Dear Member Colleagues,
We are very happy to bring to you our next issue of our quarterly Bulletin covering the period of January-March 2017.
We are thankful to you for your appreciation of the quality/contents of this popular INSSAN Bulletin issues.
This issue mainly covers the recently concluded 27th
National Convention at Jamshedpur. Incidently this was the 7th NC of INSSAN at Jamshedpur !
The next ie. 28th National Convention will be at Aurangabad. HQ and Aurangabad Chapter will jointly organise the same.
The 27th NC was a unique experience for it’s contents and participation. EIC did a wonderful job ! A special session which took place on the 2nd day was very well received by one and all and was also appreciated .The session was titled as “ Management’s and Union’s role in Employee Involvement “The management’s role was very aptly elaborated by none other than ex Chairman-EIC Chapter
and VP of Tata Steel Mr.A.M.Misra whereas the Union’s participation was very explained by President of Tata Employees Union - Mr. Ravi Prasad. The most liked aspect was the honesty with which the speakers spoke ! The gist of their speeches has been summerised by Mr. Zende which is part of this issue.
INSSAN CONGRATULATES ALL THE WINNERS! The balance results of INSSAN CONTEST 2016 are included in this issue.
The feedback of the convention and report of the same/analysis of activities etc. has been done very well in details by EIC and is part of this issue.

DID YOU KNOW?
The electric iron was invented by New Yorker Henry W. Seely and patented on 6 June 1882.Seely’s invention was somewhat ahead of his time, since America’s first power station did not begin generating electricity until three months later.
The idea of removing the creases from clothes is centuries old. It began with smoothing tools made of wood, glass or marble and the process improved with the addition of heat: heavy stones would be warmed on the hearth and used to press the clothes. The earliest mention of a laundry iron dates from the 17th century-a smooth block of iron with a handle was a much better tool than a heavy stone. The first irons were heated next to an open fire, but later developments included hollow irons, which could be filled with embers or charcoal to keep them hot, and by the 19th century it was standard practice to heat the iron on a stovetop.
Henry W. Seely [USA] realised that there was another way to heat the footplate of an iron, by using an electric current. In 1882 he invented the electric iron, which was heated by an arc of electricity bridging the gap between two carbon rods set in the hollow base in the iron. Seely improved on this in 1883 with a much safer, cordless electric iron. This worked on the same principle as modern cordless irons-it was plugged into a special stand to heat up and then was removed from the stand to enable the ironing to be done without the encumbrance of a cable. However, it was expensive and unreliable, which couples with the fact that very few people had an electricity supply, meant that it was not a commercial success.
Electric irons gained acceptance as they gradually improved, and then in 1926 New York dry cleaning company Eldec [USA] introduced the first domestic steam iron. Like Seely’s pioneering iron before it,
the Eldec iron was ahead of its time. Technology had not reached the point where the steam iron could be made safe enough or reliable enough to be an immediate success, but the idea has since proved to be sound and by the end of the century more than 80 % of electric irons sold were steam irons.
Today’s irons have Teflon-coated non-stick footplates, but in Elizabethan times beeswax and candle greases were often
used to help the iron slide over linen and other fabrics.
In 2001 Corpo Nove [ Italy ] invented a wrinkle-free shirt, known as the Oricalco, made of titanium-alloy fibres interwoven with nylon. The fabric reshapes when heated, and simply blowing the wrinkled shirt with a hairdryer dissolves any creases.
Trousers with a permanent crease were invented by CSIRO in Australia and first produced in 1957,using a process that was patented under the name Si-ro-set.
Electric Iron Timeline
1882 Henry W.Seely [ USA ] invents the electric iron, heated by a carbon arc. [ A carbon arc iron is invented independently in France shortly afterwards ]One of the problems with carbon arc irons was that pieces of red hot carbon often showered the clothes, burning myriad tiny holes.
1883 Seely invents a safer, cordless electric iron.1891 GEC and Crompton [ both England ] sell
electric irons with flexible cords to connect them to a light socket.
1926 Elde Co. [ USA ] introduces the first domestic electric steam iron.
1936 The first successful thermostatically controlled electric iron goes on sale.

THE ROLE OF MANAGEMENT & UNION IN PROMOTING EMPLOYEE INVOLVEMENT
TalkbyPresidentofTataEmployee’sUnionMr.RaviPrasadandMr.A.M.Misra,Ex.V.P.ofTataSteel.
ThesessionwaschairedbyMr.DeepakKamath,ViceChairman,ofEIC.Tomarkequalityboththespeakerswerewearingsimilardress,firstMr.RaviPrasadspokeandthenMr.A.M.Misra.
Mr. Ravi PrasadHe opens his speech with INSSAN-अच छ्े आदमी बनो (Be a better man) is a heritage and culture of Tata companies. He said, our union is 96 years old & we work for betterment of company & progress of com-pany’s workers. Union and Management are like railway track though they are different they have to move together. In Tata Steel Suggestion Scheme was started in 1932 and Suggestion Scheme Committee was established in 1945. In 1956 historical agree-ment between Union and Management was signed in which it was agreed that there will be no retrench-ment of workers. Even today also, differences and problems are sorted out referring/using the same document. My company is 109 years young com-pany because it is running Suggestion Scheme. The Suggestion Scheme is documented very well. We have very good contribution of workers in Suggestion Scheme. The crux of Suggestion Scheme is that the suggestors must get quick feedback as their sugges-tions are for improving system and they also suggest how to improve and eases their jobs. For them not award, but implementation of their idea on shop floor is very important. Their small, small suggestions im-prove their skills. Suggestions need to be implemented and should see improvement. In my opinion, Sugges-tion Scheme also needs continuous improvement.”
Mr. A.M. Misra Mr. Misra said, “I am involved with INSSAN since 1990. Now we must go beyond suggestion, we must focusonBECREATIVE,BEPRODUCTIVE.Mr.RaviPrasadsaidmanagementislikerailwaytrackwhichnever meet. To me now, it is high time that they must meet. This is like captain and players in a game there is no distinction in them. (भछेदभाव नजरमें भी नही आना चाहहयछे.) Now owners are not managers but managers are employees, people are educated and are thinkers. Hence we must have direct relations, middle man is not required. Tradition is changing. Army rule, command and control are not required. Now we
will have union less and manager less organizations. We need empowered people with flat organization. Hierarchy should be reduced, no पु्, पु् मॅनछेजमेंट as this type of management take long time to take decisions and in the process cost is increased due to this. He mentioned Morning Star Company from USA with 400 employees where there are no levels & no promotions. Everybody is working with full responsibility & trust. No instructions. Take example of our kids now, they are deciding everything themselves and are doing well. Why not company works in the same way? In this way of companyworking Unions will be in danger but management also will face same danger. इसमछे यनुनयनको खतरा है, वसैछे वयवस्ापनको भी| Hisadvicewasto‘BeCreative!’‘BeProductive!’ Incurrent situationeveryone is lookingfor INNOVATION, EFFICIENCY & EFFECTIVENESS. I need not elaborate INNOVATION as this convention is about the very subject of innovation. Efficiency relates to skill and Effectiveness is doing the right thing.
Now if you look at Japan’s existing status Japan is becoming stagnant as new thinking is not coming. If you don’t do something new, somebody will do it.LookatIsrael.Whynotwedonewthings?Ifindpeople are even afraid to dreaming big. We must set aggressive target make Cassel and provide them foundation. I feel failure teaches more than success. Education from failure will click success and then Parivartanwillcome.Productivityisachildofcreativ-ity. Less productivity results in more cost. For improv-ing productivity break through ideas are required. Increased productivity will reduce cost & will bring more and more customers and salary will increase. Through increase in outsourcing product quality has improved but break through has not achieved.
He narrated good story how serving tea in facto-ries started. When industries started there was very heavy work and before starting work, workers use to have few sips of drinks, दो घोट लछेकछे ही काम शुरू
13
करतछे छ्े| to avoid this they started serving compul-sory tea. As a result accidents reduced and produc-tionincreased.Don’tliveinpastperformance.Don’tbe contained. सतक्क हो जाय| Gone are the days of Dinosaur Management. Now you have to takefast decisions and more and more responsibility. Morning Star model needs to get extended i.e. flat
organizations will only survived.
Mr. Deepak Kamath aptly summarized the session.
