Exal ted Ruler ’s MessageWhat a weekend it was!
Our Ritual Team, the Elks officers,
arrived in Walnut Creek on Friday
evening, getting ready for the com-
petition on Saturday morning. We
spent the evening together, trying to
relax and reviewing last minute
thoughts about the upcoming com-
petition. We walked from our hotel
to a restaurant down the street, Pasta
Primavera, where we enjoyed a won-
derful dinner. Then back to the hotel
where we spent time together, just
relaxing.
On Saturday morning we went to the
Walnut Creek Elks Lodge where the
Ritual Competition took place. Our
Lodge, along with another nine
lodges, went through the ritual in
front of a group of judges. The com-
petition actually took place over two
days, with some lodges performing
on Friday and others on Saturday. It
was a tense time waiting to be called
in by the judges for our performance,
all of us hoping we would do well.
As you can see by looking at the
photos to the right, our tension and
nerves paid off.
Following the performance we
returned to the hotel for a relaxing
afternoon, sharing pizza and stories
at pool side. Of course, we rehashed
how we had done and wondered if
we had done well enough to take
home some prizes.
Saturday evening, we returned to the
Lodge 1587 Ritual Team
Todd Simonson: Esquire, Mike Burke Lecturing Knight, Doug Buck: Loyal
Knight, Marty Smith: Exalted Ruler, Hal Channell: Coach, Carol Kent:
Leading Knight, Matt Peller: Inner Guard, Carol Lewis: Chaplain
And the Winners are:
Todd Simonson, 3rd, Doug Buck: 3rd, Marty Smith, Team (Readers): 1st,
Carol Kent: 1st, Carol Lewis: 2nd.
The Lodge Flag Day Program is
being set for Friday June 14 at 5:30
p.m. at the Lodge Flag Center.
Sonora Emblem Club 124 will par-
ticipate.
As in the past, the program will con-
sist of songs and readings, and
refreshments will be available after
the program. The public is invited
so bring your friends and neighbors.
Mike Burke sent me an article on
Francis Scott Key,
(Click on this link to read about
him.)
. It is well worth the time to read it.
We may all know part of the story,
but not all of it. I had either forgot-
ten a lot or just plain did not know
it all.
Bill Youngman is rehabbing the old
TV cabinet. Americanism will use it
as a display case for jackets and
shirts to remind our members of
items that are available for purchase,
and will be used along with the pres-
ent jewelry case. The Lodge sales
facility provides some revenue to off
set the Americanism expenses for
awards to students in the Lodge
essay contest. Take a look at the cab-
inet, the committee would be happy
to sell you a name badge, Elk pin
or what ever your "little ol' heart
desires". This year we hope to
restock the supply of Elk items. Stop
by and let us know what you would
like, and we will try to get it.
Fly Old Glory, high and often.

Elk of the Month The Elk of the Month goes to Cheryl Reich for all of the work she has done, by preparing and serving meals, and always being there when volunteers are needed. Thank you Cheryl for all of your hard and dedicated work. Marty Smith, Exalted Ruler.
Americanism MAJOR PROJECT
Last month I wrote about a possible
transition from this Major Project
Chair position, and after consultations
it, was decided that I would retain this
Chair. I did manage the transition
from some other Lodge Chairs that I
held, and that is a relief for me. I wish
those new Chairs well in their new
jobs. As I write this column, our
Exalted Ruler is now in Fresno at the
C.H.E.A. Convention and will be
making the march with our check in
about 2 days. I will have that tally for
the next report in July.
I already have some individuals to
name that have turned in their Purple
Pigs after the cutoff date. They have
been counted and their receipts have
been mailed out. They are: Toni
Richardson, Ernie Cuzzocreo, P.E.R.,
John Etheridge, Ina Kassahn, carrying
on Ted’s tradition, Linda Durnall &
from Minden Nevada, George Brunz.
This is my annual explanation of
how you too can join one of our Clubs
and receive recognition, .not only in
our newsletter, but in the C.H.E.A.
Magazine: The “52 Club” is based on
a dollar a week for 52 weeks. One
$52.00 donation will earn you a cer-
tificate. The “Century Club” is based
on $100.00 donation and you will
also receive a certificate. A
“Millenium Club” certificate is based
on a $1000.00 donation, and they are
always recognized. Remember that
the backbone of our program is the
Purple Pigs that can have varying
amounts of coin in them, and they are
all put to good use for the disabled
kids.
Remember, a coin a day and they’ll,
walk, talk, see, and play.

lodge for a banquet and the award-
ing of prizes. Of course, the dinner
ran late, leaving all of us on pins and
needles, waiting for the announce-
ment of the winners. It was so satis-
fying to see our members as they
walked to the front of the room to
receive their medallions for out-
standing performance.
All in all, it was a weekend to
remember. Our team had a chance to
spend some time together, getting to
know one another better in a relaxed
setting at our hotel. After weeks of
rehearsing I think all of us were glad
to have the competition behind us
especially knowing we had done so
well. I am proud of the team and the
effort they put in to make a good
showing at the competition. Each of
the team members is to be com-
mended for their effort.
During the month of June, the East
Lounge will be open on Saturdays
from 3:00 to 7pm.

Elks National Foundation Last year’s ENF for our District was the highest earning Lodge I would like to continue that this year I turned in over $1,300.00 in April. It's a little slow in May. We would like our membership to try and make a small donation each month so we can be on top this year. Also Jim Phelan is going to work with me on the ENF Grants. Bill Youngman

Second Quarterly Report
January 1 to March 31, 2019 -
Sonora Elks Lodge 1587
Sonora Lodge continues to get back
to its status of being a profitable
Lodge in the Central District. The
Lodge is making changes inside and
outside. This is due to the contribu-
tions from the members, who are
volunteering their time and money to
make this happen. This is my second
quarterly report to Grand Lodge. Six
months have gone by since the
Lodge was put on probation. Sonora
Lodge continues in the right direc-
tion. Here are some of the reasons
why:
Financially able to pay their bills
month to month.
More participation of officers and
members.
More officers of Sonora Lodge hold-
ing Central District positions.
More activities for the members.
More lodge rentals from the public.
This is due to a new lodge manager.
More participation of Past Exalted
Rulers.
This is some of the progress the
Lodge has made.
Financial Report:
Cash on hand 3,000.00
Pettycash 200.00
Savings 37,470.39
Operation Funds 5,787.88
Restricted Funds:
Restricted Funds 11,491.29
Investments:
Miller Fund 28,210.04
Olivieri Grant 9986.33
Pugh Sonora high scholarship fund
30,373.29
Guidici Scholarship fund
59,111.55
Officers and Trustees:
Sonora Lodge has a full core of offi-
cers in every position. There are five
Past Exalted Rulers in the chairs this
year. Lots of experience to guide the
Lodge this year. The trustees are also
very dedicated in the operation of the
Lodge. The budget for 2019-2020 is
prepared, and I find the trustees to
be very frugal in spending the Lodge
money.
House Committee:
The House Committee holds regu-
lar meetings, and have a full core of
officers. The House Committee and
Trustees meet together regularly.
They also hold separate meetings.
Past Exalted Rulers Association:
The Past Exalted Rulers of Sonora
Lodge are meeting monthly. I am
happy to say they are more involved
with their Lodge. At the installation
of officers this year, Sonora had a
full core of officers.
Lodge Activities:
Sonora Lodge has a full calendar of
events for their members. This helps
the camaraderie and friendship of
the members. I have seen a big dif-
ference in the moral in the Lodge.
The members are attending more
meetings and social functions.
Membership:
The Lodge membership is up. In the
past three months the Lodge has
added twenty eight new members.
The initiation of new members will
be impressive with the new officers.
In conclusion of this second quarter-
ly report, Sonora Lodge is following
all Grand Lodge statues and poli-
cies.
