WELCOMEThe 2016 South Carolina Environmental Conference (SCEC) marks over a quarter-century of collaboration between the SC Section of the American Water Works Association (SCAWWA) and the Water Environment Association of SC (WEASC) in hosting the largest, best attended environmental conference in the southeast.

The theme for this year’s conference is “A Better South Carolina through Better Water.” The theme represents what is most important to us as water professionals and aligns with the mission of both organizations. If our state is to continue to prosper, we must protect our water resources - from rivers, lakes and estuaries to support human life, economic growth, thriving ecosystems, and even those ocean-going apex predators.

If you have never been involved in the planning that goes into each SCEC, you may not understand the level of effort that it takes from our staff and volunteers. In a word this effort is extraordinary. Once again, the Conference Management Committee (CMC) has been working tirelessly since April to plan another great conference. This year, the CMC set a goal to continue the growth of the SCEC by eclipsing last year’s attendance record of 1520, while maintaining our focus to provide quality education, exposure to conference exhibitors and sponsors, and opportunities to network with fellow water professionals. To facilitate this, we have made a few changes in the conference schedule this year to increase exposure to award recipients; to provide for more events within the Exhibit Hall; and to allow more time for conference goers to mingle, fellowship and relax while also receiving a quality educational experience. It is our hope that these changes will continue to allow SCEC to grow and improve based on what our members, attendees and vendors want and expect.

Opening Session at this year’s SCEC will be a treat. The keynote speaker will be Chris Fischer, Founder and Expedition Team Leader for OCEARCH, the organization that is leading the way in groundbreaking shark research. In fact, they collaborate with SCDNR scientists here in South Carolina. Chris will highlight the shark tracking research of OCEARCH off the coast of South Carolina, shark migration patterns along the East Coast, how what we do as water professionals impacts the marine ecosystem and how they are working to ‘replace fear with facts’! The OCEARCH team will stay with us and will have a booth to provide more information about their work and some shark swag. Mary Lee or one of her shark pals may even make an appearance! We are especially looking forward to the Grand Finale which will take us back to yesteryear when we were young kids vacationing at Myrtle Beach and playing at the arcade along the boardwalk. Great food, nostalgic arcade games, and beach music will be fun and remind us of the exciting memories we made when we were young and running wild along the boardwalk.

Please make your plans to join us at the 2016 SCEC as we strive to make “A Better South Carolina through Better Water.” We’ll see you in March in Myrtle Beach!

The Boardwalk – We’ll be Having Some Fun!”

This year’s Grand Finale Event will bring the most iconic place in Myrtle Beach – the Boardwalk – right to the comfort of the Sheraton Ballroom.

After being destroyed in 1954 by Hurricane Hazel, in 2010 the city invested $6.4 million to open this 1.2 mile oceanfront wood-plank walkway right in the heart of Myrtle Beach. The Boardwalk serves this area as a cultural hub with a carnival-style atmosphere accompanied by restaurants, arcades, bars, gift shops, and outdoor concerts and rivals Atlantic City and Coney Island ranking among the top three boardwalks in the US as voted by National Geographic and Travel and Leisure.

Join us Tuesday night as we step back in time and enjoy a night of boardwalk fun, food and libations, and networking, as we bring the 2016 SCEC to a close!

We are pleased to have OCEARCH Founding Chairman and Expedition Leader Chris Fischer as the Keynote Speaker for our Opening Session this year! Chris is an ocean explorer who’s led 23 global expeditions researching great white sharks, tiger sharks and other apex predators to advance conservation and public safety; appeared in 210 episodes of TV on National Geographic Channel, HISTORY, and ESPN; and had over 7,500 global media stories written about him and his non- profit OCEARCH. OCEARCH is a recognized world leader in generating critical scientific data related to tracking (telemetry) and biological studies of keystone marine species such as great white sharks, in conjunction with conservation outreach and education at a measurable global scale. OCEARCH shares real-time data through OCEARCH’s Global Shark Tracker, inspires current and future generations of explorers, scientists, and stewards of the ocean, and enables leading researchers and institutions to generate previously unattainable data. You won’t want to miss this Opening Session and a chance to learn more about OCEARCH!

GRAND FINALE

WEASC BYLAWS PROPOSED AMENDMENTPROPOSED AMENDMENT OF THE WEASC BYLAWS SECTION NO. 7.7.1.1 and 8.1.4 (to be voted on at the Annual Meeting to be held at the SCEC, Wednesday, March 16, 2016). The Executive Committee recommends the following Bylaws amendments to include high school students as well as full- or part-time students in the membership classification of Association Student Members and to reduce the membership dues for student members to $0.00. This will allow our Stockholm Junior Water Prize participants and Operator in Training high school students to be classified as Association Student Members. In order to be consistent with the WEF classification of Student Members (Section 7.5.1), the wording in 7.7.1.1 is changed to meet the qualifications of Section 7.5.1. Student Members and Association Student Members will be exempt from dues. This action is expected to promote participation in Student Chapters as well as increase student’s interest in the WEASC. 7.7.1.1 Student Members of the Association may include any student of a high school or an institution of higher learning pursuing courses or training which would lead to a career in the water quality control field. Association Student memberships are valid only while enrolled as a full-time high school student or meet the qualifications of Section 7.5.1. 8.1.4 Honorary Members, and Life Members, Student Members and Association Student Members shall be exempt from dues payable to the Associa-tion; provided, however, that dues for membership in additional Districts shall be paid.
