Our rules and regulations are posted at our pools and on our website. And, as many of you know, access to our pools is one of the many reasons our members join. DVRC spends a substantial amount of money to maintain our pools; cleaning, fixing broken mechanical things, maintaining the pool decking and keeping the water chemicals balanced. So, rest as- sured that these rules are there not to impose on your freedoms, but to maintain safety and health standards so that all of us can enjoy the benefits of using our pools. DVRC asks that you take a shower before entering the pool to reduce the volume of bac- teria that goes into the water. DVRC also asks that you not apply lotion or sprays and enter the pool less than 45 minutes after applying. This allows time for the lotion to be absorbed by the skin so that the oils don’t clog and deteriorate the pool lines or leave a film on the pool tile. So please, take a shower before you enter the pool. Signing in when you enter the pool area is another requirement. These records are im- portant if someone is injured and provides the office with valuable information about atten- dance. Also, the use of unacceptable behavior towards others is prohibited and can result in membership suspension. These rules apply to everyone so please know and abide by the rules or we may be forced to add pool monitors to identify those that don’t. Our pools are here for your enjoy- ment. PRESIDENT’S MESSAGEby Johna Sharp

Welcome to September! This month is the start of the return of some of our winter visitors and I look forward to seeing some new faces back here at the Villa.

Whether you’re a winter visitor or a year-round resident, being a member of DVRC not only requires our members pay fees but obligates them to follow published rules and regula-tions. So, rest as-sured that these rules are there not to impose on your freedoms, but to maintain safety and health standards so that all of us can enjoy the benefits of using our pools.

DVRC asks that you take a shower before entering the pool to reduce the volume of bac-teria that goes into the water.

These records are im-portant if someone is injured and provides the office with valuable information about atten-dance. If you see someone abusing the rules, please kindly ask that they abide by the rules so that all of us can enjoy the pools. Sign in and out, and don’t forget to add your guests. Also, the use of unacceptable behavior towards others is prohibited and can result in membership suspension. These rules apply to everyone so please know and abide by the rules or we may be forced to add pool monitors to identify those that don’t. Our pools are here for your enjoy-ment. Please help us maintain them.

Speaking of pools of water, we’ve had some terrific thunderstorms lately. Fortunately, most of them late at night. During monsoon season, be sure to secure your trash bins and keep your flying flags safe!

A Big Shout out to our

Maintenance Crew!

Our maintenance crew has been busy working on summer projects and the results are showing. Just this past month they have redone the floors in Farnsworth Hall and Read Hall. They were terrible, but now they are shining so pretty. It’s a hard job and one that is very much appre-ciated! So thanks to those who help to keep our amenities together and in shipshape. We do appreciate the job you do!

by Lewis (Lew) HooserIt has been my pleasure this past year

to write the column for Help Services and to work with all the board mem-bers, James Cook president and Dean Albers vice president, as well as the editor of the Citizen newspaper, Mary Barry. I rarely find it difficult to find a subject that best suits the wonderful work that the Board members and all the volunteers do to make Help Servic-es what it is today, and what it stands

for in our community.I want to take this opportunity while

we are a little slow this summer for exciting news stories to say thanks to all who stopped by to donate this past year to help keep Help Services doors open. It’s that kind of community spirit and support that really does help. Now with the snowbirds home we can fo-cus our attention on getting some new volunteers to help us out. If you would like to pitch in and give us a hand, we would really appreciate it. Just stop by the shop and talk to one of the monitors on duty.

I want you to know there is no short-age of nice people in Dreamland Villa and Velda Rose Estates.

Here is a small list of things that we can loan out, such as hospital beds,

commodes, toilet risers (with and without handrails), knee-walkers that fold, canes of all different kinds (some quads, some folding, etc.), crutches, C-walkers, wheelchairs and beds, just to mention a few.

By the way we still have two nice looking Mobility Scooters for a do-nation of $499.00 each. This price also includes free delivery to home in Dreamland Villa and Velda Rose Es-tates. These items can be seen at Help Services.

Our summer hours are still in effect so please make a note that we are closed on Saturdays. The rest of the week re-mains the same Monday through Fri-day, 9 am to noon, blood pressure clinic on Mondays from 9 am to noon. Stay cool, until next time, Adios!

CARD BINGOBy Donna Hopp

Card Bingo is played every Thursday at 10:30 am at Read Hall. This event is for Dream-land Villa Members. It is a fun game and a great way to meet new friends and neighbors. All you need to play is 3 nickels, 3 dimes, 3 quarters and one-dollar bill. If you live outside of Dreamland Villa and would like to join the fun you can pay $10.00 a month to the office and they will give you a receipt to show and play.

Dreamland on the Go!by Kathie Chismar

A busload of Dreamland residents left Farnsworth Hall’s parking lot on Saturday, August 11 for a fun filled day at Mazatzal Casino in Payson. Even if we did not come home a winner, we enjoyed the companionship of our neighbors and the day away from the heat of the val-ley. Some of us enjoyed a walk in the 86-degree weather and many enjoyed the $10 buffet. I hope we can plan another trip in the future.

Sue Sinclair Travel has an amazing variety of trips planned for the rest of 2018 and 2019. I have the flyers with full details for overnight packages for Las Vegas and Mexico as well as her day trips to local attractions. Her escorted tours include a cruise and land package to Italy, as well as Copper Canyon in Mexico. There are flyers in the office and at Read hall or you can reach me at 480-830-6641 or 732-986-7788 or by email at [email protected].

Ladies’ Buncoby Cyn Munday and Aggie Forsyth

Wow, seems like the Bunco group keeps growing every month! We always have such a good group of women who come to play a fun game and to social-ize with each other. Happily, we never have any angry losers! We did send the Booby Cow home with someone but I don’t think she was the biggest loser – she just liked the cow!

We’re hoping for a good turnout again next month so please be sure to mark your calendars – it’s once a month on the fourth Thursday. This month it will be September 27th. Bring $2 for prize money and whatever you like to drink. If you’d like to bring a treat to share, please do. If you are a key card holder, please join us for an evening of fun and laughter at Read Hall at 7:00

MONTHLY POTLUCK

By Bea BeckWell, August is done and September is

here, fall can’t be far behind. That means cooler temperatures and snow birds start to flock. We had a very small turn out for July’s dinner. I was a little disappointed. I hope to see more of you this month!

I’m thinking of maybe having themed din-ners. What are your thoughts? You can con-tact me by e-mail @[email protected], land line 480- 553-7214 or on Next Door. I’d really like to hear from y’all.

Don’t forget the Potluck is on September 20. Doors open at 5 pm at Read Hall. Dinner is at 5:30. As always, I am looking for volun-teers to help clean up after dinner.

See you on the 20th!

How About a Cup of Java?

By Barbara MillerYes, that’s what I said… a cup of java.

You can join us on the second and fourth Saturdays of the month at Read Hall at 7:30 am for a cup of hot coffee and a deli-cious pastry or doughnut. In addition to a small donation, you will receive loads of information about Dreamland and its ac-tivities as well was meeting and chatting with the other guests. Don’t forget to mark on your calendars now the 14th and 28th of September to attend the Coffee Social. See you there.

FUN TIME CERAMICS

By Barb ShererWow, time sure flies. It seems like summer

just started and now it’s over. Cooler weather will be here soon, bringing back our friends and neighbors that escaped either into their air-conditioned homes or up north to other responsibilities. We’re happy you made it through the summer and hope you will soon be joining us at the clubhouse.

Here are a few of the projects painted by our ceramics’ members before we closed in May. Perhaps you might be interested in producing a unique item yourself. If so, Fun Time Ceramics will open up again on Tuesday, September 11. We’ll be here on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9 am until noon. Come join us.

Dreamland Villa Quilting Clubby Becky Lamson

Our photo this month is a sample of a 1600 quilt pieced by Faye Miller.

We are working on a 1600 quilt project through September. It uses 42-inch length of fabric cut 2 1/2 inches wide. They are sewn together end-to-end. Then, we take one end and bring it toward the other with right sides of fabric together and stitch the length. When you reach the end, cut across. Repeat bring-ing the ends and right sides together and sew. Repeat until your quilt is 32-strips wide. The border, if you decide it needs one, can be made by sewing strip together into five-inch widths strips or from one piece of fabric cut 5” wide. Stitch the border to all sides and it’s ready to be sandwiched with the binding and backing and quilted. This is an easy project for any quilting skill-level.

We are on our summer meeting schedule so we meet on the second and fourth Thursday af-ternoon 1:00 to 3:00 pm at Read Hall. We will

stay on that schedule through September. New and prospective members are always wel-come. If you desire, bring along an item for show and tell. Bring a project to work on or help with one of the clubs group projects.

We welcome your unused quilting fabric. You can contact Becky Lamson at 480-202-7003, and she will arrange a time to pick it up, or you may drop it off during our quilt meetings at Read Hall Thursday afternoons.

Quilters’ quote of the month: I have an affliction…it’s a quilting addiction.

POKER & TEXAS HOLD ‘EMThese Card games are held all summer

By Jerry HoppCome out and play some cards: We play Texas Hold ‘em Tuesday nights at 6:00 sharp.

On Fridays at 10:30 am to 2:00 pm we play 5-cent poker. If you are a member of DVRC, come and join us on Tuesday or Friday or both days in the poker room at DVRC R 8. Questions? - Please call Jerry at 715-630-4151. It’s a great way to meet new people.

SINGLES CLUBby Lois DeLong

August was another busy month for the Singles Club. Our activities included at-tending the John Denver Tribute at the Hale Theatre, seeing the movie, “The Spy Who Dumped Me,” and going on the Dreamland Villa trip to the Mazatzal Casino.

For our dining pleasure, we had our usu-al hearty potluck, breakfast at IHOP, lunch at the Seafood Market and dinner at BJ’s.

Our Games, Grub and Gab cardplayers met each week of August to play Hand and Foot. This is now a regularly scheduled weekly activity. They meet every Tues-day at 1 pm at Read Hall. If you’d like to join them, come to one of our meetings or a potluck and find out about the Singles

Club. We welcome new members. The next Singles potluck will be Tues-

day, September 4, 6 pm at Read Hall. Our meetings are scheduled for Wednesdays, September 12 and 26, 9:30 am at Read Hall.

A trip to Antelope Valley is planned for October. Tentative future plans include Barleens Arizona Opry and the Hale The-atre plays and musicals.

We are happy to report that hard work and dedication paid off and there was a $500 profit from the Brats and Beans event. This money went to the Dreamland Villa Fundraising Committee. Thanks to all who volunteered and attended and made this a success.

Fused Glass – A Changeby Cyn Munday

It’s that time when our winter visitors are thinking about return-ing to our friendly valley in the sun. We will look forward to seeing them all again and hearing all the tales of summer.

It has been a cooker here and we are so thank-ful to have a great place to get away and out of this heat wave. It gives us a pleasant place to go and try out our creative side. We have been meeting on Thursdays all summer, but the month of September brings a change – We will be meeting only on Mon-days for September only. October will bring Dave and Katie back!

Fused glass is a different type of art where you actually choose your glass, cut it to the shape you choose and the fuse it to either another piece of glass to create a nice dish, yard art, or even jewelry. We have seen so many wonder-ful works of art from here.

We do show off a few of our items in the window and at Read Hall to give you some ideas. There are a few items for sale as well if you are interested. We have some wonderfully artistic folks here at Dreamland and this is a good outlet for them and for those of us who appreciate their abilities.

Glass is available for purchase and there is a minimal charge for the use of the kiln. Yes, all of the tools are provided and there is minimal instruction. We will do our best to help you feel comfort-able and to have a good time.

Don’t forget – Starting Monday, Sept 3rd all classes will be on Monday – 9:30am to noon and 1pm to 3pm.

WET PAINTby Alicia Short

Before we know it fall and win-ter season will be here and our win-ter visitors will be back in town. The art department will be back in swing with classes starting the first week of November. And will continue with new classes in January, 2019.

The schedule is not fi-nalized yet but for sure Ila is expected to be there on Monday afternoon for art-ist to paint in any media. Ila has been an instructor and leader in the Art Depart-ment for a number of years and her energy and enthu-siasm is amazing. Alicia will be back with probably two classes, one for any media including watercolor and another just for people working in acrylic mixed media. Alicia has been teaching for about 10 years at Dreamland Villa.

New this fall is a class on In-troduction to Paper Quilling Work-shop with classes to follow, begin-ning in November, 2018 and again in January, 2019. The art form of

Quilling is a portable, versatile, low cost craft. Finished pieces are used as a stand-alone art form to create many 3D items to be than used to create: cards, place cards, gift tags, scrapbook enhancements, jewelry, decor, pieces to use in mixed media art and more. Join the

fun and creativity of an ancient art form. All paper supplies, tools and other materials are provided for this workshop. Join the workshop, make new friends, and have an en-joyable time discovering if this is an art form you wish to further pur-

sue. Explore before you invest. For more information contact: Linda Herreman. 605-341-5249 [email protected].

In January, Alicia will offer a couple of one-day workshops… one on techniques for making an Art Journal (a book of pages using

papers, paints and other ob-jects for a fun and beautiful page). A theme will be cho-sen such as inspirational quotes, photos of grand-children or one of Alicia’s has recipes of home-made body products. Another workshop will be on paint-ing paper to create a paint-ing. It’s a fun workshop in which you will paint on rice paper or other papers; tear pieces to “paint” an image that you have se-lected. More about these workshops later.

We are still looking for Crafters to teach a class or workshop. Instructors must be paid DVRC members.

For information on how this works, email Alicia at [email protected].

We hope to see you in the fall and winter sessions.

Computer Club

by Kay HawbakerIn this September issue,

the computer club would like to let members know that the Board plans to resume a class calendar starting in Oc-tober. The Board will meet on Monday afternoon at 1:00 o’clock, the 24 of September. The meeting is open to any-one interested in computers and smartphones and tablets. The first General Meeting of the season will be on the third of October at 9:00 am in Read Hall. The photo class, how-ever will not start until No-vember. Don Davidson’s iPad class will resume in October. The Q&A will restart on Sep-tember 8 after having taken off the month of August. As with many of the activi-ties in DVRC, the computer schedules depend on the in-dividuals who volunteer time to share the information or skills. Please check the web-site Dreamland calendar for October classes after the Sep-tember Board Meeting. An updated calendar will also be posted on the Room 9 door and in the office.

Anyone wishing to join the club may do so in October and then will not be charged again on January 1 for the year 2019. Dues remain the same: $15 for one person, $20 for two people living in the same household. DVRC members are welcome to come into the Computer Room and check out what we have to offer at anytime.

Dreamland Tuesday Bowling League

we will all sorely miss. Joann Sphor was one of those people that brought a smile to everyone’s face. We all laughed with her and were so thank-ful to have her on our league.
