Windermere Lakes - Fishing Rules & RegulationsWindermereLakesallowsonlyCATCHandRELEASEfishing.FishingisforWLResidentsandtheirguests.GuestsshouldbeaccompaniedbyaWLResidentatalltimesCompliancewithTexasParksandWildlifelicensingrequirements,rulesandregulationsisrequiredbyallpersons.Circlehooksmustbeusedforalllivebaitfishingandfish.Absolutely no catching of fish by nets or any other suchdevices.Noexoticfishsuchasaquariumfishorfishcaughtinotherrivers,lakesorpondsshouldbereleasedinWindermereLakes.Disposeofalltrash,baitcontainers,picnicmaterialsandfishinglineinaresponsiblemanner.Swimming and diving in the lakes is unsafe and strictlyprohibited.Childrenshouldbemonitoredatalltimeswhilefishingornearthe lakes. Incaseofemergencycall9-1-1.Ifthereareconditionsonthelakeswhichshouldbecorrected,please contact theHOABoard throughwindermerelakes.netimmediately.

Where’s the best fishing in the lake? YearsagoIwatchedwithenthusiasmasWindermereLakeswasbeingbuilt.AsaSteeplechaseresidentIwatchedthelakesbeingdug,thebulkheadsbeingbuiltandtheneighborhoodactuallycometolife.IproudlybecamearesidentofWindermereLakes. Whenthe lakesweredugandbegan tofill, Inoticed therewaslittlestructureorplacesforfishtohidefrombiggerfish.Thislackofstructureisbydesign.Structureinthelakecanactasanchorpointsforaquaticvegetationandotheruglinessthatwoulddetractfromthelakebeauty.Becausethelakedoesn’thavestructureinthemiddle,thedocksinthelakeandtheculvertsbetweenthelakesactasfishmagnets.Thesearedefinitelythebestplacestotakeyourselforyourchildrentohavealittlesummerfunfishing. The lakes are stockedwith fish that have been purchased asfingerlings fromfish hatcherieswhichwill grow into largerfish.TheHOApurchasesfishtobalancetheentirelakeecosystemwhicharelowcost,yetbigenoughtoensuresurvival.Currentlythelakesincludecatfish,sunfishandlargemouthbass. Theabilityofthedockstoconcentratefishandthestockedfishfactorcouldallowfishermentotakesubstantialvaluefromthelakeiffishwerekeptordamageduponreturntothelake.Thereareseveralstepswhichresidentscantaketoinsurethegoodfishingwillremainaftertheirfishingexcursion. Residentsshouldreturnallfishtothelakeasquicklyaspossibleaftercatching.Reminder,allourlakesarecatchandreleaseonly.Thelongerafishisoutofthewater,themoretheprotectiveslimeonthefishdriesandisexposedtopotentialdamage.Thisslimefilmprotectsthefishbykeepingbacteriaorviruses thatmightbe in thewaterfromattackingtheskinofthefish.Fishshouldbehandledaslittleaspossiblewhileextractingthehook.Itisespeciallybadtoallowthefishtolayonthedockorbottomofaboatwhileremovingthehook.Thebestwaytoremovethehookistowetyourhandspriortohandlingthefish,andthenextractthehookasgentlyaspossible.Handlingthefishwithdryhands,lettingthefishlayonthedockorhandlingthefishwithglovesoratowelseriouslydamagestheprotectiveslime.EventhechoiceoffishhookcanplayagreatpartinprotectingthefishingresourceswehaveatWindermereLakes.Circlehooks,asdefinedbytheAtlanticStatesMarineFisheriesCommissionare“anon-offsethookwiththepointturnedperpendicularlybacktotheshank.”Thesehooksdon’trequiretheanglertosetthehook,andmorethan98%ofthetimeresultinthefishbeingcaughtinitsjaw.Thistypeofhookeliminatesdeephookingwhichcanresultindamagewhenthehookisremovedfromthefish.Whilethesehookslookalittlegoofy,circlehookswillimproveyourcatchratioandalmostguaranteethefish
