PRIMAL Youth Project
Yokine Ultimate League
We had so much fun with the first Yokine League we decided to run another! Over the 2010/11 summer season over 70 participants took part in our Tuesday night competition at Yokine Reserve in Yokine. The first competition ran for ten weeks and hosted 6 teams; Car Park Lovers, Scooba Steves, Hammer Time, Disco Inferno, Duck or Bleed and Slipped Discs. Scooba Steves defeated Duck or Bleed in an exciting final 12 points to 8. Players Choice Awards went to Renee Forth and Malcolm Mallia (Slipped Discs) and Duck or Bleed were worthy Spirit Winners. The second league also consisted of 6 teams with Snake Head Justice joining the competition along with Scooba Steves, Hammer Time, Disco-Very, Duck or Bleed and Slipped Discs. Disco-Very played a sensational final, making a huge comeback to beat the previously undefeated Scooba Steves team. Players Choice Awards went to Annie Jessop (Snake Head Justice) and Blake Lewis (Disco-Very) and Snake Head Justice were the very well deserved recipients of the Spirit prize. Thank you to all involved and we look forward to seeing you all again next October.

On Sunday 15 May, Bunbury Ultimate Club held Moovin’ the Groove. This mixed
gender event comprised of four Perth teams and the host club in a round robin
competition.
Our first match after the long drive was against Happy Pig. We did well for our first
game together and only went down by 3 points. Next we faced the host Club,
Butter Monkeys. The team found its stride and won 14 points to 1. Game three
saw us face the seasoned FEAR Club but with the team high on confidence,
excellent defence and flowing offense saw PRIMAL take the game 11 points to 4.
After three long games and getting too relaxed with the bye that followed we were
no match for the Ding Bats. With lightning quick transitions and throws so good all
we could do was watch as Ding Bats demolished us 15 points to 1.
This of course made the one goal all the sweeter with an amazing forehand huck
from Monte Masarei to Julie Hardt in the end zone.
PRIMAL Ultimate Club was represented by a squad of 12 who made the road trip;
Sam Francoise, Jaxon Botje, Jack Morris, Rhys Zanella, Kyal Oh, Monte Masarei,
Andrew Jennings (AJ), Natalie Kippin, Julie Hardt, Annie Jessop, Geri Viros and
Anna Haynes.
Thanks to Geri, Annie and Anna who
drove, for AJ’s inspirational singing and
Zanella’s amazing defense!
The day was ended with a friendly yet
very competitive game of Flutterguts.

Currently underway is our Monday night Winter League.
The format for this League is know as a Hat League. This means each week teams are drawn from a Hat and all participants get to play with different team mates each week. All participants carry over their team’s weekly total as an individual score and it accumulates over the ten weeks. At the end of the League the male and female with the highest individual scores will be dubbed King and Queen Hat Winners. To add some extra excitement all scores that are the result of a Hammer throw are worth two points, also each team has the option to play one Joker point per game. The Joker point is worth two points to the team that gets the goal. If the Joker point is scored off a Hammer throw it is worth three points!
We have new players joining in this fun each week, don’t miss out - sign up today.
Monday nights from 6:30pm.
Cost is $35 for the League or $5 per game for casual play.

Playing with PRIMAL in the recent tournament hosted by Bunbury Ultimate Club was an exciting day. It was great to see the efforts of training pay off with everyone on great playing form.
There were many highlights but my standout would be Jaxon’s inside-out flick up the sideline to Sam for a score. The team looked great too, in our new uniforms.
In April, I headed off to Nationals 2011, in Brisbane. This year I played for Vixens, an Auckland team from NZ. I had a great time, learning the new team’s dynamics, hearing some new tips & getting another perspective on game plays. My most memorable games were against Christchurch (NZ), Team Box & Squadron (Melbourne) & Black Betty (Brisbane).
Now that winter is upon us, I look forward to running around in the rain playing Monday night Ulti! The K & Q Hat is in its 4th week now. We are welcoming new players each week so its great to see our Club growing.
Don’t forget to sign up for the upcoming indoor tournament and let us know if you want to take part in the Wednesday night league.

The last six months have been a blur of east coast tournaments. In October I went to Bathurst for the Aus t ra l i an Mixed U l t ima te Championships. 26 teams took part in the three day tournament. Whilst at this event the annual awards took place and I was present to hear PRIMAL named 2010 Club of the year.
After mixed Nationals it was time to focus on the separate gender competitions on the calendar. Regionals was first, held in Canberra it is a qualifying tournament for teams competing at the Australian Ultimate Championships.
My team: Sand Dunes finished 2nd. Next we went to the Brisbane Canberra Invitational and finished 3rd then we hit Brisbane for Nationals and finished 5th.
Following these tournaments the All Australian Squad was named and I was included with 10 other WA players in this squad.
Also coming up is the National Youth Ultimate Training Camp in July in Melbourne which I will attend along with Kyal and Paige Oh and Annie Jessop.
In August I’m off to Canada. The Canadian Ultimate Championships are being held in Ottawa and I will be there to watch them and well as have a bit of a run around on Canadian soil.
