From the desk of the Grand Knight Worthy Brother Knights: I consider myself fortunate to be from a very large family. One of my cousins just turned 80. She has eight kids and about thirty grandkids. She lives in a beautiful house on a lake. Several years ago, she was diagnosed with Stage IV cancer. She found a doctor with a positive outlook at Mass General, and together they beat the disease. Jeannie has been cancer free for over a year. Recently, she developed a urinary track infection and went to a hospital for treatment. Somehow, it turned into pneumonia and after treatment, they sent her to a nursing home for rehab before she goes home. I went to see her last week. She’s a little confused and may have a touch of dementia from all the medication, but she’s probably the happiest woman in the Merrimack Valley. Her kids gave her an album of pictures of her life. It includes pictures of her parents, her wedding, all her kids and grandkids and all the major events of her life. Instead of watching TV, she spends her time viewing the album and reminiscing about all her happy times. Although she’s had her share of disasters, there are no sad pictures in the album. Jeannie’s always had a positive outlook and a cheery disposition. Our lives are combinations of good and bad experiences, but what do we spend our time thinking about? For all too many people, it’s the bad, the things we don’t have or the opportunities we’ve lost. Our Lord can shower us with blessings, and it’s tempting to take those for granted and think about the bad things we get from the evil one. I try to concentrate on the good things that happen to me and forget the bad, although I’m not as good as Jeannie at it. No matter how miserable I am, I try to imagine myself in ideal circumstances. If I’m sick, I pretend I’m sailing in the Caribbean with the palms gently swaying in the breeze. When something goes wrong, I try to relive something that went well. It doesn’t take all my troubles away, but it helps me be much happier. Thankfully, the COVID infection rates are going down and things are opening up. Even so, we have sound medical advice that says meeting in person just yet may be premature, so we’re going to continue meeting virtually for the time being. I’m a professional speaker, and I’d much rather speak to a live audience than a bunch of people on a computer screen. The quickest way to fail as a manager is to make decisions according to personal preferences instead of for the good of the organization. Although we miss the camaraderie, it’s really a small price to pay to keep our brother Knights safe. If the rate keeps decreasing and we reach herd immunity, we can get back to meeting in person. The government has a goal of having 70% of the population vaccinated by July. In the mean time, let’s take a lesson from Jeannie and think of all the good things our Council is still able to do. From the desk of the Grand KnightWorthy Brother Knights:

I consider myself fortunate to be from a very large family. One of my cousins just turned 80. She has eight kids and about thirty grandkids. She lives in a beautiful house on a lake. Several years ago, she was diagnosedwith Stage IV cancer.

Although she’s had her share of disasters, there are no sad picturesin the album.

Whensomething goes wrong, I try to relive something that went well. It doesn’t take all my troubles away, but it helps me be much happier.

Thankfully, the COVID infection rates are going down and things are opening up. Even so, we have sound medical advice that says meeting in person just yet may be premature, so we’re going to continue meeting virtually for the time being.

I’m a professional speaker, and I’d much rather speak to a live audiencethan a bunch of people on a computer screen.

Thank you for all you do!Vivat Jesus!Ron

Council Meeting Notes – May 12UNOFFICIAL 10th Anniversary Edition – Yeah, this May marks ten years that I have been putting outthis monthly Knightly News.

(Taken from illegible notes of ZOOM host – Paul St.Amand)Opening prayer led by Fr.Marc. Officers not attending were Dan Norris, Jay Cappello, Dan Buck, and Dave Thompson, excused. Minutes of April meeting were read by Worthy Recorder Pete Klecan and accepted. There were 31 people attending this ZOOM meeting. The start time was 7:00PM; we finished at 9:09PM.

Chaplin Time:Fr. Marc introduced Fr. Charles to the ZOOM meeting attendees. Fr. Marc thanked the members who attended the adoration service on the anniversary of his 44th year as a priest. Also, as the pandemic is winding down, he urged us all to “return to church.” Be virus-wise when attending, but we all need to come together again to celebrate mass and receive the body of Christ.

Attendees at Friday, May 7 Adoration (and Fr. Marc’s 44th anniversary!)

GK Opening Remarks: (and upcoming events) Ron thanked the members for their cards and prayers during his

medical procedures. We were reminded of proper meeting protocol. Don’t speak over each

other, wait to be recognized, be respectful. Ron and Dr. Stan Gorgol spoke on corona virus... (Summary: the

decision of the GK is that we stay with ZOOM meetings until July. We can do all our council business by ZOOM. - ed)

NH Knights of Columbus State Convention will be held “live”, May 21-23, at the Red Jacket Mountain Resort in North Conway. The overflow hotel rooms are being sold now.

We received a $250 donation from Steve Lord, in memory of his father Ralph “Skip” Lord, a deceased brother knight.

“Thank You” letters, cards, and notes received: Pennacook Pregnancy care center for our $1,500 donation St. Gianna’s Place for our $250 contribution.

Tip of the hat to: Ed Lynch and George Masciarelli for fixing the flagpole at the Council Hall Chris Conard, Rick Veilleux, Peter Klecan, Al Cormier, Dick Collopy, Dave Thompson, Chanel Simard and any

other Knights who attended Adoration with Father Marc on the 44th anniversary of his ordination, May 7. Father Marc for his “Sermon on The Account.”

Treasurer's and Financial Secretary's Reports: Bob Fournier and Charlie Walsh

Bob presented the monthly treasurer’s report, and the council is in good shape financially. There havebeen some wild market swings recently with our Schwab account, but we are still doing well.

Charlie reported on ten checks written and also that membership remains at 241. GK Ron once again reminded the council of Charlie’s long record of service as Financial Secretary and that Al Cormier will be assuming the FS role soon.

Committee Reports – DGK Rick Veilleux conducting

Membership/Admissions – Norm Comeau There is a “readmission” in the works, so our council membership might increase by one shortly. And Fr. Marc has agreed to promote a membership drive on the weekend of June 5 and 6. Fr. Marc will be speaking at the masses about the Knights; Ron will speak on the masses not done by Fr. Marc. Members will be asked to greet new candidates.

Culture of Life – Ron Bourque • Things are quiet right now.• It is of interest that a member of a Christian pro-life group is also associated with the Derryfield School. Because

of her pro-life position, she is facing opposition from foes who want her “canceled.” Jn 15-18: “If the world hates you, remember that it hated me first.” When we stand up for what we believe, others of the world will oppose us.

Web Site / Newsletter / ZOOM Communications - Paul St.AmandI have had “issues” with the email system we have been using. Often email will not get delivered, and there is no notice. Ithink many “comcast.net” customers last Monday did not get the ZOOM meeting notice. I have switched us to a gmail account, which should be transparent to the members. You will see a different sender: “council.moderator.4442NH.”

At a suggestion from Mike Petrilli, I will post the next ZOOM meeting info here. Next ZOOM meeting is Wednesday, June 9. Click on this link to enter the meeting. I will also send out an email notice on Monday, June 7. If you prefer to type in the info: Meeting ID: 826 5113 2839. Passcode: 598229

Bingo – DGK Rick reporting: Ron mentioned that the council is dealing with some internal issues with the KofC State Advocate, concerning the operation of bingo, and charitable gaming in general. We hope to resolve this soon.

While March was the biggest profit ever for us, this past April was almost as good. We are blessed.

Thanks to Paul, Lou, and Almighty God. (Lou and Maryanne Stella are continuing their recovery from the auto accident, but they have returned to working at Bingo. Keep them in your prayers. -ed)

Check out the Bingo Face Book page at: Bingo at the Veterans Hall.

Texas Hold-Em – Larry BelairNothing is scheduled for us until November.

Page 4: Officers 2020-2021 Council 4442 Knightly News

Election of Officers for 2021-2022 – Larry BelairLarry proposed a “slate” of officers and a plan for the coming years, prepared by him and Paul St.Amand. These are folkswho have agreed to serve the council. No seat is reserved by this slate; we will have an election at the June meeting. If anyone wishes to serve in any office, he may submit his name in advance to Larry, or nominate himself at the meeting.

The Slate is:GK - Ronald Bourque DGK - Joseph Balzano Chancellor - Richard Veilleux Treasurer - Robert Fournier Advocate - Daniel Norris Warden - Edward Lynch Inside Guard - James J. Harvey Outside Guard - Daniel Buck Recorder - Daniel Zavisza Trustee 3 Year - Thomas Campbell Trustee 2 Year - David Thompson Trustee 1 Year - Bruce Silver

Larry explained the process of how this slate and officer succession plan came to be. The Covid shut-down hampers our informal interactions, so we had a hard time chatting about the council and meeting the newer members. Paul made several appeals in the newsletter for “new blood” and several new members are willing to step up and serve. Also, several current office holders were willing (eager ?) to step aside for “new blood” if a candidate were found. We want to thank Jay Cappello, Chancellor; Pete Klecan, Recorder; and Richard Botti, Inside Guard; for their service the past years. (Don’t go too far, we need you in your other roles!!!)

The important position of GK is proposed to be retained by Ron Bourque for an unusual fourth year. A major task for the repeat GK will be to guide both Deputy GK and Chancellor in the duties of GK. At the completion of next year, Ron will step into the role of Trustee 3 year; the Trustees will move a seat down, with Bruce Silver getting to retire as Trustee.

Joe Balzano has agreed to be a candidate for Deputy Grand Knight. Rick Veilleux is proposed for Chancellor. This is not a “demotion” for Rick from DGK. Both men are in line and would be excellent candidates for GK. An issue is the work load of their current, real-world jobs. It is hard to predict what the work will be like in June 2022. Larry has proposed that a past grand knight, to be named and blackmailed later, does one year service as GK, to bridge the gap between Ron andJoe/Rick in 2023. That would give the two “new guys” a chance to observe another GK’s style and gain more experience.

The office of Treasurer is proposed for Bob Fournier, who is not allowed to retire. And Dan Norris, Esq., has agreed to serve as our advocate. Ed Lynch and Dan Buck have agreed to remain as Warden and Outside Guard.

To repeat: The slate is a proposal. If you wish to be a candidate, make yourself known now or at the June 9 meeting.

Tootsie Roll Drive – Pete KlecanPete reported that we are waiting to hear from the town on approval of our proposed dates for the drive.

Blood Drive – after meeting report…

Our KofC blood drive was held on May 13; 52 pints were collected. Thanks to Butch and Elaine Kealey, Tom and Mary Campbell, Norm Comeau, Al Cormier, Ed Herger, and Ed Lynch.

Relay for Life – Stan GorgolStan reported that the local groups have combined into the “Rockingham County Relay for Life,” (available on FaceBook,)because of the shrinking support in the individual towns. The Relay event will be on ZOOM in the first week of June. While hopeful, Stan is not confident of a good fundraising event using on-line tools.

Returns have been coming in a little slower than last year's pace. I am hoping that everyone that has received their tickets would return their donation along with their ticket stub so I can keep up withthe processing and posting of our results. The drawing is in early October, but your early returns will ease the bookkeeping.

TAPS – Tuition Assistance for Parochial Students – Mike PetrilliThe TAPS applications for this coming school year are available at thecouncil web site. CLICK HERE for TAPS. There are no paper forms atthe hall for TAPS, since parents of school age kids have seen lots of ZOOMclasses and are probably quite computer literate. (Not like us grandfather-type old farts! -ed) If someone does need a paper form, contact Mike. Allapplications for TAPS this year must be postmarked by July 15, 2021.

Corporation News – Mike PetrilliMike announced that our maintenance man, Al Faucher, has submitted his retirement from the job. So the corporation is looking for a member who wants to take on the routine cleaning and care of the hall. This is a paid position. Interested candidates should contact Mike.

Old Business:

Notice of Motion for up to $15,000 – by DGK Rick Veilleux. The NOM was removed from table for discussion.Rick discussed doing something to recognize the Beatification of Father Michael McGivney and his founding of the Knights of Columbus. An idea was floated to look into the purchase of a statue to honor him. He volunteered to look into this and worked with Father Marc to seek his guidance on where to begin. Rick obtained the following information so far:

Life size Statues of Father McGivney range in cost from $13,000 to $22,000 depending on material used (primarily based on whether statue is indoors or outdoors). Father Marc indicated that it would be nice to have an indoor statue in the entrance foyer of Mary Queen of Peace church, since Fr. McGivney was a parish priest. The estimated cost of the projectwood be as follows for an indoor statue:

Custom wood carved in traditional colors carved in Italy $12,980 deliveredInstallation $1,000Plaque honoring Father McGivney and referencing our council $1,000 Total estimated cost: $15,000

A motion was made to limit the amount to $6,000 by Paul St.Amand, with the reason that $15,000 was too much money tobe spent and had better uses elsewhere. Motion was seconded but failed to pass. The motion to limit to $6,000 was tabled as a placeholder for any future motion. (The tabled motion could be removed and then amended as needed.)

A sense of the meeting was taken, and the majority consensus is that various options of different price tags should be presented at a future council meeting for consideration and vote, within the limit of $15,000. A proposal may bemade as an amendment to the tabled motion at the future meeting, without need for a new Notice of Motion. 5

Page 6: Officers 2020-2021 Council 4442 Knightly News

New Business:Notice of Motion – Ron Bourque

Father Brian Kennedy is leaving St. Matthew’s. He will be going to the Dominican Republic to work full time. If you recall, he would take mission trips twice a year bringing volunteers, even including kids from Central Catholic. What an experience for them. We have generously supported these with $1,000 donations each time.

I’m requesting another $1,000 for him and his mission, as he journeys to one of the poorest countries in the Western Hemisphere.

Trustees: three motions were made. All were approved:For Anysoldier.com for $250. Speaking to the motion was Paul St.Amand. “This is the charity that was used by our council from 2004 to 2014 as a resource to provide contact with soldiers in Iraq, Afghanistan, and other war zones. Our council sent out “care packages” of goodies. During those 10 years, we sent 405 packages, weighing 5,916 pounds. Thecharity’s mission continues; these funds are to support that charity.” (On the second floor of the hall is an American flag flown over Saddam Hussein’s palace in Iraq, and a certificate, as a thank you from Operation Iraqi Freedom HQ unit. See the advertisers page, page 9 for three samples of returns we got. -ed)

Lazarus house “Hike for Hope” for $250. Speaking to the motion was Don Simmons. “This is an annual fundraiser where we support them…” (Sorry, Don, I didn’t get the rest of the discussion. -ed)

“Team Hike for Charity” for $100. Speaking to the motion was Trustee Tom Campbell. “This is a donation on behalf of brother Michael Blanchette who will be taking part in the fundraiser.”

Insurance Report – Field Agent Stephen White

Steve was attending another meeting tonight and was unavailable to join us.

District Deputy Report – George FredetteGeorge brings “Greetings” from State Deputy Joe Kowalik and gave us an update on happenings at the state. He will be attending the live NH State Convention in No. Conway and will update us later on.

George told us that he began membership in the Knights with the Windham council. He thought thatWindam was obviously the best council around. As DD, he has come to see other councils and is impressed by many inspiring events, and George reports that all councils are great, each doing greatworks in their own way. The Pelham council in his district is the oldest council in the state; he witnessed Frank Maglio, 95 years old, being rolled into the meeting in his wheelchair. Frank has such dedication to his council and wanted to attend the meeting. That is inspiring and an example

for all of us.

Job Openings! - Paul St.AmandAs mentioned earlier, I have been writing the council newsletter for ten years. I have also been the keeper of the council web site and the email sender-outer for nine years. I have become stale in these jobs. I eagerly await someone, or two or three people, to step up and take part in the communications side of the council. The job can be split up into as many as three ways: Newsletter editor, council web master, and Email sender-out-er.

I will gladly walk a volunteer through any of these activities. I would also be very willing to share the load. By the way, I thank Tom Campbell; Tom is the “mail room manager” who takes the paper versions of the newsletter and sends them out by US mail to about 27 folks living in Salem, the local Merrimack Valley area, and several retirement states. After 10 years, my jokes are stale, and I feel I am just going through the motions. Is it time for a new format? New feature sections? Time for new blood!! 8
