July 5/74For several weeks I have been very curiousabout something, so I'm writing to you.My understanding is that both J oni Mitchelland Gordon Lightfoot are Canadian citizens, normally residing in Canada. Why is it, thenthat neither their singles ("Help Me", "Sun-down") nor their albums ("Court & Spark;',"Sundown") are given Cancon (MAPL)logos in the "Top Singles" and "Top Albums"sections of your magazine?

. , . the prophets of doom, the messengers ofmediocrity, will be overwhelmed by the new genera-tion of competent, creative, confident artisans andby all those of preceding generations who havealready demonstrated their freshness of mind, theirtalent and their capacity for inspired leadership."

I would appreciate hearing the answer tothis question, just to satisfy my curiosity.Thank you.Vincent HelwigToronto

This letter brings up an interesting pointthat should be explained to the industry. Many years ago, when RPM had the MAPLlogo designed to assist the industry, wewere not aware that the misuse of the MAPLwould lead to a great deal of trouble forRPM.

In that the CRTC regulations regardingCancon on AM radio are part of the Broad-cast Act, an infraction of the regulationscould lead to a fine of $50,000 per offenseif a radio station didn't fulfill their Canadiancontent quota. Obviously the radio stationthat might be misled by a MAPL logo thatqualified a Cancon record when the partsdenoted were not actually Canadian couldhave recourse to the record company andRPM. Record companies are very carefulto only signify Cancon when they are surethere is no error or misrepresentation.

Very recently there has been some contro-versy about the Canadian citizenship of cer-tain expatriated Canadian artists and com-posers. Some record companies have decidedto look into the documentation of evidencethat there is no misrepresentation in theseareas. RPM has taken the position that theresponsibility lies with the record companyto assert on their record labels those partsof the record that qualify as Cancon. Onlythen will we pass on the record company'sinformation in RPM in a story or on one ofour charts.

Record men we spoke to also felt that theMAPL logo on the label of a record might

effect the potential of the record. Thefeeling seemed to be that Cancon hadbecome a dirty word among programmersand a record stood a better chance if itwere judged on quality and not nationality. In the case of Lightfoot, Larry Green ofWEA Music of Canada felt that the MAPLlogo on Lightfoot product was unnecessaryin that Lightfoot's singles and LPs wereCanadian content and programmers under-stood that.A number of record men who asked fordocumented information on the citizenshipof certain artists had not received anyinformation and were aware of the reper-cussions of misrepresenting Canadiancontent. That's your answer, and it might be an indi-cation that soon the MAPL logo may beunnecessary as Cancon becomes strongerand more accepted. At one point it was feltthat a MAPL logo promoted airplay. Todaythe opposite seems to be true.

CAN BASE PROSPERSWITH LABEL WORKCan -Base Studios, Vancouver, has beenexperiencing boom business recently withboth in-house and outside label work. TerryJacks' Goldfish Records has accounted formuch of the boom with sessions by Jackshimself and Chilliwack. House producer,Mike Flicker, has kept the place hummingwith sessions for Teen Angel, Songbird andAlexis. In addition, Can -Base has beeninvolved in unspecified commercial workand a large number of demo sessions.

Former Can -Base general manager, SteveDouglas, has left the studio. Administrationis now being handled by Shelly Siegel, while Mike Flicker looks after the studio.

QUALITY PUSH ONFOLDY PRODUCTQuality's network of promotion people arelaying on a heavy nationwide campaign tobring attention to Kanata's Peter Foldy andto tie-in with his major Canadian tour withUnited Artists' Abraham's Children. Thelatter are currently showing breakout actionwith their current single, "Rockin' In TheCity" throughout the Atlantic Provinces andin some areas of Western Canada where theyhave become popular through past tours. In Toronto, the Quality crew of Joe Owensand Gary Slaight harnessed the assistanceof the Muntz Store in Scarborough's TownCentre. An autograph session was set upwhich drew a sizeable crowd, after whichFoldy visited a group of girl guides attheir display in the Centre.

Foldy's "Bondi Junction" included on hisfirst album, is still a popular item with popprogrammers. However, his most recentrelease, "When I Am So In Love", releasedseveral months ago, is now beginning topick up both pop and contemporary rockstation play.

Foldy's tour was arranged by Doug Speerof the Agency for the Creative Arts in con-junction with the Halifax -based AgencyRadius 3000. He began his tour withAbraham's Children, July 1st. with perform-ances each evening through to their capperAugust 2nd in Campbellton, New Bruns-wick.

Speer is now negotiating a Foldy tour forthe west, hopefully for the month ofSeptember.

LETTERSto the editor

BLUES FOR VILLE EMARDAT RECENT BLUES FEST.July 17/74This letter of explanation is directed to allour media friends in Toronto, who wereunable to see our group play on July 13 atthe seven o'clock show time, because of aroyal ripping we received at TWO DAYS OFBLUES FESTIVAL.One month ago, Shel Safran (one of thefestival organizers), called our Montrealoffices to see if he could book us, at a forth-coming Blues Festival (the largest of itskind according to him) in Toronto. Need-less to say it appeared to us as the ideal expo-sure we needed for entrance into the Torontomarket and so we began negotiations. Real-izing the costs of travelling with 25 persons,

Montreal's Ville Emard Blues Band, ontour for Player's Cigarettes.

we agreed to do the show for publicitypurposes. Upon completion of all the fin-ancial arrangements, they assured us that wewould be included in all their media promo-tions, radio and TV slots, etc ... In short,we were not included on any of the radio, nor were we included on any of the postersor other publicity.Three weeks before the Festival, we checked

100,000 EXPECTED ATWINNIPEG FOLK FEST.Although the promotion has been next tonil, organizers of Winnipeg's CentennialFolic Festival are confident they'll drawmore than 100,000 for the three dayevent (August 9-10-11). The Festival is free,a first for Canada and perhaps for the world.

The Festival is the brain child of MitchPodolak. The plans were initiated last yearwith Podolak being given encouragement bythe City of Winnipeg, the Province of Mani-toba and the CBC. The latter will be record-ing the full fifty-six hours of the Festivalactivity and anticipate more than eighthours of network programming.

Acts already firmed for the 'Peg Festivalinclude: John Allan Cameron, Fraser andDebolt, Rick Neufeld, David Rae, MurrayMcLauchlan, Stringband, Sylvia Tyson,Humphrey and The Dumptrucks, ShirleyEikhard, Michael Cooney, Peter Growski,Bob King, Ray Materick and many more. The music message will be traditional folk, blues, mountain music, spirituals, bluegrass, ethnic, contemporary folk, ragtime andmore. There will also be workshops tobring the many messages home.

with Jim Garrett (one of the organizers, incharge of the technical set-up), on the speci-fications of the sound system, which weheard was to be an inadequate one for us,(we take more inputs than sixteen), When hetold us their system is not yet definite, wesuggested that they could use our YAMAHASystem for free thanks to our sponsor. Theyaccepted and we were glad to do the favorin the hope that our future with these peoplecould grow. One must realize that the border of Ontario/Quebec is hard to penetrate on both sidesand that the last time a bilingual group fromQuebec ventured to Toronto, was whenCharlebois performed with the Festivalexpress. We had sincerely hoped we couldfollow suit to his success. So sincere werewe, that our organization and those of con-cert Canada's conceived and executed theentire promotion campaign in Montreal forthe Festival. In addition we handled all theticket outlets and arranged for the lightingas well. All this was done with only twothings in mind: promotion and good will.

Since we were omitted from the publicity, the only thing left was exposure which weknew we could achieve if all was to go right.

So the next thing we found out was that"goodwill" was to clash with exposure thusleaving us out of that seven o'clock engage-ment. So our entourage of twenty-fivewaited impatiently from noon until mid-night behind stage. When we finally got toplay, which turned out to be at 12:30, wehad heard that there were about 7,000persons left, half of them sleeping, theother half "stoned to the gills". The majorityof the people, according to Norm, the ferryattendant left with the ferry before shutdown time. So here we were 12:30 Saturdaynight - no press people - no 40,000people - no food or beverage left, and westarted to cook, nevertheless. We played for45 minutes and we were just starting toawake the people when the power was cutand the M.C. told the people that the showwas finished. The show might have been finished for thepeople but the aggravation was not for us.As we marched off stage we were informedthat our entire entourage had 15 minutes towipe the sweat off their faces, pack theequipment and run like "mothers" to catchthe last ferry boat to the mainland or elsewait until six in the morning. So to all our media friends I'm sorry for usblowing the engagement we had and I'msure it will never ever happen again,Chuck LufferS.G.A. Advertising makes hitsNo matter what your product or service, youwon't hit with it unless those who want orneed it are aware that it exists. I guess thatis about as simple a definition of advertisingas I can come up with.

We have talked about promotion and PR,publicity and press. Now it's time to look at

L

1. MUSIC BIZori1A stan klees

the second oldest profession in the world ...advertising.Right now I have to admit that I have avested interest in advertising with MusicAd&-Art which I own. Therefore I must believe inadvertising since the firm derives all itsrevenue one way or another from advertising.

Coming up with concepts each week forrecord companies or the allied arts of themusic industry, I find myself comparingconcepts and making judgments on ads thatsell and ads that just confuse me. I amastonished at how often ads are placed invarious music industry publications (becauseMusicAd&Art does layouts for many pub-lications) and I feel that they are rushedand put together to meet a deadline ratherthan to promote or sell a product.

Seldom does the advertiser ask, or want to sitdown and discuss the concept and the lay-out of the ad. Seldom is a program plannedthat will end up in a successful campaign to"get the record off the ground" or "givethat extra mileage".

I can understand the rush to get an ad pub-lished if a record is breaking fast, but moreoften, the client is more interested in gettingthe ad out of the road and getting on toother things ... more important. Whatcan be more important than that block ofspace that will tell the story of what, when, where and how. That space whether it belarge or small is the opportunity for therecord company to say "Look here!" andrelate to the industry that a new record iscoming, breaking, selling, being played or

might just interest a record store becausea customer asked about it yesterday.Often I look back at some -of the ads that wehave done for record companies, and someof them have been well thought throughand put together with imagination andflair. I have seen ads from top ad agenciesthat don't communicate as well as ads doneby the promo person. I would like to seemore ads that have a concept and an anglethat sells and promotes.

LEARN WHAT AN AD ISThe reason that advertising is a lost art inCanada may be because few of the peoplethat are in charge of advertising have takenthe time to learn what an ad is, what it cando, who reads it and what they shouldderive from the contents.I would like to say now, that there are somepeople with record companies that have sucha flair for advertising and promotion thatthey wouldn't have any problem getting ajob with an ad agency tomorrow.

The whole problem seems to revolve aroundthe attitude within the company. It is a syndrome of the record business to dothings at the last minute.

A WINDOW INTO ACTIVITIES

This should not He the approach to adver-tising. The content of an advertisementshould be a very creative thing that representsa window into the current activities of therecord company involved. If you aren't sure what you should have inyour ad, ask for assistance from the publica-tion. They are in the business of selling adsand will only be too glad to sit down anddiscuss the approach you might take. Thiskind of brainstorming comes up with someinteresting ads. You, the client will have thefinal say, but why not sit down with some-one and get expert advise on how your mon-ey should be spent.

TELL YOUR STORY IN AN AD

Bring everything you can lay your hands onto the meeting. Every picture and everyrelevant graphic and the product itself. Justlooking at the material might spark thatidea that will lead to an interesting concept.

TWO NEW ACTSTO SGM RECORDSStan Cayer of the Vancouver -based SGMRecords has announced the signing of twonew acts to the label. Bobby J. Bertrand,a native of Sydney, Nova Scotia, is currentlyworking on a club act with Cayer. Bertrand,a veteran of local television and Toronto'sRiverboat, plays guitar and harmonica andmerges his own compositions with materialby well established folk -pop artists. He isexpected to record his first album for SGMthis fall.

Cameron Molloy and Black Elk is a fourman group from Cranbrook, B.C., in thecountry rock idiom. The group is widelybooked and is currently winding up a tourof Port Alberni, Abbotsford, Surrey andDuncan before going on to Burns Lake,Prince Rupert and the University of BritishColumbia in Vancouver. The group isexpected to begin recording their own com-positions shortly.

Advertising makes hits ... and there aremany ways to advertise your current con-tender. I have talked in this column aboutprint advertising, but there are many otherways to advertise ... promote and pub-licize.I still think one of the best ways is to ...tell your story in an ad.

FIGURE OUT HOW AND WHY

I bought both the typewriter and the deskit is sitting on as the result of an advertise-ment. Next time you look at someone else'sad, think of how often advertising hasinfluenced you. Then figure out how andwhy. You will soon discover that it pays toadvertise.

Note: MusicAd&Art doesn't advertise inRPM anymore. We found that our adsbrought such a great response that wecouldn't service our clients in the mannerwhich they should be served. If businessever drops off, I'll start running ads again.Note: This is not an advertisement.

ROCK DREAMS(Under The Boardwalk)Illustrations by GUY PEELLAERTText by NI K COHNPAN BOOKS LIMITED$6.95This is an outstanding book from the stand-point that it involves the reader or viewer. The paintings that are reproduced are cur-rently touring Europe and soon will beexhibited in North America. The theme ofthe book is rock and the rock stars. What will involve you is the cruel, funnyor often too subtle symbolism of the painter. Many of the artists that are featured areshown in positions and settings thatattempt to reveal to the reader the characterand personality of the stars ... if not theirhabits or hangups. The book is often pornographic and may besuggestive or repulsive to anyone who maybe sensitive and has the power to analysethe sexual connotations of the artist'sconcept of the artists in each particularsetting.Well worth the money, any fan or follower

Zeppelin readies sixth albumLONDON, Eng.

The four members of Led Zeppelin are nownoses to the grindstone in the English country-side recording their eagerly -anticipated sixthalbum.

ex -Faces' member, Ronnie Lane. It is thesame studio recently utilized by the Who fortheir Quadrophenia album; and Led Zeppelinalso brought it in to record their Houses ofthe Holy fifth LP.Britain's power shortages are contributingto the hush-hush nature of the sessions -even the country's top musical export, itseems, must contend with the three-dayworking week, alternate generators and allthe paranoia that accumulates in front ofmobile studio recording machines when thepower supply is not static. As a result, visitors are being firmly discouraged byZepp's management. This sixth album has no name nor releasedate number, the group's only comment beinga cryptic "It'll come out when it's right".When you have reached the dizzying levels ofa Led Zeppelin (each of their five albums hassold in excess of not one, not two, butthree million copies around the globe), youcan afford to be choosy. There is no urgencyto keep their name before the public, and thisallows the band to be true to their music.Everything has to be meticulously rightbefore it gets group approval. To lesser acts, forced by industry pressure into spurtingout a succession of albums - far too manyof which are hastily -prepared and lack long-term substance, and are thus ultimatelydetested by their creators - Zeppelin'sposition in this regard must seem like rock'n' roll Utopia.Jimmy Page, I think, is to be wholeheartedly

applauded for continuing to uphold artisticintegrity in the recording studio; and fornot allowing the usual pressures to inflictupon his production projects. Being a per-fectionist, doubtless he has to survive manya trauma in the birth of every album -but it must be admitted that his conditionhas not been improved by an astoundingamount of previous outside mistakes, honest and otherwise, which have accom-panied the release of earlier albums.

For its part, Atlantic has long since learnedto live with the artistic demands of JimmyPage and the others (but let's face it, whena band is this big, a record company will goalong with virtually anything to keep thegroup contented). The freedoms allowed toa Led Zeppelin are virtually infinite, andagain it is to their collective credit that themembers have continued to explore newrealms rather than sitting back on theircountry estates. Once you've reached thetop, it's very easy to lose all ambition tokeep on nudging away at the confines of themusic industry. Zepp have in fact gone theother way, witnessed by their forcing theremoval of record company logos fromthe front of album jackets (a traditionalsource of dispute between artists and theirlabels) and eventually, even managing todo away with titles altogether (on theoutstanding fourth album).Nor does the band desire to see singlesreleased from their albums. They've man-aged to prevent it happening in Britain andEurope, and it's likely that their newcontract with Atlantic will curtail singlesactivity in America. They don't like whatthe singles scene represents, they don'tneed the exposure, and they openly despisethe attitudes of Top 40 -Radio One program-mers.

Zepp has just re-signed with Atlantic world-wide, and they're going to be having theirown label, on which they eventually plan torelease other artists, principally acts pro-duced by Page himself. Their first signing

SUZANNE FAIRLEY TOSTUDIO 3 PROMOTIONSuzanne Fairley has taken charge of promo-tion for Studio 3's labels, Sweetwater,Stamp and Natural Sounds. The Vancouver -based production house has experiencedseveral regional hits over the past fewmonths, most notably with Kenny Stolzand Brian Palmer.

Ralph Harding, of Studio 3, reports briskbusiness for his studios on the commercialand label fronts. Signings and new releaseswill be announced over the next few weeks.

INTERNATIONAL HONOURSFOR ECM'S COREA/CLARKEThe annual jazz poll from Britain's MelodyMaker resulted in top honours to ECM/Poly-dor artists, Chick Corea and Stanley Clarke.Corea topped the poll as No. 1 pianistwhile Clarke took the No. 1 position forbass player.

Clarke was also awarded Downbeat's Inter-national Critics Award as No. 1 electricbass player.

Polydor took on the distribution of the ECMlabel earlier this year and their nationalpress officer, Richard Glanville -Brown,reports an increase in consumer buying overthe past few months.

is expected to be Bad Company, a note-worthy group formed from the ex -membersof Free.

No-one is quite sure yet if the new Zeppelinalbum will be on their own label. Actuallythe entire album is on the most evasiveschedule - privately however, Atlanticpeople were hoping for a June or July release.By then, Houses of the Holy will be 15months old.

Houses of the Holy, of course, received a bitof a lashing from music critics - but the groupis no stranger to lack of critical acceptance.I sometimes wonder how long it will takerock critics en masse to realize that Led Zep-pelin are very serious about their music, intheir own unique manner. And that it'sextremely good music.

Last summer, Robert Plant answered theHouses' critics with a few well-chosen shotsof his own: "So there's some buggers 'asdon't like the album. Well God bless 'em, Ilike it and there's a few thousand otherbuggers like it too. I know I'm bragginglike buggery but we're playing better thanwe've ever played before."There has not been a lot of up front rapabout the new album from Zepp membersor insiders. The only comments have comefrom Jimmy Page, who said at the end ofthe last American tour: "The last album wasdifficult to get into because it was so com-plex. We used intricate rhythm patterns andhit a lot of ideas in the lyrics. The next onewill still have complex songs and it'll havean acoustic guitar piece based on a solo Iused to do with the Yardbirds during a songcalled White Summer. But most of the albumwill get back to something people thing we'vebeen drifting away from - straightforwardrock 'n' roll."

According to a management spokesman (inthis case, friend and road manager RichardCole), they have "absolutely no plans towork abroad this year." Nor are any Britishdates contemplated, although this maychange once the album is released.

The material for the sixth album was writtenbefore Christmas, some of it while on theroad in the States last year, the rest whenthe lads sat down together in November. There are no song titles yet and there isn'tlikely to be any until just before the artworkdeadline. "And that could be this year ...or next," adds Richard Cole, ominously.Zepp enthusiasts, however, will not be for-gotten. Director Joe Massot (under the band'semploy) is now supervising the editing of afilm shot during the East Coast section ofthe 1973 tour. The film (which Cole says"might" go out on general release but is"probably not for TV") will likely includesegments of Zepp's spectacularly successfulwindup concerts at Madison Square Gardenin New York (a triple -header, with morethan 60,000 tickets sold out weeks ahead)and road operations. Massot is now workingon the Stairway to Heaven section of theiract, which was a killer on the '73 tour. This summer will see the publication of aLed Zeppelin biography in paperback, whichwill surely clear up some of the media con-fusion about where this band is really at. Itshould also contribute to a wider apprecia-tion of the Zepp mystique. When you consider the position Led Zeppel-in now occupy - the most popular groupanywhere since the Beatles - very little isreally known about what they're into. But one thing is indeed obvious - JimmyPage, Robert Plant, John Bonham and JohnPaul Jones really do appreciate their privacyand their position. Who's to blame them?

What's wrong withCanadian country???? by WALT GREALIS

PART THREE

We've been asking a lot of questions andpointing up what we believe could be aprqblem with Canadian country music. ItwOuld all appear to boil down to "a lackof/promotion - by the record companiesarid the artists and groups themselves.

A big bugaboo with many record companypeople and artists is what they call "a lackof cooperation (play) from country pro-grammers", and that alone bears a littleink. The biggest cry babies are those whodo the least to promote their image. Mostof their productions are done on a shoe-string budget, leaving little for promotion. What they're looking for is a handout. Tomany, the playing of their record on theradio is all that's necessary for them tohave a hit and that's the extent oftheir promotion Country programmers, unlike their contemporary rock cousins, have been more than generous with theprogramming of Canadian country pro-duct - much of it due the CRTC contentruling. They do receive a lot of play butthey don't realize very much in the salespicture. Perhaps it's because of a lack ofproduct in the stores and then again, itcould be a question of quality. Manycountry singles are released only as avehicle to promote the group's bar cir-cuit (operators are impressed if a grouphas a record to their credit). Sound'scruel? Perhaps it's about time we facedthe facts. If you're convinced you havetalent, you should continue this belief in-

to the studios, with the final mixing, packa-ging and promotion. There are some exceptions, of course, andit's encouraging to see a little profession-alism beginning to creep into the business.

Most radio stations are open for promo-tions and programmers are constantly com-plaining about the lack of cooperationTHEY receive from country artists and re-cord companies. In many cases it's theprogrammer who has to "find" the talentfor whatever station promotion he wantsto put together.Charlie Russell, country hustler at CJCJ/Woodstock, New Brunswick, recently puttogether a promotion for the station's fif-teenth Anniversary and tied it in with thetown's Old Home Week. The Mercey Bro-thers, one of this country's most promo-tion -oriented groups, included Woodstockon their Maritime itinerary - to take advan-tage of the station promotion. Needless tosay, CJCJ leaned on the Mercey's productand, although it's a small market, good saleswere realized at the retail level. Multiplythis type of promotion by about five hun-dred times, a conservative figure, andyou're into building a national image.

CHYM-FM in Kitchener, Ontario, usedthe country theme for their silver anni-versary celebrations and, again, the MerceyBrothers were on hand along with theHummingbirds and Mike Graham a nicebreak for the artists and a strong nation-

However, they were un-usually quiet and attentive when the paceslowed and the mood became more re-flective. alistic boost for the station.

Canadian country radio stations have al-ways been looking for a means of promo-ing their image, their sound and locallyand nationally -known country names. Un-fortunately, Canada doesn't have a country"Mecca" like Nashville. Therefore, manyof their promotions are geared to take ad-vantage of the internationally famous"Music City U.S.A.".

CJ JC/Langley, B.C., boasting a decade ofcountry programming, gave away a freetrip for two to Nashville (to their "topcountry music listener"). The winner ofthe Grand Ole Opry contest was Mrs. JackWhitney of Burnaby, B.C. As it turned out,Mrs. Whitney revealed a hidden talent ofbeing able to report, in writing, her experi-ences and thoughts on her first trip to

Nashville. She was impressed with how thedesk clerk at the Albert Pick Motel fussedover her and the fact that "he was veryenthused about his town". She wroteabout her experiences down Printer's Al-ley - her meeting with Canadian RonnieProphet "He was one of the fewpeople we met who spoke English theproper way " - her visit to ErnestTubb's Record Bar and many many hap-penings that would long be rememberedby the young Burnaby housewife. What was most important, of course, washer comparing the Nashville radio soundto that of CJ JC "Nashville haslousy radio stations. It was good to hearCJ JC once again ". As for the stationitself, she wrote: "We have lived at thecoast for four years and have alwayslistened to CJ JC. We keep the radio onall night beside the bed and it used to keepme awake half the night because I wasafraid the next record would be betterthan the last and I would miss something".That's your typical Canadian country radiolistener and it reveals what the countrylistener is looking for somethinguniquely Canadian and entertaining.

But why mention the CJ JC contest? Howrelative is it to "What's Wrong With Cana-dian Country Music?" What it does pointup is that two Canadians journeyed to the

PEI "COMING HOME"WRITTEN BY COLEHarvey Cole, a resident of Benton, Washing-ton who married a Prince Edward Islandgirl, has come up with a very expensiverecording of his own song, "Prince EdwardIsland (I'm Coming Home)". The recorddoes not qualify as Canadian content how-ever it is a quality production and deservesa hearing.

The single was originally made up for Cole'swife and her parents. The latter still liveon the Island. Beth Cole thought so much ofthe ballad she mailed copies of the single toprogrammers across Canada. Several pro-grammers took the time to give the Cole'sencouragement. Patricia Bricher, musicdirector at CKOT/Tillsonburg, Ontario, referred to the single as being "a good, solidcommercial ballad with appeal to almost anyCanadian listener, not just to Islanders". J.Hugh Dunlop, manager of CKDM/Dauphin,Manitoba, wrote: "It fits beautifully intoour programming", while John Murphy, thenmusic director at CHML Hamilton, noted:"It is indeed a refreshing change to havean American record deal with a geographiclocation in Canada. The strange result isthat, here we have a song as Canadian asthere could ever be, yet one which wecan't claim Canadian content for under theterms of the Canadian Content Regulationsset down by the Canadian Radio -TelevisionCommission. The fact notwithstanding, weare playing the tune". Bruce Matheson, operations manager at CKAP/Kapuskasing,Ontario found the "production and lyricsoutstanding", along with an "excellent"rating from James T. Laing, general managerof Soo Line Broadcasting (CFSL/WeyburnCJSL/Estevan). The single is also receivingheavy play on several stations in the AtlanticProvinces including the CBC regional stationsin the Maritimes.

The PEI session was produced in Seattle atthe Kaye -Smith Studios. The vocalist, GaryKirk, and the band are locals. The recordswere manufactured by Imperial in Vancou-ver, with west coast distribution beinghandled by Emerson Sales. The Cole'sare looking for distributors for the rest ofCanada. Interested parties should directtheir enquiries to Harvey Cole, 18618 S.E.128th., Benton, Washington, 98055.

CFCO'S WAYNE STEVENS-CELEBRITY INTERVIEWSFor the past five years Wayne Stevens,CFGO/Chatham has been handling all thecelebrity interviews for the station, andthis spring has introduced a new formatcalled "My Guest In Conversation" where-by the interviews are edited into short cutswhich are run intermittently throughout thelength of his 2 to 6PM shows. Some of these interviews are done by phone, and among those who have appeared areGordon Lightfoot, Richard Carpenter, TonyBennett, Soupy Sales, and most recently,Rich Little. Stevens avoids the run-of-the-mill and goes after the more offbeat aspects of his guests. Response to thenew format has been tremendous.

CKGM PRESENTS AMOTOWN WEEKENDCKGM's Greg Stewart and Motown'snational promotion manager, Ken McFar-land, have arranged for a Motown Weekendto be presented by the giant Montrealrocker. The three days of August 9 throughthe 11th will see the programming of onehundred and twelve Motown albums andpast hits.Thirty key record stores in the Montrealarea have been dressed up with in-storedisplays, window streamers etc. for the bigweekend which will hopefully bring moreattention to current Motown releases. Topselling single and album in Montreal is thecoupling of Diana Ross and Marvin Gayeon "My Mistake".

As most radio men will tell you, the program-ming value of a record is more a factor indetermining how long a record stays on thechart than the "number" assigned it in anygiven week.The chart position of each record is based onall sorts of information, including:Distributor reports (how many recordsshipped previous week, in total);Rack jobbers;One stops;Record stores (number of sales, numberof reporting stores);

years on the air in the Maritimes, Ontario,Quebec and New York City before joiningCKEY. After a year on the air and in pro-duction work, he became program manager. His creative efforts during this time haveranged from songwriting and the productionof two all-Canadain LP's and a transcriptionmusic service, to an award -winning announce-ment he wrote and produced that was hon-oured by the Hollywood Ad Club in 1963.Kirby will start his 4 to 7PM shift on CKEYby Labour Day. The afternoon programcame open at the end of July, with the resig-nation of John Wilson, who had been withthe station since 1965.

Telephone requests;Action on other stations;Action in Trades. On the accuracy of charts, the methodologyemployed by some stations is more scientificthan others. But suggest a dose of skepticismon accuracy and validity. IMPOSSIBLE.Radio station charts are not really figuredto be accurate ... too slim is the numberof people and funds expended in the re-search of music, and too difficult is it to getinformation free of "hype"The point is, whether a record is number 17or number 13 doesn't matter much, forthe direction is set ... toward sales. Basedon our experience, however, we find oneremarkable fact: Radio men generally agreethat charts are not so much a reflection ofsales as a promotional tool for the station. In other words, few, if any, make the claimabout accuracy ... there is scant evidenceto show that charts are represented as beingaccurate. They're a promotional tool, nodoubt about it.That pretty well sums it up. The most impor-tant thing is that the record industry under-stand that, "THEY'RE A PROMOTIONALTOOL, NO DOUBT ABOUT IT."

COUNTRY continued from page 13

core of the country music sound, whereimpressed with a Canadian artist and

they preferred the sound of CJ JC towhat they heard in "Music City U.S.A.".There's a message there and it would ap-pear to be a growing trend where Cana-dians are becoming more "tuned in" withthat which is Canadian. Perhaps now isthe time to take advantage of this situa-tion. Canadian artists and record com-panies can assist country programmers inkeeping their radio stations unique andentertaining. Again, let's stress that theyshould concentrate on releasing good quali-ty records and backing their releases withstrong promotions. They should also makethemselves available to radio stations forconcerts, birthday celebrations etc. Whenwas the last time a well-known Ontariocountry artist appeared on the west coast? It's all relative and this series can be re-garded as "a lot about nothing", but atleast we're writing about the Canadiancountry music scene. The showcasing is upto you.Hopefully this year's BIG COUNTRY (tobe held in November) will see the beginningof a professional approach to the countryrecording scene.

Some of you are talking about a CanadianCountry Organization. Keep talking

you could develop a rapport with eachother that would be uniquely Canadian

and not at the expense of the successfulCountry Music Association.

Next week: The ego problems of artists.
