listens to His mother.

The Knights can lead the charge, and hopefully, many others will join us. The need is most urgent, as those nukes can start flying at any time…

In the past months... and in future months...

2017 Coats for Kids part 1: Paul St.AmandThe first phase of the “Coats for Kids” campaign started when Charlie Walsh placed the order for 32 cases of coats, 12 coats per case, with Supreme. This was a $7040 line item in our approved budget. (Thank you, Bingo Workers for making this expense possible!) The coats arrived on November 1. The St. Joseph Regional School wanted to help out, as a service project for the kids and in appreciation of our donations to the school. So the coats were delivered to the school at 8:30AM, and with the direction of Gene Bryant and the supervision of the teachers, 6, 7, and 8 th graders lugged the cartons up to the school third floor.

On November 2, again at 8:30AM, seven Knights (Gene Bryant, Ralph Miele, Paul St.Amand, Mick Schwing, Charlie Walsh, Dick Collopy, and Bill Richards) answered the “last minute” call and arrived to manage the “label and sort and re-pack” operation, with a work force of 16 eager school kids, sometimes VERY eager. (Can you say, “Crazy Hectic?”) Eachcarton of 12 coats was opened up, and the individual coats got a “KofC Council 4442” label. We scrambled the coats among all the cartons of the boys, so that no box would have coats that were all the same style and color. And then we repeated that for the girls coat cartons. (Don't ask, it's complicated!)

7Child Labor (Ralph, Charlie, and Mike are hiding.) Mary Croteau, kids, Pleasant St. volunteer

Page 8: Officers 2017-2018 Council 4442 Knightly News · 2017. 12. 16. · Texas Hold-em – Gene Byrant reporting for Larry Belair: The first Texas Holdem was held, and we were the beneficiary

The cartons were all sealed back up, and some immediate deliveries were made. Bill Richards made deliveries to the Soule and Fisk schools, Dick Collopy delivered to the North Salem School, Charlie Walsh delivered to two needy schools in Lawrence, where his daughters teach and pleaded for coats for their kids, Paul St.Amand delivered coats to Ruth's House in Haverhill, and a team of kids, with Ms. Mary Croteau, School Principal, delivered coats to the food pantry at Pleasant St. Methodist Church. The remaining coats (12 cartons) were brought back to the hall, and eventually made their way to the toy storage bin for the Salem Christmas Distribution in December. The storage team consisted of Mike Banks, Norm Comeau, Al Faucher, Paul St.Amand, and Charlie Walsh.
