WHAT THEY’VE SAID

The United Nations has long recognised that the imagination, ideals and energies of young men and women are vital for the continuing development of the societies in which they live. AIESEC has contributed

to this development by serving as an agent of positive change through

education and cultural exchange to develop a broader understanding of

cultural, socioeconomic and business management issues.

Kofi Annan Secretary General, United Nations (1997-2006)

Partnership Proposal for Faculty of Education AIESEC is an international youth-driven organisation promoting global leadership; in Australia we are active on most major Australian Universities. AIESEC is also youth advisory body to the United Nations and the European Union. The values and goals of the Faculty of Education are similar to those of AIESEC and are based on a solid foundation of education and opportunity. These are values the founders of AIESEC carried, and are instilled in how we exist. As the world’s largest youth-run organisation, AIESEC can bring value through our networks and our 60 years of leadership development. Key to what we can offer is the cultural diversity and international experiences we integrate into our 100,000 members across the globe. This proposal outlines such a partnership, the benefits and how it may be implemented.

ABOUT AIESEC 7 exchange students in Stockholm, Sweden created AIESEC post World War II in 1948.

“To expand the understanding of a nation by expanding the understanding of the individuals, changing the world one person at a time.” AIESEC is the global youth network impacting the world through leadership development experiences, and today we are the world’s largest youth-run organisation. We offer students and recent graduates a chance to facilitate and undertake professional internships and volunteer programs, providing them with a global perspective, and a chance to apply skills learnt in a practical environment. We also offer students the opportunity to be global citizens, change the world and gain the experiences and skills that matter today, by running the organisation.

OUR CORE VALUES Living Diversity: Seeking to learn from the different ways of life and opinions represented in our multicultural environment. Activating Leadership: Lead by example and inspire leadership through our activities. We take full responsibility for developing the youth leadership potential of our members. Enjoying Participation: Creating a dynamic environment through active and enthusiastic participation of individuals. Demonstrating Integrity: Consistency and transparency in our decisions and actions. Striving for Excellence: We aim to deliver the highest quality performance in everything we do, through creativity and innovation. AIESEC has been providing students and recent graduates of UWA, a platform for practical learning, skill development and international opportunities for nearly 25 years. In 2012 through promotion and faculty support, we were able to recruit 45 members who are part of AIESEC’s life-learning cycle. This excludes the 37 UWA students we sent on international experiences to countries such as Vietnam, Malaysia, Czech Republic, Philippines, Poland and Mainland of China. AIESEC UWA also welcomed five international interns from Canada and Argentina to Australia, who completed their internships in both local firms and on campus.

In 2013 we have placed a greater focus on our University Relations. We have strengthened our relationship with the Business School at UWA and are looking to forge new relationships with other faculties on campus. We have also placed a greater focus on other clubs and societies on campus and currently have a strong relationship with the student guild.

This year we have welcomed 3 new interns from Canada and Tunisia who are working in both local firms and on campus. We also recruited 50 UWA students as members of our committee and have so far sent 8 students on international experiences across the world.

Our overall aim as a university-based organization is to provide a benefit to the students of UWA through the different opportunities, which we have to offer.

MISSION “AIESEC University of Western Australia is seeking to establish a partnership with the (Faculty of Education) to provide more opportunities for (Education) students to participate in the AIESEC (Go Teach) program.” WHAT IS GO TEACH? Go Teach involves a professional working experience abroad in the field of language education. AIESEC partners with different institutions, providing placements for students or graduates to travel abroad and teach languages. It involves working for schools or language institutions to teach English to youth and adults, giving you the opportunity to develop professional working skills in a foreign cultural environment. Go Teach does not require students and graduates to have an education background in order to participate; it is open to students and graduates from all disciplines. The internship is an opportunities for participants to develop professional skills, and the hard and soft skills gained in being an effective educator, which are highly regarded is almost all industries.

BENEFITS The future of Australia will depend on our next generation of educators, in schools and in the workplace. In AIESEC, we want to make sure these people have the right experiences, not just in the educational field, but culturally and globally. So that Australia’s youth are even better prepared for the future.

• Exchange Participants (EP) are offered a chance to apply their learning’s in a foreign environment to drive social impact in the community

THE DIFFERENCE “Many of AIESEC’s projects abroad tackle specific social issues in the community, AIESEC’s acknowledge the impact our Exchange Participant (EP) are having globally on the communities they interact, however, AIESEC is not a Volunteer Tourism organization. We aim to drive the strongest impact not on the community projects or programs, but rather the EP that we send on abroad. We are a leadership development organization, we focus on using exchange as a means to develop youth and instill a sense of global citizenship into them.” HOW WE DO IT Applicants are screened and assessed to ensure that they are the right fit:

• Motivations and reasons for exchange • Relevant skill sets and adaptability • Sound understanding of cultural

exchange • Alignment with AIESEC values • Understanding the relevance of

exchange and leadership

Country Partnerships Country partnerships within the AIESEC network, helps AIESEC Australia monitor the quality of the internships and programs, at the same time acts as an accountability measure on the hosting entity. Reintegration Post-exchange seminar to re-engage EP with AIESEC. The space focuses on consolidating the importance of youth leadership and how AIESEC exchange can help achieve that. It also provides a place for EP to network with other EP and act as a discussion forum.
