    development.

  • Fuelling oil and gas growth

In line with Malaysias aspira-tions to emerge as the regional oil and gas hub by 2017, OGA 2015 will serve as a crucial meeting place for exhibitors, trade visitors and delegates to converge, discuss and deliberate on the industrys challenges and opportunities.

The OGA series has proven to be a valuable platform for us to showcase our latest technologies, products and services in line with our constant efforts to offer the best solutions and most innovative technologies to meet the worlds energy challenges, says Syed Feizal Syed Mohammad, Technips senior vice-president for Malaysia and Brunei.

As the Asian regions number one oil and gas event, OGA 2015 is set to attract various prominent local and international brands in the fields of oil, gas and petrochem-ical engineering.

As a leading regional player in the oil and gas industry, UMW Oil & Gas aims to add robustness to upstream activities of the oil and gas industry, mainly through drill-ing and oilfield services.

We offer top-notch drilling capabilities and state-of-the-art threading, inspection and repair services to support the petroleum and petrochemicals industry, says Rohaizad Darus, president of UMW Oil & Gas Corporation Berhad, which is headquartered in Kuala Lumpur.

Since its inception, the OGA series has highlighted Malaysias strategic advantages as an oil and gas hub.

OGA 2013 boasted a record-breaking attendance of 29,770 (including trade visitors and exhib-itors) and provided various oppor-tunities for collaboration between government entities and private companies, both local and foreign.

OGA 2015 is set to be another record-breaking event. One of the special features of this years show is the 5th Annual HSE Excellence Forum in Oil, Gas & Petrochemicals organised by Fleming Gulf Conferences, which will be held alongside OGA 2015.

We also look forward to hosting 16 dedicated international pavil-ions as part of the exhibition, showcasing their respective tech-nologies and services, says Tan Sri Asmat Kamaludin, chairman of Malaysian Exhibition Services Sdn Bhd (MES), the organiser of the

THE 15th Asian Oil, Gas & Petrochemical Engineering Exhibition (OGA 2015) aims to tack-le ongoing challenges and emerg-ing opportunities in the Asian oil and gas industry.

In the past decade, Malaysias oil, gas and energy (OGE) industry has been contributing about one-fifth of the national gross domestic product. As part of the Economic Transformation Programme (ETP) that will propel Malaysia forward into a truly developed nation, the OGE sector is targeting 5% annual growth until 2020.

The 12 Entry Point Projects (EPPs) and two business opportuni-ty thrusts identified in the ETP are projected to deliver RM131.4bil in gross national income and create an additional 52,300 jobs in the OGE sectors.

Faced with maturing oil fields, declining domestic production and a finite fuel source in the face of accelerated economic growth, the main challenge for energy suppli-ers is not just the availability of alternative energy supply but also the commercial potential of these resources.

OGA 2015, which will be held from June 2 to 4 at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre, will see some 23,000 visitors arriving on Malaysian shores throughout the duration of this event.

About 2,000 companies from more than 50 countries in the oil and gas sector are expected to gather under one roof to showcase their products and services.

OGA 2015 is certainly timely given the various challenges plagu-ing the global oil and gas industry, particularly in terms of sustainabil-ity, says Datuk Ramli Md Nor, group executive chairman of the Olio Group, a provider of marine and oilfield services, well services, process packages, mechanical and electrical solutions, and water sys-tems.

A crucial part of developing the local OGE sector rests in forming strategic partnerships and joint ventures between local and foreign governments, government entities and organisations.

OGA provides a platform for local players to not only enhance their capabilities but also launch onto the global stage. At the same time, foreign companies are able to tap into the local strengths and expertise.

OGA 2015 event.OGA 2015 will be officiated by

Petronas chairman Tan Sri Mohd Sidek Hassan.

    Endorsed by Matrade and sup-

ported by the British Malaysian Chamber of Commerce, MyCEB, Sirim and MOGSC, OGA 2015 will undoubtedly unearth many new developments and produce more

positive outcomes for the oil and gas industry in the region.

  • ENDRESS+HAUSER will be one of the exhibitors at Oil & Gas Asia 2015 and will unveil a new product the SpectarSensor gas analysers used for critical process control.

SpectraSensors gas analysers are exceptionally reliable for measuring trace gas components using tunable diode laser (TDL) technology.

SpectraSensors TDL analysers are proven solutions for this challenging application.

Their non-contact sensor is impervious to damage by contaminants.

The use of TDL technology prevents measurement interferences from other infrared-absorbing compounds.

Being laser-based means there are no wet-up or dry-down delays, resulting in fast updates even when the concentration changes dramatically during the regeneration of the catalyst.

Another product to be highlighted at the exhibition will be the overfill prevention system, which detects, indicates and prevents hazardous overflow levels in a storage tank.

It complies with the standards API 2350 (standard description of the minimum requirements required to comply with modern best practices to prevent tank overfills) and IEC 61511 (a technical standard that uses instrumentation to determine the expected practices in system engineering that ensure the safety of an industrial process).

  • PETROLEUM engineering is an engineering specialism that mainly deals with the extraction of oil and gas from the earth as well as fuel processing methods and environmental and safety issues.

It serves as a backbone to the rapidly growing oil and gas industry. Being such an all-encompassing field, it is safe to say that job opportunities in this field are abundant. In fact, the US Department of Labor predicts that the employment of petroleum engineers is expected to rise by 17% in the coming years.

With Malaysia moving towards becoming the number one hub for oil field services, there would, no doubt, be an increase in demand for petroleum engineering graduates.

Consequently, this will prove to be a lucrative field with attractive career prospects, which include opportunities in oil and gas exploration, fabrication of oil and gas structures, ship building and offshore support.

Furthermore, prominent job portal JobStreet.com reports that engineers in the oil and gas industry are among the top 10 highest salary earners in Malaysia.

In pursuing a career in this field, it is important for you to first obtain a strong base. At Heriot-Watt University Malaysia, students are provided with a pathway to kick-start a bright future.

Education pathwayThis pathway starts with the

universitys Foundation in Science programme, where students are equipped with the basics in engineering as well as other skills that the university believes will help them transition into their undergraduate studies.

After completing this year-long programme, students will then progress into the universitys three-year BEng (Hons) Petroleum Engineering programme, with the option at the second year to transfer to the MEng Petroleum Engineering pathway and acquire the award after completing their studies in an additional two years.

The programme incorporates a range of engineering-relevant subjects, ensuring that the students receive a wholesome education and are well informed about the oil and gas industry as a whole.

As is Heriot-Watt University Malaysias common practice, the university partners with industry professionals in developing and accrediting the programme content. Doing so guarantees that the syllabus and teaching materials used are relevant to the industrys requirements.

Heriot-Watt University Malaysia also employs a mixed mode of teaching and assessments, which includes projects, assignments, mentor sessions, workshops and laboratory activities.

This mixed method allows students to apply their skills to real, practical engineering scenarios while deepening their understanding of petroleum engineering principles. Graduates subsequently have exciting career prospects with a number of major energy providers or smaller specialist companies.

    Prestigious legacyFounded in 1821, Heriot-Watt

University is a leading British institution for applied research and is recognised internationally as a centre for high calibre activity in science, technology and business.

This legacy of excellence has earned the university the 52nd spot in the world, seventh in the UK and first in Scotland according to the Times Higher Education 100 under 50 universities 2014, as well as 22nd place in the world based on the international outlook indicator from the Times Higher Education World University

Rankings. In addition, several of Heriot-

Watts courses have been singled out for their excellence. For instance, The Times Good University Guide 2015 ranked the university in the top 10 in the UK for chemical engineering, general engineering and food science, among others.

Heriot-Watts multiple campuses in the UK, Dubai and Malaysia present students with campus transfer opportunities during the course of their undergraduate

studies, reflecting the universitys commitment in sharing knowledge across the globe while providing both students and researchers opportunities to grow their international network.

Employees of Steel Hawk Engineering Sdn Bhd is a service provider to the oil and gas industry that offers integrated design and engineering consultancy services.

Sharman K. Michael, executive director-cum-chief technical officer of Steel Hawk Engineering Sdn Bhd.

product in our product list. Our process control skids are built in our facilities.

All skids undergo factory accept-ance tests tested in our shop before shipment. This eliminates start-up problems in the field and gets you on line faster. We work with you to obtain any certifications necessary before shipment.

Moving on to downstream, you have also made progress with your price agreement contracts for pump condition-based moni-toring that has recently been secured by your company. What has been the key to success in this project?

The key to success was finding sufficient resources to provide us with options for the best develop-ment concept to maximise the pro-ject value and create added value to our end-user.

We have invested in the latest high-end monitoring, vibration analysers and alignment equip-ment for this contract price agree-ment with Petronas Dagangan Berhad.

This is a 2+2 years price agree-ment contract that requires us to ensure that all pumps within the custody of Petronas Dagangan Berhad in 30 terminals throughout Malaysia are healthy and continu-ous monitoring is kept up with pro-visions of zero downtime.

Many in the industry are predict-ing a lot of mergers and acquisi-tions this year with the oil price being so low. Will SHESB be involved in any of these? Are companies or assets better target at these prices?

Many companies are struggling in the current oil price environ-ment as it is difficult to access fresh capital be it debt or equity.

We are looking more into merg-ers with bigger and listed organisa-tions rather than acquisitions by ourselves.

We are fortunate to have a diver-sified business model an are rela-tively well positioned. I think assets and companies can both be attrac-tive, so what matters is how much value can be created from each opportunity.

We are very selective as any-thing we bring into the portfolio has to rank in the top quartile against the opportunities currently in our portfolio.

For example, we are creating awareness within the upstream industry for a more economical solution of chemical injection skids where it is solar driven.

Our first solar-driven chemical injection skid has been installed and commissioned on Samarang a riser platform.

It is fully owned and operated by Petronas Carigali Sabah Operations.

Does SHESB have a corporate social responsibility (CSR) pro-gramme?

CSR is parallel with our princi-ples of conducting business with transparency and responsibility as well as adhering to the key practic-es of good corporate governance.

Endless Knowledge with Continuous Education is our CSR policy where, as a socially respon-sible corporate citizen and in sup-port of the governments aspira-tions, we are committed to pro-grammes that will ultimately con-tribute towards the nations social and economic development. Steel Hawk seeks to bring value to the community and nation at large by enhancing education, particularly for underprivileged children.

What advice would you give to young engineers in Malaysia looking to become entrepreneurs such as yourself?

Your key asset will be your employees, so always ensure that their welfare is taken care of.

If you have 30 employees and you take into account that each employee has one spouse and an average of three children, you are actually responsible for approxi-mately 150 peoples rice bowls.

With 150 individuals dependent on your organisation, constant expansion, continuous product enhancement and inventions, and meeting industry demands come second to none.

n For more information, visit www.steelhawk.com.my

our downstream activities was essential to our growth strategy. By last year, our downstream activity represented 15% of our business, consisting of operations, repair and maintenance jobs.

We are expecting to further bal-ance our downstream activities in relation to our upstream activities.

What is your current interna-tionalisation strategy?

Currently our business compris-es 0% international projects and 100% domestic projects. However, in the next two years the ratio will become one to nine and, within five years, the split will likely be 30% international contracts and 70% domestic contracts.

Why is Steel Hawk so focused on upstream skid packages?

Steel Hawk offers customised integrated process skid fabrication with options of mechanical and/or electrical skid-mounted process systems that are pre-wired and mounted on a common base to meet specific design and process requirements.

Our first large contract came from Petronas Carigali Sarawak Operations for chemical injection skids. That was a breakthrough and created a big job opportunity within our organisation.

Since then, upstream skid pack-ages have been our most important

STEEL Hawk Engineering Sdn Bhd (SHESB), a service provider to the oil and gas industry, is set to become one of the market leaders in providing innovative solutions and new technology to the indus-try in Malaysia.

The Malaysian-owned company with Bumiputera status is a regis-tered vendor with Petronas for several of its standardised work and services categories.

We speak to Sharman K. Michael, executive director-cum-chief technical officer of SHESB, about the companys products, ser-vices, policies and his outlook on the latest oil and gas industry trends.

What is the purview of Steel Hawk Engineering Sdn Bhd (SHESB)?

and utility skid packages, including sump and drain skids.l Instrumentation products and

process control systems.l Carbon dioxide vent and flare

snuffing as well as nitrogen purg-ing packages.l Pressure safety valves, rupture

discs and devices.l Rotating equipment condition-

    based monitoring.

What are the policies imple-mented by your management to ensure good governance?

Out of the many policies imple-mented for our employees, the two most strictly enforced ones are the health, safety and environment (HSE) policy and anti-corruption policy.

We have an in-house HSE com-mittee of which I am the chairman. We conduct quarterly meetings to ensure HSE policies evolve accord-ing to industry standards and Petronas requirements. Our HSE policies are in line with the zero tolerance (ZeTo) rules outlined by Petronas.

On April 5 last year, our corpo-rate management implemented the anti-corruption policy, which dic-tates that Steel Hawk employees and representatives are forbidden to offer anything money, gifts or services to gain an advantage in business dealings.

They are also barred from abus-ing a position of trust to gain undue advantage. The policy defines the companys commit-ment to integrity and the responsi-bilities of its employees.

What are the organisations achievements in recent years in

line with the government poli-cies and Petronas policies?

We have successfully increased Bumiputera sub-vendors and sup-pliers from seven in 2012 to 35 last year for all our projects. Furthermore, we managed to increase Bumiputera Petronas-licensed sub-vendors from two in 2012 to 32 last year.

This contributes to an increased local content from 55% in 2012 to 80% last year for all our projects.

With constant assistance and technology transfers from the United States, the Netherlands, Australia, India and Italy, Steel Hawk is fulfilling its aspiration of creating solutions for the oil and gas industry locally.

What is your opinion about Steel Hawks current business moment?

We are experiencing an exciting moment as we have successfully implemented management and performance improvements that are focused on labour safety, pro-ductivity and business portfolio.

Our goal is to constantly improve our products and presence so that Steel Hawk remains our clients best solution. We stay true to our corporate motto We Engineer Engineering, which keeps us on the go.

Tell us about your strengths and what opportunities you are pursuing.

Chemical injection skids and pro-cess utility skids such as sump and drain skids constitute our main strength. Eighty percent of our activities relate to supporting and enhancing upstream production facilities.

In 2013, the upstream sector rep-resented 95% of our activities, while our downstream activities were only responsible for 5% of our overall business activities.

Our involvement in the down-stream sector was characterised by our services in refining and petro-chemicals, which constituted main-ly the trading and supplying of var-ious multiple process gauges and process instruments.

    We recognised that developing

  • Technology meets demandSOLUTIONS to increase oil and gas production are met by eProcess Technologies, which enables its cli-ents to take on additional or shut-in productions and enhance exist-ing productions by increasing well rates and reducing process downtime.

The companys solutions increase the life of operating assets by reducing the wear and tear on processing equipment, including vessels, pipework, valves and instrumentation.

Its technology is found in every part of the production process, including topsides upstream (in accordance with American Petroleum Institute or API stand-ards) or downstream (in accord-ance with The American Society of Mechanical Engineers or ASME standards) of the choke subsea and downhole.

eProcess designs, engineers and manufactures standard and/or fit-for-purpose technology solutions for all production streams.

    eProcess products include:l Wellhead desander

This is a cyclone-based process system that provides the most effi-cient solution for the separation and removal of solids from mul-tiphase fluids. eProcess wellhead desander cyclones are pressure-drop dependent, where multiphase fluids are directed into the cyclone, causing the fluids and particles to spin under a centrifugal force.

These strong forces cause the solids and fluids to separate. Gas, in particular, disengages and sepa-rates quickly. The heavier solids

is a cyclonic solids jetting technolo-gy designed for the fluidisation, removal and transport of solids that have settled into a variety of production vessels and tanks.

It does not include moving parts and uses motive liquids to fluidise solids in a controlled manner with-in a defined region of the vessel. An eJECT manifold can be designed to cover all or part of a vessel.

    l Desanding hydrocycloneA desander hydrocyclone-based

    process system provides the most

efficient solution in water pro-duced for separation of solids, cleaning, storage and transporta-tion. eProcess desander hydrocy-clones are pressure-drop depend-ent, just like the wellhead desand-ers. The hydrocyclones have no moving parts.

Solids are typically collected in dedicated secondary accumulator vessels.

For high-operating pressures, these are typically closed systems used to prevent high quantities of gas flashed during the purge cycle.

l Produced water treatment. The eProcess deoiler hydrocy-

clone-based system provides an efficient, compact and durable pro-duced water treatment system.

The deoiler hydrocyclones are pressure-drop dependent. By accu-rately controlling the pressures across the hydrocyclone, the water phase is sent in one direction to the underflow and the oil phase is sent in the opposite direction to the overflow. The process is a simple and effective separator with a two- to three-second retention time and no moving parts.

eProcess offers the worlds lead-ing portfolio of technologies for sol-ids separation, collection, cleaning, dewatering and transport designed for the demanding environment of the oil and gas industry.

Since its inception in Malaysia in 2010, eProcess has delivered more than 60 packages to major interna-tional oil companies, national oil companies and service companies in Asia, the Middle East, West Africa and Europe. It continues to expand its footprint locally as it believes Malaysia is a technically competent and cost-effective engi-neering and manufacturing hub in this region of the world.

are forced outward toward the cyclone wall and the lighter fluids and gas phase migrate in the oppo-site direction toward a centre core.

Solids spiral down the cyclone to the underflow outlet, while the remaining fluids are forced in the opposite direction to the overflow.

The process is a simple and effective separator, with a two- to three-second residence time and no moving parts.

  • IN tandem with the growth of the oil and gas industry, Sirim has expanded to include services relat-ed to the industry and has been steadily building a reputation with-in the sector.

According to Dr Wan Abdul Rahman Jauhari Wan Harun, sen-ior director of Sirims plant and machinery flagship, Sirim offers a wide range of services relevant to the oil and gas industry, including conceptual design, machining, test-ing and calibration, quality sys-tems, failure analysis and training in welding.

This, coupled with our role as a standards organisation, has made Sirim a primary choice for oil and gas companies to work with. Our involvement in the development of parts and components for the oil and gas sector employs our current expertise in modelling, engineering analysis, digitising, prototyping and small lot production through machining and foundry works to develop parts and components that would otherwise have to be imported.

We have also ventured into research and development as well as new product development for the replacement or enhancement of parts and components for upstream and downstream activi-ties, he says.

As most existing parts and com-ponents suppliers are established foreign names, Sirims present focus includes enhancing its engi-neering capabilities and collaborat-ing with local vendors in particular to pursue new innovations and

    Innovative, quality design

help boost their profile in the pro-cess.

This is an area that typically requires huge monetary invest-ment, something that small and medium enterprises might not be able to do and many large companies may choose to avoid, preferring to use sub-con-tractors instead.

This is where Sirim plays an important role by providing the stepping stones that will help move the countrys oil and gas industry forward.

We are looking to work with vendors, especially small and medium enterprises, in localising the manufacture of parts and com-ponents such as piping valves from design and development to

testing, says Dr Wan Abdul Rahman.

Sirim proved its capabilities among industry players when it was approached by a vendor of Petronas to develop Y-Tee joints for the piping system of gas refineries in Bintulu, Sarawak. Sirim, togeth-er with the vendor, designed and manufactured the joints using a foundry process, successfully pro-ducing a prototype that met the necessary requirements.

Petronas took notice of the ven-dors success in this project and is now collaborating with the vendor to identify other potential areas of parts and components localisation.

In that respect, Sirim does not view itself as an industry competi-tor per se but a body that comple-

ments the innovative endeavours of vendors.

As our core business in technol-ogy encompasses research and development, consultation as well as technology development and transfer, we have the necessary facilities and capabilities to work together with vendors to improve their current products or develop new products, says Dr Wan Abdul Rahman.

We will continue collaborating with local players to work on parts and components for local and

    international markets.In addition, the upcoming

Refinery and Petrochemicals Integrated Development (Rapid) in Johor will spur the expansion of Sirims capabilities in participating in and offering expertise to the project.

The oil and gas industry holds a lot of potential. Malaysia already recognises Sirim as a premier name in upholding quality. It is now time for us to expand and go beyond what we have achieved, says Dr Wan Abdul Rahman.

Design engineering opens doors to new advances. In a technology-centric indus-try such as oil and gas, it is an integral pillar in propelling the industry forward.

With the expansion of the countrys oil and gas industry, there will be greater demand for a competent workforce.
