RULE 8

The Start of Play

The Start of Play

– Each team in own half of field– Defenders at least 10 yards from ball– Ball stationary on center spot– Referee signals with whistle to kick-off – Ball is in play when it is kicked and moves

forward

When:

• Start of game

• After each goal– By team scored upon

• Start of second half– By team that did not kick-off in first half– Teams switch ends

Ball In and Out

Ball In and Out of Play

Ball is out of play when:

– It has wholly crossed the goal line or touch line …. On the ground or in the air

–Play has been stopped by the referee

• Ball is in play at all other times including:

–Rebound from goalpost, crossbar or corner flag post

–Rebound off an official as long as the ball remains on the field of play

Temporary Suspension of Play Due to:– Injury– Inadvertent Whistle – Ball becomes deflated – Interference by an outside agent

Only when one team has “clear” possession of the ball.

“Clear” Possession = No opponent is within playing distance of the ball

Infraction By Opponent

If an opponent unfairly distracts or moves to impede the thrower…

Player is Cautioned for “unsporting behavior” and shown the yellow card.

It is an infraction for a defender to stand closer than 2 yds. from point where throw-in is taken.
