The American Association forThoracic SurgeryOfficers and New Members Elected/LifetimeAchievement Award
During the Executive Session of the 93rd Annual Meeting,
Dr David J. Sugarbaker was inducted as the Association’s
94th President and the membership approved a report from
the Nominating Committee, chaired by Dr D. Craig Miller,
electing the following members to serve with him on the
AATS Council during the coming year:
� Pedro J. del Nido, MD, of Boston, MA, President-
Elect;
� Joseph S. Coselli, MD, of Houston, TX, Vice Presi-
dent;
� Mark R. Moon, MD, of St. Louis, MO, Secretary;
� Duke E. Cameron, MD, of Baltimore, MD, Trea-
surer; and
� David H. Adams, MD, of New York, NY as Coun-
cilor, joining Drs J. William Gaynor, Shaf Keshavjee,
Jose Pomar, Hartzell V. Schaff, and Lars G. Svensson
The membership unanimously approved the recommenda-
tion of the Nominating Committee that Dr Fred A. Craw-
ford, Jr, the Association’s 84th President and current Chair
of the AATS Leadership Academy, receive the AATS Life-
time Achievement Award for his contributions to the spe-
cialty. A formal presentation will take place at the 2014
Annual Meeting in Toronto.
Following the recommendations of the Membership Com-
mittee, chaired by Dr Jennifer Lawton, the Council and the
membership elected the following 37 surgeons to Active
Membership in the Association:

In other actions, the membership:
� Was informed that the AATS is joining with the Soci-
ety for Vascular Surgery and the Society of Thoracic
Surgeons in co-sponsoring a symposium at the time
of the SVS 2013 annual meeting and Drs Marc
Moon and George McGovern are discussing joint
training programs in cardiac and vascular surgery
with representatives from the SVS and STS.
� Learned that the Association is continuing to work
closely with over a dozen organizations, both interna-
tional and domestic, in developing educational activi-
ties such as a 2014 Mitral Conclave in Turkey and
an annual postgraduate course with the Asian Society
for Cardiovascular Surgery in Asia.
� Noted that the Council, following the publication of
the AATS guideline on lung cancer screening, has ap-
proved the development of two new AATS guidelines,
one addressing albumin and a second on carotid dis-
ease, to supplement the lung cancer screening guide-
line issued this past year.
� Approved a 2013 assessment of $100 for all Senior
Members and $150 for all Active Members to help un-
derwrite plans for the 2017 celebration of the Associa-
tion’s 100th Anniversary during its meeting in Boston.
Editor Search Announcement
The distinguished position of Editor of The Journal of Tho-racic and Cardiovascular Surgery will become available
when Dr Lawrence H. Cohn completes his term December
31, 2014. The Publications Committee of the American As-
sociation for Thoracic Surgery is initiating a broad-based
search for a successor with an established reputation in car-
diothoracic surgery, a history of high-quality scholarship,
and an exciting vision for the future of our flagship journal.
The application process is now open and will close on Au-
gust 30th of this year. Interviews will take place in the latter
