ASSYRIOLOGYXERXES AND BABYLONIAThe Cuneiform Evidence

WAERZEGGERS C., SEIRE M. (eds)

In the summer of 484 BCE Babylonia revolted against Xerxes, king of Persia. In recent years, a debate has crystallized around the nature of Xerxes’ response to this challenge. This volume continues and expands this debate. It collects nine essays on the cuneiform text corpus dated to the period before, during and after the revolts. This material enables the authors to evaluate the nature of Xerxes’ policies in the sphere of society, science, religion, law, administration and economy against the long-term history of the region. The contribu-tions are by Paul-Alain Beaulieu, Johannes Hackl, Michael Jursa, Karlheinz Kessler, Mathieu Ossendrijver, Reinhard Pirngruber, Małgorzata Sandowicz and Caroline Waerzeggers.

LES PREMIÈRES ANNÉES DU ROI ZIMRÎ-LÎM DE MARIPremière partie

DURAND J.-M.

CHAMBON G., GUICHARD M., LANGLOIS A.-I.

DECODING SIGNS OF IDENTITYEgyptian Workmen’s Marks in Archaeological, Historical, Comparative and Theoretical Perspective. Proceedings of a Conference in Leiden, 13-15 December 2013

HARING B.J.J., VAN DER MOEZEL K.J., SOLIMAN D.M. (eds)

Decoding Signs of Identity is the volume of proceedings resulting from the symposium with the same name and held in Leiden, 13-15 December 2013, in the framework of the NWO research project ‘Symbolizing Identity: Identity marks and their relation to writing in New Kingdom Egypt’. The aim of the project, and indeed of the symposium, was to investigate identity marks of Ancient Egyptian workmen, both in a specialist, in-depth manner, and in a more general, comparative perspective. The reader will recognise both of these approaches in the present collection of papers. In the course of its three sections, the topic is narrowed down from general considerations and non-Egyptian cases, to various sorts of Ancient Egyptian identity marks, and finally to the specific marking system of the royal necropolis workforce of the Egyptian New Kingdom, which was the core material of the NWO project. This volume can be considered a follow-up to Pictograms or Pseudo Script? (EU XXV, 2009), and testifies to the continuing scholarly interest in systems of identity marks, both in Egyptology and outside.

EGYPTIAN LANGUAGE IN GREEK SOURCESScripta Onomastica of Jan Quaegebeur

CLARYSSE W., BLASCO TORRES A.I. (eds)

This volume brings together the articles dating between 1969 and 1995 in which J. Quaegebeur studied Greek renderings of Egyptian names and words. Some of them are translated from Dutch into English, and all are updated by incorporating bibliographical refer-ences from 1970 until 2018 and comments by the editors. The articles deal with general methodology, names of gods (e.g. Eserem-phis or Mestasytmis), people (e.g. double names, shortened anthro-ponyms and non-etymological writings), places (e.g. names of The-ban temples) and common words (e.g. phritob). Though written several decades ago, Quaegebeur’s work remains of fundamental importance for the study of the Egyptian language, including dia-lects before the rise of Coptic, onomastics and topography, popular religion and Greco-Roman Egypt in general. The indices also include references to Quaegebeur’s study on the god of fate Shai (OLA 2), so that his work is now available for further study in a rich domain that has been neglected in Papyrology, Egyptology and Classical Studies the last 25 years.

THE FAYOUM SURVEY PROJECT: THE THEMISTOU MERIS Volume A: The Archaeological and Papyrological Survey

RÖMER C.

The Themistou Meris was the north-western administrative district of the Oasis Fayoum in the Graeco-Roman Period, home of Greek speaking settlers and indigenous Egyptians, who lived side by side in villages, many of them newly founded by the first Ptolemaic Kings in the 3rd century BC. The book is the result of an archaeo-logical survey, and small excavations carried out between 2000 and 2016 in that part of the Fayoum; it offers descriptions of archaeo-logical remains, many of them now under threat from land reclama-tion, gives information about the history and exact location of single sites, and values the excavations, which were undertaken there in the beginning of the 20th century, often with the sole aim of finding papyri, while archaeological features were neglected. The book seeks to combine the written and the archaeological evidence, offering new proposals for identifying ancient names with ancient sites, and gives a panorama of the multicultural society of the ancient Fayoum.

THE FAYOUM SURVEY PROJECT: THE THEMISTOU MERIS Volume B: The Ceramological Survey

BAILEY D.M.

This volume accompanies Volume A which presents the archaeolog-ical survey of the sites of the Themistou Meris (north-western Fay-oum), by giving a thorough introduction to the pottery found dur-ing the survey. The great doyen of the pottery of the Graeco-Roman period in Egypt, the late Donald M. Bailey, did not live to see his volume in print. His legacy is an exemplary study of forms and materials of the different kinds of ceramic vessels, from amphorae to cooking-pots and from coarse kitchen ware to fine table ware. The book is rounded up by two short essays, which add up-to-date information on the pottery found in the Themistou Meris as well as in other districts of the Fayoum.

PESSINUS AND ITS REGIONAL SETTING Volume 2: Work in 2009-2013

TSETSKHLADZE G.R. (ed.)

This is the second of two volumes presenting the results of the Mel-bourne archaeological project at Pessinus in Central Anatolia, believed to be the site of a shrine to Cybele, the Great Mother Goddess of Anatolia. The dozen chapters, all by team members, focus on the achievements of the 2009-2013 Pessinus field seasons: an overview, the pre-Hellenistic remains, the fortifications, a survey of Pessinus and its periphery, geophysics, pottery, coins, ‘wool bas-ket’ stelai, church architectural stones, new inscriptions and new doorstones, concluding with a detailed report on the 2013 season (the last in the field before the project’s abrupt and premature cessation).

THE LURE OF THE ANTIQUEEssays on Malta and Mediterranean Archaeology in Honour of Anthony Bonanno

VELLA N.C., FRENDO A.J., VELLA H.C.R. (eds)

The Maltese islands occupy a distinctive place in the knowledge-scape of antiquarianism and archaeology. Exceptional prehistoric monuments and extraordinary remains from later periods – Phoeni-cian, Punic, and Roman – have continued to lure researchers to this tiniest of Mediterranean archipelagos. This collection of twenty-four papers is presented to an outstanding scholar, Anthony Bonanno, by his colleagues, former students, and friends to celebrate his remarkable achievements in the study of ancient Malta. The papers reflect his broad range of interests over a career spanning fifty years that in many respects shaped the direction of archaeology on the islands. They bridge prehistoric and classical studies, and tackle diverse topics that place the archipelago in its Mediterranean con-text: antiquarianism, palaeo-ecology, contextual studies, art and architecture, artefact studies, technology, economy, and identity. An epilogue written by a number of friends is a reflection of the hono-rand’s passion for travel, discovery and engagement with people from all walks of life.

BORGNA E., CALOI I., CARINCI F.M., LAFFINEUR R. (eds)

The 17th International Aegean Conference / Rencontre égéenne internationale focused on the perception of and confrontation with the past in ancient societies as well as the manifold practices of memory including memorializing and memory keeping. Construc-tion, re-use and manipulation of the past have been identified in several contexts as ideological strategies favouring cultural continu-ity. On the one hand, well-defined chronological limits have been reconsidered following the evidence of long-term dynamics based on the reproduction of relevant social practices through space and time. On the other hand, phenomena of cultural discontinuity and inno-vation have also resulted in being profoundly connected to the approach that ancient communities had towards their past, which they variously expressed in monumental architecture, funerary lay-out, iconographic and stylistic traditions and social practices in both ceremonial and domestic contexts. Furthermore, fragmentation, sacrifice or storage of material culture and economic resources are in turn strongly connected to the practice of memory, with an impact on the cultural landscape including settlement as well as funerary domains.

ROME AND THE SELEUKID EASTSelected Papers from Seleukid Study Day V, Brussels, 21-23 August 2015

COŞKUN A., ENGELS D. (eds)

Seleukos I (312-281) was the strongest among the Successors of Alexander the Great, and his territory extended as far as Thrace in the West and Pakistan in the East for over a century. His kingdom reached a new pinnacle under Antiochos III (223-187), who com-bined military vigour with political skill, but also bears responsibility for its harsh defeat at the hands of the Romans, the ascending super-power in the Mediterranean. This failure did not yet trigger the dynasty’s collapse albeit. It was resilient and re-established itself as the leading power in the Near East under Antiochos IV (175-164), who was able to maintain friendship with Rome. Gradually, how-ever, Seleukid rule was reduced to Syria or parts thereof by 129. The book tries to redress the balance of Seleukid weaknesses and strengths. Case studies either focus on power, politics and ideology of the Seleukid centre, or on continuity and change in 2nd-century Anatolia, Judaea and Babylon, before trying to integrate into a braoder picture the factors that led to Seleukid disintegration.

IN THE CRUCIBLE OF EMPIREThe Impact of Roman Citizenship upon Greeks, Jews and Christians

BERTHELOT K., PRICE J. (eds)

This volume examines the dynamic concept and changing reality of Roman citizenship from the perspective of the provinces in Rome’s vast, multi-ethnic empire, both before and after Caracalla’s grant of universal citizenship in 212 CE. In Greek communities, and in Jew-ish and Christian conceptual and actual constructed communities, the Roman definition of citizenship had a profound impact on the shape of abstract ideas of community, discourse about communal membership and peoplehood, and legal and civic models. Just as Roman citizenship was forever redefining its restrictions and becom-ing ever-more inclusive, so the borders of the other communities to which Greeks, Christians and Jews claimed “citizenship” were also flexible, adaptable, dynamic.

VIOLENCE IN THE ANCIENT AND MEDIEVAL WORLDSPIMENTEL M.C., SIMÕES RODRIGUES N. (eds)

Being an integral element of how humans interact with one another, violence, however disruptive, often also manifests itself as an order-ing force. In this collection of essays, the contributing authors explore this particular aspect of violence from a wide variety of per-spectives, in a set of studies that focus on both the ancient and medieval worlds. Case-studies in the section on Antiquity include work on such issues as domestic violence; violence and myth; vio-lence in Greek and Roman historiography, poetry, comedy and trag-edy, and art; women and violence; violence and pollution; and various studies on classical Greek and Roman perceptions of vio-lence. The medieval section continues with papers that look into the role of violence in the saints’ lives and passions, violence in the love poems of the Carmina Burana, as well as several studies that center on actual cases of violence, such as violence and women in medieval Galicia and violence at Portuguese universities during the High Middle Ages. This book is essential reading for everyone interested in how and why violence came to be embedded in the cultural prac-tices of classical Greece, ancient Rome, and medieval Europe.

RELICS @ THE LABAn Analytical Approach to the Study of Relics

VAN STRYDONCK M., REYNIERS J., VAN CLEVEN F. (eds)

This book includes a series of studies presented at the first interna-tional workshop Relics @ the Lab organized by the Royal Institute of Cultural Heritage (KIK-IRPA) in Brussels, Belgium (27-28 Octo-ber 2016). The papers cover a large variety of themes as well as analytical methods. Some papers focus on the primary relics while others deal with the nature and origin of secondary as well as tertiary relics. The first group of papers emphases on the archaeological authenticity of the relics, the second group elucidate the use, addi-tions and manipulations of the relics through the ages. The applied analytical techniques are very divers. Radiocarbon and physical anthropology are the main tools to study the primary relics, while dye analysis, imaging techniques, textile analysis and dendrochronol-ogy are used to study the secondary and tertiary relics. Sometimes unexpected techniques, like the analysis of writing ink or the deter-mination of plants and excrements, complete the wide range of ana-lytical methods used to understand the origin, nature and context of the relics.Academics as well as professionals working in archaeology, art his-tory, museum labs and conservation sciences will find this an invalu-able reference source.

EDITING MEDIAEVAL TEXTS FROM A DIFFERENT ANGLE: SLAVONIC AND MULTILINGUAL TRADITIONSTogether with Francis J. Thomson’s Bibliography and Checklist of Slavonic Translations

SELS L., FUCHSBAUER J., TOMELLERI V., DE VOS I. (eds)

Editing Mediaeval Texts from a Different Angle contains a selection of papers delivered at two workshops devoted to particular cases of text editing: the ATTEMT Workshop held at King’s College, Lon-don (19-20 December 2013) explored issues involved in the edition of texts with a multilingual tradition (covering Greek, Latin, Syriac, Arabic, and Slavonic), while the ATTEST Workshop (University of Regensburg, 11-12 December 2015) dealt with tradition and inno-vation in the field of palaeoslavistic text editing. Central to the dis-cussions reflected in this volume are general questions on variability, textual dependency and transformation, as well as methodological issues raised by the encounter of different scholarly traditions in ecdotics and by the advent of the digital. The volume opens with a honorary section for Prof. Francis J. Thomson, who in his influen-tial scholarly work has focused on mediaeval Slavonic translation literature. The section not only contains his rich academic biblio-graphy, but also a chronological Checklist of Slavonic Translations from the 9th century up to the immediate post-Petrine period (1725-1730).

THEOLOGICAL RATIONALISM IN MEDIEVAL ISLAMNew Sources and Perspectives

MUEHLETHALER L., SCHWARB G., SCHMIDTKE S. (eds)

The present volume comprises substantially revised and enlarged versions of papers read at a conference convened in June 2010 by the ERC-Project at the German Orient-Institut in Istanbul. Under the title “Theological Rationalism in Medieval Islam: New Texts and Perspectives”, a group of leading international scholars was invited to introduce important new kalam-texts that have not been the subject of previous studies or to explore new trajectories in stud-ying known key-texts. While most contributions combine both aspects, they are divided into two groups according to the predom-inating aspect. The first four contributions introduce hitherto unknown or unexplored texts and assess how these can modify and expand our understanding of kalam. The second group of contribu-tions applies novel methodologies in order to identify and interpret historical and conceptual transformations that occurred within kalam or resulted from its interaction with other disciplines. The question whether God can delay the elucidation of vague or unclear statements raises a number of thorny theological questions. It is hoped that the results of these presentations will have an impact beyond their subject matter in that their novel approaches will find their place in the methodological toolbox of kalam scholarship, thus stimulating work that will further expand our knowledge of Muslim kalam.

DAVID IN CULTURAL MEMORYFRÖHLICH I. (ed.)

The studies collected in this volume are the outcome of papers pre-sented at the workshop “David in Cultural Memory,” held at the Pázmány Péter Catholic University Budapest, 9-10 October, 2013. The person of king David of biblical history have long ago been the object of persistent scholarly interest. The present volume aims at offering an assemblage of the diversified memories constructed about David in various collections and communities. Narratives in the Deuteronomistic historiography reflect Ancient Near Eastern social and legal customs, and are added by literary topoi bearing specific meaning, customary motifs of royal biographies. Persian period Chronicles offer a substantially different picture of David. The Psalms’ religious poetry memorized him as an author and exam-ple, while prophetic literature and its exegesis refer to him in mes-sianic terms. David is one of the rare figures of biblical history remembered also in visual memory, in the synagogue of Dura Europos.

THE SAMARITAN PENTATEUCH AND THE DEAD SEA SCROLLSLANGLOIS M. (ed.)

Seventy years after their discovery, the Dead Sea Scrolls continue to shed light on the Samaritan Pentateuch. The textual features, orthography, script, variant readings and even theology of the Samaritan Pentateuch have parallels in various manuscripts found in the Judaean desert and copied during the Second Temple period. The fertile encounter of Samaritan and Dead Sea Scrolls studies has yielded this exceptional volume, featuring twelve contributions by some of the most respected scholars gathered at the University of Strasbourg on May 26–27, 2016. They cover such issues as scribal and editorial practices, political and religious history, textual edi-tions and versions, palaeography and linguistics – with provocative studies challenging classical theories on the origin of the Gerizim tenth commandment or the date of the earliest Dead Sea Scrolls.

FILIATION, ENTRE BIBLE ET CULTURESHommage à Roland Meynet

GRILLI M., ONISZCZUK J., WÉNIN A. (éds)

STUDI DEL SESTO CONVEGNO RBSInternational Studies on Biblical & Semitic Rhetoric

MEYNET R., GRAZIANO F. (eds)

Every odd year the «International Society for the Study of Biblical and Semitic Rhetoric» organizes a conference at the Pontifical Gre-gorian University (Rome). It is a great opportunity for scholars spe-cialized in this specific field of exegesis to expound the results of their research and compare them with others. Also students partici-pate, especially PhD students, in particular of the Department of biblical theology of our Faculty of theology. The largest part of the conference is devoted to analysis of texts, especially of the Bible — Old and New Testament —, but also of other Semitic texts such as the Koran, even other texts widely influenced by biblical texts, such as the Rule of St. Benedict. There are also methodological reflections, to deepen some aspect of our exegetical methodology.

JÜDISCHE GEBETE AUS DER UMWELT DES NEUEN TESTAMENTSEin Studienbuch

OSTMEYER K.-H.

READING THE GOSPEL OF MARK IN THE TWENTY-FIRST CENTURYMethod and Meaning

VAN OYEN G. (ed.)

Markan scholars have noticed a proliferation of approaches to the study of the First Gospel, thus demanding a new assessment of the current research. Simple enumeration, however, is not enough. Since the beginning of the twenty-first century, there has been an increasing need to examine each method’s added value to the better understanding of Mark’s Gospel. In this volume, forty-two research-ers reflect on the success of the various approaches. The book can be read as a dialogue between scholars. It integrates their reflections on methodology, specific passages, and particular topics of the Gos-pel. It also combines important aspects of the Gospel’s history, nar-ratology, reception, inter-textuality, composition, and theology with themes such as the messianic secret, the Kingdom of God, the dis-ciple’s role, the passion, the resurrection, and its open ending. After almost two millennia, Mark’s enigmatic story about Jesus has gen-erated more interest than ever before. The volume contains the pro-ceedings of the Colloquium Biblicum Lovaniense held at Leuven in July 2017.

LES ACTES DES APÔTRESTexte Occidental reconstitué

FAURE P.

MARGINALITY, MEDIA, AND MUTATIONS OF RELIGIOUS AUTHORITY IN THE HISTORY OF CHRISTIANITYFELDT L., BREMMER J.N. (eds)

Marginal figures, from heretics, ascetics and mystics to saints, vision-aries and witches have played key roles in decisive mutations of religious authority in the history of different forms of Christianity. This book offers new theoretical perspectives on the theme of mar-ginality in a series of in-depth case studies of marginal figures and forms of marginality. It presents a distinction between social mar-ginality, often resulting from social exclusion and demonization as well as involving discomfort and distress, and religious marginality, which can be voluntary, actively sought out, and performed. The contributions analyse both social and religious forms of marginality and demonstrate how a focus on media is crucial for understanding the role of marginality in authority mutations in the long history of Christianity. The articles discuss a wide range of media, from amu-lets, space, technologies of the self, literary forms, to visual culture and mass and social media. The book thus offers media-based point-ers for comparative, historical studies more broadly in the study of religions.

STUDIA PATRISTICA. VOL. XCIX – MARCION OF SINOPE AS RELIGIOUS ENTREPRENEURVINZENT M. (ed.)

Marcion of Sinope, as the vast output of books and papers about this second-century teacher has proven since the times when he was alive and still until today, is one of the most known and debated Christian entrepreneurs of the new religious Jesus-movement, per-haps the one who was responsible for the self-denomination ‘Chris-tianity’. In this volume papers have been collected that originated or were inspired by a workshop in 2014 at the Max-Weber-Kolleg, University of Erfurt, directed by Jan Bremmer, Jörg Rüpke and Markus Vinzent. ‘Marcion of Sinope as Religious Entrepreneur’ is not just a volume on Marcion’s texts, but also on his role and his reception in the second century, particularly in the making of Christianity.

DIE SAKRAMENTSGEMEINSCHAFT IN DER ALTEN KIRCHEPublikation der Tagung der Patristischen Arbeitsgemeinschaft in Soesterberg und Amsterdam (02.-05.01.2017)

WESTRA L.H., ZWOLLO L. (Hrsg.)

QU’AVONS-NOUS APPRIS? NAG HAMMADI AT 70: WHAT HAVE WE LEARNED?(Colloque international, Québec, Université Laval, 29-31 mai 2015)

CRÉGHEUR E., PAINCHAUD L., RASIMUS T. (eds)

In 1945, a collection of thirteen papyrus codices containing some fifty previously unknown Christian texts was discovered in Upper Egypt near the modern village of Nag Hammadi. These fourth- century Coptic texts, originally written in Greek, have allowed us to see the great diversity that characterized early Christianity during the first centuries of the common era. Now, seventy years later, it seemed helpful to look back and evaluate what we have learned from the Nag Hammadi texts in the framework of an international collo-quium. The objective was to observe progress and changes in schol-arship and to consider new avenues for research. The colloquium gathered some thirty international scholars, whose contributions take stock of previous research, recent trends and advances in schol-arship. These include a critique of received concepts (such as “Gnos-ticism” and “Docetism”), contribution of Nag Hammadi texts to our understanding of Middle- and Neoplatonism, archaeology of Egyptian monasticism, and reception of these texts in fourth-century Egypt as well as in contemporary Western culture.

THE LEGEND OF SAINT AŪR AND THE MONASTERY OF NAQLŪNThe Copto-Arabic Texts

TEN HACKEN C.E.

This book studies the literary heritage of the Coptic Orthodox mon-astery of the Archangel Gabriel at Naqlūn in the Fayyum province in Egypt by focusing on the hagiographical cycle of Saint Aūr, the presumed founder of its church. It presents the edition and transla-tion, with extensive commentaries, of six previously unedited texts, all preserved in Middle Arabic. The author argues that the literary tradition around the monastery of Naqlūn evolved in about the eleventh century, a period in which the monastery experienced a revival. The texts recall the memory of great saints from the past, among whom Saint Antony, and convey a new view of the Christian landscape of this region.

GEBREYES S.

The Chronicle of King Gälawdewos (r. 1540–1559), reporting the nineteen years of the king’s reign, is one of the most useful and significant historical sources for the history of Christian-Muslim relation in the sixteenth century of Ethiopia and the Horn. It rep-resents a peculiar text in Gǝʿǝz historiography both because of its narrative structure and the underlying sources used by the chroni-cler. Numerous Arabisms appear in the text, which eventually sug-gest that the Chronicle was written by a person with an outstanding knowledge of Arabic, in 1561. The book presents a new critical edition based on all available manuscripts and provides some detailed introductory notes and an English translation. The new edition yields philological findings concerning the Chronicle of King Gälawdewos in particular and new inputs that call for re-editing the Ethiopian royal chronicles in general. It also adds valuable by now not recorded items for Gǝʿǝz lexicography and corrects historical distortions resulted from the previous edition. Above all, the work provides a text-critically established edition of the Chronicle of King Gälawdewos accompanied by an up-to-date concisely annotated translation, which offer new insights into the late medieval history and historiography of Ethiopia and the Horn of Africa.

SYRIAC SAYINGS OF GREEK PHILOSOPHERSA Study in Syriac Gnomologia with Edition and Translation

ARZHANOV Y.

Syriac “Sayings of Greek Philosophers” (SGP) is a corpus of sen-tences preserved in a number of Syriac manuscripts in the form of different collections and under different titles (until now these sen-tences were mainly referred to as “On the Soul”). SGP consists of two main blocks of sentences represented by two gnomic antholo-gies, the “Dublin Florilegium”, consisting of short maxims, and the “Tur ʿAbdin Florilegium”, including longer expositions in moral philosophy, or “counsels”. The first introductory part of the book not only describes the textual witnesses of SGP, but also surveys all other extant gnomic materials attributed to Greek philosophers and poets (the Seven Sages, Homer, Plato, Menander, Pythagoras, Theano, etc.), including gnomologia, florilegia, exempla, and doxo-graphy. Two chapters of the introduction focus on the pedagogical use of the gnomic materials mainly connected with the new Chris-tian forms of rhetorical education based on the study of the Bible and on the texts of Basil of Caesarea and Gregory of Nazianzus. The second part of the book contains a critical edition of SGP on the basis of 15 manuscripts.

ISHO‘DAD OF MERW. COMMENTARY ON THE GOSPEL OF JOHNEdition of the Syriac text (T) and English translation (V)

HOFSTRA J.D.

Isho‘dad of Merw, Bishop of the East Syrian Church in Hedatta, wrote his commentaries on the books of the Old and New Testa-ment around 850 A.D. His work constitutes one of the most impor-tant and extensive exegetical collections within the East Syrian Church. From 1911 to 1916 Margaret D. Gibson published a text edition and an English translation of the New Testament Part. Developments in the area of manuscript tradition, the discovery of new sources and the many deficiencies in Gibson’s work, made a new text edition and translation necessary. The starting point has been taken in Isho‘dad’s commentary on the Gospel of St. John. This gave the opportunity to trace in Isho‘dad’s commentary the influences of the work of Theodore of Mopsuestia, whose commen-tary on the Gospel of St. John has survived in the Syriac language. Volume 671 (Textus) offers a Syriac text edition based on 15 man-uscripts. In the Introduction these manuscripts and their mutual relationship are described. Volume 672 (Versio) contains a descrip-tion of Isho’dad’s life, a study of the sources used by him, and a translation. The volumes include a survey of Gibson’s errata, an orthographical index and an index of biblical citations and Greek terms quoted.

DIE BRIEFE 40 UND 41 DES OSTSYRISCHEN PATRIARCHEN TIMOTHEOS I.Kritische Ausgabe des syrischen Textes (T) und deutsche Übersetzung (V)

HEIMGARTNER M.

STUDIES IN ORIENTAL LITURGYProceedings of the Fifth International Congress of the Society of Oriental Liturgy, New York, 10-15 June 2014

GROEN B., GALADZA D., GLIBETIC N., RADLE G. (eds)

This volume contains sixteen papers on Eastern Christian liturgies: on their origins, historical developments, current practices, and their theologies. The subjects range from initiation in Syriac Christianity to the origins of the feast of the Ark of the Covenant, and to the Book of Hours of Armenia and Jerusalem; from Coptic liturgy to an ancient Ethiopian catechesis with liturgical comments, and to the Palestinian Typicon; from Byzantine vesting rituals to the rite of marriage in the South-Slavic tradition, and to the fifteenth-century Archbishop Symeon of Thessalonica; from present-day Romanian liturgy ‘between Greeks and Slavs’ to Catholic veneration of Russian saints, and to the American Orthodox monastery of New Skete; and from the interactive web 2.0 to Robert Taft looking back on his impressive academic career. Thus the Society of Oriental Liturgy, dedicated to inquiries into the manifold worship traditions of the Eastern Churches, once more demonstrates that its research is an attractive cornucopia.

THE SPIRIT, HERMENEUTICS, AND DIALOGUESBIERINGER R., DE MEY P., IBITA M.S., POLLEFEYT D. (eds)

The second half of the 20th century witnessed unprecedented enthusiasm for inner-Christian ecumenical dialogue as well as Chris-tian-Jewish dialogue. However, at the time of the transition from the 20th to the 21st century the dialogues were marked by disillu-sionment and disappointment due to the fact that not enough pro-gress was experienced with regard to concrete everyday issues. More-over theoretical points of disagreement remained obstacles for a real mutual understanding, the major ones being the interpretation of certain Biblical passages (esp. John 14:6 and 15:26) and their impli-cations for Christology and the theology of the Trinity. This book explores “new hermeneutics for renewed dialogues.” To use a met-aphor found in the book, the contributions of this volume are sug-gesting “new songs” with regard to the dialogues by proposing a future-oriented hermeneutics and a shift from an exclusive focus on Christology to including Pneumatology and thus the doctrine of the Trinity. By so doing the authors and editors intend to offer a new impetus and a new élan in Roman Catholic-Eastern Orthodox as well as Christian-Jewish dialogues. The co-authors of this book contribute pneumatological hermeneutical insights from their respective Protestant, (Christian) Orthodox, Roman Catholic and Jewish perspectives.

FROM EPHPHATHA TO DEAF PASTORSDeaf Pastoral Ministry

BROESTERHUIZEN M.

In the past, pastoral care with the deaf generally took place from the care perspective of hearing pastors: deafness as a disability that deserved charity and a missionary effort towards integration of deaf people into a hearing society. This book proposes a liberatory pas-toral model that starts from deaf people’s self-experience, Deaf Cul-tures, and Sign Language as deaf people’s most natural language: deafness as a way of life. In a deaf way of life, deafness is not an impairment or disability, but a world in its own worth. In this Deaf World deaf people are not passive receivers of pastoral ministry, but its primary agents. Topics treated in this book are: the history of deafness in Western culture, deaf people’s self-experience, a non- dichotomizing view on “impairment,” a theological view on lan-guage, the deaf community as locus theologicus, and Bible transla-tion into Sign Language.

MEN, SPIRITUALITY, AND GENDER- SPECIFIC BIBLICAL HERMENEUTICSKUMMER A.M.

With the rise of feminism, issues of gender have become more important in many walks of life, but the specific problems and chal-lenges faced by men have not attracted much scholarly interest in theology. This book looks at the challenges for men as described in popular and academic publications. Masculinity is understood as the open, performative, and transformative self-project of the individual person. As many contemporary men suffer from pathol-ogies – loneliness, emotional repression, addiction, depression, alien-ation from self and others – that are often rooted in misguided masculinity codes that emphasize self-sufficiency, aggressiveness, and competition, they need to free themselves from such self- expectations and turn towards a spirituality of healing and flourish-ing. The reading of biblical texts can help them. To help men ben-efit from scriptural narratives, the author proposes a new method of biblical interpretation: Readers of biblical texts should pay careful attention to ideology, to the interests that have shaped the text, and to how the text can influence the reader today. Secondly, readers should scrutinize the text for its vision of the future and for messages of hope. Finally, readers should look in the text for instances of, and invitations to, personal change and transformation. This book adds to the tools of modern Biblical exegesis the lens of gender-specific reading strategies for working-age men. Situated in the borderlands of biblical and practical theology, it provides fresh impetus both to exegesis and to the pastoral care of men.

THE TRANSFORMING PRESENCE OF MYSTERYA Perspective of Spiritual Theology

ZAS FRIZ DE COL R.

Spiritual Theology’s journey through these last decades shows an itinerary of development, the fruit of which is an ever more solid identity. This book seeks to present a perspective in that itinerary and in tune with the signs of our times: on one hand, militant secularism and, on the other, a widespread, concrete resurgence of experiences of transcendence. In this sense, I am presenting a path of study organized around five concepts: presence, mystery, transcendence, lived experience, and transformation. In effect, the inner transfor-mation worked by the Presence of Mystery leaves a new knowing, in which the relationship with reality is renewed, since it has expanded and dilated beyond sensible perception, opening the sub-ject up to an unlimited and real horizon of transcendence. The awareness of perceiving a ‘greater reality’ within reality leaves an emotional resonance that teaches a new way of feeling and reacting in the face of sensibly perceived reality.

HOMO THEOMORPHICUS ET THEOPHORICUSA Receptive-Responsive Theory of Spirituality

JASTRZĘBSKI A.

This book explores the broad anthropological foundations of spirit-uality including science, psychology, philosophy, and theology. Human spirituality is an essential topic in both present-day human-istic and scientific debates. Reflection on spirituality leads us to the conclusion that we are formed both as a vessel to receive the grace and presence of God, as well as to be the bearers of God’s image, which is expressed most fully in acts of self-transcendence. In such an approach, the human being emerges as homo theomorphicus et theophoricus. This approach to our nature, finds an equivalent per-spective in our spirituality, resulting in a discovery of its recep-tive-responsive nature. We associate spiritual receptivity with “God-shape-ness”, our state of being formed in the image or likeness of God, that is, theomorphism; our responsiveness engenders “God-bearing-ness”, that is, theophorism. This book is the fruit of extended and intensive research by the author who happens to be a believer. Hence, the last part of it is theological but in its earlier parts it remains faithful to scientific methodology, venturing through neuroscience, psychology and philosophy.

FROM PSYCHOLOGY TO SPIRITUALITY. DE LA PSYCHOLOGIE À LA SPIRITUALITÉMALETTE J., ROVERS M., SUNDARAM L. (eds)

This book explores the diverse dimensions of the links between psy-chology and spirituality. The first section explores the historic evo-lution of these links, sometimes tense, often polysemous but that nevertheless leave few indifferent. The second section explores how the integration of psychology and spirituality can be fostered to deepen the understanding of sexual abuse, couples psychotherapy and ethics. Lastly, the final section presents three empirical studies. These studies researched the links between psychology and spiritual-ity through the lens of three distinct populations: Vietnamese immi-grants, bisexual Christian women and elderly persons. The conclu-sion underlines the importance of using a multidimensional conceptualisation of human beings and considering the psychologi-cal, physical, ethical and spiritual aspects as essential components of being human.

THE MIND OF GOD AND THE WORKS OF NATURELaws and Powers in Naturalism, Platonism, and Classical Theism

ORR J.

Historians of science have long considered the very idea of a law- governed universe to be the relic of a bygone intellectual culture that took it largely for granted that a divine lawmaker existed. Similarly, many philosophers of science today insist that the notion of a law of nature is fraught with implausibly theological assumptions, pre-ferring instead to treat them as theoretical axioms in an optimal description of nature’s regularities, or else as patterns of causal con-nections or powers that are compatible with a naturalistic concep-tion of reality. Yet the metaphor of lawhood has proven more diffi-cult to dislodge than the theistic commitments it once presupposed, not least because it preserves the widespread intuition that the task of scientific inquiry is not to stipulate the difference between a law-ful and an accidental regularity in nature, but to discover it. Taking its cue from the repeated failure to find naturalistic alternatives to divine lawmaking, this book undertakes a retrieval and reappraisal of a high-scholastic philosophy of nature that grounds lawlike regu-larities in the conceptual and causal powers of God and, having done so, concludes that the metaphysical framework of classical the-ism yields a more powerful and parsimonious explanation of the rhythms and patterns of the natural world than its secular rivals.

COMPATIBILIST FREEDOM AND THE PROBLEM OF EVILGILLETT J.A.

Compatibilism has become an increasingly popular position amongst contemporary philosophers. However, within the philosophy of reli-gion the majority of philosophers continue to adopt an incompati-bilist, usually libertarian, view of free will. This book seeks to explore whether it is possible to formulate a coherent compatibilist response to the problem of evil and, if so, whether such a response could help compatibilism to be seen as a viable, or even preferable, alternative to incompatibilism within philosophy of religion.

CARE ETHICSThe Introduction of Care as Political Category

BRUGÈRE F.

Carol Gilligan’s In a Different Voice (1982) demonstrated that women have another way of thinking morality than men. But Gilligan’s book was not only an argument about gender. She also contended that care ethics is an important concept that has too often been neglected. Dispositions and practices of care give rise to a new definition of social connections that takes vulnerability, dependence, and interdependence into consideration. Moreover, a politics of care can be an antidote to new forms of bureaucracy and to the privati-zation of public services. This book is an introduction to the ethics and politics of care from a philosophical point of view.

ARISTOTLE ON LOGIC AND NATURELINDÉN J.-I. (ed.)

The impact of Aristotle cannot be overestimated, covering not only the “first philosophy”, which later was to become “metaphysics”, but several different areas, ranging from ethics and politics to rhetoric and poetry. A special status belongs to the fundamentals of thinking, treated in the logical writings. Another core of Aristotelian philoso-phy concerns the philosophy of nature – issues of life and soul, natural kinds, animal movement, nature in all its aspects, including the translunar sphere of heavenly bodies. The psychology of De anima is part of this philosophy of nature, but at the same time includes a noetic sphere, indicating another dimension of human life, which enables true knowledge and truly virtuous actions. These aspects of Aristotelian philosophy are often studied separately. While there are several important works on Aristotelian logic, ethics and psychology, the aim of the current volume is to offer perspectives on the interrelatedness of these domains.

MEISTER ECKHART, THE GERMAN WORKS: 64 HOMILIES FOR THE LITURGICAL YEAR. 1. DE TEMPOREIntroduction, Translation and Notes

STURLESE L., VINZENT M.

This volume (based on Loris Sturlese’s Italian collection from the year 2014) contains the vernacular texts and English translations of 64 of Eckhart’s German sermons, which can be linked with the cycle of preaching during the liturgical year (De tempore). A second vol-ume, currently in preparation, will be devoted to a further 56 ver-nacular sermons for the feasts of the saints (De sanctis). A further volume will contain Eckhart’s Latin homilies (both De tempore and the few surviving ones De sanctis). Loris Sturlese and Markus Vinzent will thus provide both the entire vernacular and Latin leg-acy of ‘authentic’ homilies, totalling over 100 vernacular and almost 100 Latin sermons. The first volume on the homilies De tempore centres on the time between Advent and Trinity with a major gap in the cycle in the summer time (absent are the weeks V-XV after Trinity Sunday) and gives us Eckhart’s preaching in literary form. As the collection has been reconstructed, it seems to go back to a written, arranged, and to a certain extent textualized and published opus, most likely by Eckhart himself. The corpus of sermons that have been relocated into their liturgical place from the critical edi-tion of Kohlhammer represents a work situated midway between oral texts and their professional editor. It opens a door to students and interested readers into the world of Eckhart’s liturgical preach-ing, helped by a thorough general introduction, short prefaces to all homilies and notes.

DURANDI DE SANCTO PORCIANO SCRIPTUM SUPER IV LIBROS SENTENTIARUM. BUCH I, DD. 18-35PERRONE M., RETUCCI F.

IUSTI LIPSI EPISTOLAE. PARS IX: 1596PEETERS H.

Iusti Lipsi Epistolae. Pars IX contains the correspondence of 1596 and is edited by Hugo Peeters. Lipsius is finally feeling more at home in his native country: his financial situation has approved thanks to the title of historiographus regius involving an annuity of 1,000 florins, and the arrival of several contubernales, promising students accommodated at his home who will receive an almost constant training in Latin. The first part of the year finds him still occupied by the final details of the Poliorcetica, a sequel to De militia Romana expounding on war engines and siege tactics, which he ded-icated to Prince Bishop Ernest of Liège. Near the end of the year he was focusing on a new project, the Monita et exempla politica, a practical sequel to the political theories elaborated in the Politica, which he intended to dedicate to Albert of Austria, the newly arrived governor of the Netherlands.

‘IUS COMMUNE GRAECO-ROMANUM’Essays in Honour of Prof. Dr. Laurent Waelkens

DRUWÉ W., DECOCK W., ANGELINI P., CASTELEIN M. (eds)

As a tribute to their academic teacher and to further his interests, the students of Prof. Dr. Laurent Waelkens collected fifteen schol-arly contributions on ius commune graeco-romanum, written by academics from eleven different countries, mainly but not exclu-sively from Eastern Europe. The book consists of three main parts. In the first part, four authors focus on the Graeco-Roman law in the Roman Empire itself. In the second part, five contributions concern the influence of Graeco-Roman law outside of the Byzantine Empire. The six contributions of the third and final part study the impact of the Western ius commune tradition on Eastern European countries. Thus, the volume highlights the continued importance of the study of Roman law for the understanding of our common pan-European legal heritage.

AFTERLIFE OF ANTIQUITYAnton Springer (1825-1891) on the Classical Tradition

LAMERS H.

This essay deals with the early history of the notion of an ‘afterlife of antiquity’ as a metaphor for thinking about antiquity’s continued presence in later periods. Nachleben der Antike is often associated with Aby Warburg and Renaissance art but was first applied to the classical tradition of the Middle Ages by the Czech-German histo-rian Anton Heinrich Springer (1825–1891). His provocative essay on the subject, first published in 1862, is a very early attempt to emancipate the classical tradition from strait-laced classicism and to see it as a historical problem. Springer’s approach anticipated some important later trends in understanding antiquity’s continued pres-ence and significance. Afterlife of Antiquity returns something of the original resonance to Springer’s idea and sheds light on its signifi-cance in the history of scholarship. Recognizing some of the theo-retical tensions inherent in Springer’s discussion, the current work examines how the notion of an afterlife of antiquity was embedded in the author’s wider interest in artistic tradition and how he used it as a polemical concept targeting both anti-classicizing Romanticist and traditional humanist views of medieval culture. This issue of Studies in Iconology also includes the first English translation of Springer’s Das Nachleben der Antike im Mittelalter, a largely forgot-ten classic of humanities scholarship, read and admired by Aby Warburg and Erwin Panofsky.

ENCYCLOPÉDIE DES PYGMÉES AKA III: LEXIQUE ALPHABÉTIQUE FRANÇAIS-AKATHOMAS J.M.C., BAHUCHET S., EPELBOIN A., FÜRNISS S. (éds)
