Offshore Wind Industry, last 20y + next 4y
Global Offshore Wind Industry in an important (or critical?) phaseGlobal Offshore Wind Industry in an important (or critical?) phase
1991 – 2011 3,8 GW grid connected-Mainly Denmark and UK-Mainly nearshore, shallow water, 2-3 MW turbines
2012 – 2015 roughly 12 GW in serious development/order- 15 times more than before- thereof:
1/3 in UK and 1/3 in Germany(Final Investment decision in Germany 7 billion €)1/3 in other European countriesand2/3 with financing1/3 so far without financing
Offshore? What kind of offshore?
1. Near to shore, < 20 km, mainly 5 - 15 km from the nearest harbour
2. Shallow water, < 20 m, mainly 5 - 15 m water depth
3. Mainly onshore turbines used with 2 - 3 MW
4. Strong wind regimes

Offshore IOffshore I
1. Far from shore, more than 20 km, up to 150 km from the nearest harbour
2. Deep water, up to 60 m water depth
3. Real offshore turbines needed

(Wind) Data Offshore
-Do we have enough wind data offshore?
-Do we understand the offshore wind farm models? Wakes?
-Do we have enough data about the offshore soil?
For the first time in the world a fully pre-
assembled wind turbine installed offshore
- Total lift of 655 tonnes

Improved frame design resulted in faster and more solid pre-piling operation
 Piling started 1 May 2010
Final piles completed on 14 July 2010
 Average time 2.5 days/location

New O&M Concepts: Three self-operating Elements
Jack-up Crane Vessel:
 For up to 90 people
 Three-shift model
Crane is designed to lift weights up to 500 tons
Platform Supply Vessel:
For staff transports, supply of the crew, delivery of spares and tools (60 people / 300 tons cargo)
Active motion compensating gangway for transfers up to 2.50 m waves
Workboat:
For minor repairs, inspections or preparatory work
Start of operation: 2014

= Service and maintenance of up to 240 turbines / year
= Service and maintenance of up to 240 turbines / year
100 % reliability for all components
- Main components of course
- But also the small parts, causing offshore high O & M costs
- Big difference to the Onshore Wind Industry
Grid Connection and Storage of Energy
● Talisman Energy & SSE
- 2x 5M
- Installed 2006 & 2007
● Water depth: 45 m
● Distance to shore: 25 km

Offshore Revolution: New wind farm design
Based on Onshore Wind each wind turbine is a full power station on it´s own
vs.
An Offshore Wind power station with “stupid” wind turbines
