SOCIAL NEWSPresident Brian Hagarty and secre

tary Norm Sharpe enjoyed the ho,pitality of VFL reserve umpires atheir smoke night . Perhaps this iwhy they got extra training the following day .

At least one umpire was pleased hfollowed instructions of adviser Ma ;Barker and carried two whistles .

Congratulations to the umpires selected to control the recent Australiaiinter-varsity carnival held at Monas]University, interstate players werloud with their praise .

V .A.F.A. supporters may be int rFsted to learn our "knights of th ,

whistle", officiate at all matches cantrolled by the Public Schools, associated grammar schools and high schoocompetitions.

No names - no pack drill - b,uthe writer hopes the two umpires concerned are more alert on the field -than when they are passing over roacamphometers .Just in fun -Overheard at football game (no .

V .A .F .A.) player was discussing umpire, with member of the umpire' :appointment board .

Player - "do you have trouble getting umpires? Where do they comffrom?"

Official - "Hell! no we just wailuntil parking attendants get marriecand have sons and we make therrumpires . "

If all St . Kilda players showed thesame determination all day thatMaurie Bilston has shown all season.we would not be among the alsorans. Week after week, Mocca's fineplay in the centre, despite the buf-feting he receives from bigger andless talented opponents, keeps us inthe game when the side is flounderingagainst tough opposition . Keep up thegreat work Maurie and the best andfairest trophy is yours .

BALL BRIEFSGood to see Peter Phillips back in

action with Ivanhoe, especially insuch good form so soon after a longlay-off. With speedsters Darryl Kellyand Neville Henderson killing them onthe wings, the 'Hoes can at least feelconfident about their centre line inthe games to come.

Peter "Chaffey°f McInerney has tak-en over the pivot for Ormond like aveteran and will be hard to displaceon his form. Another improver isDamien Grace in the ruck, not muchof him but good to see him puttingthese very serviceable games to-gether .

MHS veteran of over 270 games"Jocka," Nelson, putting in his usualenormous game was seen coming offthe field last Saturday with his nosebleeding and at right-angles to hisface. Upon asking °`Jocka" will thisput him out for a few weeks he re-plied, "no but it will help me drink myglasses of beer easier and will begreat for sniffing around corners" .

Once again De La's Paul Mitchellplayed a great game in the reserves,it would probably be one of his bestperformances, he certainly deservedthat trophy. Surely Paul must bepressing for firsts selection .

After a frustrating run of defeatsin VAFA games, most of UniversityBlues tasted victory once more whenMelbourne came through undefeatedto win the intervarsity championshipat Monash . The star of the series wasBlues' captain Barry Church who ledthe side brilliantly . Barry won thebest and fairest trophy by one votefrom another Blues player Mike Nich-olls, and was chosen as captain of theAll-Australian universities team. Be-sides these two . Blues forward DavidBarkley and Blacks Chris Cordner andIan Duffy were chosen in the. com-bined team .

Following John Elderfield's l00games last week, still another mile-stone has been reached by a NorthOld Boy player - this time 50 gamesto Kevin Meredith . Kev joined theclub the year after its inception in1964, and since that time has shownhis worth as a clubman and a playermany times over, even when timeswere tough, Congratulations Kev,from all at the club and we hopeyou'll be around for many more gamesto come .

Footscray's Barry Chapman dideverything asked of him last week . Af-ter being shifted to the back line"Chappo" took his opponent out ofthe game. Also good to see GraemeScott return to form, Graeme, be-cause of studies has been restrictedin his football activities however, hehas still gained selection in the Statetraining squad. Congrats. from theclub, "Scotty".

Congratulations to Kevin Phelan onhis fine first game performance withSt. Bernards against Kew last Satur-day. Although relatively new to theclub, Kev fitted in to the side's patternof play very well and looks set for afine future.

The Alphington golf day was a hugesuccess . Nobody knew how the prizeswere allotted or why, but as PercAdams won the major trophy (achook that Tassie Browne ran overon the way), there were no loud com-plaints .

OM's firsts had a disappointinggame last Saturday. Pete Robersonplayed a great game on his half-for-ward flank showing brilliant markingskill and agility . Russell Weir seemedto relish the fact that he only had togoal umpire for two quarters - hehasn't roved better and Pete Rattraygave him great support . Rob Thomp-son played a true captain's game andRob "Bulldog" Mackay never gave inagainst overwhelming odds .

Page 14 THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER-June 6, 1970

Sall Briefs - continuedCarley Ventura takes the field to-

day for his 50th Commonwealth Banksenior game. This is Carl's fourthseason with the club, and he has sel-dom put in a shocker . For determinedplay he has no peer so we hope tohave "Onions" with us for many atraining night to come ,

Old Carey Reserves coach Ian Us-tick made a comeback last Saturdayagainst Power House, although hehasn't played for about 2 years hesoon showed he had not lost his oldskill and won many kicks at full back .However, Ian says one game now isenough. It's much easier coachingfrom the sidelines .

Congratulations to Bob Pollock whoplays his 5th game for Old Haileybur-ians today. "Poll, who is possibly thesmallest player in C Section has prov-a great clubman both on and off thefield .

A more happy coach than Assump-tion Reserves' Lindsay "Silver Tongue

' Howard would have been hard tofind last Saturday . Showing a little.more dedication than in other weeksthe Blues came from behind to takea well deserved victory . Players togive drive were, Noel O'Connell whocontrolled the centre, Jimmy Mordenwho burnt off the opposition, PeterHeath and Ewan Phyland who gavethe side an edge in the air and Fred"The Wharfies' Mate" Hughson whotopped off a strong game at centrehalf back with a long goal on the run .

Coll-Lngians offer their sincerest bestwishes to senior coach Peter Falconerand his charming wife Ann on thebirth of their daughter Elizabeth Ann,this week both mother and daughterare doing well, another future mem-ber of the afternoon tea brigade .

Ronny Seath, UHS Old Boys rover, playing his first full game with theseniors showed he will be a great as-set to the side. His pace around the

packs gave the side great drive andhis two goals in the first quarter setthe side going . It was unfortunateRon collected a whack behind the earin the third quarter and have to leavethe field .

Happiness is a win, and there weresome wide smiles at Toor.onga-Mal-vern after their first win of the seas-on. The reason for the success was ateam effort, but players like GavanBrady, Alan Cockerell, and Ian Downswere outstanding . Rod Franklin dida good job in his new role as fullforward, and as well supported byMick Parker and Noel Graham. We'reoff the bottom now fellers, and let'smove up another rung today .

AMP Reserves came back after anupset loss the previous week andscored a comfortable victory. It's hardto write while one's arm is beingtwisted but I am forced to write that"Cec" Ruddell was best on the groundturning in a sparkling display in de-fence and on the ball . Actually Ithought Alan Saxby just shaded himwith a dashing game at the pivot .Others to do more than their sharewere "Mouse" Sirianni, return to form,"Blossie", actually gave handpasses,"Jerker" as usual and Steve, Carr indefence.

John "Dinger" Stensholt played his50th game with St . Kevins Old Boyslast week . "Dinger" is probably thekeenest member of the football club- a committeeman for the past threeyears, club secretary last year and en-thusiastic player. Although not themost talented player in the club he isan example to all in his approach tothe game and the club . Congratula-tions "Dinger" .

Cliff "Whiskers" Berms really burnedfor Brunswick last week his threegoals on the run were real gems, keepit up Cliff .

Ball Briefs - continuedOld Trinity's reporter has heard of

several disturbing marital repurcus-sions this week . Dennis Cox has beenfound at his neighbours watching T .V.while b.ride of two weeks is doing thewashing Dick Curtis failed to reachthe practice match on Sunday until 12noon (married 2 weeks) . George Fel-lows last week was careless, thisweek carless, Jim Charge now back instayers stakes after rushed overseastrip by bird . Chris and Penny Hensestill looking for foster home for goateating dog. As for Dick Dart's com-ments on Saturday night - well?? ?

Spellbound! No it's not a movie ad .It's how we all were at Fairfield lastSaturday night . We all saw "Bones"Hume with a bottle of soft drink! Me-thinks it was for Leah, but there isalways that nagging doubt. Evenworms have been known to turn, butLarry and soft drink, that's impossible!

Two players returned to the Park-side senior side last week and man-aged to score the goals that made thedifference . Back, fit, well and rested,Maurice "Jacko" Jackson at full for-ward only scored two majors and itis expected that he will play muchbetter today. It must be pointed outthat Maurie has just returned fromhis honeymoon, and all Parksiderswould like to congratulate him andhis good lady on their marriage, butthe supporters would also love to seehim handle the ball on more occasionsthis week . On the other hand MarioSummut killed the opposition aroundthe acks to be named amongst thePark-side best . Though small in size,Mario has a heart bigger than a race-horse which he is when he bores infor the ball and at last he was re-warded for his efforts by being ableto score six pointers twice .

Much jubilation in St . Pat's (Ball)camp last week after a brilliant fightback coming from seven goals down

at half time to snatch victory on thebell. Brian and Agnes Walsh verykindly played hosts afterwards at atremendous B .B .Q. our thanks to allconcerned .

Glenhuntly's best were Barry"Flags" Ford, Cliffy "Stats" Hayesand Davil "Twinkle-Toes" Lee . BrianBolt played with dash all day - Nath-an and Nolan tried all day, but lesssaid the better . Neil Alman led thereserves with a great display of back-ing up and determination .

Strong play by Ray Street who waswell backed up by Jock Sellers, PeterSharpe and new boy Greg "The Fly"Walters enabled Elsternwick to takeout four points against Old Ivanhoe .The reserves notched up another finewin due to great team work by play-ers like Gary Eaton, Grant Williams,Ian Ramsay and Ian "Big Red" Stonerjust to mention a few .

Tremendous games by Stephen"Legs" Taubert, Ross "Gutsy" Dur-ham, Stephen "Hans" Haas and Garry"Sleepy Young enabled the rovers tomove the ball rapidly forward forMelbourne High Juniors against OldParadians last week. Let's hope thefoursome continues in this fashion .

Sad news at R.O.B.'s last week,Robin Laird is unable to play for therest of the season . We will sure miss"Whiskers" and his strength on theback line this year . Many thanks forall you have done for the club Robinand we hope you will continue tokeep up the good work with your co-partner Bull Letson .

Andrew Lingard on the half forwardline gave Tooronga-Malvern Juniorsplenty of drive in last week's win .Steve Doran and Wayne Stokes werevery effective, on the back line, RayMartin and Liev Zobie gave their verybest as usual, and Perc Perkins fol-lowed well all day .

Page 18 THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER-June 6, 1970

Ball Briefs - continuedDuncan "Buth" MacCannum played

another great game in the ruck lastweek for Old Camberwell . Dick Hew-itt really turned it on at centre halfback with a great exhibition of highmarking and long kicking . Dave Tuck-er was as safe as a house on the backflank again and Glen Foster was ineverything on the forward flank . Allin all a handy win for Old Camberwelllast week. It's a pity the same cannothe said for the reserves .

How tall are they at Old Brighton?"Big" Bruce Halliday, Peter Wagner,Andrew Dick and "Maxie" Powell alltower over their opponents each week .One wishes inches were goals .

St. Kilda CBOC Juniors althoughbeaten convincingly on the scoreboardmade Monash earn every goal thehard way . It's marvellous what team-work and hard tackling will do tosome of these so-called top sides . Des-pite the good players that were notavailable a very good effort was putin by the "Sainters". With players likeChris Halpin, "Pip" Vine, Vince Laz-zaro, "Hook" Lynch and Jeff Wood-ham playing well, other members ofthe team felt obliged to play equallywell .

Tony Hunt, De La's half forwardflanker played a great game againstCaulfield Grammarians and proved aheadache all day for their backmen .Finished up with 3 goals and certainlydeserved the weekly trophy. Othersto show out were David Whitelaw andJohn Lynch .

As the boot of MHSOB's captainJohn Cooper thudded in the leatherlast week after taking a big mark, the umpire's whistle was heard as theball soared towards the big sticks .Players froze knowing the umpire wasgoing to award another kick for overthe mark . No-one even thought ofthe ball as it passed through the talltimber within reaching distance untilthe goal umpire signalled two flags .

The field umpire OK'd the goal andraced towards the centre leavingplayers with mouths gaping.

A fantastic performance by Or-mond last week to get up and winafter being down 5 goals at half-timeand looking "out" . Even the old tim-ers had to agree it was one of thebest ever seen by an Ormond side .Well done "Monds".

Three "Maccas" stood out in Ivan-hoe's valiant effort to gain the fourpoints against Collegians . CaptainBill MeWhinning turned in a classiceffort of constructive team-play. DaveMcMahon put on another display ofaerobatical marking and long kickingand John McKernan justified the tag"Space-man" with some toweringleaps for marks and hit-outs, plus twouseful goals .

Tooronga-Malvern Juniors had an-other great win, and are creepingcloser to the four each week. Threewins in a row must have Basilis pipepuffing furiously . Another win todayboys, and you will not be able to seefor the smoke. What a pity the re-serves went to sleep and stopped usfrom getting a treble .

Assumption's first half had classstamped all over it . However thesecond half was not so good. Early, with Des "Friar" Tuck. Barry Dyer,Bill Daly and Bernie "Crash" McMah-on giving tremendous drive it was allthe Blues, but the pressure applied inthe second half caught a few playersnapping. Mick Avery played anotherclever game. In the full back positionthe ever reliable Michael "Bull" Howeshowed that age has had little effecton his skills .

A word about Old Haileyburians' in-dispensable team managers . Secondsmanager Peter McDougall trains wellenough to get a game but we can'tafford to let him play as he does sucha great job . Gordon Moore does asimilarly good job for the seniors .

Congratulations go to UHS Old Boyscaptain and coach Cot Kinnear afte rleading his side to its ninth consecu-tive win . I Must also apologise fornot getting the press report in forlast week's record - Col was ou rbest player and missed out gettinghis name in the record - that willteach you for coming around Sundayafternoon and staying.

OM's Reserves convincingly wontheir game last Saturday . Pete Collinsand Pete "Smokes" Boyle dominatedthe ruck duels while Tony Ratten con-trolled the centre . Jamie Pitts adde dbite to the half-forward line and ColPyman led a tight backline. Has theclub unearthed a dynamic full-forwardin Bruce Murphy? Watch out Pete!

PowerHouse. It was his first game with theseniors this year and Russell showedthat he will be a very useful memberof the side with his good marking andaccurate hitting out in the ruck .

John Skerry of Alphington had themisfortune to stop a boot with thesoft part of his head and was takenoff to hospital to see if there was any-thing in it, so Terry . .,Bain wentstraight from the game to ask John'smother about the patient . This, for

knew about it and she became th esecond casualty in the family. Whoneeds enemies ?

Congratulations to Pat Hilbert of St .Bernard's on his marriage last Wed-,nesday, we all hope to see you backwith the team in the very near future.North Old Boys hung on desperatelyin the last quarter to fight off a de-termined bid by Old Xaverians tosnatch the four points . One of themainstays of the defence was SteveMaule who, ably assisted by BrianI2rew, repelled attack after attack.Steve started the season well but hasstill improved with every game, andall at North hope that the improve-ment never stops .

Pleasing to see MI-IS Juniors' RossWood play such a devastating game inthe centre against Old Paradians las tSaturday. Together with Nev Wei rand Pete Cameron the centreline wa sconstantly driving the ball into attack .R O. .B.-,s congratulate Paul Brook son reaching his majority, and thank"Fatty" Carr and wife for openingtheir house to us all .

Congratulations to Brunswick's go-getting president john (I'lI make aspeech) Woods . He has reatly altere dthe atmosphere around the club, helives and breathes for the red andwhite after playing a record numberof games for the club. Keep up theterrific work John .

Old Brighton's Les Walker and ClfveTaylor showed that they still havea few years left after last week' sgame against Parkside. Without thesetwo players who could we giveto? votes

Ball Briefs continuedSt . Kilda CBOC fielded possibly the

best side, individually that it has everput on the field . Twelve of the eigh-teen have had a wealth of senior ex-perience yet we played as a bunchof individuals to go under to Assump-tion. Only Donny Dwyer, Billy Ken-nedy and "Hairs" Carey (till injured)tried to instil some spirit into theside. Our reign at the top of the lad-der was shortlived .

Congratulations to Maurie Molanon attaining 50 games with St. Kev-in's Old Boys . Maurie is in his fourthyear with the club and is the teamvice captain. He has been on thecommittee for two years and causedfinancial collapse when holding theposition of treasurer. A tenacious "allor nothing" brand of player he isalways an inspiration to other playerson the field . Well done Maurie -now for 100 games .

We have a player at Fairfield whosewife is infanticipating, and the strainis beginning to show. During a brief-ing session as to action stations forwhen the blessed event starts to hap-pen, this bloke got the car and thealready packed suitcase but left hiswife behind, never mind, he'll im-prove, and then we well have more, wings than forwards . I

Footscray's Trevor Flett really play-ed well last week against Old ScotchReserves . Shifted from C.H.F. to ruckearly "energy" really fired and histeaming with "The Spook" in the ruckhelped in a great win .

A real dominating four quarters~from Brunswick centre-man Russel(Abba) Abernathy, he completely con-trolled play all day .

Old Trinity are wondering if thereis any connection between Bob Chris-tie's acquisition of a billiard table andhis ankle injury - has he sprainedon cue?

Old Brighton have more wingmenthan any other club, Harvey "H.H."_Webb, Ken "Haircut" Raff, Simon

"Curls" Young and Douglas Wood areall starring each week . This obvious-ly proves to be a problem for coachKevin Deer .

A flying start by Assumption leftSt . Kilda CBOC too big a leeway tomake up. We more than matchedthem in the last half, when a tighterdefence led by Kevin Drinan, actingcaptain and Terry Kenny, restrictedAssumption's scoring opportunities,Rovers' "Alive" Esmonde and "Tessa",well supported by improving DennisDrew were others to battle hardall day .

Congratulations to MHSOB Juniors'Daryl Brooks on his forthcoming mar-riage . His "wife" Vicki is always wel-come on Saturdays .

Good to see De La's Nev Tame downat the game last Saturday and it

i hoped he will be back in action soon .also Nev and his wife Margaret areto be congratulated on the arrival oltheir baby . "Boy of course" .

We don't regard John Williams asAlphington's best looking player bulhe is distinctive on the field for th(effectiveness of his play and previously, his attitude to opponents . The latter is changed now as he he has realised that ignorant and stupid thougithey might be, each has a bank passbook and could be a customer. Woulcthat Skinny could see a potential customer in every opponent .

G-off Freeman, Old Carey's first rover struck his best form against PoweHouse. He won 29 kicks and madihis presence felt all over the groundReg Elliott was not far behind hinwith a constructive game in the centre.

Old Haileyburians' improvemenover the past 4 weeks has largely beeidue to the smaller players who fornmosquito fleet and have become ;formidable weapon . We hope tha"Rocks", "Rick", "Pol" and Jimmy Mason can keep up the good work .

FROM HERE AND THEREDOUBLE CENTURY TO

COMMONWEALTH BANK SKIPPE RTony Borrack, Commonwealth

Bank skipper became the fourth play-er in the club's history to achieve 200senior games, when he took the fieldagainst Alphington last week . Tonyjoined the club in 1959 and after 12junior games made the senior ranksand has not looked back . Whilst re-presenting the V .A.F.A. in interstatefootball, Tony had the distinction ofhis first two kicks scoring goals. Abest and fairest winner on severaloccasions, Tony is also a hard work-ing life mmeber. His club loyalty isundoubted .

Hello Poison Pen and Bleeder -Commonwv:alth Bank suffered adouble loss last week against Alphing-ton to make our position on the lad-der very shaky. "Action" Edwardstried his hardest with 7 goals whichwas quite good when one considershe was moved from between the up-rights . We didn't play very well atall and I was bitterly disappointed.Perhaps Bleeder's weary travellerswould like a game with us - I'vealready contacted Gordon House forrecruits . Still I suppose if you makeevery mistake in the book oftenenough you'll gradually learn . Gladyou got through the Geelong barrierPoison Pen - I've had no troublegetting down there - getting away isthe problem.

GympieA big thank you from the National

Bank boys to the "National" Ladieswho are doing a great job in makingthis year a fiscal success . Plans forour end of the year ball are alreadyin hand, keep up the good work girls .

apt description for Mick who revelswhen the going gets tough and heavy .Today also is a milestone for thatgutsy little rover Graham "Dynamo"Collery who has also given every-thing for A,M .P .S . on and off the field .Tremendous efforts by both of youand club congratulations .

From Here and There '12 cIts a Red and White day today,

Bleeder mien enemy,' You will mostcertainly be bleeding tears of bloodafter this afternoon's match, I hope .With our big guns, "Howizters", BillRodda and Peter Eanses, primed tofire in the seniors, and "Tanks" MalPurcell, Ian Chanter, and Bob "Paun-chy" Winnacott poised for the blitz-kreig in the reserves, Fairfield doesnot stand a ghost of a chance eventhough form was good last week asusual . I am finding it increasinglydifficult to read and write to you thisseason as my obligations to anotherbody prevent me from being conver-sant with the present situation ofAmateur football, even though myable assistants in the Hon. Sec . Ted"Crocker" Crosling, Asst . Sec . Albert"Peter Crayfish" De Forrest, Jack `theGent" Maxwell and the unmentionableotheres endeavour to keep me postedon current affairs - illicit immoral, serious and humorously events thatseem to occur over the season . Poi-son Pen signs off .

Hi ya Gympie, I believe the "Getwith" went down against the"strength at Alphington last week .

"Steak and Kid" would have beenvery happy, no doubt, and shoutedat everyone, he might have made sureyou were supplied with plenty of theamber stuff as well, at a price that is .No. I should not be talking aboutSteak and Kid in this manner as weall know that he is such a charitableman - it begins at home - and does asplendid job each week for the Al-phington club . Would you believe heis the Alphington club? The forego-

should at least bring a bite, or bein gtreated with contempt, as it was writ-ten with "tongue in cheek" and "teethin lip." Our juniors are still to notcha win and coach Ray Senior reckonsthe match of the day will be againstNational Bank, not a strength side, when Billy "Ricky" Datson or David"Kila" Kildea may again be namedbest a field . Next week, maybe, Poi-son Pen .

100 UP TO ANZ BANKER
