Old Paradians advanced to the Preliminary Final with a 21 point win over De La Salle at Elsternwick Parklast Sunday.

O .P.'s led at every change but were given a shock in the third quarter when De La Salle mounted a challengewith 6 goals to get to within 4 points at the last break . It was nip and tuck in the last quarter and not until the20 minute mark that a B re ndan Exton goal quickly followed by one from Michael Skerritt that sealed the game.

it was a good effort by O .P.'s because they looked vulnerable at the last break and it would not have surprisedhad they been runover.

O.P.'s first half ascendency was due to the early brilliance of Dominic Spillane who seemed to be looseon the wing, half forward Tony Woods who is a very slippery customer, Brian Grills in the ruck and the "come-back kid" centre half forward Dale McCann .

De La's comeback was inspired by ruck Mick G reene and centre half back Mick Deveson whilst Mike Knuppelon the wing was a fine player.

But in the end, despite four goals to each of De La's Peter Rennie and Peter Waldron it was the O.P.'sdefence which stood firm thanks to Tony Canavan (centre half back), Damien Reeves (full back) and BrendanConsidine on the flank .

Best and fairest winner Frank Gleeson was a busy player though he only bagged one goal for the day .De La's other great triers were on-ball players Gary Connolly and Mark Lowe. One other player who at times

showed great skill was De La's Craig Wright . He kicked one brilliant goal but possibly could have had a couplemore . He was good to watch .

I think the result was a fair one. De La on the day weren't quite good enough . I was very impressed withO.P.'s Gerard Sholly at three quarter time and indeed I thought Stephen Rae said all the right things to hisboys at the first break . Well done !

I only tipped one out of three last week . Can I improve?

C SECTION REVIEW BY ROSS BOOT H

It was a perfect day for football last Saturday when I arrived at Northcote to witness the C Section PreliminaryFinal . Monash had a goal on the board when I arrived but shortly after O .M.'s Chris Elstoft took a toweringmark in the square and goaled . It looked like it was going to be a good game and it was .

O.M .'s played a very tentative first quarter. Perhaps they were expecting a bit of a coast seeing that they hadthrashed Monash last time round . But I don't think so - it was more Monash's fierce takcling that upset O .M : s .Monash went to a four goal lead half way through the second quarter but O .M.'s began to get back into itand trailed by just 9 points at half time.

VAFA representative teams have enjoyedthe comfort of wool for the last three seasons .

Players like Hampton Rover's DavidRogerson seen here in the new Woolblendmarkjumper for season 1987, and Ormond's PhillipKingston wearing the Woolblendmark jumperworn in the 1986 State Games, enjoy thefee ling of wool every week because the VAFAis one of a growing number of associationswho have made the change toWoolblendmark jumpers .

They've made that changebecause they know that woolprovides maximum comfortwhether players are performingin hot or cold conditions .

Alright Monash settle down . Todays your really big day. Nevertheless congratulations to Coach Brian Ford, skipper Peter Forbes and all the team on their great win over O .M's and the promotion to B Section next sea-son . If you've made anyone happy with that fighting win it was certainly well known Monash identity and stal-wa rt Professor Keith Frearson .

Actually it wasn't my best selection effort, nor Ross Booth's for that matter, as Marcellin was our only success. So to the Old Paradians especially coach Gerard Sholly and his team who were not given much show in mostquarters, well played, and with players of the calibre of Paul Considine, Ted Flynn, John Atta & Steve Extonto return (although I wonder where) O.P.'s can approach the preliminary final with a quiet confidence . You canbet Ormond & Old Xaverians will well realize the best route to the Grand Final will not be via O.P's and thePrelim . However more of that later.

Ross has written an excellent preview of the O.M's debacle or rather the Monash comeback so a brief lookat De La and Parkside's exit is also warranted .

Both clubs have been regular finalists in recent years and both produced great fightbacks at various stagesof last week's semi . Both came in the third quarter and both looked poised at the final break to go right onwith it . However the effort eventually told and O.P's and the Eagles live to fight another day. De La were slowto start and never able to bridge the 5 goal gap O .P's opened up. Apart from Peter Rennie & Peter Waldro ntheir forwards were ineffective although young Craig Wright and at times Mick Knuppel made exciting andrewarding forward forays.

After a slow start veterans Mick Deveson & Mick Greene were as inspirational as ever and Dick Williams,Adrian O'Keefe & Peter Green were others to catch the eye . At De La (and elsewhere) fourth is not good enoughalthough Col Glover and his club recognize that Old Pardians were too good and deserved winners last Sun-day. Thanks De La for 1987.

Parkside, hard hit by injuries which attributed to its four successive losses and departure from Premiershipfight has again to lament on what might have been . Since promotion to B Section for 1984 it has not missedthe finals and was well placed in 1985 to reach the pinnacle of A Section . Marcellin blocked the way then asit did last week but you can bet Tom Johnston and his Club will be back for another try next season . I hopethey retain Rod Oborne who did such a fine job for them in his first season as coach . They will also need torecruit and must push even harder for an Under 19 tam, although they certainly cannot be accused of endeavourin that area.

Marcellin Coach, Neil Le Lievre, is the quiet achiever, although I'm sure I heard him shout during his 3/4time address last Saturday. His senior players rallied magnificently in that vital final quarter especially Tony Paatsch,Andy Cullinan, Dick Ebe rt , Ga ry Petroff & Tony Amad .

Whether or not they can go on and return to A Section and repeat its 1985 Premiership is not only up to those5 but the whole club !

And now to Saturday and the C Section Grand Final :Kew has had the week's break and is raring to go . Its last Grand Final was in B Section in 1983 when it lostto Bulleen-Temp . Current Captain Coach Brett Burden was a member of that losing side and doesn't enjoybeing reminded of it . Neither would Joey Busuttil, Tony Peric, Mark McColl, Rocco Zerbi or Con Haralam-bopoulos and with the supremacy it has shown over Monash in the last two meetings, where wins by 68 and95 points were recorded, Kew are the undisputed favourites .

They must of course be guarded against over-confidence as Monash is quite obviously a tight knit groupwho almost enjoy the world (and me) being against it. That astute judge of Amateur Football, Noel Rundlewas impressed with the 'Ashes tackling and running . They possess a number of medium sized players withthe dedication and determination to match it with the Brias, Zerbis, Busutt ils, O'Kaylis & Cavanaghs. Howeverthey too must guard against the satisfaction of promotion which is after all only second prize, or is it? Monash

;vill need big games from Baring, Cornwell & Forbes who will enjoy centre half forward at Elsternwick Park .All at Monash have been singing the praises of defender John Quin and centreman Jamie Sturges whoseclash with the Kew Skipper Brett Burden will have a decided bearing on the game. I do not expect eithersideto fall for the trap of being too "hyped" up. Indeed I'm informed that Monash came out early last week kickedthe ball around for 15 minutes, in marked contrast to the 0. M's, and then were quickly into stride when the gamebegan .

I'm going for Kew whose record during the season speaks for itself . It thoroughly eclipsed Monash in thesecond semi a fortnight ago and has the ideal blend of youth and experience . Above all alse the "Browns"really want this flag, as the last time an unfurling took place at Victoria Park was back in 1980 following its 1979success against St. Kilda CBC . Monash will be better than its previous effort but Kew who are not only better, might want success that little bit more !

In B Section the selection is quite easy - it's St . Bernards, who were deserved minor premiers having beatnall comers including Therry & Marcellin in the run to the finals .

A quick glance of the B Section vote count tells us that Mick O'Dea, Vin Comito & Mark Mahady havehad consistent seasons and St . Bernards will be looking at this trio for plenty of drive .

Both sides have plenty of talent down their respective goal to goal lines where Therry skipper Ter ry Quinwill be expected to hold St. Bernard spearhead John Pearson and vice captain Gerard Biddlestone will cer-tainly have his hands full with Paul Hogan . The centre line dashes promise plenty of excitement . Mark Mahadywill probably pick up Paul Crotty who also polled well in the B & F. Both these players should be pushing forinterstate honours next season with the 18th AAFC Carnival in Launceston as the carrot . In the pivot Greg Ny-man who must surely win Therry's best first year player is up against John Federico. Nyman's strength andexperience will give him the edge although Andrew Nathan should break even with Therry's DavidWrigglesworth .

Steve Gibson & Matt O'Rourke who is a brother of North O.B .'s centreman Steve, will combine to formTherry's main avenue to goal . However St . Bernards defence lead by Mick O'Dea, the accomplished GaryMcAllister, Maurie Sullivan, Frank Monaghan & Kev Mahady are as good as there is and will be a majorreason for the St . Bernard's ultimate success today .

The ruck duels will be interesting with Steve Reidy likely to hve an edge over John Klaaysen, but Vin Comi-to will prove too sharp for young Jason Reddick .

I'm sure Therry will be worthy challengers, but the big St . Bernards crowd and the sides overall approachto football under Frank Melican will have the club back in A Section by 5 p.m . tonight .

To the A Section Second Semi and what a game awaits us tomorrow between Ormond & Old Xaverians.Ormond finished the season as top dog and in most minds Premiership favourite despite losing to Old Xaveri-ans twice during the season . Both sides will be at full strength and both will have appreciated the weeks break .Both sides will have had selection problems . Will Ormond risk Craig Clark who managed to play the last 2Reserve games following a long break from the game and will the Xavs take a punt on Nick Wilton who I'mtold took 14 marks in the Reserves narrow win over North O .B . last week?

My belief is that neither will play, although Clark will certainly line up in the Reserves where another goodgame would almost certainly see him return for either the Grand or dare I say it Preliminary final!

Anticipating the selection of both sides has been a great challenge and Ross Booth and I have altered ou ropinion considerably since our first attempt at midnight on the back of a serviette in John Bakers pub a month ago!

On paper Xavs look stronger in the air an area I thought Old Paradians showed up in their narrow loss tothe 'Monds a fortnight ago . However Ormond look faster and I believe they play Elsternwick Park a little better .

Across the centre, always vital at 'The Park' the clash between exciting youngsters Paul Nankervis & AntonyCallan will not only be a highlight but the outcome of this battle and that between Dermot Dann & Phil King-ston will have a decided bearing on the result.

In the centre Mick Atkins will prove stronger than Ormond's Paul Sutherland but he lacks his dash andability to take a really big mark, although his creative handball is a big plus for the Red & Blacks . I lean to the'Monds to hold sway here.

Up forward for Ormond Paul Schuhkra ft will line up on Xavs Geoff Greetham . He will receive plenty of sup-port from one Phil Mehrten leaving either Anthony Roe or Joey Young to pounce on any loose balls . Its nota bad line for Ormond although Xavs who are rapt in Chris Mo rtenson and have absolute faith in Nick Burneare pretty confidence their trio will restrict the Ormond soring . Across the hanf back line John Cu rtain & Mur-ray Vrcoe are courageous and attacking half backs who will provide plenty of support for Steve King whohas the big task of minding Mark McDonald who is the lynch pin of the Ormond forward line. Should McDonaldget on top Danny Corcoran may be forced to move Peter Cu rtain from ruck roving to mind him, althougheither Greetham or Burne could also play there. Both coaches McA rt hur-Allen (Ormond) & Corcoran (O .X .)have kept pace with the modern trend of moving players and making changes and Old Xaverians may be alittle more versatile in this area . Time will tell .

Page 5: OFFICIAL JOURNAL OF THE REGISTERED FOR POSTING AS A

Whereas Ormond's full forward line is its main strength, Xav's differ in that its half forward line of Carlin, Su m .mers & Beattie is its real strength, although it does not underestimate Steve Cu rtain . David McDonald w.liprove a most worthy opponent for Mark Summers . He will give away height but make up for it with his leapand quick recovery. He works in well with his Captain Russel Barnes who will wear Vaughan Carlin like aglove. Should be an encounter worth watching, which leaves us with the unheralded Paul Forsythe to watchXavs ruck rovers Ma rtin Beattie & Peter Cu rtain . Forsythe is another in this Ormond side of whom there hasnot been much fan fare . He hasn't player VFL U19's or Reserves, would have no illusions as to his ability butwould know exactly what is required of him and absolutely Iloves playing in the Seniors for Ormond . I like Or-mond's full back line of Brett Connell, Brad Nash and the versatile and widely regarded Sco tt Taylor. Con.nell is in the Forsythe mold, Nash has had a great season and uses his uncanny anticipation and excellentdisposal to great advantage and Taylor could end up in the ruck, Full or centre half back, or any key position .Phil Callil who may be a permanent forward pocket will worry him for pace, but not much else, and if Nashfinds Steve Cu rt ain's aerial strength a problem, Taylor won't .

In the ruck Laurie Meehan & Paul McDonald should break even, but the Ormond small men Ma rt in Tobin& Paul Cox are more dangerous than their Xav opponents because they kick hard goals .

Both sides have a wealth of talent and experience on the interchange which was the hardest area of selectionfor Ross and I .

Here's how we see them lining up .

I'm going for Ormond in spite of Xavs victories during the year. They have been more consistent than theXavs who can be quite brilliant but also quite ordinary as they lapse in concentration and commitment . Ormondare a bit more settled, fear defeat more and won't panic if they get into trouble - instance thir fight back againstO.Ps a fortnight ago. Persistence was the word I was looking for and Ormond have been renowned for it overmany years .

Here's to a really great final and good luck to both sides and the Umpys .Today selections, Ormond, St . Bernards, Kew, Old Ivanhoe, State Bank, Aquinas.

Everyone at Lat robe Uni Football Club would liketo congratulate Joe "Magic" Tucci on playing his100th game in the Reserves Grand Final today . Joewho has been around the club for about 7 years, leftto play with Coburg Amateurs in 1985. He cameback when needed in 1986 and has been a valua-ble player at training and in games. He is also on thecommittee and works hard planning our social events .Good Luck on your 100th game Joe . Let's make itan good one!!

KID AT HEARTWatching Old Xaverians and Scotch in their last

game I noticed Doug Atkinson had a black armban d

A quick check of all the other Old Xav players rev-ealed no other arm bands.

After the game, which was a hectic encounter, Iasked Doug "Why the armband?" He looked at mewith dismay "Brian it is ten years since Elvis died".

REVIEW OF MATCHES PLAYED AUGUST 29, 198 7

D SECTION PRELIMINARY FINALSt Kevin's, with greater steadiness in attack, proved me a poor judge when they defeated an inaccurate OldMentonians by twenty three points to qualify for today's Grand Final and for C Section in 1988 . St . Kevin'swin was a just reward for their overall 1987 form when they have led the section for most of the season . Welldone St . Kevins .E SECTION PRELIMINARY FINA LCongratulations West Brunswick on your great win and consequent return to D Section after one season inE . The club under President Ken Frencham and coach Les White have come a long way this season. I wonderwhat Ken thinks of my judgement now? The game was an evenly contested one in which Old Essendon Gram-marians comparative inaccuracy told against them in the final analysis as they went down by eighteen points .Old Essendon are not the first club to lose both finals after heading the ladder (nor will they be the last) . Theymust consolidate and come back next season determined to reach the Grand Final .

F SECTION PRELIMINARY FINA LAfter an even first half during which each side dominated long passages of play Aquinas was able to turn theirthree point lead at the long interval into a thirty two point victory. St . And re w's accuracy in front of goal helpedlessen this margin because Aquinas had nineteen scoring shots to St . Andrews ten after half time . Congratula-tions to St . Andrews on their win and consequent promotion . Well done to St . And rews who "fought the goodfight" this season when they emerged as a force.

UNDER 19 SECTION 1 FIRST SEMI FINALOld Paradian's Green showed what a poor judge I am when aided by a tall ruckman they moved the ball for-ward quickly and directly contrary to my predictions. This game was of a high standard although the Paradiansnever allowed Bulleen Templestowe into the game as they built their lead each quarter before winning by fiftypoints .

UNDER 19 SECTION 2 FIRST SEMI FINALThe first quarter of this game was a low scoring one in which the defence of both sides was on top. Chomleyof the Blacks distinguished himself with three towering marks as Haileyburian attacks were thwarted. Gradual-ly Old Haileybu ry asserted themselves and went on to win the game by twenty one points .

UNDER 19 SECTION 2 SECOND SEMI FINA LSection leaders Therry asserted their superiority over Old Scotch and ran out winners by twenty four pointsto go straight into the Grand Final .UNDER 19 SECTION 3 FIRST SEMI FINA LIvanhoe proved far too strong for Monash Blues at Brighton Beach Oval when the Magpies ran out winnersby sixty points.

UNDER 19 SECTION 3 SECOND SEMI FINA LUncanny accuracy by Whitefriars enabled them to defeat Caulfield Grammarians by thirty one points. Thisresult proved me a poor judge as Whitefriars had won their three home and away games against CaulfieldGrammarians although thirty one points was a greater margin than that between the sides in Round 18 theprevious week .

PREVIEW OF MATCHES TO BE PLAYED SEPTEMBER 5, 1987 .

D SECTION GRAND FINA LOld Ivanhoe and St . Kevin's meet again for the premiership at Bentleigh . Old Ivanhoe won two weeks agoby nine points after each club had won against the other during the season . St . Kevin's, although weakenedby injury, fought back to win last week and certainly today's game will be a hard fought one . Old Ivanhoe canexpect great drive from Best and Fairest winner Mark Dyson while Doddrell has previously proven a worryto St . Kevin's as the wily veteran Lou Hockins. St . Kevins will be hopinq that McKaige, Watkin and the Kerr

Brothers again do well and provide match winning drive . I select Old Ivanhoe to win again and thus win theirsecond senior V.A .F.A . Premiership .

E SECTION GRAND FINA LState Bank and West Brunswick meet for the premiership at Monash University. State Bank have won bothgames this season - by sixty four points in round one and by five points in round ten . West Brunswick hashit top form at the right time and have won six matches in succession since their last defeat in Round 14 (bySt. Bedes) . State Bank's last defeat was on the same day when they lost to Brunswick by thirteen points .Today the Bankers must quieten Buckley who troubled them in each earlier game . Other potential Magpiestars include the Lampard Brothers, Hatzi Staurou and their focal forward McNiece . For the Bankers, Cloke,Dervan, Connelly and their leading goalkicker David Jenkins can be expected to do well and trouble WestBrunswick . I know State Bank played well in the second semi final however West Brunswick played at Monashlast week and given their experience with Royal Park winds, their determination and momentum I select WestBrunswick to win the premiership .F SECTION GRAND FINA LThe season's two leading sides Whitefriars and Aquinas meet for the premiership at Parade College . AlthoughAquinas won both home and away matches Whitefriars won the second semi final by forty eight points . Inthat game Aquinas faltered in the final quarter as frustrations entered their play and Whitefriars kept their mindon the ball . Aquinas coach Hawking was critical of his player's inability to win the ball from the centre in thesemi final and today the players must rectify this situation . Whitefriars players were able to break the Aquinasinside/outside code and thus win the ball during the semi final . Today of course will be a different game andI expect there will be no Aquinas complacency as crept into their game two weeks ago . Given the flexibilityof the Aquinas forward line and their desire to avenge the second semi final result I select Aquinas to win today .

UNDER 19 SECTION 1 SECOND SEMI FINA LOld Xaverians meet Marcellin at Kew in what should be a high standard game . Marcellin won by four pointson May 16 only to discover they played an unregistered player . At Marcellin on July 25 the Xaverians playedthe more direct football and recorded a thirty six point victory. Both sides had a key forward who could influencethe result - Randall ( Marcellin) and McLaughlin (O .X.) . For Marcellin captain F red Battistella sets a goodexample while Hart gives a lot of drive around the pack. For Old Xaverians, Webb, Ber ry and Studde rt canbe relied upon to give solid service . It is hard to go against Old Xaverians because of their superior recordand consequently I select them to win today .

UNDER 19 SECTION 2 SECOND SEMI FINA LOld Haileybu ry and Old Scotch meet at the Ross Grego ry Oval for the right to play off with Therry . OldHaileybu ry must start favourite considering their ninety one point victory on August 22 and their dominanceof play on May 4 when shockingly inaccurate kicking saw Haileybu ry go down by two points . Good playersfor Old Haileybu ry in these games included Lane, Mer re tt and Doran while for Old Scotch their best haveincluded leading goalkicker Ed Whiteside, Weller and Aujard . To win today the Old Haileybu ry players mustgive four quarters of sustained effort and not "travel in the comfort zone" as Max Lyon suggested some of hisplayers did last week . I select Old Haileybu ry to win today .

UNDER 19 SECTION 3, PRELIMINARY FINA LCaulfield Grammarians play Ivanhoe on Oval 4 for the right to challenge Whitefriars next week .CaulfieldGrammarains have won their three games against Ivanhoe during the season in Rounds 1, 9 and 17 so theyare entitled to favouritism today. The Albert Park venue is also familiar teritory to Caulfield . For Ivanhoe, Len-gacher has been a reliable goal kicker and a fine player and Parkinson and Tucker have done well, For Caul-field Grammarians Bowater, King and Williams have been consistent players. Today I select CaulfieldGrammarians.

Ormond was the leading Club in A Section with 73 votes whilst 17 players from Old Xaverians attracted theumpires' eyes .

In B Section honours went to Ther ry, 71 votes and they shared with Marcellin the number of players to polleach having 15. In C Section Kew players polled 79 votes with 18 Old Melburnians sharing the votes.

Quite often OTF is fortunate enough to receive copies of a wide variety of Club Newsletters and is surprisedat the quality of both article and publication .

Last week the Ormond paper arrived at Elsternwick Park and 'OTF was so impressed with an article by ruckrover Martin Tobin, who you will note polled so well in the Woodrow that we sought and received Martin's per-mission to reproduce it for all Amateur Football readers .

For some obscure reason the reason is titled "Barrells Body Shop" . Don't be put off by the title read the contents!

BARRELLS BODY SHOP

"For the loser now will be later to win; for the times they are a-changing." Bob Dylan. No single word or expression sums up the history of human-kind more accurately than the word 'change. Change, transience and adaptability are themes at the heart of every transaction or occurrence that has ever taken place .Empires rise and fall, babies are born, grow old and die, and what is wisdom one day is obselete the next .Change and the uncertainty it involves is ironically one of the most permanent and constant elements of oursociety. While the change itself may be inevitable, the particular direction it takes can be shaped by th peoplewho live within its all-embracing influence . Scientists, thinkers and revolutionaries achieve things because theyare aware that what is now ; it not necessarily what will be tomorrow. In this age of flux adaptability is a vitalsymptoms of the human condition .Football and change have always been compatible bed-partners . Video footage of ninety-metre drop kicks andthe old deliberate kick out-on-the-full play is concrete evidence of football's continual transition . Yet even morevivid impressions of how our game once was are locked away in the memories of thousands of Melburnians .Ask them is Aussie Rules has changed! Some would tell you that the game has dramatically deteriorated . Toa certain extent I would agree ; the Americanization of Australian Football has done little for the suburban familyhoping to see a couple of hours of good, hard competitive sport .While not all the changes to football have been for the better, it is my view that adaptability and the willingnessto try something new is an attitude that all football people should openly embrace . Perhaps the most celebratedexample of trying something different was Carlton's "handball at all costs" second half revival in the 1970 Grand-Final . Today the art of taking calculated risks, the art of experimentation are a vital part of any football team's armoury .Football coaches will often refer to that half-time positional change or tactical deviance, "That was the movethat won us the game!" Unfortunately not all tams can move a Glendinning to Centre Half Forward, or movea Mehrten from the "guts" to the "goal-mouth" . And lets be realistic, these moves do not always have their desiredeffect . But if we did not try them occasionally, how would we ever know that they might work? The principleof trial-by-error has traditionally served us well .So when a Paul Schuhkraft has kicked eight goals by three quarter time, he should be prepared and willingto find himself stopping goals for the last quarter (as he was earlier this year) . Or when a ruckman like PaulMcDonald is asked to adapt to the recent trend of vigourously knocking a ground ball on, he should be readyto do so (as he did so well earlier this year) . "The big bonus about player X", I have heard football power-brokersremark, "is that he can play in any number of different positions" . In 1987 it appears, change and adaptabilityare part and parcel of good football .With fifteen wins so far this season it is evident that Ormond's overall team plan must be working quite efficiently .Yet with two losses to the same side all is not well . Faced with such a situation an innovative mind doesn't panicand dismantle the entire framework of his or her success . He or she shows a winningness to ever-so-slightlychange, or alter his or her performance. Minor modification and delicate fine-tuning is often enough to makea remarkable difference . Surely the prospect of finals football at Elsternwick Park provides a timely catalyst forsuch a change?

"PROFILE OF THE WEEK"Name: Colin Segota (Segota is a famous amateur name!)Age: 1 8Nickname : The Professo rColin is single and girls, he just got his licence .Likes : His yellow Gemini and girls and umpiring .Dislikes: Attending the Tribunal .Favourite Foods: Steaks, Fish & Chips, and Jelly BabiesFavourite Drinks : Chocolate Spiders and Beer (when his Dad's not around)Favourite Spo rts: Golf, cricket and marbles .Favourite Spo rtsmen : Greg Norman, Mike Tyson and Dame Edna Everage .Favourite T.V. Shows : Sale of the Century, Four Corners, Thunderbirds .Favourite Books : Penthouse, War & Pece and Phantom comics .Favourite Music : Classical, Greek and Adult Oriented Rock .Biggest Influence : His brother Adam and Mum, Jane .Hobbies :Ambition : To become a good consistent umpire and be nice to his sister and brother.

MEMO TO ALL UMPIRES : Remember our ANNUAL DINNER DANCE on the 25th of September, see RobBell or Kevin Segota for sporting arrangements - LET'S ALL BE THERE !! !

Neville Nash and Graeme Simpson have endeavoured throughout the season to improve the umpiring stan-dards and adopt a professional attitude . In one of the main areas of any umpires make-up is their mental ap-proach to their task on any Saturday and this was certainly brought home by Victorian and Australian Fast Bowl-er Simon Davis who was a guest speaker at our last meeting . Whilst cricket is a vastly different sport to football,Simon proved that in any sport to be successful you have to have certain attitudes and set "goals" for one'sself, and then have 5 main ingrediants to achieve those goals. 1 . Dedication 2 . Perserverance 3. Discipline 4 .Physical fitness 5. Mental toughness . I hope all umpires "took in" Simon's words of wisdom and "show" Nevilleand Graeme that they have the necessary attitude to be successful umpires . On behalf of all umpires I wouldlike to thank Neville for inviting Simon Davis and other guest speakers, such as Bernie Sheehy to talk to theumpires throughout the season .

I would also like to thank Peter Harris & Peter French for all the hard work and support in getting our "A"Section Grand Final Umpire's Club, off the ground . I'm sure this is the start of a new and exciting Club for allumpirs to aim at becoming a part of. To be eligible to become a member of this club, umpires must umpirethe "A" Grade Grand Final . (Membership is open to field umpires only, at this stage) .

Personality ParsTRUE SON OF XAVIE R

In 1974 David Kidd said "We must get NickBurne", so Nick commenced his amateur career withthe Old Xaverians.

1975/7 saw him at Melbourne University and aBlacks player.

The VAFA selectors recognised him in 1976 for thefirst time. He has now represented the VAFA in 13games.

Hawthorn were next to take an interest and from1978/80 he turned out for 53 games with the reserves .

Nick returned to the Old Xaverians in 1980 andhis game in the 1981 VAFA Grand Had will live forever.

Marriage and extension of his career saw Nick inEngland for 1985/6. This season his example to allyoung Xaverians is typical of him, possessed of afierce desire for excellence for there are no secondbests he has lifted all around him .

I am told by Nick's father that hours spent in thebackyard gave Nick his ability to kick left foot .

James Edgar Burne, Nick's new little boy will facethe same hard test and if he becomes a 5th genera-tion Xaverian he will be close to history.

From all your football friends Nick thank you foryour years of service to the game and all the enjoy-ment you have given us.

100 UP FOR TWO GOALIE SToday marks the 100 V.A .F.A . games milestone for two of our more experienced and senior Goal Um-

pires in Bernie Hoa re & Tom Wyles.Since joining the V.A .F.A. by their application and ability both were promoted to A Grade matches where

they have officiated over the last four seasons . Their competence was recognised in their appointmentto officiate at last seasons A Grade Grand Final between Collegians and North Old Boys .

This year Bernie was selected to try out with the V.F.L . and umpired two matches at V.F.L . Park andthe M .C.G ., which is further proof of the high standard and ability of V .A .F.A . umpires .

Goal Umpires can cometimes be the forgotten men of the six man umpiring tam, but as these twowill tell you the task can be both demanding and tiring and requires the utmost concentraction through-out the full four quarters of a match .

Congratulations Bernie and Tom on reaching your century and may you continue to display the profes-sionalism an dedication for which our umpires are well known .P.S.Today Bernie and Tom will officiate together at Ormond V Old Xavrians match at Elsternwick Park, in the"A" Section 2nd Semi-final .

'Today's Grand Final Coachestell Peter French why they'll be victorious

C SECTIO NBrett Burden (Kew) "I think we've proven we're the best side in C Section with out 18 wins and 1 loss . Wework hard when we haven't got the ball and the total commitment by our players and the bond we have makeus a very close knit team".

Brian Ford (Monash Blues) "Finals football is quite different . We showed enough endeavour last Saturdayand pressured Old Melburnians all day. We are playing confidently and have made it into the Grand Final andare very much the underdog . We have a real chance to be part of a complete turn around in a very short periodwhich is unusual in the Amateurs and will take a very positive approach into the game" .

D SECTIO NAlan Quaife (St . Kevins O .B .) "I think we've got the skills and the young fellows for the club which has notwon a thing for a very long time, They have the will to win and are desperately keen . St . Kevins last won a senior

Premiership way back in 1952 in D Section . Indeed that is the club's only Senior Flag since it joined the VAFA

in 1947 "

Also of interest is Alan Quaife's record . Alan has spent 13 seasons in the VAFA and missed the finals onlyonce in that time. (1986) Alan coached Bull/Temp. to 2 flags, Bulleen United to 1 and Parkside into a grand final .

Steve Ball (acting coach - Old Ivanhoe) "Finals football is more physical and requires greater fitness . OldIvanhoe has done the hrd work, St . Kevins are a fine side but one thing we have control over is our ownperformance.

If we play to our best nd take each quarter as it comes then we will win ."

E SECTIO NKen Bremner (State Bank) "Form fitness and Manpower. I believe we're in a better position than 1986 . Wehave a full list and a lot of depth . The introduction of a third XVIII has been of gret value to the club and themotivation for 15-16 who were all part of last season's debacle is also a plus ."

John Beaumont (West Brunswick) "Well I'm sure we'll win . I think we're a better side, certainly we're a veryclose tight knit group - we're a family and that'll see us through" .

F SECTIO NRay Keane (Whitefriars) "All I can say is we'll be giving it our best shot . We've played them 3 times in a monthso we should know their strengths and weaknesses by now . We have to stop their running rame and if every-body works hard we'll win . It's up to them "

Vic Hawking ( Aquinas) "I believe the players have a very good physcological point to prove. We won twiceduring the year but didn't have the right approach in the second semi . We'll be fitter and better prepared toman up and have a number of players with leadership qualities who will all perform when its tight ."

ST. BERNARDS - JACK O'CONNELL - 150GAMES

Mr Versatile - JACK O'CONNELL .Congratulations Jack on a great career for the club.

One of the "greatest" interchange players in the club'shistory. Jack's committment to the cricket club hasoften meant a late start to pre season training . Jacknormally catches up about May after he works off hissummer extravagances . Some past glories of Jack'scareer include being a member of our 1984 Premier-ship side and captaining the U/19's in 1981 . Mick,Jack's alter ego has often copped the brunt of his

on field antics. Mick being his identical twin brotherwho also played his 100th game this year. Marriagehas yet to effect his onfield performances however hissocial skills have improved dramatically over the pastyear. He now has been seen in Chinese restaurantsdining with "The Chief" and is thinking about pur-chasing his own speedboat for accommodation whilstholidaying in Yarrawonga .

We could do with a few more players of your calibrearound the club in the years to come . All the best fortoday and the coming weeks.
