Message from the President’s Pen

Presidents Words

What a great start to this Presidents’ year! I wish to congratulate once again all the recipients of the Pilgrim Degree this year. Several of us traveled to Mooseheart for founders’ Day Weekend. Denice and I helped at the haunted house, we had several volunteers who also assisted – Dan and Janet Cassleman, Debbie Palmer, Charles Snyder, Sean Smith and his wife and kids including a four-week-old Obie and Gail plus Gails’ sister. My daughter Trina and husband Steve attended for the first time. We were given the opportunity to participate in the Reverse Trick-or-Treat for the kids – this is where we deliver candy to the homes instead of them coming to us. We had a great time visiting six different homes at Mooseheart and it took us just over an hour to do these. This is such a special time for each one of these kids. After the Trick-or-treat we went back to the haunted house – all those who had spent their time fixing up the haunted house were able to sit and watch. from the moment the kids entered we heard screams . . . all thru the house we heard screams. Then the exit door swung open and the kids came running out, we didn’t know whether to laugh or cry! One boy, around eleven, rounded the corner and I heard him repeat out loud “I’m not scared, I’m not scared, I’m not scared” – he was desperately trying to convince himself that he was not scared! We also had a tall young man go thru that would laugh out loud then scream like a school girl over and over again. The State Presidents from Ohio and Michigan were asked to speak to the Football Team before the playoff game. I will cherish this moment forever. The boy’s went out and played well and won the game. I did not stay on the field the entire game because I was frozen. It was so cold out but we all had a great time. We also had about ten Members that had never been to Mooseheart before. They picked the perfect opportunity to see where and how they help the kids by keeping their Memberships up to date. This was a brief overview of the weekend, and how much fun we really have. I need to take a moment and ask for your help as a Moose Member, Lodge, Legion or Chapter. I would like to see all Moose Units of the Fraternity in the state of Michigan to make a $100 donation to support Founders’ Day Weekend. It would be great to have this donation before the August, 2013 Convention. By doing so you help us to continue to make this weekend spectacular for everyone. I know things are tough on the Lodges, but what about having a “drop your change jar” at the bar, or doing a special 50/50 and maybe a special request in your newsletter for your Members to donate. You never know who might just step up and help this cause . . . until you ask. If we did everything we are capable of we would literally astonish ourselves..

My Brothers and sisters:

here we are in the holiday season of another year and we begin to wonder where did 2012 year go. What did we do. What did we accomplish. Before we look back, I want to wish everybody a very Merry Christmas and a happy healthy New Year. And may the New Year be good to all of you! Well here we go. Did I sign two Members to get my dues paid for next year? Well remember we have to April 30th 2013 to do this. Did I sign five new or former Members to get in the Five Club for next year? Did I sign four Members to get a Windbreaker from the Michigan Moose Association, and did I sign four more to get a Windbreaker for my lady? or can I sign 25 Members and get into the Circle of Distinction? Did I sign 25 Members in the last 3 years so I could get a beautiful watch from Moose International? These are questions the every Man or Women of the Moose must ask themselves. If you didn’t do these things remember you have until April 30th 2013 to do this. That means we have a little over four month to look back and see if we have to work a little harder in the next few months to get the job done right. So let’s all work together to get this done so when we go to the next Convention and they have a five Club or 25 Club party we can be on the inside looking out instead of on the outside looking in at all the fun they are having. Then look at it this way. Membership is the back bone of our Lodge. What does Membership do? Well it pays the light bill, the gas bill, the telephone bill and all the other merchandise that we use in our Lodges so we can operate the way we're supposed to. With all these things in mind, with a good Board of Officers and good Chapter Officers working together, we can do what we have to do. To make our operations a successful one. We must also have

a good Community Service and Retention committee working also. We also need a VERY important Family Activities committee. Things are a little tough right now, so we need good committees to think of things for people to do, so they want to come to the Moose. Whatever you do you have to advertise what's going on. If you don’t have enrollments think about having one every once in a while. We have one about every six weeks. The last one had 16 new candidates, but we had about 150 people in the room. afterwards we fed them a good roast beef dinner. I had three new Members come up and tell me “we sure liked the orientation and enrollment”. One Member came up and said he had been a Member three years and he learned more that night in the last three years. Another Member said now he knows what the Moose is all about! I had many good times in the Moose. I had one Thanksgiving day when we served 147 elderly people 65 and over for free. But it was also profitable as we sold 157 dinners for $8.50 adult or $4.00 for children. We also had a very good group of volunteers both men and women and teens cleaning up, washing dishes and setting up tables. So when we put it all together the dinner didn't cost us a thing, in fact we made a little! God bless all of you and have a happy Holiday season.

hello co-Workers –

So far so good. I’ve been having so much fun going to all the new Pilgrim Conferrals and College meetings. Avon-Rochester Chapter was my first College Celebration. Their hospitality was awesome. Then it was off to the Ann Arbor Chapter where I was asked to be their guest speaker, what an honor, how excited I was. Getting down to crunch time, we realized we had made a wrong turn and were headed for Indiana. We called and apologized and told them to go on with out us and we would get there as soon as we could. Eighty miles later, we pulled into the Ann Arbor Moose parking lot. Everyone welcomed us with open arms. I asked their new Collegian, Marilyn Tower if I could still address the Co-Workers while they were eating. Their hospitality was out of this world. Thanks to everyone at the Ann Arbor Moose. Then the next day we drove to the Grand Blanc Moose for their College Celebration where they honored a new Collegian and performed a Red Tassel Ceremony. The next weekend we drove to the Evart Moose and they performed the Red Tassel ceremony and also the Red Stole ceremony. A very nice and friendly place. Not to mention,

the hillsdale Moose Lodge # 921 is pleased to announce the results of our fund raiser for the North Adams Jerome Girls Basketball Program. Two hundred raffle tickets were sold to supporters from all over this area. According the events chairperson, Doug Dospoy, the girls themselves were key to events outcome. By 9:30 pM on saturday night the charity event had awarded over $2500 in cash and prizes to the participants, and was able to send the North Adams Jerome Lady Rams home with a check exceeding $3300. A large number of those attending decided to stay around and enjoy the free entertainment until well past midnight. As always an event like this requires many hours of dedicated work and the Board of Officers thank each and everyone of you. another fun activity at Lodge #921 on Broad street, across from the Fair Grounds is an old-fashioned “Feather Party”. This event is basically a food raffle, participants can buy a $1 chance on the giant wheel of feathers and possibly win food and other prizes. Items awarded for this included:

In July, the Loyal Order of Moose and the Women of the Moose both announced year-end gains in active membership during the 2012 Annual Convention, with the Moose Legion just missing the mark. o keep this positive momentum going, the Supreme Council has authorized General Governor Steve Greene to issue a blanket dispensation to waive all membership application fees for the three fraternal units to begin on December 17, 2012 through April 30, 2013. No application fee will be required for any membership application transmitted to Moose International between 12:01a.m. (Cst) Monday, December 17, 2012, and 10:00 p.m. (Cst) tuesday, april 30, 2013 (provided the application received date is on/or after December 17.) Completed applications must be remitted with full first-year dues. additionally, applicants must be reported as “enrolled” by 10:00 p.m. on Friday, May 31, 2013, otherwise, the fraternal unit will be retroactively billed for all applications reported during the $0 application fee incentive period, but not enrolled prior to May 31.

the best meat loaf. Our final two Celebrations are now behind us. The Wayne Chapter hon-ored their new Collegian and performed the Red Tassel Ceremony on Saturday where we had a great time with everyone there. On Sunday, we went to the Otsego Moose where their Chapter honored their new Collegian and Red Stole recip-ient. At the Otsego Lodge we were welcomed by so many friendly people. Thank you very much. Now, Co-Workers, remember to go out and let everyhone know about the Moose so everyone will have “heard of Moose”. Our Conference in March is the 7-10. Frankenmuth will again be our host. And ladies, our Official Visitor is going to be Barb McPherson. Come out and join us for a fun filled weekend. See Everyone Soon.

turkeys, hams, roasts, and all of the items needed for your holiday feasts. The proceeds from this fund raiser are dedicated towards our 6th annual free Community Dinner scheduled for Sunday December 2nd. Last years free dinner drew a crowd of over 300 hungry souls. The Feather Party was very successful in adding to the coffers for our 6th annual Free Community Dinner. This event raised over $700 for this worthy cause. the hillsdale Lodge 921 also sponsored a money auction or Cash Raffle to help the Wildcat Football team at Pittsford Michigan Schools. The entire 200 ticket allotment was sold out thanks to the efforts of the Moose voluteers and the coaching staff of pittsford schools. the high School Principal, T.G. Cook is our current Treasurer and he was able to take a check for over $3400 back to work on Monday morning.

“The Best Use of Lights”! All totaled there were over 112 units in the parade.

Wertz Warriors Fundraiser, October 6, 2012Eleven teams were signed up to play, but because of the weather, only 36 players showed up.

the Maternity house at Mooseheart opened last september and they have housed 6 teen mothers since then. The residents come from local high schools. they attend parenting classes and job training while they are at Mooseheart. If the resident wants to have their child adopt-ed, Mooseheart will help them with that. The house supervisors and sometimes Mht family parents will watch the babies while the girls at-tend school. They have not worked out a program if the residents want to enroll their babies in Mooseheart, but they are working on that. St Clair Shores Chapter and District 4 have decided to support the Maternity house and District 4 recently donated 3 car seats and St Clair Shores chapter bought 3 car seat “bundlers”. Our chapter is having a “Baby Shower” event in April and we are donating all the baby items to the Maternity house and we will buy the rest of the items on the list. It looks like they give the residents the car seats when they leave, and one was given a pack and play to use as a bed. We plan on filling their wish list on a continuing basis. New Computer To Help State Police Check Internet

PredatorsWith six kids, Jennifer Glenn of Dimondale has plenty to worry about and with most of them old enough to use a computer, she knows there is a chance they could be contacted by a stranger online.

That has already happened to her 15-year-old, Jordan.

“People chatting with me on Facebook an Yahoo...I have no idea who they are,” said Jordan Glenn. “You just want to be careful.”

In many cases, those strangers can be sexual predators looking to meet up with unsuspecting children. In fact, they often frequent the same websites as children.

It is the job of the Michigan State Police Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force to go after those predators. On Tuesday, the Michigan Moose Association, in partnership with the Safe Surfin' Foundation, presented the Task Force with what is called a “Cop-in-a-Box”.

Safe Surfin – Cop in a Box“Cop-in-a-Box” is high-tech com-

puter equipment designed by the U.S. Department of Justice to help detectives investigate child exploitation crimes.

“What these devices do is they actually uncover forensic evidence from suspect media,” said Sgt. Jay Poupard, a member of the ICAC Task Force. "If we were to seize a suspect's cell phone or computer, then we conduct forensics on those devices."

Police will then take the storage device and plug it into the back of the computer tower and make a copy of its contents.

Detective Chris Prevette, who works on a lot of child exploitation cases, says this hardware will help speed up investigations.

“We'll be able to do two cases in the time it used to take us to do one,” said Prevette.

Jennifer Glenn is all police seizing electronic storage devices if it means protecting children from predators.

“If you've crossed that line and become a sexual predator, then you've lost the privilege and the right to have that privacy for yourself,” said Glenn.

According to the FBI, there are more than 40,000 chat rooms and that are frequented by sexual predators and there is a 100 percent chance a child will meet one of those predators if they enter a chat room.
