Isn't it strange how you can rememberthe lines of a poem you memorized backin junior high school but can't think ofthe name of a person you met last week.Just the other day the line, "I am a partof all that I have met" popped into mymind. I think it's Tennyson and I thinkI first came across it back in about gradeten. Certainly it must have made animpression on me. Interesting line."I am a part of all that I have met."(Please don't hold me to it being an exactquote; I'm too lazy to check it out atthe library.)

I guess that what it means is thatwe are a composite of many things,many experiences that we have had dur­ing life. Some have made a profoundimpression upon us, others very little.I'm guessing that our barbershop lives areno different. Our opinions and reac·tions today are based of what has gonebefore. I'm sure that one of the reasonsI've been a big fan of woodshedding goesback to an experience I had back in 1961at the mid-winter convention in Mil­waukee.

Kath and I were living in Winnipeg,Manitoba at the time and took the train(Yes, trains. Remember them? Ran onrails and had whistles and horns thatproved the Doppler effect.) from thereto Milwaukee. The train was so scheduledthat we arrived very early. Indeed therewere almost no Barbershoppers in thelohby. Three there were, who immediate­ly approached with the question, "Whatpart do you sing?" My reply of a littlelead and baritone led to my rapid ap-

pointment as the lead of our quartet.What a night! We sang. from about

eight in the evening till the wee hours ofthe morning. Sure, I'd sung in a quartetin college and we'd sung by ear. No mu­sic. And over a decade of barbershoppingand three quartets I'd done my share ofharmonizing. But, man and boy, nothinglike this. That's the night that I found outabout the art within the artform. I'ddo my best to hang out a lead line butwhat these guys could improvise aroundthat melody line was like nothing I'dever been involved in. Their names:Webb Leubtow, Bobby Brock, and JimPoindexter. I'll not bother with lengthyexplanations about who they were andwhere they were from; if you're a realold timer you'll know. If not, the ex­planation probably wouldn't mean any­thing anyway. Besides, names are not thepoi nt of the story,

What about your experiences in bar­bershopping? How do they color yourpresent feelings toward the Society?Your chapter? Competitions? The judgingprogram? Conventions?

I guess the thing I'm trying to pointout is this. We all come to our presentbarbershop position from varying bar­bershop backgrounds and experiences.My opinion on a given subject may bevery, very different from yours becauseof past experience. Maybe we can bothbenefit by listening to the other's pointof view. And thereby open our barber­shop vistas still further.

The passing of International PresidentBill Park was a personal shock to manyBarbershoppers. The Society has lost agreat administrator, fine leader and closefriend.

After I agreed to fill the vacancy ofInternational president for 1986, I re­called conversations with Bill about howthe 1985 theme, "Make Music MeanMembership," tied into his thought for1986 - "Are We Listening?"

There's a lot of philosophy in thatquestion, .. and it runs deep in all as­pects of Society life:

are we listening to the needs of thechapter?are we listening for problems insteadof listening for successes?are we listening to our music leader­ship on all levels?

are music directors listening to mem­ber needs for singing and education?are we listening for the thrill of bar·bershop harmony and sharing it withothers?is the Society membership listening toitself to determine what's best for thefuture of their organization?

The Society provides many ways toencourage better musicianship and betterchapters through Barberpole Cat tapes;barbershop preview tapes; conventionfilms; video tapes on "What Are WeTrying To Preserve?" and "Eight PointsTo Fun" for chapter programming,"What's Right With The Society" andmore listening tools to enhance ourhobby.

Once the philosophy of the question

sinks in, we must act. We must expandour musical horizons through educationand ollr membership goals throughgrowth. We must share this wonderfulsound called barbershop harmony in ouractions and our singing.

During the coming year, I'll be com·menting more on this question - "AreWe Listening?" While all the chaptersplan for 1986, let's be aware of member

. needs, musical education offered by theSociety and districts, and make the ef­fort to share the thrill of singing bar­bershop harmony.

And in Bill Park's memory, I chargeeach chapter to consider - ARE WELISTENING to MAKE MUSIC MEANMEMBERSHIP?

The Society mourns the loss of 1986International President William K. Park.Parkdied January 22 at the age of 61.He was recovering from brain surgerywhich he underwent in October.

Park was the Society's 42nd president.This is the first time an Internationalpresident has died in office. While provi­sions have been made to fill the presi­dency, the Society has lost the specialvision Park brought to the office. Bar·bershoppers, friends, and the Interna­tional staff will miss the exuberant spiritPark displayed while preparing to servehis term.

Park was involved in barbershoppingacross the country. His job with DuPontCompany took him to WestchesterCounty, New York; Houston, Texas; andSouth Bay, California. He was active ineach of these areas as a chapter and dis·trict officer. He is one of two Barber­shoppers to serve as district president

in two districts. He filled this capacityin the Society's two largest districts,Mid-Atlantic in 1972, and Far Westernin 1976. Before his election as Inter­national vice president, Park served asan International board member. Parkwas elected to the presidency at the 1985International convention in Minneapolis,Minnesota. He had served on the execu·tive committee since 1983.

Park was a member of the Wilmington,Delaware chapter and sang with theChorus of the Brandywine.

Park was recently retired as managerof domestic sales for the petroleumchemicals division of DuPont Companyafter 35 years with the company. He wasa member at the 25·year Club of theAmerican Petroleum Institute and amember of the Society of AutomotiveEngineers.

life. Members of the church choir, withwhich Park also sang, and the Wilming·ton chapter Chorus of the Brandywine,sang during the service. More than 200friends and Barbershoppers gathered forthe service.

Park is survived by his wife, Joan;two sons, Fred and William Michael;and a daughter, Anne.

Society Charts Course For 1986At Mid-Winter Convention

Tucson offered warm weather and a bigwelcome to the 1,300 Barbershoppersand their families 'attending the 1986Mid-Winter convention.

The usual festivities were overshadow­ed by the announcement of internationalpresident Bill Park's death. His passingbrought the executive committee intospecial session. It was announced at theconvention that 1985 president GilLefholz would fill the international presi­dent position for 19B6. John T. Gilles­pie, international president in 1984, willserve as immediate past president. Parkhad requested that Leiholz officiate atthe Mid·Winter convention as his recuper­ation from brain surgery in October pre·vented him from attending.

When the international board con­vened their meeting, Lefholz welcomedvice president Jim Richards as a newmember of the executive committee,Other elected officers for 1986 are JimWarner, vice president/treasurer, and Dar­ryl Flinn, vice president.

Lefholz also welcomed new inter­national board members and presentedthem with lapel pins and their badge ofoffice: Roger Davidson (Cardinal), RonAbel (Central Stetes), Sam 8arger (FarWestern), Jim Gougeon (Pionee,), JuiianWhite (Southwestern), and Brett White(Sunshine).

International vice president/treasurerJim Warner gave a very comprehensivereport to the board on behalf of both thefinance and executive committees. Inconclusion he presented a budget for1986 which contains no provision for adues increase but does provide for an ex­cess of income over expense of $12,600.This budget was approved by the board.

Dr. Val Hicks presented the Mid­Winter convention keynote address. (Thecomplete address is printed in this issue.)Hicks is a Harmony College faculty mem­ber, arranger, director of the Santa Rosa

Redwood Chordsmen Chorus, and is pre·sently writing the Society's 50th anni­versary history publication. Hicks is acollege music instructor at Santa RosaJunior College. Hicks is also creditedwith giving the Osmond Brothers theirstart in singing barbershop harmony.

The selection of the Society's 1986honorary member was of particular in­terest to Hicks. The board approvedgranting four lifetime memberships to aquartet - the Osmond Brothers. TheOsmonds will be present to accept theirhonorary memberships at the Interna·tional convention in Salt Lake City.

Other major international board/exe­cutive committee decisions include:

International Convention - A formatchange will be introduced at the 1986convention in Salt Lake City on a oneyear trial basis. There will be three con­test sessions on Thursday - 11 :00 a.m.,3:30 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. The semi-finalquartet contest will be scheduled forFriday afternoon at 12:30 p.m. (In aprevious decision, the finals were changedfrom Friday night to Saturday night.)

The board also decided that an eightriser configuration will be standard for

the international chorus contest; 10 willbe provided upon request of the com­peting chapter/chorus.

There was also considerable discussionconcerning the questions of an enter­tainment package for quartets at the in·ternational contest, and some sort of achorus elimination whereby the top fivewould return in a final round to deter­mine the winner. No action was taken oneither proposal at the present time.

Contest and Judging Program - Anumber of changes were made in therules. Competitors and judges will receivecomplete and detailed information. Or, ifyou are interested, you can request de·tailed information from the music de·partment at the international office.The following is a summation of the mostimportant changes.

Entries for district and internationalpreliminary contests must be post­marked 14 days prior.The rules pertaining to patriotic andreligious material were relaxed so asto allow passing references to God orUncle Sam.Article 14 of the chorus and quartetrules will now disallow the use of

In recognition of international his­torian Dean Synder's contributions to theSociety, the board passed a resolutionstating their appreciation of his efforts.

The international achievement awardwinners were announced during the can·vention. They are: Top Chapter - Saddle·back Valley, California; Top District ­Far Western; Second Place District ­Mid·Atlantic; Third Place District - Sene·ca Land.

In still another international boarddecision, it was decided to extend the

musical instruments for introductions,interludes and conclusions. Eliminatedwas the reference to specifically com·posed songs that convey the contest­ant's name or names as being a dis­qualification offense.Verbage was added to further identifythe use and intent of the verbal com­ment restriction.The amount of singing time waschanged from four to six minutes, tothree and a half to six and a halfminutes.There will now be a total loss ofscore when a song or medley is dis­qualified.The international C&J Committee isnow allowed to select the contestpanels for both the district and inter­national preliminary contests.The Association of International

Champions (A.I.C.) received approval tostage a "Sing With The Champs" sessionin Salt Lake City. Following the successof the "Sing With The Champs" sessionsin Minneapolis in 1985, the A.I.C. willagain offer Barbershoppers the oppor­tunity to sing with various A.l.e. quar­tets.

TheWorld's Largest Barbershop Chorusbrough 710 Barbershoppers to the stage.Directed by Bob Johnson, the Society'sformer director of music education andservices, the chorus sang to a sell-outcrowd.

The Food For Thought Breakfastattracted 75 Barbershoppers. A generalexchange of ideas for chapter activitieswas the highlight of the breakfast.

The first International Seniors Quar­tet contest brought 18 quartets to thestage. Each registered quartet had to haveits foursome total a cumulative age of240. Each member had to be at least55 years old. Winner of the contest wasthe George Baggish Memorial Quartetwith Frank Lanza, Richard "Doc" Sause,Fred Steinkamp and Edgar Keller. TheF.O_G.S. The International Board of Directorsextended the "Three For One" member­ship dues incentive plan during theMid·Winter convention. The program willbe in effect during 19B6.

To become eligible for the dueswaiver, current members must recruitthree men to join the Society. Thoserecruited may be new members or menreinstating their membership. Studentmembers are also included in this group.

Based on the resolution that sawadopted by the Board, the plan speci­fies that:

Mark Roberts, founder of the GrossePointe, Michigan chapter and a memberof the group which, in 1940, formed thefirst District (Pioneer) east of the Miss­issippi, passed away in April, 1983. InSeptember of that year, the Grosse Pointechapter (in which Mark, though living inFlorida, retained membership until hisdeath) decided to establish an appropriatememorial to Mark. It offered to providean International trophy to be used forsuch purpose as the International boardof directors should decide.

After several suggestions, the chapterand the International Board agreed to aproposal made last August by ExecutiveDirector Hugh Ingraham that Mark becommemorated by a traveling trophy forthe seniors quartet contest. The firstSociety sponsored seniors quartet contestwas staged at the 1986 Mid-Winterconvention in Tucson, Arizona. TheGrosse Pointe chapter committee of RussSeely, Art Jones and Bill Lane, workedwith another chapter member, RayStarrette to design the trophy. in Jan·uary, the Mark Roberts InternationalSeniors Quartet trophy was presented tothe Society at the annual Uncle Sam'sNight Party hosted by the Windsor,Ontario chapter. The trophy was thengiven to Jim Gougeon, Pioneer District'sInternational Board Member for theformal presentation at the Mid·WinterConvention the following week. Attend­ing the Uncle Sam's Night presentationwere Mark's two daughters, MarciaRussell and Delores Horner, and theirhusbands Ron and Pete. Society membersfrom a number of Pioneer District chapterswere also present, including Ray McCalpin,the last active charter member of theGrosse Pointe chapter, founded in 1945.He knew Mark well during his activecareer.

Grosse Pointe has been privileged inthe past to have been involved in pro­viding other International class trophiesincluding the Society's Ben LandinoQuartet Champion trophy, as well as thePioneer District Quartet Champion tro­phy.

In addition to his extensive chapteractivities, Mark was an Internationalquartet finalist (The Detroit Turners,1942). Pioneer District president, memober of the international Contest and Jud­ging Commillee, a judge in 13 Inter·

national contests, an International treas·urer and the first secretary-treasurerof Harmony Foundation. In his sparetime, Mark was a practicing attorney

I first heard about the "Seniors" contestat the International convention in Min­neapolis and thought it was a great idea.A fun contest, especially for us 60 yearalders. My first impulse was to call myold friend Joe Daniels in California andtry a "coast to coast" quartet, but Joewouldn't be available for the January 25Tucson datel Well, maybe I could singlead. I had, for my first 18 years as aBarbershopper, but not since 1963.Deciding on a bass was easy. Ed Kellerwas singing with me weekly with theNote Wits and he's 62. How about FredSteinkamp (Lloyd's brother) for bari?After all, he'd had years of experiencewith the Note Witsl After gelling hisexhuberant acceptance, 1 called FrankLanza, myoid tenor from the FourStatesmen who thought he could stillcut two songs as tenor although he'sbeen singing bari with the Take Fourfrom Providence for three years.

Steve Delehanty, tenor of the NoteWits provided our arrangements. TomPotenza, bass of Take Four became ourcoach. Steve had done an arrangement ofa George Baggish song called "Isn't there

a way that I can stay a kid forever?" thatI was crazy about. That influenced thecostume (kids, of course) and the quartetname George Baggish Memorial Quartet.

Saturday afternoon was something else- competing again for the first time inyears, first time for this quartet beforean audience, forgetting words, speedingtempo, extra breaths, etc. Still, the ap­plause was great, they liked us and wedid have a great time. At the conclusionwe were hoping for a spot in the topthree and you never saw four happierguys when the results were announced.Applause, cameras snapping everywhere,good wishes, grinning faces - I remem·bered L.A. all over again. What a greatidea! The first Senior contest!! It's sureto grow and we'll probably see Districtpreliminaries some day.

1986 Mid-Winter Keynote Addressby Dr, Val Hicks

I appear before you today not as a cheer­leader. This will be no pep rally, You'llhear no rah·rah speech from me. I'm notpresent to tell us how great we are.There'll be none of that because I amhonestly worried about the future ofour art form. I think we have entered amid-life crisis.

In the December HARMONIZERHugh Ingraham described the life,cycle oforganizations, and art forms have Iife­cycles, too. In fact, they are remarkablysimilar to the life-cycle of voluntarysocieties such as ours. Since barbershopharmony is an authentic art form, it toohas a life-cycle,

Our youthful barbershop years con·sisted of spontaneous, vocal recreation.Unplanned, enjoyabie ear singing, Piayingwith chords, milking notes, experiment­ing with sounds. These were our forma'tive years of taking liberties with melo­dies, harmonies and rhythms. We sangfor ourselves; truly self-entertainment atits purest. As the poet wrote: "They sangof love, not of fame, each heart recalleda different name." (From Bayard Taylor's"The Song of the Camp") Dipthongs,formants, secondary dominants, and syn­ergism were foreign terms. It was actuallya form of folk music. Not art music forart's sake or for that of John G, Public,It was singing for self-amusement andself·amazement.

Our growing up years brought craft,education, judge training, better vocalhabits, more respect for song elementsand more concern for public image. Inthe 1950s and 1960s barbershop har,many groups sounded better and lookedbetter. We tried to gain the respect ofmusic educators, choral societies, andmusic critics. That we did with limitedsuccess, for our art form is neitherfish nor fowl. We don't sing art music,nor are we contemporaneous with currentpop music, and we're no longer folk art.We're a living, breathing, ever evolvingart form. As James S. Ackerman remindsus: "Art has never been static; when itis not vital, it degenerates."

The '70s and '80s brought HarmonyCollege, new judging categories, moremusic educators entering our ranks, alongwith the fledgling Young Men In Har­mony program. We began attractingyoung, talented singers, some capableof truly excellent vocal work. We refinedour techniques often borrowing ideasfrom the university campus and commer­cial recordings. Our performers andjudges, most of whom are products ofthe age of TV, placed greater emphasison the visual. In fact, we began havingcontests at which the best singing groupsdidn't win.

There were other stylistic featureswhich i'li get to shortly, but now I mustspeak of fashion versus style. Fashionsfade with the times and seasons, butstyle is always in good taste. Our concernthen is not with barbershop fashion, butwith barbershop style. For a style toendure, buffeted by an ever-changingworld, it has to have at least four quali­ties:1. It must hold an appeal for the rising

generation. An appeal which can cap­ture them as hobbyists as they mature.Our days are numbered. Who willcarryon in our stead? The torch mustbe passed. Who will carry it and towhere?

2, The elements of that style (melody,rhythm, harmony, lyrics, etc,) shouldremain in balance. That is, one ele­ment should not be featured. Har­many, lyrics, or movement/costumeshould not predominate. In a truestyle, a lasting style, the various partsof that style meld together in a uni­fied whole and no single constituentprotrudes. There is symmetry andbalance between and among the melo­dy, rhythms, chords, arranging devices,lyrics and stage presence.

3. The style endures because it doesn'tcater to that which is silly, innane,sarcastic or vulgar (some of the verythings which killed vaudeville), Thestyle should present that which islovely, praiseworthy, and challenging

to the ear, mind and eye.4, It should be within the reach of the

common man. When a style becomestoo esoteric, too complex or sophisti­cated and exclusive, it tends to alien­ate the common man of whom Abra­ham Lincoln said God must haveloved because he made so many of us.Our style should not serve an innercircle of vocal hot-shots nor should itb~ the private playground for onlythe musically trained. We must not gettoo fancy for Joe Barbershopper.

Now this last point brings me to vir­tuosity. A virtuoso is one who excels inthe technique of an art. You'll note mystress of technique. Virtuosity, then, iscomplete mastery of means and skillcoupled with energy and confidence inperformance-. During the last decadewe've been seeing and hearing some vir­tuoso-like performances from some ofour groups and on the surface it wouldseem a desirable trend. This is the prob­lem: Virtuosity tends toward flamboy,ancy, ornamentation, and display of ego.True artists subjugate their ego behindand underneath the music. They hideor disguise technique rather than flauntit. Virtuosity invades our psychic dis­tance and it becomes a matter of auraland visual "Can You Top This?" Vocalart degenerates into circus and musicalsubstance is replaced by flash, glitz andfranticism.

Historically, virtuosity brings the de­cline and fall of a style. Technique,like a little bit of knowledge, can bedangerous. Technique must always bekept in check because it is merely ameans to an end, and should not becomean end in itself. The song and its messageis always more important than the per­formers and their skill.

If unbridled display of prowess is aproblem in any art form, a second prob­lem is to control the evolution of ourstyle. You see, we've actually preservedvery little, but we have evolved a lot.Art forms cannot and should not remain

static. They're governed by opposingforces of conservatism and liberalism andbarbershop harmony in any given year isthe compromise in this musical tug-of­war. There are always within our ranksthe forces of liberalism locking hornswith the forces of conservatism.

Barbershop singing, ala 1986, then isan evolved art form, resulting from manysilent, everpresent compromises. For 48years these dynamic forces have been atwork. Firstly, there are the individuals:Your Phil Embury's, Maurice Reagan's,Bud Arberg's and S. K. Grundy's. YourMike Senter's, Lou Perry's and DaveStevens'. Then there are the hundreds ofjudges, coaches, quartet men, and chorusdirectors. Other outside forces impingeon our evolution in a more subtle way:The Sweet Adelines, Gene Puerling,radio, TV, records, movies, college pro­fessors and many other subtle agents ofchange.

The barbershop conservatist revels inthe past, for it is from his past that heshapes his present. His yesterdays dictatehis todays. He clings on valiantly to hismemories. He declares: "That's not theway O. C. Cash or Floyd Connett wouldhave done it." Innovation is his enemyand creativity an ever present threat. Histask is to somehow bring back thosegood, old days. Hc's a worry-wart. He'sbothered that Stage Presence (as a judgingcategory) has grown from 10 percent inthe 1940s to 35 percent today. He wantsmore barbcrpolecatting, more woodshed­ding and fewer contest rehearsals. He hasa vague, uneasy feeling about our musicalfuture.

The barbershop liberal on the otherhand usually lacks a strong sense of ourmusical history and grows impatient withtradition and long standing policies. Hewould agree with Mark Twain that

"Loyalty to petrified opinion neveryet broke a chain or freed a humansoul. "He loves new ideas and the past is not

sacred ground, but merely a foundationon which to build. Innovation is vital asthe liberal looks to tomorrow, just as theconservativc worships yesterday. Theliberal assumcs any song can be bar·bershopped so why not apply the style toany tune you like? Some liberals look forthe day when S.P.E.B.S.Q.S.A. willbecome an international singing society,an umbrella organization which over­sees competitions in various a cappellastyles.

I've mentioned two of my concerns

thus far. Virtuosity was one, and control·ling the pace and direction of our musicalevolution was the other. And these myfriends are real, viable challenges. How­ever, I've saved my most pressing concernfor last, and here it is.

American popular music, especiallyrock music, has become so all pervasivethat even little children are listening to it.It now caters to the pre-teen set andmany young parents are raising their kidson a steady diet of rock 'n roll. When Istarted my Masters degree at the Uni­versity of Southern California a quarterof a century ago about 16 percent ofAmerican high school students wereenrolled in band, choir or orchestra, oneout of six. Today it's below 10 percentand dropping. We are becoming a nationof musical spectators. Church choirs,school and community bands and or­chestras, and many types of amateurmusic groups are struggling to stay alive.Schools are cutting music budgets and insome schools it is now an extra·curricularactivity. In former centuries music wasconsidered as vital to culture as mathe­matics, language and science, for inreality music is a bit of each. Now it'sbeing squeezed out of the schools andboxed and packaged as a spectator/listener sport.

This has deep and serious implicationsfor our future membership. From wherewill our future members come? Fromunderneath their walkman earphones? Weneed to redoublc or even triple ourYoung Men In Harmony efforts, not asa present-day recruiting device, but as aprogram for future members, years hence.

We need to be helping local high schoolteachers get boys involved in choralmusic. Are we giving them printedmusic, supporting their concerts andoffering to coach student ensembles? Isyour chapter considered a lively musi·cal force - yes, even an artistic force ­in your community? During my 34years in the Society, barbershop has beentreated as an ugly musical stepchild ofthe community. and I'm tired of thisimage, aren't you? We have the talentand potential to become a vigorousmusical force in our communities. Inthe coming years we'll have to do thisto survive and thrive in a changing world.

Our task is not to entertain the worldlLet's leave that to Hollywood. Our taskis to get and keep more men involved ina solid, worthy vocal style called bar­bershop harmony. Let's keep our per­formances beautiful, free of excessive,egoistic ornamentations and down toearth. That's our mission. Not flash, norglitz, nor franticism, but barbershop.

Now in closing may I share with youa brief paragraph from a 1943 HAR·MONIZER?

"Only rarely does America produce ason with the ability to open the na·tion's eyes to what it has been missingin simple and wholesome pleasure thatis easily attainable. Less often doessuch a one have the generosity to sharehis vision beyond his immediate en­virons; the conviction, courage andtact to win others to his thinking;and the patience backed by drivingforce to attain an objective whichholds no pot 0' gold reward ... O. C.Cash has done more than spreadwholesome enjoyment ... He hasfurnished the means to preserve aperiod rich in American traditions.It is conceivable that his Society mayin the future be the connecting linkbetween whatever generation is cur­rent, the one preceeding it, and theone to follow, as oldsters and young­sters group in harmony."

Isn't that a wonderful thought? Asoldsters and youngsters sing together inharmony. It is my hope, even my prayer,that this may continue to be so. Thankyou.

Sunshine Stages DistrictSeniors Quartet Contest

Senior quartet contests have been talkedabout for years. In a state such as Florida,where many active Barbershoppers areenjoying their retirement years, a seniorquartet contest appeared to be just whatthe doctor recommended.

In November 1984, the Sunshine Dis·trict, which represents Florida Barber­shoppers, appointed a committee chargedwith the responsibility of bringing theproposed activity out of the realmof talk and into the realm of reality.Don Davis, of the Sarasota chapter,was appointed chairman. His committee­men were Bob Soemler of Orlando,and Mel Stone of Sarasota, all beingformer chapter presidents. If there was abudget set aside for the project, itsexistence was kept a pretty good secret.

The first question for the committee,and it was a sticky one, was what woulddetermine eligibility to compete as asenior quartet. It seemed everyone in thedistrict wanted the requirements gerry­mandered to fit his own quartet. Takinga firm stand, the committee ruled thatfor the first year at least, each quartetmember must be 55 years of age orolder. Accordingly, a letter was sent toall chapter secretaries requesting infor­mation about the quartets of their chap­ters.

The February issue of "The Sunburst,"the Sunshine District publication, carrieda notice: "Senior Quartets Wanted"with an instruction to communicate withthe committee. Letters were sent to alldistrict registered quartets, informingthem of the upcoming contest, and in­quiring regarding their eligibility. Res·ponses were received from 19 quartetswho would be eligible if they registeredas quartets and decided to compete. Inview of this response, the District offi­cers realized the interest expressed andscheduled it to be part of the upcomingquartet contest to be held in Clearwaterin October, providing the committeecould work out the details. And workedout they were I

In view of the non-existent budget,it was decided that the Seniors contestwould be run concurrently with the gen-

eral quartet contest of the district, usingthe same schedule, the same judges, thesame scoring, and even the same score­sheet, the only change being the additionof an asterisk beside the names of thequartets eligible as seniors. Then theirstandings as seniors would be their orderof finish.

In July, a letter was sent to each of theeligible quartets, suggesting that theyprepare for the special senior contest inthe fall, reminding them their quartetregistration must be up-to-date and en·closing an entry blank. However, bySeptember, Ned Fogler, chairman of thefall contest, had received applicationsfrom only three quartets. This was dis­appointing but understandable, for duringthe summer months many of Florida'sretirees travel north to visit friends andrelatives, or to enjoy the delights of travelthey could not do when they wereworking. However, the committee fol­lowed up with phone .calls to all theeligibles.

At contest time, Friday night, October18, four eligible senio.r quartets werestanding with their younger competitorsnervously listening to the judges' briefing.Then the parade through the warm-uprooms, out on the stage of Ruth EckerdHall, back to the photographer and intothe audience to hear their later competi­tors.

When the scores were announced, TheBraden·Tones of the Sarasota chapter,who came in 14th in the standings, werethe highest scorers of the seniors, andthus became 1985 Senior Quartet Champ·ions of the Sunshine District. Secondplace went to The Apollo Chords, ofBradenton, followed by the Jaxonairesfrom Greater Jacksonville, and the Har­manatees from Manatee County.

Everything worked out beautifully IThe Sunshine District pioneered a suc­cessful Senior quartet contest, possiblythe first to be held anywhere (We shallbe happy to be corrected on this). Theonly expenses, whether or not budgeted,over and above those that would havebeen spent anyhow for the district con­test, were a few letters and phone calls,

a few trophies and ribbons specificallyfor the seniors.

For other districts who may be con­sidering a senior contest, the committeechairman, Don Davis, recommends:1. That the Senior contest be held con­

currently with the regular quartetcontest to minimize work and ex­pense.

2. That the Seniors be scheduled oncea year maximum to keep it fun andnot wear off the excitement andglamour.

3. That the age "floor" of 55 be used.This is the age of most of our retire­ments, when we are finding newhomes, new friends and a new way ofliving. What could be better thangetting into a new quartet and upgrad·ing its performance via the contestroute?

4. That the Senior activity be publi·cized at the district House of Dele­gates, in the district bulletin, atCOTS, at district craft sessions, andthe HARMONIZER.

5. Local newspapers love to print storiesabout older people who are doingthings. Their readers can identifywith them, whether seniors or not.After all, we are all getting older!

In Florida we think senior quartetcontests are here to stay, and we recom·mend them heartily to other districts. 1.1

Harmony RanchA Barbershopper's Vacation Dream

Ontario Barbershoppers invite you to visitus in our vacation paradise. HarmonyRanch is 88 acres of space and includes aheated swimming pool, sauna, two tenniscourts, a members' lounge, teen lounge,picnic shelter, playing fields, horseshoepits, community campfires and a woodedarea complete with nature trails. A fea­ture attraction is our man-made MelodyPond, which provides swimming, a sandybeach, rope-swinging and an excitingwater slide, all in a picturesque setting.The property borders on the Black River,which flows into Lake Simcoe (a boatingand fishing paradise four miles down­stream). The river is ideal for canoeing,bird watching, swimming and children'sfishing.

Harmony Ranch began back in 1972.The Oshawa chapter hosted a campingweekend for Ontario Barbershoppers andit was an unqualified success. It was dur­ing this gathering that the concept ofHarmony Ranch was born and by Easterweekend of 1973 a run-down farm hadbeen purchased in Georgina Township,at Baldwin, Ontario. George Shields wasthe driving force behind the project.Clearing the land was the first chore,along with tree planting, ditch digging,building, painting, more digging, lookingfor borrowed shovels, back rubs and mostespecially, more fun than we'd had inyears.

Today the members' roster presentlynumbers 100 barbershopping families.

We have several chorus directors at Har­mony Ranch - Ray Danley and RonWhiteside of the Scarborough Dukes ofHarmony, George Shields of East York,Peter Hughes of St. Thomas, and BillTaylor of Stoney Creek. We have past andpresent quartetters from the CanadianHeritage, Four Sound Reasons, RoyalAssent, Royal Review, Rumours, SoundShop, Northland, and New Street Enter­prise, to name a few. Some 14 chaptersare represented, including far away SanDiego, California. Many wives and familymembers belong to Sweet Adelines orHarmony, Inc.

While in Salt Lake City to headline theannual Beehive Statesmen show, the 19B5International Quartet Champion, TheNew Tradition, conducted a master classsession for the Brigham Young Universitymusic department.

BYU, located 40 miles to the south inProvo, Utah has been active in developingan academic program to teach the bar­bershop style of music to students,faculty, and staff. Rollie Bestor, a 23year member of the Society and formercertified Balance and Blend judge, wasasked by the music department chairman,Newell Dayley, to audition, select, andprepare a male quartet to perform aroundUtah. Bestor is of all things, one of theathletic directors at BYU.

taught, coached, and demonstrated thebarbershop style. The 90 minute sessionwas enthusiastically received by the B3faculty, student and staff members pre·sent.

The New Tradition was visibly im­pressed with the quality of the BYUquartets with which they worked. JohnMiller, bass, said in his opening remarks,"I am extremely impressed. I had no ideathe quartets would be this strong. You doan excellent job and are to be commend­ed for your efforts."

The first official barbershop quartetto represent BYU was selected in thefall of 1981. It was an immediate suc·cess. The following year, Bestor wasasked to sample and evaluate the intereston campus for having a class to teach thisstyle of music.

A mixed chorus of 87 spent fourmonths in weekly instruction. A femalequartet was selected in February, 19B4.

The music department has approveda curriculum offering beginning in thefall semester of 19B6. Dr. Bestor willcoordinate the class.

A teaching assistantship has beencreated providing for training of teach­ers and conductors, as well as assistingBestor in the coaching of four quartetsnow performing throughout Utah. Under·graduate student John Sasine, an activeBarbershopper from Los Angeles, is thefirst recipient of the assistantship. ~

Hydration - The Key To Healthy Singingby Ron Phillips

Several years ago, traveling to a quartetshow in Fremont, Nebraska with myquartet, the River City Delegation, Ifound that laryngitis was setting in withevery mile we traveled. By the time wegot to the show, I barely had enoughvoice to croak out a few songs. We evencut my solo number.

Since we had another show to do thenext night, I immediately went to themotel and went to bed, but only aftermaking arrangements with our quartethost to get me an emergency ap­pointment with an otolaryngologist forthe next morning. That doctor worked amiracle with me. A little medicine,a little talk and a lot of advice. "Go backto the motel room, stay there and drinka glass of water every hour until yourperformance. You'll probably be fine."Then, he said something j've never for­gotten. "Stress causes dehydration anddehydration causes laryngitis."

Since I am a voice teacher, this hasbeen the most valuable tool for over­worked voices, voices with colds, etc.that I have ever worked with. For yearsnow, I have told all my singers, "Drinklots of water."

Last year I attended a workshop at theUniversity of Minnesota entitled, "TheCare And Nurture Of The Human Voice."

The main speaker was Dr. Van Law­rence, otolaryngologist with the Mac­Gregor Medical Clinic in Houston, Texas,and company physician to the HoustonGrand Opera.

SERMON ON HYDRATION

Stand in front of a mirror with yourmouth open and your tongue relaxed,Look at the pink, wet membrane whichcovers the inside of the mouth, the sidewalls of the cheek, and near the lipsthemselves. This should be a healthy pink

in color, smooth, covered with a thin,watery secretion and shiny. It should,quite simply, demonstrate the "wetlook."

Now take a deep breath or say "ah"and look at the back wall of your throat,behind the tongue. This surface normallyis irregular and dotted with small bits oforange/pink lymphoid (tonsil type) tis­sue. There will be small blood vesselsvisible on the surface between some ofthe bits of lymphoid tissue. Overlyingall of this, however, should be the sameshiny "wet look" from normal, thin,watery saliva, If this is the case, you don'tneed to read any further, and can stophere,

On the other hand, if instead of see·ing clear watery, thin mucus on thethroat wall, you see blobs of white, thickgoo which look and feel like wallpaperpaste or glue, or a combination of thetwo, and which you may have been cal­ling "post-nasal drip," thls representsa good example of what I mean by de·hydration. This thick and tenaciousmucoid secretion produces a sizzlingsound when it gets between the vocalcords during speech or singing and itwill certainly make you aware of it eachtime you swallow. Chances are also goodthat you will stop and clear your throatto rid yourself of the annoying secretionand irritate and inflame your larynxin the process,

Another parallel example: Rub yourhands together with soap and w·ater. Onepalm should pass the other with little orno friction, Dry your hands and rub themvigorously together while they are dry.Redness, warmth and friction are inevi­table. Your vocal cords vibrate and rubagainst each other approximately 256times per second on middle C. To keepone mucus membrane surface from be­coming irritated and causing frictionagainst the other, a quantity of thin lubri­cant is necessary. Approxmately 99,9%of the time, the lubricant required iscomposed almost entirely of water.

GENERAL HYDRATION:

The normal nose alone will manu­facture anywhere from a quart to aquart-and-a-half of watery thin mucusper 24 hour period. Of this enormousvolume, the majority is evaporated intothe air which one breathes in through thenose, In this way, dry room air is moist­ened and filtered and warmed by thetime it arrives at the vocal tract. Thisfluid must be replaced. In addition, thereis further fluid loss each day from exhala·tion of that moistened air and in thewaste products of the body. If the stand·ard size/weight adult were to be placedon absolute bed rest in the hospital andtotally forbidden oral intake, a replace­ment of probably 2% liters of liquid willbe necessary to keep up with this so·called "insensible loss" of water. Forall of these reasons, water is of extremeimportance in the normal functioningof the respiratory tract and of the vocaltract in particular. What to do about allthis?

ENVIRONMENTAL WATER:

During the initial space flights, NASAfound that superbly healthy astronautsput into space invariably caught coldswhile they were in the capsules. They hadbeen examined by competent physicians,evaluated by every test known, andhad been certified as healthy. Yet theycaught colds. Ultimately it was foundthat when the cabin humidity was in­creased to a minimum of 40% severalthings happened. Initially it was foundthat virus propagation was interfered with.

Most of the common respiratory tractviruses (which are now probably Jivingin a state of uneasy alliance in your ownnose and throat passages, in a so called"commensal" state), don't like moistureand don't propagate as well in its pre·sence. In the presence of a 40% humidity,nasal membranes did not dry out and theastronauts caught no more colds from

Sincethat time, 40% humidity has usually beenmaintained and the incidence of respira­tory tract difficulties, including drynessof membranes has been reduced to aminimum. How does this affect you? Geta steamer, a vaporizer, a humidifier, ora kettle of water on a hot plate in yourbedroom and run it at night. Once theroom humidity has reached 40%, yourlarynx will be happier.

Most of us are busy through the day.It is a nuisance to leave one's desk,rehearsal, or job and get a drink ofwater. Supervisors frown on frequenttrips to the bathroom. As a consequenceof those factors, and also as a conse­quence of our artificial interior climates(dry and cold with air conditioning oreven drier with steam heat in the northin the winter), water is effectively re­moved from the environment. An evenmore drastic example occurs when oneflies in a modern airplane. Pressure isadded to the cabin interior, but notmoisture. The only humidity which onegets on the standard airplane flight, Isthat moisture which is exhaled by one'scabin mates. The end result? Dehydra­tion of the first order.

Monitor your body water levels bypaying close attention to urine color.As long as what your kidneys produce istap water in color, you can be certainthat you are adequately hydrated. Takein enough wet - a pitcher on your desk,a thermos, a cola or whatever - so thatthe urine you produce resembles tapwater. If you do so, you will not need toworry about your liquid intake adequacy.As Dr. Leon Thurman from Minneapoliswould say, "Sing wet" and you should beright on. -"

Barbershop harmony is spreading acrossAustralia by leaps and bounds. The In·ternational Office recently received cop­ies of the "Barbershop Notes," the news·letter of the Western Australian Associ­ation of Men Barbershop Singers(WAAMBS).

Barbershoppers who attended the1984 St. Louis convention may remem·ber the visiting Australian quartet, TheFour Notes. One of their members,John Little, is now the first WAAMBSpresident.

Newsletter editor, Bruce Okely, an·other member of the visiting quartet,reports on WAAMB's formation, growthand future plans in its first issue.

HOW IT ALL BEGANThe formation of WAAMBS sprang

directly from the visit, in July 19B4,of the Perth male quartet, The FourNotes, to the annual S.P.E.B.S.Q.S.A.convention in St. Louis, Missouri.

The members of the quartet wereamazed at the standard achieved by thequartets and choruses performing at theconvention. The almost incredibly highlevel of sheer entertainment displayedinspired those Western Australians to thepoint where they felt bound to attemptto offer something similar to Australianaudiences.

In order to concentrate effort and gainmaximum results it was agreed to forma new quartet, comprising three membersof the old The Four Notes (Bruce Okely,lead; David Macgiil, baritone; John Little,bass) and a new tenor with Canad ianbarbershop experience, Wally Bucknell.This new quartet which specializes inbarbershop, is called Vocal Connectionand it spearheaded the formation of thechorus which is now known as Men InHarmony.

Men In Harmony commenced rehears­ing in January, 1985 and presented theirfirst concert on 14 April, 1985. The suc­cess of this concert will go into legend.(Okely reported on this concert in theNovember/December, 1985 HARMONI­ZER.)

Currently the Men In Harmony choruscontinues to grow in strength. New mem­bers have been joining since the Govern­ment House concert so that there is anominal membership of around 50 with

chorus rehearsal attendance regularlyaround 40.

The next program for Men In Har­mony will be their return to the SubiacoTheatre Centre in December. With thelarger body of singers and the added ex·perience behind it this chorus can beguaranteed to present a delightful after'noon's music on this occasion. Support­ing items will include Vocal Connection.The Truine Four, The Morley VLQ andThe Sentimental Blokes.

SPREADING THE WORDThe task of encouraging barbershop

singing on a wider scale has been accept­ed by WAAMBS. This means trying tocontact the barbershop fans elsewherein the States and then in the rest of Aus­tralia. Reading, Pennsylvania Chapter RecallsPerformance at 1977 B.A.B.S. Convention

The Reading, Pennsylvania chapter wassurprised to read the story about theBanks of the Wabash Chorus' trip to the19B5 B.A.B.S. convention, and theirclaim that they were the first Societychapter to arrange such a trip. Our chap­ter made a similar trip to the B.A. B.S.convention - in 1977.

Let us start at the beginning, whichfor us was 1975. Gerry Holland, a pilotfor British Airways and 1977 chairman(president) of B.A.B.S., was a resident ofReading, England. He decided to contactour president, Leo Braun to set up a vi­sit between the sister cities. Many of hisflights brought him to Philadelphia,which is only 50 miles from us, so inAugust, 1975 Gerry made the trip toReading on the train. Our entire chorusmet him at the station with a singingreception, thus starting a long and lastingfriendship.

From the very beginning it was feltthat our two chapters should get to·gether. Plans were started by our chapterto go to England in 1976, but this ar·rangement proved to be a little too shorton time. After that we changed the dateto 1977. Our trip committee was headedby Harold Breisch, and after much cor·responding, between the two chapters wewere ready to go.

But before we visited England we be·came hosts for an English quartet. At thetime, the Barry Tones were reigningB.A.B.S. quartet champion and theywere invited to sing at the 1977 Inter·national convention in Philadelphia.Through our correspondence with theReading, England chapter, we learnedof their visit and invited the quartet andwives to Reading, Pennsylvania. Theyaccepted our invitation and spent a fewdays with us, being housed by some ofour members. The visit was highlightedby an outdoor party, attended by ap·proximately 300 people. Reading Mayor,Joseph Kusminski, presented the four­some with the key to the city.

Barry Nowell, bass of the quartet,was employed by the Reading, EnglandEvening Post as an overseer in the com­posing room. Being interested in news­paper work, they visited our local news·paper. Barry presented the managing

editor of the Reading Eagle a montage,depicting 75 years of public transporta­tion in Reading, England.

Our trip to England happened in Sep·tember. On a Saturday afternoon an en­tourage of approximately BO peopleboarded two busses and headed for NewYork's Kennedy Airport. From there weflew to Heathrow Airport in England.British Airways had even acknolwedged aspecial request we made and scheduledGerry Holland to be our pilot. I'll neverforget being roused out of a sound sleepabout 3:00 a.m. by tap on the shoulder,and being told that Gerry wanted to seeme in the cockpit. When I asked him whyhe summoned me, Gerry replied, "ifI don't sleep, nobody sleeps." I thinkhis original intent was to do some wood­shedding, but he thought better of it,since some of the crew were sleepingoutside the cockpit.

Upon our arrival in England, we wereescorted by bus to the Russell Hotel inLondon. There we were greeted by theBerkshire Barbershoppers of Reading,England. There was food, liquid refresh·ment and lots of singing before webroke up and went to our rooms, all ofus feeling the iet lag. We spent two daysin London, and then on Wednesdaymorning traveled to Reading, Englandfor a combined chorus rehearsal. We werescheduled to present a show in theirtown hall that evening. Prior to the showwe had a small pre·glow in the mayor'schambers, and were greeted by MayorBill Mander and his wife.

The evening went off beautifully,with both choruses and their quartetssinging, and then a combined chorussing under the direction of Barry Nowell.On stage that evening we were presentedwith the Jubilee Chamberpot by theirchairman Pete Powell, and we recipro·cated with a plaque, depicting the com­mon bond of these sister cities.

Thursday was a sightseeing day, andthen Friday morning all aboard forLeicester and the annual British Associ­ation of Barbershoppers convention. Wewere pleased and privileged to sing on theconvention stage both evenings. I don'tknow if things have changed in the en­suing years, but this was an experience I

shall cherish forever. These people knewhow to conduct a convention, withouttaking themselves too seriously, and hav­ing a great deal of fun with it all. At thattime they had their male and femaleBarbershoppers competing on the sameweekend at a common place. I don'tknow if this has changed, but it surewas wonderful with the families beingtogether. This is truly what barbershop­ping is all about, a family hobby.

The Saturday evening afterglow was anemotional experience. Whoever came upwith the idea that the British are con­servative and reserved could not havebeen thinking of Barbershoppers. Theyare as congenial as anyone I have evermet. When it was time to leave that night,they formed a double line, there washugging and kissing, and I don't believe adry eye in the place. Back to the hoteland a few 110urs of sleep, before half of usleft for home, and the other half tookoff for Germany, Austria and Switzer­land.

We continued to correspond, and hadmany visits from Gerry Holland. Thenin 1982, one of our members, JohnRickenbach, had a brainstorm which wepursued. John felt it would be a greatidea to have a truly international showwith the title "It's A Barbershop World."So with the help of Gerry, acting as ourEuropean contact, we lined up ourheadliners. Gerry was able to interest the19B1 B.A.B.S. quartet champion, Re·gency Pride, in performing in the states.The quartet and wives spent two weekshere, with Reading as home base. We thenwent across our international border andbooked the 19B1 Ontario District QuartetChampion, Jubilation. At this point ourbudget wouldn't budge anymore, so itwas decided to represent the U.S.A. withour local quartets.

The English group was housed byour members, and a finer group ofladies and gentlemen you never met.They stayed with us foilowing our show,accompanying us on a mystery bus tripto one of our sister chapters, Lebanon,Pennsylvania. Here again was a veryemotional parting, and was proven onceagain, no matter where you come from,

The North Pennsmen of the Lansdale,Pennsylvania chapter entertained highschool students and their parents at thePennsylvania Music Educators Associ­ation District XI Chorus Festival duringFebruary.

The Lombard, Illinois West TownsChorus performed at the illinois StateAmerican Choral Directors Associationconvention in November, 19B5. Thechapter also notes it now has 13 father·son singing combinations, including afather and two sons.

The Vocal Majority of Dallas, Texassang "No Place But Texas" for theirnational television debut on the NewYear's Cotton Bowl Parade. They alsosang the national anthem at the CottonBowl for the football game. CBS radionetwork listeners around the world heardtheir pre-game performance. The VMalso performed for the North AmericanHeating and Air Conditioning WholesalersAssociation in December, 19B5.

The Defiance, Ohio chapter North­westernaires Chorus presented a show aspart of the Napolean, Ohio communityconcert series. The chapter's membershipof about 70 members represents 22 dif·ferent communities in' the Defiancearea.

The Texas state capitol building inAustin was the site of a mass sing-induring the fall division contest. Morethan 300 Barbershoppers gathered aroundthe seals of the nations which depict thecoat of arms of the five nations of whichTexas has been a part. 1986 is Texas'sesquicentennial, marking 150 years sincegaining independence from Mexico.

The massed singers were directed byBob Foley and Steve Keiss of Austin,and John Devine of Houston. Mac Huffalso directed the San Antonio chapter ina trilogy of songs about Texas. The TexasGentlemen, a San Antonio chapter quar­tet, also performed.

Mo Rector, two-time Internationalquartet champion, introduced one of thespectators, Vickie Lowrance, America's19B5 Junior Miss. Her father, a memberof the New Braunfels chapter, was oneof the assembled singers,

Local television station KTVV coveredthe sing-in for their evening news pro­gram.

Mark Rusch, music director of theAtlanta, Georgia chapter, recently mount­ed his special license plate - SPEBSQ.(Georgia only allows six digit licenseplates.1 He reports that within the firstweek of its installation he had a numberof people ask him what it represented.Following their conversation he tooktheir names for their show mailing list.

Far Western District Wins TopAchievement Award Honors

The Far Western District received the topaward in recognition of their 1985achievements. Their first place finish wasfollowed by the Mid-Atlantic District insecond place, and Seneca Land District inthird, Far Western placed fourth in 1984,Mid-Atlantic repeated last year's secondplace finish, and Seneca Land moved upfrom sixth place.

The contest is a means to determinethe kind of chapter activity taking placeduring the year. Achievement pointsare awarded for each district's net mem­bership gain, choruses and quartets incompetition, number of chapters holdingmembership guest nights, use of theBarberpole Cat program, chapters char·tered, number of chapters with 50 ormore members, officers attending Chap·ter Officer Training Schools, delegatesattending district house of delegates'meetings, and chapters publishing regularbulletins. To place all districts at the samelevel, the total score achieved is dividedby the number of chapters in the districtto ascertain the district's final score.

The seminar, fundedby Harmony Foundation, is held everytwo years and serves as a way to educatethe chairmen about the Institute of Logo­pedics. Reedie Wright, Logopedics andService Committee chairman, conductedthe seminar.

The agenda for the seminar includedpresentations by the International com­mitteemen; a session by Larry Hagerson,business and development division direct­or, on financing the Institute of Logope­dics; an explanation and presentation ofthe S.P.E.B.S.Q.S.A. editor's kit whichhas been prepared by Institute staff;and a session about how paperwork isprocessed in Kenosha and at the Insti­tute, given by Ruth Marks and LarryHagerson.

The chairmen and committeemen wereshown the Institute's facilities. The tourwas highlighted with demonstrations,presentations, and a visit to severalclassrooms where Institute students greet­ed the men.

After the tour, the chairmen andcommitteemen were given the oppor­tunity to experience the Institute's resi-

dential program. They ate lunch withresidential students and child care work­ers in the students' apartments on thegrounds.

The seminar also included the presen­tation of a check for $160,000 to FrankR. Kleffner, Institute of Logopedicspresident and chief executive officer,on behalf of S.P.E.B.S.Q.S.A. The moneyrepresents funds raised for the Instituteby the Society in addition to the pledgedamount for 19B6.

The seminar attendees conducted aspecial fund raising project while at theInstitute. The men raised $102 duringthe weekend. The money was raised byputting a dollar in a jug every time amistake was made by one of the chair­men. These included making smart re­marks, bragging, interrupting ReedieWright, and singing the wrong wordsduring one of many song sessionsl

The money was given to the Instituteto establish a memorial for Lois Harring­ton. Harrington was the administrativeassistant for Larry Hagerson. She died inan airplane accident January 11, 1986.
