Freuds Uncanny I like the idea which Freudrefers toJetschs Theory of the uncanny which is based

around how the uncanny is produced from a sense of History He must first put himself in the proper state of feeling and so put himself in the wayof experiencing a sense of the uncanny which would refer to childhood and thethings you deal with as a child carried on throughout your life to produce your ownvision of the uncanny and how it is personal to everyone. Which in often cases refersto Clowns and the Clich Horror sequences that are seen today

Also Freud explains about the different languages within the

uncanny and the different meanings to which it is portrayed such as Greek Foreign, alienArabic and Hebrew Uncanny merges with the Demonic' and the

    Gruesome.

English: Uncomfortable, uneasy. Gloomy, dismal, uncanny, ghastly.Haunted.

This is what I hope to achieve within my work with basic relevance to these theoriesdefinitions.

Visual Concept IdeaThe ideas which I have chosen to do arebased around :1. An alleyway.2. Bedroom.3. living room.4. Roadside.

I started within nightmare scenarios from personalexperience and a reoccurring Nightmare as a child withinan alleyway and working forward from it, as I didnt want tobe too surreal with my image but still capture thenightmarish identity of being in the situation I plan to mergethe ideas together in some form, I started working onthumbnails such as a painted bedroom with the painting ofa full Roadside scene, as shown in Thumbnails 23 and 34however I feel it is unclear to the audience the effect I amtrying to achieve. I have took reference from the workingsof Melanie Pullen mainly I really want to focus on the colorpalette of Brighter Sepia tones, such as theyellow orange images seen below, andstrong lighting focusing on an irrelevant partto draw the eye around the scene. I am yet towork out which objects I will create in Mayahowever, I think with more progression withinmy thumbnails i will understand this further.

    Introduction

Within this essay I will be looking into the uncanny in relation to specific games, films and images, And

will explore what makes them uncanny with reference to Sigmund Freuds, The Uncanny(SigmundFreud, 1919). Fallout 3 Game.(Bethesda, 2008) which is a post apocalyptic game based in the futurewith relevance to American culture however is very dark and but somehow realistic in a sense of anuclear explosion. In comparison will be Picnic at Hanging Rock(Peter Weir, 1975) which is a completeopposite meaning within the uncanny as a storyline of no such genre and a mind twisting imaginativetake on the film industry. Melanie Pullens high Fashion Crime Scenes(Melanie Pullen, 2005) to which Iwill be focusing on her Metro series images, and the reality yet otherworldly photographs that get theaudiences mind wondering on the possibilities. Finally the exploration into Twin Peaks episode beyondlife and death( David Lynch, 1991) which will look into a dream sequence which ventures into newworlds and ambiguous scenes which explore the unknown and create a whole new experience to theaudience.

    Review of Melanie Pullens workhttp://uponamidnightdreary.com/decorations/melanie-pullens-high-fashion-crime-scenes/9700

I hope to incorporate the review throughout the presentation and talking about the connectionbetween what makes these films/games/images uncanny and the links between the aspects of Freudstheory.

I really like the angle of the image in the top left corner. To a certain extent, it makes the viewer feel li ke the victim, rather than onlooking from afar07 December 2011 05:25

nice set of thumbnails :) there's something about 11 and 17 that caught my eye. is there any here that you think you are going to develop?11 December 2011 16:49

17, 23 and 30 are my favorites atm ive tryed playing about with 30 a bit more as you imght be able to tell in the later series but i plan on working alotmore with them and making the atmosphere different within them, focusing more on the eary-nature of the scene rather than the emptiness9 December 2011 13:17

hey Anita :D I do like the top two images in influence map 1 as you said the stories can be interpreted however you please, also the lighting in influence2's bottom two images has a real effect of the uncanny although bottom left i s black and white i feel with added colour the suspense and drama behindthe scene would be increased. look forward to see what you produce :D

Ohhhh i see you got this one in the bag! only difference i can see in the brick is the blue smudge other than that.. Bang on! and tiles just a darkerpatched line but nothing else.. jealous! well done :D8 December 2011 13:19
