PRINCIPAL’S REPORT Mrs K Campbell

Welcome back to another school year, we are looking forward to the successful learning year ahead. Many of our families would have just celebrated the Chinese New Year. Kung hei fat choi!

I hope everyone had an enjoyable and relaxing holiday. It really is wonderful to have the children back at school and to see so many familiar faces. I would particularly like to welcome all our new students and their families to Old Guildford. We have an exciting and busy year ahead of us.

Classes have been formed and the children settled and working well. We welcome quite a number of new staff to our school. Mr Quan has been successful in gaining a permanent appointment at OGPS and will be teaching a Year 2 class this year. M/s Bates has also been successful in gaining a permanent position with us and will be teaching a 5/6 class. Also joining our staff are M/s Safrglani who is teaching a kindergarten class, M/s Tea teaching Year 2 and M/s Thielemans and M/s Ahmed both providing literacy support for students. We also welcome back M/s Feggaris from maternity leave.

We had expected to form an additional class this year but further enrolments meant that we formed two extra classes. We now have 16 lovely classes.

Our thanks to those parents who were able to attend a parent/teacher interview this week. It was a wonderful opportunity to meet class teachers and discuss your child’s needs.

School Uniforms

It is wonderful to see all of our students looking so smart in full school uniform. The children are also asked to wear black shoes with white socks. As mentioned last year canvas slip-on shoes are not acceptable as they do not meet the safety standards for children in NSW schools. School shirts, hats and jackets are available from our uniform shop between 8.30am – 3.00pm every Tuesday.

School Contributions

Many thanks to those families who have paid the voluntary school contribution for 2015. This year’s contributions will be used to help extend air conditioning throughout the school. Your assistance is much appreciated and will help us achieve our goal to air condition all learning spaces.

VOLUNTARY FEES: One child is $20.00

Two or more children are $30.00

Kindergarten, Year 1 and Year 2 have begun a literacy program called the “Daily

5”. Children have been working at the different aspects of the daily five; including “Read to Self”, “Work on Writing” and “Read to Someone”. Each class has been involved in practice to build reading stamina up to 20 minutes. Here are some

pictures of us working hard on Daily 5 activities.

“I love read to self” Safa 1R “I like read to self the best” Maysam 1R

“I like read to someone because someone reads to me and I can read to someone” Vishek 1R

“I like read to self because I like to stretch tricky words by myself” Hassan 1R

“I like read to someone because I like reading to other people” Hameeda 1R

Zone Swimming Carnival 2015

The Lansdowne Zone Swimming Carnival was held at Fairfield Leisure Centre on Tuesday 3rd March 2015.

Eight students from Old Guildford Public School competed in Freestyle, Breaststroke, Backstroke and Butterfly events.

The following students participated well and made the Freestyle Finals. They are as follows: Serene Hamad and Layla Buititana in the 9yr Girls, Leila Safrglani in the 10 yr Girls, Mariam Buititana in the 11yr Girls and Ruby- Robbie Roberts in the 12yr Girls.

Layla Buititana finished second in the 9yr Girls Final. There were no Finals held for the other strokes, as times were taken in the heats.

Old Guildford students were well behaved and competed well against schools with higher enrolments.

Old Guildford would like to thank Mrs Ali for transporting some of our students and for officiating, as a Time-keeper in very trying weather conditions. Her efforts are much appreciated.

Thanks.

Year Book for 2014

Additional copies of the 2014 Year Book were ordered late last year. We have a limited number left, these are available for purchase from the office for $12.00. This is an amazing record of school events and class activities throughout the year. The Year Book is a wonderful memento of an exciting and eventful year in a child’s primary education. Available for purchase at the office only until these last copies are sold.

Hi! My name is Haidar Ali and I am one of our school captains. My favourite subjects are maths and PE. My hobbies are playing soccer, watching movies and spending time with my wonderful family. At school I’m involved in debating, SRC and I’m in the senior boys’ soccer team. I love this school so much, I wish it went right up to uni and TAFE!

Meet our

School Captains

Hi! My name is Ruby Robbie Roberts. This year I am one of our school captains. I am a part of SEMP, drum group and the Student Representative Council. I enjoy my after school time with swimming, karate and other sports. This is my eighth and last year at Old Guildford and I’m looking forward to going to high school next year.

Hi! My name is Abbir Malas and this year I am a school prefect. I have five sisters and one brother and I love going to the beach on weekends. I am in the school soccer team. My hobby is soccer and I play it every day. When I come home from school I eat, do my homework and then play soccer—either outside, or inside when I play FIFA 15 on the playstation.

Hi! My name is Samuel Taulaga. I am an OGPS school prefect and I am only eleven years old. It was hard to become a prefect but I will try my best to follow the family way, like my brother and sister before me. I love science, maths and sport. I play soccer for the school and on weekends I play football, so I can be fit for anything that comes my way.

Hi! My name is Daoud Ali and I am a prefect at Old Guildford Public School. Some of my favourite subjects at school are maths, reading and science. In all my eight years at OGPS I have been involved in lots of school activities, such as dance group, SRC, choir, debating, SEMP and PSSA sport. But being elected a school prefect is the best of all!

Hi there! My name is Fowzia Dib and I am a prefect at OGPS. I have three sisters. On the weekend I like to go to my Grandma’s house and have a family barbecue. In my spare time I like to watch TV and play on my computer. All my life I’ve wanted to be a prefect and now my dream has come true. I love playing soccer and my favourite colours are purple and blue.

What do the Butterflies do at preschool? The children, staff and families are settling into the routines of preschool and getting to know one another. The preschool children engage in both indoor and outdoor play experiences each day as well as language and literacy sessions. Through play the children develop important skills such as problem solving, fine motor, language, imagination and social skills, as well as early literacy and numeracy skills. Play benefits every aspect of a child’s development, as well as being lots of fun! These are some photos of our play and learning experiences from the first few weeks.

Please come and talk to us if you have any questions or concerns about your child.

It’s great to see the children settling into the preschool environment and routines. All of the children are getting to know each other and many children are already beginning to develop close friendships. The children have been learning how to initiate and maintain appropriate play and conversation with their peers and teachers. They are also learning to share, take turns and respect their own property and that of others.

Clean Up Australia Day at OGPS!

Students at OGPS participated in the annual School Clean Up program. All the classes were allocated an area at school to clean. Many enthusiastic students remembered to bring in their

old tee shirts and gloves for cleaning. It was so good to see all students getting involved in cleaning our school. This year we combined cleaning and gardening around the school.

Kindergarten is off to a great start at OGPS! Our 3 kindergarten classes have settled in well to their new school. We have already started our reading groups and we love our new literacy program called ‘The Daily 5’. We have also started maths groups. All 3 classes have been to the science room for their first science lesson. We are very busy! On top of all these things we are even doing homework and home reading. Have a look at some of the exciting activities we are doing in Kindergarten…

Staff are presently updating the webpage to reflect 2015 classes. During the year you will find school notes, a calendar of events, information and photographs of the children participating in school programs.

Media Publications

Throughout the year, the school will be publishing examples of student work as well as names and photographs of students involved in learning tasks at OGPS. The children are very proud of their efforts and achievements. They become quite excited when their name of photograph is printed in our newsletter, school noticeboard, webpage or local newspaper. It would be appreciated if

‘Kids at Keyboards’ The students involved in the ‘Kids at Keyboards’ program have been busy at work learning the skills needed to play the piano. So far, students have learned to play scales and identify notes

on the keys, rhythm, beat and now basic songs. Learning to play music is a skill that you can carry for life. You may never play

piano professionally but it is a skill that you will be able to build upon in your older years and I’m privileged to be able to teach

these students these skills.

Birthday Cakes

We understand that birthday celebrations are a very special family time. However, teachers cannot interrupt teaching and learning time to organise and distribute birthday cakes to students. As you can imagine this is very time consuming and quite disruptive within a class. If a child would like to share cake with their classmates please let the teacher know in advance and provide small cupcakes which can be easily handed to children. You are asked not to include lolly bags and party hats as these will not be distributed. We are very proud of our varied, innovative and successful learning program and will continue to support the academic success and wellbeing of all students.

A School App For Your Smart Phone

As a parent it can be quite difficult to keep up with everything that is happening at school. Now you can download a school app which will provide you with a calendar of school events and even send you a reminder.

BOOKS LIGHT UP THE WORLD!

The library is now open for 2015 and library lessons have commenced. Check your child’s library day below and please ensure your child brings a library bag on their library day. A library bag is required for your child to take a book home.

School library bags cost $5.00 but other cloth or plastic bags are accepted. Folders are not accepted as they are not big enough for all library books.

Thank you to parents and students who have been returning outstanding books from last year. Please search at home for missing books but if the book is lost please send money to the office to pay for a new book.

LIBRARY DAYS CLASSES

Monday: 2 Candlelight, 2 Twilight, 2 Nova, K Bonfire

Tuesday: 4 Starlight, 5/6 Brilliance, 4 Fluoro, 3 Kaleidoscope

Thursday: 5/6 Luminous, 5/6 Sunshine, K Sparkle, K Lantern, 3 Brightstar

Friday: 1 Twinkle, 1 Dazzle, 1 Rainbow

Library monitors are being chosen to help in the library and soon our Chess Club will commence. A new Scrabble Club is also planned for those students who enjoy playing with words. We look forward to lots of students borrowing books each week and visiting the library at fruit breaks to enjoy the fun of books, reading, games and puzzles.

Sending money to school

All money which comes to school must be in a sealed envelope. Envelopes are sent home and there are additional envelopes available in the office foyer. If not a school envelope money and permission note may be placed in a plain envelope, clearly labelled with your child’s name, the event and amount of money. Please ensure that it is a different envelope for each child and each event. Money will not be accepted at school unless it is in a sealed envelope. This procedure is necessary to support the correct processing of all monies.

Our thanks for your co-operation in this matter.

What’s been happening in the K-2 playground…..? A lot of exciting things have been happening in our K-2 playground during the past few months.

Early last year, the school applied for some funding so we could continue improving and developing the K-2 playground. We were successful in receiving $12,000, generously provided by Fairfield RSL. This allowed us to erect the slippery dip climbing frame & put in the boat, which combined, encourage both physical and imaginative play. Many children have been seen

fishing from the boat amid snapping, hungry sharks and clambering up the climbing frame ladder to look through the telescope then slip down the slide.

Part of this submission will also involve information sessions and workshops for parents on healthy eating and the importance of active play.

More information will be provided on these later in the year.

Our plan is to continue adding play sections onto the climbing frame as well as erecting additional equipment to encourage physical and imaginative play in a safe environment.

We have also added extra table & chair sets to the Kinder eating area with three more yet to arrive. This enjoyable eating area also had a shade sail erected over it last year so the children have a shady, pleasant spot to eat in. The calming painted blue walls will soon have some floating white clouds added to them.

A recent weekend working bee saw many of our dedicated teachers working hard at painting, fixing and adding to parts of the playground equipment to provide this safe play space.

There are many more plans to add to the playground which will help to create a fun, stimulating and varied space not only for our students but also for pre-schoolers waiting for school to finish at 3pm. Young children are welcome to use the equipment but must always be closely watched by a parent or other adult.

Home Reading Program

All children K-6 now have their Home Reading Folder and are able to exchange their book every day and take a new book home each afternoon. Regular and consistent reading practice achieves significant reading improvement. It is a school expectation that EVERY child will take home a book to read. I urge parents to provide encouragement and the structure for children to read to someone every night. This should be recorded in the folder provided, each day. The school will closely monitor this program and inform parents if children are not borrowing regularly.

Last year, we rolled out over 300 new XO laptops across the school, putting a valuable tool for learning and research in the hands of every student from Year 1 to Year 6. With a new year, the school’s XO laptops continue to support learning and engagement across the school.

This year, students are using their XO laptops in Stage 3 to research projects for Behind the News. They are then using the same device to present their work to teachers and peers.

Students in all grades are also using powerful educational apps on their XO laptops, from learning and practising new concepts in Mathletics and Reading Eggs to honing their teamwork and creativity skills in Minecraft.

This year, we are training a select team of dedicated students to be our new XO Mechanics. These students will help other students to get the most out of their XOs, and solve almost any technical issue that may arise. A select few of our XO Mechanics will also be chosen as Student Leaders who will collaborate with other schools to share our successes and learn new ways to improve how we use this innovative technology.
