Editor’s Letter

by Tracy Bidwell

I can hardly believe it’s May already! Although I’m sure much of that sentiment has to do with the gray skies and pouring rain, spring is still my

favorite time of the year. With foals and breeding season surrounding us, it’s an exciting time to see all the new foals running and playing (when the weather cooperates, of course). But my favorite thing about May is that show season is well underway! Ohio’s AQHYA World Championship Show team points are being tabulated and soon we will know who will represent Ohio in Oklahoma in July. Competition for Congress NYATT teams are also underway throughout Ohio. Good luck to all the youth who have worked so hard this year to accomplish their goals! May kicks off a string of shows for Eastern Ohio and Northern Ohio, held across the state in Columbus, Lancaster and Findlay. NOQHA continues to host shows throughout June in Canfi eld and OMIQHA is set to host their show June 25th-26th at the University of Findlay Western Farm. Rolling Acres and BWHA each have two show dates in July and don’t forget about the Region 4 Regional Championship, held July 15th-17th! I hope to see everyone at the Ohio Expo Center for a wonderful show. I’m also looking forward to my fi rst OQHA Annual Picnic! Held Monday, June 13th at the Ohio Expo Center’s Natural Resource Shelter Area. I can’t wait to try some of the fried perch and have a good time with the membership! Everyone’s invited, so bring a friend and a dish to share and enjoy the company.

Dear OQHA Members,

Thank you for renewing your adoption of Rocky, one of our therapeutic riding horses. Your

donation for our Adopt A Horse program will cover horse care costs and free up more money for scholarships for our riders. Rocky started with Discovery Riders in March 2008. He came from Cincinnati, where he lived following his movie debut in “Th e Mighty” in 1999. He is 25 years old now, and is a cross between a Belgian Draft horse and a Standardbred. Rocky is one of the favorite horses to ride at Discovery Riders. Standing 16.2 hands high, riders of all ages enjoy riding Rocky, including our fi ve year olds! Rocky is our ‘gentle giant’. He was named the “Volunteer of the Year” for Logan County in 2010.

Mark Your Calendar for the OQHA Picnic!

The Ohio Quarter Horse Association will host its annual picnic and board meeting one week earlier

than usual to avoid conflicts with horse shows. Set for Monday, June 13th, all members, family and friends are invited to join the OQHA Board of Directors for dinner, followed by board meetings for OQHA, OAQHA and OQHYA.

Dinner will begin at 6 p.m., and guests are encouraged to bring a dish to share. OQHA will provide beverages, bratwursts and fried perch. Don’t forget, youth members that have qualified for the AQHA Youth World Show Team will be completing their entries at the meeting!

Upcoming Meetings

The next OQHA board meeting will be Monday, May 16th at 7 p.m. at the Ramada Plaza Hotel on

Sinclair Road in Columbus. OQHA will host the Annual Picnic on Monday, June 13th, in conjunction with the June board of directors meeting. Held at the Ohio Expo Center’s Natural

Resources area shelter house in Columbus, OQHA members and guests are invited to attend. Dinner will begin at 6 p.m., with the directors meeting to follow. In July, the board will meet Monday, July 18th at 7 p.m. at the Ramada Plaza Hotel on Sinclair Road in Columbus.

The American Quarter Horse

Association’s Region 4 Regional Championship Show will be held July 15-17 at the Ohio Expo Center in Columbus, Ohio. Hosted by the Ohio Quarter Horse Association, the Region 4 Championship is now in its seventh year, and is the largest regional championship with nearly 1,500 entries last year. This year, the event

has been shortened to three days (from four days) so that exhibitors have to take less time off from work and school. Despite the abbreviated time table, no classes were removed. In fact, several classes were added, including Progressive Working Hunter, Junior Pleasure

Driving and Senior Pleasure Driving. Competitors from Ohio, Michigan, Kentucky, Indiana, West Virginia and Ontario, Canada are invited to attend the Region 4 Championships. Nearly $55,000 in cash and prizes, including seven trophy saddles, will be up for grabs, as well as wonderful prizes for top finishers in each class. The Regional Championship shows are held throughout 10 regions of North America through a program established by the American Quarter Horse Association with support from state affiliates, like the Ohio Quarter Horse Association. These experiences were developed to provide an opportunity for people to experience the competition, education and excitement found at American Quarter Horse Championship shows. Aside from the show ring, exhibitors and spectators can enjoy trade exhibitions, food and shopping, clinics by professional horsemen and educational seminars. For more information about the Region 4 Championships, including a full show schedule and entry information, visit www.oqha.com.

2011 Ohio Trail Ride Cancelled

Due to a late start in 2011, the Ohio Quarter Horse Association Board of Directors voted at their April

meeting to cancel the trail ride for this year. However, for those still interested in participating in an AQHA approved trail ride, the Tri-County Trail Association will host a ride June 10-12, 2011 in East

Sparta, Ohio. For more information, please contact Cynthia Bauman at (330) 323-3559 or [email protected]. You can also visit the Tri-County Trail Association website at www.tri-cotrails.org.

Ohio Crowns a New Queen for 2011

In March, the Ohio Quarter Horse

Association crowned its 2011 Queen. Megan Masterson, of Somerset, Ohio, won the honor of representing Ohio during 2011.

Masterson has 15 years of experience in the equine industry through competition in 4-H, IHSA and AQHA. She competed on the Ohio University Western Equestrian Team from 2006-2009, which included a term as their president, as well as placing 5th in Western Horsemanship at the 2008 IHSA National Championships. Masterson graduated from OU in June 2009 with a bachelor’s degree in hearing, speech and language sciences and is currently pursuing her Masters in Language Pathology, also at OU. “As OQHA’s Queen, I will use my eff ective communication skills to advocate for OQHA

throughout the Quarter Horse community and the general public,” Masterson said. “I have worked with a variety of people and have developed strong communication and interpersonal skills. Th ese skills, in addition to my experience with and passion for the Quarter Horse will allow me to eff ectively represent OQHA and the Quarter Horse community.” Aside from her experience with horses, Masterson has been involved in several organizations through Ohio University. Masterson currently works for Ohio University Th erapy Associates as a graduate clinician, where she provides speech-language therapy to adults and children in Southeastern Ohio. She was also a member Undergraduate Research Club and Omicron Delta Kappa, a national leadership and honors fraternity.

The 45th Annual All American Quarter Horse Congress is slated to take place October 7-30, 2011

at the Ohio Expo Center in Columbus, Ohio. Every year, the Ohio Quarter Horse Association takes steps to ensure that the largest single-breed horse show in the world is constantly evolving and changing to exceed the expectations of competitors and visitors alike.

This year, the event’s organizers made the difficult decision to close Million Dollar Stallion Avenue, which has been part of the Congress since its inception in 1967. “It was a very tough decision,” said OQHA Executive Vice President Cam Foreman. “But times have changed, and new technology dominates how we market and promote stallions today.” When the Congress began more than 40 years ago, there was no YouTube or Facebook, tools that stallion owners now rely on to promote their studs. These new technologies have changed the dynamics of the breeding industry. However, closing Stallion Avenue has opened up many opportunities. “Congress Hall has had the same layout for more

than 20 years,” Foreman said. “It’s very exciting to be able to make some much needed changes.” The increase in space has allowed many current commercial vendors to not only expand their booth space, but to move to a better location. And, of course, there will also be several new vendors, including farm and breeder promotional booths, allowing visitors to speak with stallion owners face to face.

End of a Tradition: Stallion Avenue Closes

Congress Requires Equine Piroplasmosis Test

Beginning in 2011, the Ohio Quarter Horse Association will require certification of a negative

blood test for equine piroplasmosis for all horses entering the Ohio Expo Center for the All American Quarter Horse Congress. The test must have been completed within one year prior to entry onto the show grounds. Equine piroplasmosis is a tick-borne disease caused by the parasites Babesia caballi and Theilertia equi that affects horses, donkeys, mules, and zebras. The disease is transmitted via tick bites or through mechanical transmission by improperly disinfected needles or surgical instruments. “Unfortunately, this disease is becoming more and more prevalent throughout the U.S.,” said OQHA

Executive Vice President Cam Foreman. “With the volume of horses that attend the Congress, we felt that we needed to protect both the exhibitors and their horses to the best of our ability.” By allowing a negative test to be completed within one year, exhibitors can have one test done for both the AQHA World Shows and the All American Quarter Horse Congress. Please note that horses without a certificate of a negative blood test for equine piroplasmosis will not be permitted onto the show grounds. Additionally, all trailers entering the show grounds will be required to stop at a secondary checkpoint, located before the Stall Office, to verify negative Coggins and negative equine piroplasmosis tests.

The schedule for the 45th annual All American

Quarter Horse Congress, held October 7-30, 2011, has been set by the Ohio Quarter Horse Association. Visit www.oqha.com to view the schedule by day and download a complete schedule.

2011 Theme Each year, the Congress Tri-Chairmen and the OQHA Board of Directors approve a theme for the All American Quarter Horse Congress. This year’s theme is “Where Legends Are Made.” As the world’s largest single breed horse show, the Congress is known throughout the equine industry as one of its premier events. The best Quarter Horses in the world converge each year in Columbus, Ohio for the chance to be crowned a Congress Champion. The careers and legacies of horses, owners, trainers and exhibitors alike are made and broken at this show. Knowing this, the Congress Tri-Chairmen thought it only appropriate for this year’s theme to be “Where Legends Are Made.” New Classes There are several new classes that have been added to Congress in 2011: First up will be the brand new Cinch Bridleless Cutting class, to be held Friday, October 14th, immediately following the Congress Cutting Shoot-Out, which will begin at 5 p.m. Additionally, Southern Belle Breeders are sponsoring a new Western Pleasure Maturity class for horses that have earned less than $10,000. The class will have one go and a finals, and will include open, limited and Southern Belle Breeders divisions. October 18th at 8:00 a.m. in the Coliseum, with the Limited finals held later that day. The finals for the open and Southern Belle Breeders divisions will be held Friday, October 21st. With one go and a finals, held Monday, October 24th and Thursday, October 27th respectively, the class will pay-out $7,500 in added money. In The Industry: AQHA Rule Changes

In many cases, AQHA rule changes are the result of recommendations from AQHA members or the

various AQHA standing committees. Once approved at convention by the respective AQHA standing committees, the rule changes are then reviewed by the AQHA Executive Committee and approved by the AQHA Board of Directors. The Executive Committee has the final word on all rule changes except changes to the Association’s bylaws and any rules and regulations pertaining to the registration of horses. This year’s rule changes include: • Lip chains can be used in youth and amateur halter classes, with the exception of performance halter, versatility ranch horse conformation and weanling classes. • Weighted tails are now allowed in show classes in an effort to curtail the illegal deadening of tails; a group has been assigned the task of determining the maximum weight allowed.

• A change to Rule 405(m), which alters the number of horses that can be shown by an individual exhibitor in a class at only the 2011 AQHA World Championship Show. • In order to be eligible to show in its respective World Show in Performance Halter - or to earn a year-end high-point award in Performance Halter – a horse must have earned 10 performance points during the respective World Show qualifying time period or during the calendar year for high-point, other than showmanship at halter. (Beginning in 2012) • Allow novice amateur and novice youth to show two handed with a snaffle bit in any class. To see all of the rule changes approved at the AQHA Executive Committee April meeting, visit www.aqha.com. All AQHA standing committee reports are available online as well.

AQHA Offers Pilot Rookie Classes Submitted by: AQHA Journal

This year, the American Quarter Horse Association is introducing a trial run of rookie classes

created by the AQHA Blue-Ribbon Task Force to make the transition from 4-H to open showing or no show experience at all less intimidating and more comfortable for exhibitors. The goal of theses classes is to reach AQHA members of all ages and riding levels. By developing true entry-level classes, AQHA plans to introduce new AQHA members, as well as members who have never shown, to the AQHA show scene. To compete in these classes, you must be an AQHA member. However, AQHA is offering a free 90-day trial membership to all rookie competitors provided they have not been an AQHA member in the last three years. If you are planning to show, please fill out the novice application and bring it to your show. The rookie classes will be offered for youth-, amateur- and open-division classes. Horse and rider combinations that have earned less than 10 AQHA points in that particular class can compete in that

rookie class, as well as the corresponding novice class. Horse and rider combinations that have earned more than 10 AQHA points in a class will no longer be able to enter that rookie class but can continue to compete in the corresponding novice class until they reach a total of 25 AQHA novice points. The AQHA rookie classes will tentatively be available at nine AQHA shows for the 2011 show season: May 21st in Caseyville, Illinois, June 17th in Columbus, Montana, July 16th in Colfax, North Carolina, July 27th in Carp, Ontario, August 13th in Colfax, North Carolina, August 27th in Augusta, New Jersey, November 5th in Williamston, North Carolina and November 25th in Perry, Georgia. The first show to test-pilot rookie classes was April 2 in Colfax, North Carolina, at the “No Bling” Novice/Rookie Show and Instructional Clinic. The show, which went very well, offered rookie classes in both youth and amateur showmanship, hunter under saddle, hunt seat equitation, western pleasure and horsemanship.

Hilltop Equestrian Receives First Quarter Horse

Skip Salome, OQHA First Vice President, donated Major League Detail, a six year old Quarter Horse

Gelding, to Hilltop Equestrian Center in March. Affectionately called “Lex” in the barn, this Quarter Horse is showcasing one of the breed’s greatest qualities to all who meet him and is the first Quarter Horse donated to Hilltop Equestrian Center. “He’s such a great minded horse,” said Salome. “I knew he would fit right in at Hilltop and get along with the kids.” Salome’s granddaughter, Lauren Diaz, did most of the training and showed him successfully at the open level in English classes. Unfortunately, she didn’t have time to continue to show Lex, so together Diaz and Salome decided to donate him.

Hilltop Equestrian Center founders Jim and Lisa Hazelwood began work on the facility in 2007, with the vision that a horse camp could encourage despondent youth to grow into more confident and capable young adults. Hilltop offers several programs, including “Adopt-A-Horse”, which is a twelve lesson overview on horse management and prepares the student to accept the responsibility and dedication the rider needs if he or she is to properly bond with their horse. Hilltop also offers “EquiTherapy”, which provides physical therapy to children ages 18 months to 12 years. Equine-assisted physical therapy is utilized as a treatment tool to reach short and long-term goals established by the therapist, patient, and family/caregivers. Flarida Slides to the Top of Ariat Kentucky Reining Cup

Shawn Flarida, Craig Schmersal and Tom McCutcheon—all members of the U.S. gold-

medal team at the 2010 Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games—grabbed the top four places tonight in the HorsePower Inc. CRI5* at the Ariat Kentucky Reining Cup. This was the debut of the Ariat Kentucky Reining Cup alongside the Rolex Kentucky Three-Day Event, presented by Bridgestone. This competition was made possible by the popularity of the Reining World Championships at the World Equestrian Games last September here at the Kentucky Horse Park. Flarida rode KR Lil Commander to the top score of 226.5. Schmersal claimed second on Miss Lil Addy Tude (225.0) and third on Mister Montana Nic (224.5). McCutcheon earned the fourth-placed ribbon on Chic Olena Starbuck (222.5). “There were a couple of places that could have been better, but this horse has been great for me his whole

career,” said Flarida. “I sometimes can get in his way, but he knows his job.” Schmersal grabbed the runner-up position on Miss Lil Addy Tude even though “this was probably only the fifth time I’ve ever ridden her. But she’s like a little motor-scooter out there.” Mister Montana Nick, a 13-year-old stallion, is the horse Schmersal rode on the WEG team. “He never lets me down. He just keeps on knocking out all those 6-year-olds,” said Schmersal. The Horsepower Inc. CRI5* also offered a team competition, with five teams sponsored by five companies: Clark Oil, ProEquine Equipment, Ariat, Purina and Smartpak. The Clark Oil team of Tim McQuay, Mandy McQuay and Sam Smith took the prizes for first place, with a score of 662.0. Mandy McQuay and Smith each rode horses they’d never shown before. “I just kind of tried to get to know him, because he’s a real experienced horse,” said Mandy of her strategy. She first sat on Don Julio Whiz on Wednesday, but she finished in fifth place individually (222.0). Smith has trained Paid By Corona for “about a year” for owner Timmothy Roper. Tim, her father, was the team’s second-leading scorer on Rudy Dun It (221.0). “It was a lot of fun. I hope they ask us back next year,” he said of the Ariat Kentucky Reining Cup. A highlight of the evening was watching singer Lyle Lovett perform his pattern on his horse Smart And Shiney. Said Lovett after finishing 20th (207.5), “I think I need a bigger handicap.” When asked if he thought he might be considered a candidate for the 2014 World Championship team, Lovett quipped, “After the way I rode tonight, I’m the only one who’s considering me.” Further information on the 2011 Rolex Kentucky Three-Day Event, presented by Bridgestone, is available at the Rolex Kentucky website (www.rk3de.org). OMI Quarter Horse AssociationSubmitted by: Olga Kipp, OMIQHA Secretary

At our April meeting the horse show was discussed and all

seems to be covered, except for the shavings. We are currently checking with the shavings

supplier we had last year. Letters were mailed out to all of the Ohio trainers with show bills in them by Kelly Gibson. Letters were also sent out to all of last year’s sponsors. Kelly will send a mass e-mail to all members to see if they will bring monetary donations or sponsorships. We discussed having our banquet at the same place as last year, The Lighthouse in Findlay, for the same weekend next year, but Saturday. It was mentioned to have it start at 5 p.m., with dinner at 6 p.m. and have a DJ afterwards. We will discuss more at later meetings. The queen gave her report. She has raffle tickets to sell a set of basic chaps that were donated for $1.00 each. The drawing will be held at our show on June 26th. The winner will have the option to personalize them for an added price. Dawn Arn is going to get with all of the kids to have them each take a few to sell. Lisa Maag, queen advisor, has suggested to Abbey that she take the youth kids to the Toledo Zoo for a day to hang out, have fun and get to know each other better. The

date is to be determined. The NYATT team barrel qualification shows were discussed. We have three, so there are enough for the kids to get qualified. They are the East Lansing show on May 13-15, NOQHA show in Findlay on May 28th and 29th and the IQHA show in Fort Wayne on July 8-10. We also found out that Warren and Silver Star will be at our show again. It was discussed to come up with some ideas to try to get more of the members involved. It was mentioned that the kids want to do something together, for fun, at the show. It was mentioned to have a Dietz’s ice cream social. It was also mentioned to have a banner made with our logo. Valerie Heydinger volunteered to make it. It will be made so it can either hang from a table or on a wall, like a stall curtain. We also need to get a list of all of the parents who said they would help when needed. Dawn Arn said the kids also want to have a pool party at her house at some point. YOUTH REPORT: Kelsey Grose gave the youth report. They had a horsemanship clinic with Art O’Brien that was well attended, with refreshments served afterwards. Kelly asked if they had any sponsorship money or silent auction items yet and they did not.

Spring is already on its way out, which means that show

season will soon be in full force. 2011 marks the beginning of

a partnership between the Ohio State Buckskin Association and the Miami Valley Horse Show Association. The Red, White and Buckskin Circuit (July 1-4) is the inaugural show that will display the joint efforts to produce a quality, fun, competitive show for not only IBHA-registered horses, but horses of any color or breed. And don’t forget paybacks and added $$$$! This is a show that you will not want to miss – from the Saturday night hog roast and potluck with food as far as you can see, to the dog races and even Redneck Showmanship – the Red, White and Buckskin Circuit always proves to be a great time. This year we are breaking in a brand new venue, the Schmidthorst Pavilion at the Allen County Fairgrounds, which is conveniently located near I-75 in Lima, Ohio. The Holiday Inn is OSBA’s host hotel. If you’re planning

on staying there, be sure to make your reservations by June 16th to receive OSBA’s special show rate. Even if you aren’t bringing a horse and are in the area, please stop out. You are sure to meet some great people and see some nice horses and you may even find yourself wanting a bucky! The OSBA Fall Futurity will be on September 10-11 at Circle G Arena in Brookville, Ohio. The Miami Valley Horse Show Association will again be collaborating with OSBA to offer opportunities for ALL colors and breeds – as well as paybacks! If you have an IBHA horse age five or younger or a weanling (of any color) with an IBHA-registered parent, consider entering your horse the futurity. The deadline for the first payment is July 31st. You can find the futurity forms and a showbill online. As always, check www.ohiobuckskins.org for the latest and greatest news for Ohio buckskins. Good luck and see you in the arena!

1If you haven’t already, attend a show and watch the classes you plan on entering so that you know

exactly what to expect.

2 If your horse is green, take him to a show and don’t enter any classes; just evaluate how he handles the

new surroundings.

3Make a list of everything you need to take to the show; then pack the day beforehand, checking each

item off your list.

4 Have a friend or family member on hand at the show to help with last minute grooming, giving

your boots a wipe before you enter the ring or just providing moral support.

5 Before each class, visualize how you want your ride to be—professionals fi nd this technique helpful.

6 If you don’t have a lot of money to spend on show clothes, stick to classic colors and avoid fl amboyant

trends.

7 Dress up your everyday tack by using a special pad or blanket reserved only for show.

8 If your discipline calls for show-day braiding or banding, start practicing well ahead of time, or hire

an expert to do the job for you.

9School one level higher than you show. Th at way you can compete with confi dence, even when

nerves and distractions might get in the way.

10 Know how your horse behaves in the company of others. If he is unruly, it’s probably not time to

show yet.

11Warm your horse up, but don’t burn him out. Save his best energy for the actual class.

12Clean your tack the day before the show: Make sure it’s in tip-top shape, and polish any silver.

13 If your horse is having a meltdown in a rail class, head to the center of the ring and just stand

quietly. Better to chalk it up to experience than create a dangerous situation.

14 Some disciplines have strict rules and regulations about equipment. Study your rulebook closely to

be sure that your tack is “legal.”

15 Hunters and jumpers: In the warm-up ring, call “heads up” on the fence you’re jumping.

16At home, practice any special tests that you think might be added to your classes, such as riding

without stirrups, sitting the extended trot or executing a fi gure-eight.

17Never hold a class up; you could be disqualifi ed. If you are making a quick tack change, or have

classes running simultaneously, have someone inform the show steward immediately.

18Ask a show steward if you can see the judge’s scorecard or sheet to gain a greater

understanding on how he or she pins a class.

19Don’t forget to close out your check before leaving the showgrounds!

20Stay calm! If you’re nervous, your horse will know, so remember to take deep, even breaths

before you enter the ring or start your pattern.

22Once you are in the ring, remember to take your time. You don’t need to be the fi rst person to

respond to a change of gait.

23Take some extra time to memorize your patterns! Draw them, say them out loud and

practice the maneuvers in your warm-up.

24Finally, and most importantly, enjoy yourself and have fun!
