Audi and Mercedes won the prize for their autonomous car stories this year in CES- 2015 , But they’re just the stories about concept cars.

The show floor in the 2015 International CES was started with news about Mercedes-Benz’s ambitious prototype of a self-driving car. Mercedes took the car for a trail ride on the Vegas Strip and it performed beautifully without any driver.

The car called the Mercedes-Benz F015 Luxury in Motion – uses a series of sensors, cameras, and radar systems to detect where it’s going, and what to watch out for. The inside of the car is a spacious capsule with rounded seats that face each other. In case someone does want to take (human) control of the car, a steering wheel is also available.

Audi hauled a few journalists from Palo Alto, Calif., to Las Vegas in an A7 where no steering wheel was touched. No deaths were reported. Audi says it hopes to run deep learning routines on the data collected by the sensors and cameras in the car, making the system grow smarter over time.

Nissan and NASA Partner to Jointly Develop and Deploy Autonomous Drive Vehicles by End of Year

Scientists with the Nissan Research Center in Silicon Valley and NASA’s Ames Research Center in Moffett Field, California will design a zero-emission, autonomous vehicle, with plans to test drive the first one at Ames in 2015. They will focus on autonomous drive systems, human-machine interface solutions, network-enabled applications, and software analysis and verification, all involving sophisticated hardware and software used in road and space applications.
